Paul's bar opened the following weekend as planned. While Bella had insisted on attending for a little while to show support, she and Jacob left much earlier than everyone else. The place was packed throughout the weekend. Paul couldn't have been happier, and Angela enjoyed working with him and Rachel. Rachel was surprised to find she enjoyed tending the bar as well. She'd been feeling burned out with her job in the medical field for quite some time and admitted that it was a nice change. As long as business kept up, and it was sure to increase with tourist season, things could go very well for Paul and Rachel.
Leah had surprised Bella and Emily Monday morning when she showed up and started cleaning.
"What are you doing, Leelee?" Emily asked in surprise.
"Keeping this one off her feet so that my niece stays put," Leah said, grinning at Bella. "I'm going to go clean Billy's when I'm done."
Bella couldn't stop herself from tearing up. Leah rolled her eyes, grabbed her supplies, and headed toward the bathroom.
"I'm gonna make Jacob pay her for this," Bella whispered to Emily.
"NO, YOU'RE NOT," Leah yelled across the house, making Emily laugh.
"Don't even fight her," Emily said, grinning.
"Trust me, I know," Bella said.
Later that night, when they were alone, she told Jacob about Leah showing up to clean for them and how she'd refused to be paid for doing it.
"Leah cleans around the shop all the time, too," Jacob said, frowning. "I'm up her pay a bit. She can't argue when it's already on the paycheck."
By the end of the following week, Jacob and Bella were having breakfast alone in the kitchen. Leah walked into the house with her check in hand, scowling.
"Bella Swan, you wanna tell me what the hell this is?" Leah asked her.
"What's wrong?" Jacob asked, smirking. "Did we miss some of your hours?"
"No. It's too much, Jake. You know that, and I know that. I told Bella I didn't want paid to clean," Leah said, staring at Bella.
"I didn't pay you for cleaning," Bella said, grinning. "You said not to."
"Sis, look at your hourly," Jacob said while he continued to eat.
Leah lifted her check stub to read it. Wide-eyed, she looked up at Jacob in surprise. "You can't be serious. Jacob, I answer the fucking phone," Leah said.
"You do a lot more than that, Leah," Jacob said affectionately. "You're good with the customers, keep Quil's ass in check, clean the lobby and bathrooms, sell baked stuff to the customers. Hell, we have people stopping in just to buy Em's muffins now. When I can keep the guys out of them, anyway." Jacob laughed.
"Jacob, it's not a hard job, and I actually like it. Don't tell the guys that, but I do like my job," Leah said.
"I'm glad you like it, Leah, and we'd be fucked without you if you really want to know. Just because you like your job doesn't mean you don't deserve to get paid for your work. Just trust me, okay?" Jacob stood to put his plate in the sink, and Leah yanked him into a hug. He laughed and embraced her back warmly.
"You're going to be the best Alpha, Jake. Really. Thank you," Leah said sincerely and headed out the door.
"Your age just went up, Jake," Bella teased. "I think you're like 50 now."
"God, I hope my junk still works this well when I'm fifty," he joked, and Bella cackled.
"Nope, I take it back. You're still 43," she said.
"Wow, 7-year loss for a dick joke?" he teased.
"A bad dick joke," she said and held her hand out. Jacob pulled out his wallet, handed her two dollar bills, one for each of their words, and she stuck them in the new swear jar.
"She's gonna have a college fund before she's two," Angela said as she walked into the kitchen.
"And thank you for your contributions," Jacob said. He snuck a peck to Angie's cheek before leaning down to kiss Bella.
"Off to work, dear?" Angela teased as he headed out the door.
"I swear to god, if people didn't know better, they'd think we were all, like, together in this house," Bella laughed, shaking her head.
"Sometimes, I even wonder," Angie joked. "Are you ready for the baby shower tomorrow?"
"I suppose. It will be interesting to see, I'm sure," Bella said. Her restrictions had caused some plan changes for everyone's work schedules, which meant doing the one thing Bella hadn't wanted to do. Relinquishing baby shower plans to Alice.
