A/N: Hey, guess this is a sequel of sorts, to Not My Colonel. It's not required you read it beforehand, but I encourage you to read my other stories if you like this. This is slightly longer. Hopefully, this is the happy ending some of you wanted in the first one.
Sam had been sitting in the briefing room with Jack, Daniel, and Teal'c. They were to meet a new member of the SGC. Although it wasn't uncommon for SG-1 to do a meet and greet, Sam just had a feeling this would be slightly different. She wasn't sure why but it was like a 6th sense. General Hammond had come through the door, and Sam couldn't believe her eyes. She looked up at the man who stepped out from behind General Hammond.
"Steve?!" Sam said quickly, standing up.
Everyone had odd looks on their face, but the man quickly came around and hugged Sam, who quickly melted into the man's embrace.
Sam pulled back and looked at his face. He didn't hesitate to but his hands to her face, and she didn't shy away. Of course, Jack had to ruin the moment with a loud clearing of his throat.
Sam turned around, beaming her bright smile.
"Sorry, this is Steven Westbrooke, Lt. Colonel Steven Westbrooke she said, surprised seeing his uniform.
"Well, it seems you two know each other." General Hammond claims.
Sam then blushes for the first time and puts her head down for just a second.
"We served a lot of time in the gulf together," Sam claimed.
"I didn't realize." General Hammond claimed.
"We were in different troops, and it wouldn't have really coincided in our files," Sam claimed.
General Hammond nodded.
"Well, as Major Carter stated, Colonel Westbrooke here has been selected for his decorated service and time as a fighter pilot. He will be joining SG-3 replacing Major Frelan."General Hammond claimed.
Everyone looked down for a moment remembering the man who saved his whole team, using himself as a shield of protection for the rest of his team to get back through the gate.
"I know SG-3 needs some time, so I am hoping you guys can show him the ropes get him used to it, and then he'll be joining SG-3.
"Of course, sir." Colonel O'Neill claimed,
"If Sam can welcome him with open arms, so can I," Jack said sarcastically.
Daniel shot Jack a look, and he shrugged his shoulders. General Hammond ignored the banter.
"You're in good hands, Westbrooke; these are the best people I have." General Hammond claimed.
"I have no doubt, General," Steven said as he looked at Sam.
Sam couldn't believe Steven Westbrooke was once again in her mist.
She couldn't help the flood of memories coming back to her. She had met Steven while in basic training, oddly enough. They had gotten along pretty well, and he was brilliant. He was one of the few who could keep up with her ramblings of physics and scientific theories. He was into aviation and the science of it all. He could explain how every instrument worked and had even had plans and ideas about building better, faster planes. They had met back up sometime during the gulf war. While they were together, they were just scouting. They would spend their downtime talking about their hopes and dreams, going over ideas with each other. One night they had been talking about what they hoped their next assignments were, Sam had told him she had hoped to be working in a lab, and he had expected to be testing out the latest planes.
Looking back, Sam couldn't really say if she had fallen for the man because he was there or because of the way he so easily understood her, like no one else prior had. They talked about their favorite foods one night as they once again were trying to figure out what the dinner meal was. They had decided to take a walk, something they often did, and that's when Steven Westbrooke kissed her lips, and they found an empty tent and never looked back. The whole relationship was short, only about 3 months. Their troops separated. They both knew it was time for them to do the same. No one made a promise to keep in touch or look out for each other. It was a mutual understanding. When they had gone their separate ways, Sam couldn't deny it hurt for a little bit. She mourned the loss of their friendship more than their physical relationship, not to say anything was lacking.
When she saw him again, here and now, it had been 10 years since she had seen him. He looked good, damn good. He was bigger than she remembered, taller too. The way he held her close just a few moments ago seemed utterly natural, and she couldn't wait to tell him anything and everything about the Stargate program. She wasn't sure if she wanted her past and present to collide, but here it was, and so far, she had to admit it felt good to have someone who knows her so well.
SG-1 was still in the briefing room. As always, Daniel introduced himself first and explained what he did, Teal'c had explained who he was, and Jack just shook Steven's hand quickly and said: "If you were with Carter, you should be fine. Let's go; get some lunch."
Jack lead the way but broke away from the group when someone had asked him a question. Sam was in front of the line looking at the meal offerings for the day. She got her meal and looked over at the desert. They were out of jello, so she left without some; not overly upset, she found a table. Daniel and Teal'c follow suit as Steven took his time trying to take in everything. Jack was trying his best to ignore the new guy and erase what he had seen earlier that day. Sam was too close to the man, and Jack had to admit he was already jealous of this guy, and now he would be stuck with him for weeks training him before he went off to SG-3.
