A/N: The amount of you who commented on the last chapter was overwhelming and really warmed my heart and made my day, thank you so so much. I've tried reaching out to each of you, so if I couldn't because you commented as a guest or if I somehow missed you, please know that I super appreciate you and am incredibly grateful for you supporting me. I hope you all like this one :)
Hailey breathed in slowly then sat on the mattress in her room. It was practically empty sans a handful of boxes and the bed that needed to be moved out as soon as Adam, Kevin, Kim, and Vanessa showed up.
She tried to stay calm, but it was really starting to hit her that they were moving. Her gut told her this was the right decision and that this next home was the perfect choice for them…it just still hurt to think about everything they were leaving behind.
She'd spent so much time in the last week telling Drew that their memories would stay with them that she had forgotten to give herself the same reminder.
She could still see herself wearing lingerie and trying to distract Jay from the fact that she'd set his pajamas on fire…the countless mornings where they had just stayed in bed and cuddled while watching TV since they didn't need to go to work…Jay spinning her around in their bathroom because she was pregnant…all the times the pregnancy tests had read negative…Drew sleeping in their bed for the first time…skin-to-skin with Blake while feeding him a bottle…
Hailey wiped her eyes against the steady stream of tears falling down her face. It was a room with four walls, but those four walls had watched their family grow into what it was now.
She breathed shakily and rubbed circles on her stomach as she tried to stop crying before everyone arrived.
Jay finished packing the small cooler with the rest of the food from the fridge. He sighed and wiped the sweat from his forehead before kneeling next to it to zip it up.
"Dada," Blake said while slowly toddling over, "Dada."
"Yeah, bud?" Jay sat down to lean against the fridge.
Blake tripped over his feet and fell to the tile. He made a soft, frustrated noise then rolled onto his back to stare up at the ceiling.
Jay chuckled and was reaching out to him when he suddenly remembered when Blake was sitting in the exact same spot in the kitchen and said 'Mama' for the first time. He frowned and paused.
"Dada," Blake repeated. He pushed himself on the tile with a soft giggle then rolled back over to crawl to Jay.
Jay picked him up and just stared at him.
Blake patted his face, "Dada." He touched his own mouth and said again, "Dada."
Jay glanced over to the kitchen table where he'd helped Drew with homework and talked with Hailey about Drew even calling him his dad. He remembered having a food fight with Hailey when she tried making Irish soda bread and the few months after that when they'd decided to take a day off of work, but accidentally forgot to take the day off so everyone came and crashed their post-anniversary high.
He laughed under his breath and turned back to Blake who was still pulling at his own mouth with a quiet whine.
"Hungry, Buzz?" he asked softly.
Blake pointed to the fridge, "Dada."
Jay chuckled and opened the cooler back up, "Let's see, oh, do you want one of these?" He showed Blake one of his yogurt pouches before uncapping it and helping him happily eat it.
As Blake sucked out the yogurt, Jay leaned his head back against the fridge and continued thinking of all the things that had happened in the kitchen over the past few years.
If he teared up and almost cried, he would deny it later when Hailey asked.
Drew stood next to the window in his room and watched a couple birds fly around the tree that used to hold the birdhouse shaped like a police car and a birdfeeder. It was like they knew it should be there, but hadn't realized yet that they were packed away into a box labeled 'bird supplies' in Hailey's handwriting.
When Drew had first came in this room almost two year before, there had been a big bed in the middle of the room that he'd stayed in. He tried not to think about how he actually wet the bed that night and how scared he'd been. He knew now that Jay and Hailey would never hurt him, but it still hurt his heart to think of what had happened in his past and remember that it wouldn't happen again.
The next time he'd come in the room, it was amazing. It'd had dinosaur drawings on the wall and the closet was filled with clothes and there was a basket filled with super soft blankets. Drew looked up at the ceiling where the swing used to hang so he could sit and read or just look out the window. Hailey had promised they'd set up the swing again in his new room, but he was afraid it wouldn't be the same. The swing was one of his favorite parts of his room.
Drew turned to the rest of his room. Just like the swing, everything was gone. There weren't anymore pictures taped to the wall and he could see his bookshelf through his door out in the hallway.
Even though he had ripped up a couple books in his room and cried a lot, there were a lot more happy memories made there. They were happy memories he really didn't think he'd ever have. He was so used to people being rude or mean to him that he didn't think anyone would actually love him.