Alice, of course, had been more than delighted. She was frustrated with Edward's situation currently. She couldn't see Billie's future, nor that of the child's, and her constant searching triggered her migraines. Her visions had come in handy for her baby shower plans, however. Bella had a feeling Alice had figured out what others were bringing as gifts, which gave the Cullens a gift opportunity advantage. She'd let it slip already that Esme had bought her something that was needed, though Bella wasn't sure what the item was. Sarah's closet was already stuffed with an ample wardrobe by Alice, and Sarah wasn't even born yet. Bella secretly hoped Emily would have a girl so that she had someone to pass items down to. Angela's appointment had revealed what they had already all suspected. She was carrying a boy, the first of what would probably be the next pack. Knowing that Embry could possibly be Jake's half-brother made Bella wonder if Angela's child could end up the Alpha and Chief one day. Especially since he would be older than Jacob and Bella's future son. She'd voiced her concerns to Emily, who, unfortunately, had no words of comfort or wisdom on that particular topic. She admitted that she and Sam had discussed the possibility as well. It was not that Bella would mind her child not being Alpha and Chief one day that bothered her. It was the prospect of Jacob's heart being broken if Billy turned out to be Embry's father that worried her most.
The next day, Bella woke late to find her house bustling with activity. Alice and Rose had arrived early and had decorated her living room and kitchen for the baby shower. Emily was flitting around the kitchen, putting together last-minute food platters for the guys. Emmett had decided that Jacob needed a "pack party" of his own while the baby shower was going on, which would take place in the garage. Jacob called to invite Billy and Charlie, who were more than happy to be included.
"You know this is probably the first baby shower in history that has included wolves and vamps together, right?" Emily joked.
"It's going to be an experience, that's for sure," Angela had agreed.
Any discussion of wolves and vampires ended as soon as guests began to arrive.
A taxi showed up in their driveway to everyone's surprise, and the driver rushed out to pop the trunk. Bella couldn't help but grin as her mother and step-father stepped out of the cab. Phil ran directly to Bella and wrapped her in a hug.
"Hi," she called out excitedly, hugging him. "This is a surprise. I thought you guys weren't coming." Renee walked over to them, grinning happily.
"Well, Bella, I have to say," Renee said, "You told me that Emmett's wife Rosalie was a wonderful person. We certainly wouldn't be here today without her." Bella turned toward the house where Rose leaned in the kitchen doorway, smiling.
"Thank you," Bella told her sincerely. She had missed Phil. He had been good to her, after all.
"Bella, sweetheart, look at you," Phil said, standing back to take in her largely pregnant form. "You're all baby, darlin'."
Bella laughed, rubbing her belly. "Yeah. Ready for her to be on this side of my ribs, too."
Jacob had led Phil out to the garage. It didn't take long for him to hit it off with the others, including Charlie. Jacob later told Bella that Billy recognized Phil for having watched him play baseball. He was surprised to find that this was the man Renee had married. The three men ended up bonding, hilariously, over Emily's cooking while laughing about Renee's numerous calamitous attempts in the kitchen.
The baby shower went well. Bella was grateful that most had picked out necessities for gifts. The large item that Esme had ended up purchasing was a crib that could be switched to a toddler bed as Bella had wanted. They ended up with so many boxes of diapers, Bella was sure to be sharing them with Angela later on. Overall, it had been a wonderful day.
Later, after most had left, Renee sat in the kitchen with Bella, Angela, and Rose. Unable to avoid her curiosity any longer, Bella asked, "So, how is Billie?"
Rose glanced over at Renee hesitantly and sighed.
"Well, since your mom knows so much already, I suppose it doesn't matter," Rose said. "She's miserable, Bella. Billie is as big as you are already. She's going to give birth before you, we think. Literally any day now. She refuses to let Carlisle take the baby early. She's more worried about it than herself."
"Billie?" Renee asked. "Is that Edward's new singer's name?"
"Yes," Bella admitted. "Apparently, she looks like us, too. I haven't seen her, but,"
"Trust me," Rose interrupted, "She does. She looks more like Renee than you, though."
"Where is she from?" Renee asked, swallowing nervously.
"We aren't sure. Billie doesn't talk about her past and won't. She is eighteen and was about to be kicked out of the foster home she lived in when Edward met her," Rose said. "We wondered if there was a possible chance of you all being related. Then Jacob reminded us that Bella is the only child of two only children," Rose admitted.
"Women in my family all ran from each other," Renee said. "I was an only child, but my mother was one of six daughters. She took me and went off on her own, as did her sisters with their children. There could be a distant connection somewhere."
"Hmmm, well, that's some food for thought," Rose said. "Either way, we still doubt she's going to make it through this."
"If she keeps waiting, she won't," Renee warned. "It will rip its way out of her."
