Malfoy Manor, Wiltshire
Draco sat behind the armchair in the library. He had been brave all day and he watched his parents' fight from the doorway. No matter how much his mother told him that it wasn't his fault, he knew.
He knew.
Everyone was happier before he was born. It was because he hadn't shown sympathy to his father's magic. He wasn't his magical heir and it was his fault. Mother protected him from father, but she was reaching her end and all the blows were wilting her from the inside. Mother was dying and it was his fault.
A tear fell. And more fell freely from his eyes. Anybody who tried to love him would die because of him. Weepy died when she tried to protect him from Lucius' magic and so will his mum. They made the will after Mum had sacrificed the clauses from the betrothal contract to get the Unbreakable Vow from father. He would never kill him, but that came at the cost of the safety clauses and Mum was now vulnerable. He could kill her anytime and he had started to slowly drain her magic to add to his own dark magic.
A witch without magic wouldn't live very long and he knew it. He cried some more but if he was missing any longer one of Father's elves would notice. He got up and quietly made his way to the washroom.
His grey eyes were red, and his face was flushed. He washed it and put on his mask. He swore to himself.
He would never break the promise he made to his mother.
2 Days later
Black Manor
"Amy" Sirius said. "Put on your formal robes, we need to leave for the funeral and Andy will come after us."
She nodded. She knew that as heir Black, she would have to be present for Narcissa's funeral. It had been a week since she had seen them at Diagon Alley. No matter how much she tried she couldn't help but feel bad for Draco Malfoy. Even Dark children loved their family and she couldn't imagine life without hers.
She put on the formal black robes and made her way to the Apparition point and tightly clasped Sirius' hand. It took her a few moments to get a hold herself. She added change Wizarding transportation to her to-do list and brushed the wrinkles off of her robes.
Malfoy Manor was beautiful. It had black walls much like her Manor and it was a little smaller, but there was an elegance in the carefully planned out structure. When she walked past the gate, she felt the tingle of wards on her skin.
A feral looking elf greeted them at the gate and took their cloaks.
"Would you like anything else, Lord and heir Black?" the elf asked. They both shook their heads negative and the elf popped away.
A man wearing black robes with a black serpent cane swept into the room gracefully. Behind him was a small boy with the same eyes and same hair wearing black robes. He walked with the proper poise of a pureblood too but his eyes.
His grey eyes were painful. His face was flushed as if he was crying and Amy felt a pang of sadness for him. Mr. Malfoy on the other hand didn't look sad at all, or maybe he was really good at hiding his emotions.
"Lord Black," Lucius said with a little bow. "And the young lady is?"
"Amethyst Potter-Black, heir of the House of Black and daughter of the House of Potter. I offer my condolences on this sorrowful occasion. May Magic free the spirit of Narcissa Black- Malfoy." She may be a half-blood, but she was properly trained in all pureblood courtesies.
Lord Malfoy gave an approving nod. "Draco, if you would take young Miss Potter upstairs, Lord Black and I need to complete a few rituals."
"Yes, father."
He lead Amy up the stairs to a room that had a complete Slytherin aesthetic with green walls and black furniture. It was fairly large, about as large as her room in Black Manor. Her mind was racing at unhealthy speeds. It was a debate.
Should she ask him about what happened at Artie's or not? How was she supposed to ask that? If she did, would she have to admit to eavesdropping? She sighed.
"Would you like to play chess or exploding snap? Draco asked silently.
Amy blinked. "We can play chess if you would like."
He nodded and turned around to find the game, but Amy caught his wrist. He turned around and flinched. Amy let go fast not wanting to cross her limits.
"I am sorry," she said, her cheeks heating up. She tucked an invisible piece of hair behind her ear and continued quietly. "I saw you and your Mother at Artie's office and I felt your Mum's aura. It was unnatural. It felt like, um it was infected and weak. I don't know why but I thought that you ought to know that."
Draco winced. How did she know that? Did she have to remind him that it was his fault? But he couldn't even be angry he sensed that she was being honest. He didn't know what to say, if he said the truth vow or not Father would find a way to punish him without killing him.
Finally, he said what his Mum had prepared him to say, "It was a curse. I don't want to talk about it please. I saw what it did and… please."
