"Inedible," Bella declares, groaning. She pushes her bowl away from her, and that's when we know the food must be really bad.
Alice looks down at her bowl anxiously. We're all sitting upstairs again, trying to include Edward, but even he looks like he rather wished we hadn't.
It was Alice's turn to cook tonight, and though Emmett was helping, they attempted chili, from dried beans. None of us have had to cook with dried beans before, and apparently, the attempt was unsuccessful.
Bella—our least picky eater in the house—won't touch her bowl, and immediately, Rose puts hers down, shaking her head.
Alice looks around at me desperately. I love her, so I'll do this for her.
Taking a spoonful of chili, I look at her and offer up a weak smile before shoveling a bite into my mouth. All eyes are on me, and as soon as the chili touches my tongue, I know Bella is right.
The beans are crunchy, and despite the excess liquid in the chili, they are somehow powdery. I try chewing, but it's disgusting.
Then the heat kicks in.
I'm from Texas, and I can handle some serious fire in my food, but it's like Alice poured lava in this. My whole mouth is burning, and each breath in spreads the fire until I'm choking.
"Fuck!" Alice says, jumping up when she sees I'm near death. Everyone is laughing as I scramble to my feet and race to the bathroom, spitting the bite in the toilet. I shove my whole head under the faucet, drinking water like a damn animal. Alice is fluttering around nearby, and everyone in the hall is doubled over laughing.
"Fuck, fuck, fuck, Jas! I'm so sorry!"
When I feel some of the fire finally letting up, I turn the water off, wiping my face. I turn to Ali, who was watching me with wide eyes. "Darlin', I love you. But promise me you'll never make chili again."
lol, I can't imagine how many mishaps in the kitchen there were for people suddenly needing to cook at the beginning of the pandemic!