Jay and Hailey taught him differently.
A small part of him was a tiny bit scared that they'd stop loving him as much when their biological baby was born, but he kept reminding himself of everything they'd said to him in this very room about how much they loved him.
Still, it didn't stop him from crying at his empty room and all those memories that were made here. Some of the tears were sad ones because he didn't want to leave. A lot of the tears, though, were happy ones because he had found a family and a home here.
"It's the one at the end of the hall," Hailey told Kevin and Adam as they entered the new house carrying Blake's crib.
"Upstairs?" Adam groaned.
Hailey raised an eyebrow and put her hand on her hip.
"Yup, not a problem," Adam quickly said and walked with Kevin as fast as he could up the stairs.
"Hails," Jay walked in the house holding Blake upside down in one arm and dragging a suitcase behind him with the other, "He's out of control."
Hailey laughed softly and grabbed Blake from him, "What were you doing? Do you want to help me unpack the dishes?"
Blake immediately grabbed her hair and twirled it around as he babbled at her.
"Oh really?" Hailey asked. She carried him to the kitchen, "You just like getting into trouble?"
Jay spotted the pack-n-play in the living room, so he grabbed it and quickly set it up next to the kitchen table, "Here you go. Keep him contained."
Hailey laughed while putting Blake in it once she'd taken off his jacket. He immediately cried out and pushed his hands against the side.
"You were trying to run away," Jay shook his head, "Mom and Dad can't keep watching you and unpack at the same time."
Hailey opened a box labeled 'kitchen' and passed Blake a spatula and a ladle, "Here you go, baby."
Blake immediately smiled and waved them around.
Jay leaned against the counter to watch Blake entertain himself, "He started off just pulling at the grass and then I looked up and he was running down the sidewalk."
"Wonderful," Hailey sighed, "All right, I'll keep an eye on him. How much is left?"
"Everything's pretty much out, we just need to put it away," Jay shrugged.
"Best part," Hailey rolled her eyes.
Jay chuckled and stepped toward her to put his hands on her hips, "How're you feeling?"
Hailey breathed in, "I don't know. Sort of weird."
Jay nodded and looked around, "We'll make it work. We'll put everything away and have pictures up soon and we can start painting next weekend."
"We don't have to paint a lot," Hailey said, "Down here's pretty good."
"But we can start the nursery and the boys' rooms," Jay smiled a little, "That's always fun."
"Did you hear Drew's list for his room?" Hailey laughed, "He wants a wall of stripes."
"That's not happening," Jay said, "One color, maybe two, per room and no elaborate designs."
Hailey laughed harder, "Do you want to tell him?"
Jay shook his head and rubbed his hands over her back, "He'll live."
"Sure," Hailey smiled and reached up to kiss him, "I need to unpack all of this now."
"Telling me to go away?" Jay teased.
"Telling you to get back to work," Hailey smirked.
"Ah," Jay chuckled. He brushed his hand over Blake's head, "I'll go make sure all the beds are in the right spot then start unpacking our room."
"Thank you," Hailey said as he walked away. She let out a breath and fell into a slow rhythm of putting everything in the kitchen away.
Soon enough, Vanessa came in the kitchen carrying a large box labeled 'nursery.' "Hailey," she said, "Is this for Blake or the baby?"
Hailey glanced up from putting food in the fridge, "Baby. Blake's stuff all says Blake on it in blue sharpie. Baby's stuff is written in silver."
"You were pretty organized," Vanessa laughed softly. She set the box on the table then squatted next to Blake to put her hands up against his through the mesh of the pack-n-play.
"Figured I needed to be if I was moving five people," Hailey returned to sorting through the fridge, "And it just helped me feel better knowing that everything was organized and color coded, especially since everyone was helping us."
"What do you even have for the nursery so far?" Vanessa asked. She straightened up to pull the lid off the box.
"Uh," Hailey let out a breath and closed the fridge, "A few outfits, a couple of Blake's toys that I didn't want to get rid of, it's mostly just random baby stuff that I either saw at the store and wanted or that Blake grew out of."
Vanessa's eyes widened as she pulled out the Tinkerbell outfit Christine had given Hailey, "This is the cutest thing ever, oh my god."