"She's been fully warned that there are some things venom can't overcome. And until it gets here, we have no idea if the child will survive, either. One thing we do know is it will definitely want blood. That's all she can keep down. Every time she tries to eat human food, it comes back up. She's got IVs running through her all the time, but nothing is working. I wish she'd just listen."
To everyone's surprise, a frantic pounding sounded at the kitchen door before Jasper poked his head inside.
"Awfully fucking ironic what you're talking about in here. Billie's in labor, and I need Jake," Jasper said.
"He's in the garage with Emmett still," Rose said.
"Wait a minute, why do you need Jake?" Bella asked in alarm.
"Because he's the only one who can touch any of us and maintain his calm," Jasper said urgently. "Billie's blood is going to make everyone but Carlisle frantic, and if Ed and Carlisle want to save her, they need someone to help them right now."
"But, Edward hates Jacob's guts," Bella argued.
"Which should tell you how desperate he is when he's specifically yelling for Jacob. I'm sorry, Sis, but we have to go right now," Jasper said and took off for the garage. Rose stood, kissed Bella's cheek, and flew out the door behind her brother toward the garage.
"Well, fuck," Renee said. "Looks like Phil's about to finally get his first lesson in vampire 101."
Bella handed her the swear jar.
(JPOV)
Jacob was bullshitting with Emmett, Charlie, Billy, and Phil in the garage when Jasper burst through the door. He attempted to calm himself when he saw Phil, though Jacob had already jumped up in alarm. Rose suddenly appeared at Jasper's side, staring at Jacob pleadingly.
Shit, something is really wrong.
"Is Bella okay?" Jacob asked in alarm.
"It's Billie," Jasper said as calmly as he could manage. "Ed wants your help. I'll explain on the way, but we have to go now."
"Edward wants Jacob's help?" Charlie asked and scoffed. "Are pigs flying outside or what?"
"Edward, as in Bella's ex-boyfriend?" Phil asked.
"Guys, I'll explain later," Jacob said and headed for the door. Emmett went to follow, and Jacob turned to ask him to stay. "Please, Bells is probably freaking out if she knows what's going on. They might need Rose's medical help, but someone will need to keep Bells calm."
"I'll stay here, then. Rose can explain. I'll keep Bella calm," Jasper said. "It's less dangerous for me to stay away anyway."
"Thank you," Jacob said and darted for the woods to phase. "Someone talk while we run," he yelled as he tied his shorts to his ankle.
Rose explained the situation on the way. Embry and Jared were both phased, listening to every word. They both abandoned their patrol course to follow.
Guys, it's okay, I got this, Jacob told them.
No fucking way. If shit goes south, you might need help, Embry snarled back.
Fine, Jacob growled. Can one of you at least go tell Sam what the hell is going on?
I got it, Jared said as he changed course again.
When they arrived at the Cullen mansion, chaos ensued. Jacob cringed at the sound of Billie's terrible screams before he could even get inside. He ran into the house and up the stairs.
"Jacob!" Edward yelled frantically, and he headed towards the sound.
"What can I do?" Jacob asked, taking in the sight of Billie's screaming form, laying on a hospital bed. She was gripping her large stomach in agony.
"Get him out, now!" she screamed. Jacob looked up in surprise.
"She means the child," Edward said as calmly as he could manage. Jacob walked over to Billie and did his best to force a smile at her.
"Hey," he lied in his attempt to soothe her, "it's going to be okay."
Carlisle had begun administering morphine, waiting for it to kick in and her to settle some before he picked up his scalpel.
"You're seriously going to cut her open right here," Jacob asked.
"We have to," Carlisle said solemnly. "We don't have a choice. The amniotic sac is hard like vampire skin. We'll have to tear through it to get him out if we want to save her. I couldn't even get around it to take a sonogram of the child this whole time."
"And it drinks blood. Is it going to attack when it comes out?" Jacob asked. He could feel himself trembling, though he somehow retained his calm.
"We're about to find out," Carlisle said as he brought the scalpel to her skin. Jacob looked into Billie's eyes and grabbed her hand as Carlisle pressed down.
She arched back in pain, screaming. She looked so much Bella at that moment that Jacob couldn't hold back his tears. He silently prayed to God that Sarah's birth would be nowhere near as traumatic.
"We're going to have to bite through it," Carlisle said frantically.
"Won't that start the changing process?" Jacob asked in alarm.
"It has to, Jacob. We have to get the child out and venom into her system as soon as possible, or she doesn't stand a chance," Edward choked out frantically. The smell of Billie's blood had filled the room, and his eyes were darkening in color by the second.