Amy felt another pang of sadness hit her. He was also eight years old like her and he had to see his Mum die. "I am sorry, I just thought that you might not know so."
She wanted to offer friendship, but the offer died at her throat. Now was not the time for this. Amy saw into his eyes and he flinched again. She resolved to silence and it seemed he appreciated it too.
With a pop, an elf with large green eyes came. "Master has called you to the East Grounds for the funeral. Lord Black and Lady Tonks are already there."
Draco lead Amy down the stairs. He was taller than her and walked really fast and Amy was jogging to keep up. They came down and Amy found her cloak and put it on. It was very much cold outside. They found themselves at a beautiful grave.
It was black marble with intricate flowers carved on it.
Narcissa Black Malfoy
1955-1988
"Freedom and free will until the end, twinkle and flare until the sunsets"
Sirius was holding onto Andromeda and she cried. They hadn't reconciled, and her younger sister died without knowing how much she loved her.
Sirius shed one tear. Narcissa was a lot like Regulus. Bella was always vile with a cruel streak but Andy protected Narcissa for a long time like Sirius protected Regulus but after Andy ran away. Aunt Druella and Uncle Cygnus got their hands on her too. She was married as soon as possible to make sure that she didn't run away like Andy. They never contacted each other and Sirius forgot her.
Amy cried too. She hadn't known Narcissa but she couldn't see others crying and Andy looked broken. Sirius supported Andy and they floo'ed back to the Manor where Andy fell asleep on the chaise.
Sirius didn't want to talk, so Amy went to her room. Amy knew when she could and could not comfort Sirius. It was these times that Sirius needed Remus the most. He and Sirius were partners and she knew they shared a deeper bond than her. Remus was mature and understood the situation before Sirius even told him.
She put a pinch of floo powder and floo called him, he would be at the office. "Moony's Bureau!" Remus' head popped out.
"Amy what happened?"
"Sirius…" She didn't need to say anything more. She moved aside and Remus swiftly came out. He ran into Sirius' room and Amy didn't move. She decided to floo to Hogwarts as the children were back.
Not many people knew that Hogwarts was open to all magical children and with an appointment with the Headmaster's floo you could come to Hogwarts. It was a policy that the Founders had told her about. In the past, orphan muggle-born students would stay at Hogwarts with their siblings if they were the First War Hogwarts sheltered many families including Muggle-Born families.
She didn't need to get an appointment from the headmaster as Sevvie's floo was always open to Black Manor where she spent most of her time. She was keen to avoid the founders right now because she made Helga upset when she told her about the eavesdropping and Salazar was upset about Kuro.
So she floo'ed to Sevvie's quarters and made her way to Professor McGonagall's room where she knew the Deputy Headmistress would be. She had memorized all the schedules from all four houses. Montague and Brooks were both in Slytherin, Dora, Addison and Ruth were in Hufflepuff, Nora was in Ravenclaw and of course, Bill, Charlie and Iris were in Gryffindor so she had taken it upon herself to memorize all schedules.
Minerva was sitting in her office drinking her Earl Grey while marking fifth year essays when she heard a knock.
"Enter," she said, wondering who would come to bother her at her free period. Amy stepped in and Minerva smiled.
Amy had made friends with all the teachers and they all loved her too. She was knowledgable in all of their subjects and spoke with such intellect they sometimes forgot they were talking to an eight-year-old. Harry made the headlines by simply going to Diagon Alley, and Amy was rarely mentioned. Minerva thought that it was unfair that Amy wasn't getting any attention but, she knew that Amy didn't want any.
"Minnie," Amy said with a hug. While others only saw her stern side, she saw her soft side too. Minnie was really sweet and somebody you can count on.
"What brings you here today, Amy? Are you here to see Severus?"
"No, I just came here for fun and to see Charlie and Hagrid about something but, I thought I would meet you too."
Oh, how Minerva wished that Amy would be in her house. That would be a slap on Severus' face. She would bring house points, she would be the perfect head girl and she would be Minerva's key to winning the Quidditch Cup. Filius, Pomona and Severus were also competing for her.
Just three more years and they would find out. They chatted about the Marauders for a while and Amy left for Hagrid's hut, leaving a hopeful head of Gryffindor behind.