Hailey blushed and began putting plates up in the cabinets.
"Where'd you get this?" Vanessa looked at the tag, "Did you go to the Disney store without me? You know I love that store."
"My mom," Hailey said quietly.
"Oh," Vanessa put the dress away, "When-"
"I couldn't find it in myself to throw it out," Hailey admitted. She turned to look at Vanessa, "She gave it to me that last time I saw her and she was just so rude about the kids and yet I'm still holding on to that damn dress."
Vanessa shrugged, "She's your mom."
"She pretty much said that my boys aren't good enough for her," Hailey said.
Vanessa nodded, "And I don't blame you at all for writing her off, I'm proud of you for doing it, but she's still your mom, Hailey, and I think that makes throwing out certain gifts from her hard. You also love Tinkerbell, so that can't be easy."
Hailey let out a breath and walked over to pick up the dress, "I don't know if I can ever actually dress her in it. Jay and I have been telling Drew for a while now that this baby does not mean any more to us than he or Blake and I'm worried that keeping this dress could mean different."
Vanessa put her hand on Hailey's arm. She waited for her to meet her eyes to shake her head, "It doesn't. It's a dress, Hailey. Hasn't your mom given gifts to Blake and Drew too?"
"Yeah, but-"
"No," Vanessa shook her head again, "I know your mom really hurt you with what she said, it was disgusting, but you can't beat yourself up over a dress. And look how tiny it is! It's a little baby dress and it's adorable and it shouldn't be scary. No one is judging you for keeping it. Unless, did Jay say something? If he did, I-"
Hailey cut her off with a soft laugh, "He didn't say anything. I don't know if he even remembers it. He certainly didn't judge me when I first brought it home and showed him."
"Good," Vanessa nodded, "Told you he was a good guy."
Hailey laughed more and shook her head. She put the dress back in the box and closed it up.
"What are the nursery plans?" Vanessa asked.
"Pink," Hailey smiled, "Not super girly, but I want it pink. I want it to be everything I didn't have, so we're gonna do pink and baby animals."
Vanessa's face lit up, "I love that so much. Can I please help?"
Hailey laughed, "Of course."
"I cannot wait," Vanessa picked up the nursery box, "Okay, I'm gonna go put this upstairs in her room, and then I'll be right back and can help you tackle the kitchen."
Hailey let out a breath and looked around, "Yeah, I keep feeling like I'm doing a lot and then I realize there are more boxes and it feels like it never ends."
Vanessa gently nudged her arm, "We'll get it done, promise."
Hailey smiled slightly and watched Vanessa carry the large box out of the room. She turned to Blake, "What do you think? Can we do it?"
Blake put his hands up, "Mama."
"Oh, my baby boy," Hailey breathed while picking him up, "I love you. I hope you know that. Daddy and I love you so much. We always want you to be happy. We want this to be a happy house for you, okay? So if you ever feel sad or frustrated or scared or even angry, please let us know. We're always going to protect you and help you."
Blake replied softly to her and lightly patted her face before pressing his lips to her cheek.
Hailey laughed and kissed him back, "Thank you, sweetheart."
Blake smiled and hugged her tightly around the neck, "Mama."
Forgetting about all the boxes around her, Hailey sat down and closed her eyes as she held Blake close to her. Some things were more important than putting silverware in the drawer.
Jay took a piece of pizza out of the box and ate it as he set the entire thing on the table. He swallowed then said, "Dig in."
Drew watched him and laughed softly, "You need to sit!"
Jay winked before turning to grab a beer from the fridge.
Hailey whined quietly, "I want one."
"Sorry, babe," Jay wiped his mouth with a napkin. Once he finished chewing, he kissed her head then sat down at the kitchen table.
"Why aren't you getting one for her?" Drew asked while standing, "That was rude. I guess I'll grab it."
Hailey shook her head, "It's okay, thank you, though. I can't have one."
"Oh," Drew frowned, "Why?"
"Beer's not good for babies," Hailey said.
Drew slowly nodded, "Well, what do you want to drink?"
"Um," Hailey let out a long breath, "Maybe I'll have…hmm…"
Drew bit his lip and rubbed his arm.
Jay chuckled, "Make up your mind, woman."
Hailey laughed, "Okay, okay, sorry, I'll have whatever you have."
Drew's eyes widened, "What?"