Carlisle had moved out of the way as Edward leaned down to bite into Billie's swollen stomach. She screamed as Edward let out a tearless sob.
"Im so sorry, baby. I'm so sorry," he choked out before biting down again. Jacob heard the sickening screech of ripping vampire flesh as Edward and Carlilse reached in to pull the creature from its womb.
Billie's screams had slowed down as the morphine finally kicked in. She stared up at her now crying child, who looked no more than a normal human baby at first glance.
It was a boy, its skin soft and white. His hair was the same fiery red as his father's.
Edward carefully placed the child in Billie's arms.
"Beautiful," she said softly. The infant on her chest turned its head toward its mother and bit down.
"Oh my god," Jacob couldn't help but say as Billie's heart seemed to sputter and then stopped.
"Billie? Baby?" Edward handed the child to Carlisle quickly. Jacob immediately tilted her head back to begin CPR. Edward pulled a large syringe out and shoved the needle directly into Billie's heart, injecting the thick clear liquid.
"What the hell is that?" Jacob asked.
"My venom," Edward said as he began chest compressions on the now very dead human girl.
"Come on, Billie," Jacob said as he continued to force air into her lungs. He took over the chest compressions as Edward began randomly biting Billie's limbs in an attempt to rush the spread of his venom through her body.
The child in Carlisle's arms was beginning to thrash against him crying. Jacob looked up in horror as the infant, who already had a mouth full of sharp, venom-coated teeth, wailed and snapped its mouth towards Carlisle's chest. The clan father stared sadly at Edward as he desperately attempted to revive his wife.
Suddenly Billie's eyes flew open. She sat up and screamed. The sound became strangled as blood flowed from her mouth. Her eyes rolled back, and she collapsed again.
The room was suddenly, horrifyingly silent as her heart again stopped.
"NO!" Edward screamed, frantically beginning chest compressions again. Carlisle fled the room with the screaming, snapping infant. Jacob could hear the fracturing of her ribs as Edward worked to revive Billie's poor, spent heart. He couldn't stop the flow of tears as he stared in shock at the poor dead girl who looked too much like his Bella for his aching heart to bear.
"Ed, she's gone," he said sadly.
"No!" Edward yelled again, a sob escaping. "Billie, please. Please, baby," he begged her lifeless body.
"I'm sorry," Jacob said helplessly.
Whatever terrible karma Edward had created for himself aside, he didn't deserve this, Jacob thought. No one deserved this. Billie sure didn't deserve this.
The sound of Edward's anguished screams tore through him as Edward suddenly fled the room. Jacob followed him down the stairs and outside. He gaped in horror as the rest of Edward's family stood around a large pit fire that was now burning the headless infant's body. Edward dropped to his knees in front of the fire. The purple smoke filled the air, reeking of incense and bleach.
Though partially human, the child had not been human enough. Straight from the womb, it had been eager to kill. Carlisle had done the one thing he detested having to do more than anything he'd ever done. He'd taken a child's life. It had been for the greater good, though Jacob could see the pain in his face. It was his grandchild he had destroyed. Carlisle's heart was broken.
Rose and Esme clung to each other, sobbing as they watched the child burn. Jacob looked up to find his pack in the distance, taking in the scene with horror-stricken faces. Another sob came from above them, and Jacob looked to find Alice high up in the trees looking over them. The tiny vampire looked no more than a sad, frightened child from where she sat, watching her beloved brother's life collapse around him.
Edward stood slowly and turned toward Jacob in anguish. He was back to being the burning man that Jacob had witnessed on the mountainside. The man who knew he had lost everything he had ever wanted. Except now, it had happened again, but in a much more devastating way.
Death left scars that could never be healed. Jacob had learned that the day his mother died.
"Thank you for trying to help us save her," Edward said, his voice as monotone as an automaton. He was barely functioning. That much was plain to see. "You can leave now if you would like."
"I'm sorry it ended this way," Jacob said sincerely. He might not like Edward or all of the bullshit he had done, but Billie hadn't deserved any of it.
Her death was a tragedy, regardless of the circumstances.
"Yes," Edward said softly, agreeing with Jacob's thoughts. "And it's my fault, regardless of the circumstances as well."
"NO!" Alice screeched in horror just before Edward reached up to grip the sides of his head. The screech of his ripping flesh filled the air as Edward released a ferocious roar and viciously ripped his own head from his shoulders. His lifeless body fell backward on top of the fire and the ashes of his incinerated child. His head hit the ground and rolled, stopping just shy of Jacob's feet.