Jack had looked over at the table to see Sam, Daniel and Teal'c seated. He scanned around and saw Steven eyeballing all his options. Jack got his food and noticed that they restocked the jello and got a red for himself. He looked over and noticed Sam was Jello free and grabbed her the blue.
Jack and Steven had arrived at the table almost at the same time and spoke at the same time.
"Sam," Steven said. "Carter," Jack said.
"They brought out blue jello." both men said.
Sam looked at the two men, both sort of embarrassed, and Sam couldn't help but laugh.
"Thanks, guys," she said as Jack and Steven hold it out to her trying to edge each other out.
"Here we go," Daniel said.
Sam heard him and Teal'c nodded, but Steven and Jack were too involved sizing each other up to notice.
Sam had to bite her tongue from saying "boys." and continued to eat her meal.
Once again, Daniel was the one who started the conversation.
"So Steven, how did you wind up in the SGC?" Daniel asks.
"Luck, I guess, Sam knows this, but I've always been big into flying, I wanted to be a test pilot, and a few months ago, I was asked if I wanted to test things "beyond my wildest dreams," I said yes and was taken to the complex in Nevada. I've been there 6 months when I was asked if I wanted to know where all the new tech came from. I couldn't turn it down, and here I am." Steven claims.
Sam smiles at his condensed story, happy to know his dreams had come true.
Daniel proceeded to tell his story of how he ended up with SG-1 and Teal'c had shared his. When it was Jack's turn, he stood up and said, "Time to go, campers."
Sam rolled her eyes, knowing Jack was avoiding Steven at all costs.
"Let me show you my lab." Sam offered.
Jack stuck his head in between the two of them.
"Carter, works on a lot of deadly dangerous stuff in there, don't touch anything." Jack chimed in.
Sam smirks at Jack once again, "I'm sure he'll be fine, sir."
Sam and Steven go to her lab, and she shows her around. She feels like a child catching up with her best friend after a summer break.
"It's been a long time Sam," Steven said.
"It has." Sam agreed.
Steven seems to gravitate towards her, and she doesn't stop him from putting his hands on her hips.
She tells Steven there are cameras everywhere and gives a nod to the one in her lab. He quickly understands and pulls away.
"I'm sorry if this isn't what you want," Steven says.
"No, I don't know what I want 10 years is a long time, but when I see you, it seems like all that time has melted away." In almost a whisper, she says, not wanting her ears to hear the thoughts she just spoken out loud.
Steven nods and agrees and finds himself leaning towards her again, her gravitation so strong on him.
"I take it no girlfriend, no wife," Sam claims.
He laughed out loud, and she did as well, knowing how messed up the situation was.
"I might have time when I'm dead," Steven claims.
Sam stopped laughing. It was a painfully real statement for her.
"Please, don't. I know it's a coping mechanism, but you have to know this is the most dangerous you have ever been in here. You've just seen the tip of the iceberg in Nevada." Sam claims.
Steven looks into her eyes and knows she's serious.
He nods her head and shifts topics, finally focusing on what she is working on.
It's about 2 hours later, and when Daniel walks into Sam's lab, offering to whisk Steven away to see his lab.
Steven hesitated for just a second before agreeing to go with Daniel.
"You two have a lot in common," Sam says to the guys, both smiling, happy to know they will get along.
It wasn't two minutes later that Jack walked through Sam's lab.
"Sir, what can help you with?" Sam asks.
"Do I always need your help when I swing by your lab? Can't I just come by for a friendly chat Carter?" Jack asks.
Sam raises an eyebrow.
"T, teach you that?" Jack asks.
Sam looks at him again.
"He's rubbing off on you, you know," Jack claims.
"What do you want, Colonel?" Sam asks.
"Nothing like I said, just swinging by to say hi. Where is Easterstream?" Jack asks.
"Don't, you know it's Westbrooke. He's with Daniel right now," Sam claims.
"Oh, so he can leave you alone," Jack stated.
"Jack, don't start. Steven and I were friends a long time ago," Sam said.
Jack knew he had pissed her off when she used his first name.
"Okay, Carter, you seem awfully close." Jack states.
Jack was now almost in Sam's face, but she didn't back down, and he finally looked away.
"Look, Carter, I just don't want this to turn into an issue. Is there anything I should know about this guy?" Jack asks honestly.
"He's a hell of a pilot. He's smart can tell you every gage and dial. He can tell you the history of every plane imaginable. He knows the science behind all of it too. I haven't seen him in 10 years, but I would have to guess that he's going to fit in fine." Sam stated.
"People change. A lot of things can happen in 10 years," Jack claims.
Sam nods knowingly, and Jack leaves the lab.