Hailey nodded, "Just pour two glasses of whatever."
"That makes me nervous," Drew whispered as he walked over to the fridge.
Jay took a big bite of pizza and noticed Blake pretending to chew like him as he watched him eat. He chuckled and tore off a piece, "Want some?"
"Jay," Hailey shook her head, "He can't eat that."
"It's just pizza," Jay split the small piece in half again then held it to Blake's mouth, "Try it, buddy."
Blake smiled and happily ate the pizza. His eyes widened and he put his hands out.
"See, he loves it," Jay grabbed another piece and started cutting it up in tiny pieces, "Anything for my Buzz."
Hailey rolled her eyes, "He has you wrapped around his finger."
"They all do," Jay chuckled.
Drew slowly walked back to the table with two glasses of root beer, "Can the baby drink root beer?"
Hailey smiled wide, "Yes, the baby can definitely have root beer, thank you so much."
Drew sat down and passed her a glass, "You're welcome." He grabbed a piece of pizza, "Since we live closer to Bartoli's now, can we get it for dinner more?"
Jay laughed, "I don't know, we already used to have it a lot before."
"Just once a week," Drew shrugged, "Maybe now we can have it twice a week."
"I am not against that," Hailey winked.
Drew smiled and ate his pizza.
"What else should we do in this new house?" Jay asked, "Anything on the list for tomorrow?"
Drew quickly dropped his pizza and put his hand up.
"Yes?" Hailey laughed.
"We really need to set up my birdfeeders tomorrow," Drew said, "That has to be a priority."
"All right," Jay nodded, "Anything else?"
"I want you," Hailey pointed to Drew, "To figure out what exactly you want your room to look like so I can go out and buy paint this week while you're at school."
Drew finished chewing then said, "Stripes."
Jay sighed, "Really? Stripes?"
"Vertical," Drew nodded, "I think it'll look cool."
"Maybe just a few," Jay said, "Stripes seem like a lot of work."
Hailey looked at Drew and whispered, "I'll talk to him."
Drew laughed softly and continued eating.
Jay raised an eyebrow, "Hailey."
"We'll figure it out," Hailey waved her hand, "Don't worry."
Jay let out a breath, "Sure. And Blake's room?"
"Toy Story," Drew quickly answered, "Duh."
Hailey smiled, "We can do Toy Story again."
Jay chuckled and shook his head, "Do I get any opinion?"
Drew shrugged, "Maybe not."
"It is my house," Jay leaned against the table.
Drew chewed his lip, "I guess that is true. Maybe you can have an opinion, but I'm pretty determined and I know what I want."
Jay laughed, "There's no denying that."
"You can help with our room," Hailey touched his arm.
"Thank you," Jay smiled, "I'll make sure to choose something outrageous."
Hailey shoved him with a laugh, "Shut up."
Jay quietly mocked her and grabbed another piece of pizza.
Hailey raised an eyebrow, "Have something to say, Jay Halstead?"
He chuckled and wiped his hands on his napkin, "Actually, yeah, I do."
"Oh, really?" Hailey sat back in her seat and crossed her arms.
"Mhmm," Jay smirked, "I would like to say that I love you and I'm very happy we moved here."
Hailey laughed and rolled her eyes, "How nice."
"You're supposed to say it back," Drew said.
"Yeah, Mom," Jay chuckled.
Hailey laughed harder and got out of her chair to walk over to Jay. She tilted his chin up, "I love you, dork."
Jay smiled and pulled her onto his lap to kiss her.
Drew sighed, yet still smiled slightly. He still wasn't a huge fan of kissing and didn't really get why people liked to touch their mouths especially when they were in the middle of dinner…but he did like seeing how happy his parents were.
Maybe it wasn't going to be such a bad house at all.
A/N: Hi again :) I just wanted to pop back in real quick and say I'm going to try my hardest to get one last chapter out this week, but that I am leaving this coming Saturday for over two weeks on vacation and won't be posting anything. I'll probably still pop on Twitter at night if you're there, but I won't be here for a bit. I really am going to try to get one more chapter out this week though this is just a warning in case something strange happens (which I really hope it won't because I'm looking forward to the next one :) ). Talk soon! (And ps thanks again for reading! And special thanks to hailshalstead for giving me inspo weeks ago for the beginning section of this chapter!)