Flashbacks of tossing Mike's head into the fire on top of Victoria's burning limbs flooded Jacob with nausea, and he quickly stepped away, turning his back to the scene. The other Cullens had screamed in horror. Jacob walked over to lean against a tree as he desperately attempted not to vomit.
It was one thing to rip apart a murdering monster to protect your loved ones. It was another thing altogether to watch one rip its own fucking head off.
Jacob could not stop the onslaught of tears as he looked up at the others. To everyone's surprise, Rose flew to his side, embracing him. He hugged her back, unable to look away as a distraught Emmett lovingly picked up Edward's head and placed it on his chest to burn with the rest of his body.
"He did this to spare us," Carlisle said softly. "He confided in me that he did not want to live without Billie. Before meeting her, Edward had not wanted to live anymore at all. He originally hoped that one of us would be angry enough to kill him if she did not make it, but I think he knew deep down that it would be too difficult. Jacob, when he saw how much guilt you harbored over what happened with Mike, he knew he couldn't do that to you or us. I believed he would end up going to the Volturi in the end."
There was a thump next to them as Alice dropped from the tree she had been perched in. "He was going to," she said. "It was a last-second decision. He knew I'd have stopped him one way or another."
Emmett pulled his tiny sister under his arm, dropping a kiss on the top of her head.
"We need to go tend to Billie's body," Esme said sadly. She turned and headed inside, unable to bear watching her son's body burning for another second. Jacob stepped over to hug Emmett before surprising Alice by embracing her as well.
"I really am very sorry for your loss. All of you," Jacob said. "I'm going to head home and send Jasper to be with you all. I need to be with Bells right now. I'm not sure how she'll take this news, honestly. If you all need us, you know where we are."
"Thank you, Jacob," Carlisle said solemnly.
"Love you, bro," Emmett said.
"You too, man," Jacob nodded and headed towards his pack. He phased and ran home with the others at his heels, respectfully leaving him be. Each except Embry went their separate ways as Jacob reached his backyard. He had not even realized he was crying again until the kitchen door slammed behind him. His father, Charlie, Jasper, Bella, and Angela waited patiently around the living room, chatting. Embry followed him to where the others looked up at him in surprise.
"Jasper," Jacob said and sighed, shaking his head. The vampire needed to hear nothing else before darting out the front door as fast as his feet could carry him.
"Jacob, what happened?" Bella asked anxiously. He walked over and sat down next to her, pulling her against his side to hug her close.
"I'm sorry, honey. They are gone," Jacob said.
"They didn't make it?" Bella asked as she teared up.
"No, honey, they didn't. There is more," Jacob admitted, attempting to brace himself for the meltdown he feared would come any second.
"What happened?" Bella asked. Jacob hesitated for a moment.
How do you tell someone that the person they once loved no longer existed as they knew it?
"Edward's dead, honey," Jacob said, finally. "He killed himself."
"Th-that's not possible," Bella said, shaking her head no frantically. "He wouldn't do that."
"Im sorry, Bells, it's true," Embry said. "He did it in front of us all. The whole pack. His whole family except Jasper. He's gone." The rest of the room looked up at him in horror.
"He killed himself? In front of everyone? In front of you kids?" Charlie asked in disbelief. Jacob could only nod in response. Crying, Angela stood to walk over and put her arms around Embry. Bella began to cry, and Jacob lifted her into his lap, hugging her close.
They sat that way in silence for a while before their fathers decided to leave and let them all get some much-needed solitude and rest. Though he had barely had a chance to come to terms with what he had just witnessed, Jacob was more worried about Bella's well-being than his own. He carried her to bed and held her close. After a while, both of their tears had slowed enough for her to ask him what had happened. He filled her in, skirting around the more gruesome details as best as he could. They were both emotionally exhausted by the time she fell asleep.
Jacob couldn't stop thinking about Billie's eyes flying open as she screamed and vomited blood from her mouth. Sleep did not come easy for him. Billie was replaced by Renee with a baby Bella replacing the headless burning infant in his nightmares. He woke multiple times throughout the night, frantically checking on the woman in his arms. He was grateful, at least, that she was sleeping soundly instead of screaming every few hours as she would have been just one short year ago. While she did not have nightmares about Edward even half as often as she once did, Jacob hoped that his death would somehow set her free of them.
Edward Cullen would finally rest in peace.
It was time for Jacob and Bella to live in it.
