Day 29: Vein and Day 26: Laughter

He just turned the volume back up. Vlad frowned, turning it down. Danny glared back, turning it up.

"You can't pretend you can't hear me, Daniel," Vlad spoke up over the Dumpty Humpty music blasting on the show. Danny was happily watching a documentary on his favorite band. Till the fruitloop decided he wanted to come back.

Ohmer watched the exchange curiously. It was so obvious that Phantom hated him. Even if they were, somehow, related, the relationship seemed incredibly toxic and unsafe. But she still didn't really believe Vlad's story. It seemed...so fishy.

Especially when all these supposed legal documents he gave her in their private meeting, all this proof that Phantom was supposedly his child, just were not real. Or they were real, but they didn't match anybody's records. Nobody by the name Daniel James Kulagina, the supposed real name given to Phantom by his supposed mother, who was again supposedly some woman Vlad had a brief affair with, ever seemed to exist and also fit Phantom's demographics and given information. The only one that was semi-close had died well before Vlad himself was even born.

The social security number didn't match. The schools Vlad claimed to put Phantom in didn't recall any Daniel Kulagina or Daniel Masters, nor did the private homeschooling group Vlad claimed he eventually enrolled Phantom under.

Vlad was completely full of shit. She was just waiting for the final nail in the coffin.

There was a brief knock, and her wife opened the door a crack.

"Hey, Lizzie, can I talk to you?" she questioned. Ohmer nodded. She glanced at Danny.

"Danny, I'm stepping out for just a moment okay? Please behave, and lower the volume a bit, we need to be respectful of your neighbors," she told him. He looked a little guilty, immediately turning the volume down. "Thank you. I'll be right back."

She closed the door behind her.

"What's going on?" she asked. Dr. Carrington held up a file she was holding.

"We got results for Mayor Masters and Danny," she explained. She opened it, holding it up so that Ohmer could read it. "First result was yes. Second was no."

Ohmer gave a curious hum, taking the file from her and scanning the entire document. These results were...incredibly interesting to say the least. She had no clue how he could have faked a positive the first go around. And the second one conflicting it directly told her a lot. But either way, she knew that he was going to fight her on this. He was so oddly persistent.

"Thank you," she told her. She tucked it under her arm. "I'm going to just talk to his lawyers about it."

"Not going to talk to him directly?" Dr. Carrington question. Ohmer shook her head no.

"No, I think it's best to just talk lawyer to lawyer by now," she replied. "I know he's going to argue with me on this and demand more testing or claim that something was biased or went wrong or some kind of fraud. He seems very…"

"Emotional?" Dr. Carrington suggested. Ohmer chuckled.

"A generous and light way of putting it," she said. "I have no idea why he's trying to claim Danny's his kid or why he wants him to be so bad. Especially when Danny clearly hates him."

"I can't think of any reason myself," her wife confessed. "Either way, we should probably kick him outta here. He's not his dad, and Danny needs to go get his x-rays done anyway. I really wanted to wait until things died down around here to avoid people seeing him. If he needs surgery again, I'll call Mrs. Fenton, but right now she said she and her husband have to get some things done for their daughter's college and eat non-hospital dinner."

"Good call," Ohmer mused. "Oh! That kinds reminds me." She reached into her pocket, pulling out a metallic bracelet that matched one that she was wearing. "Mrs. Fenton gave me these earlier, she said that it helps prevent ghost possession and influence. She said she made a huge amount for the hospital employees that she'll be delivering in the next few days. I really don't think Danny will do anything, but it's nice to have when ya know."

"Yeah, especially after everything. Just life in Amity Park," Dr. Carrington joked. She accepted the bracelet, giving her wife a light peck. She slipped it on. "Thanks. You handle the old man, I'll go get Danny."

"And after that I'll go pick us up actual dinner," Ohmer promised. "We can just eat in my office."

"Perfect!"

The women re-entered the room. Despite neither hearing a commotion, the room was in a slight mess. The TV had been turned off. The guest chairs were knocked over, the mayor's suit having a large noticeable burn mark on the sleeve as he was pressed against the wall. Danny himself was standing on the hospital bed, holding his IV stand like a baseball bat and making somewhat quiet, but noticeable angry shrieking sounds.

"Danny," Dr. Carrington lightly scolded, putting her hands on her hips, though her wife could tell that she was holding back laughter at the ridiculous scene. The ghost teen instantly put the IV stand back on the ground, plopping to a sitting position on the bed, staring guiltily. "Please don't use the hospital equipment like this. You could have gotten yourself even more hurt."

"Are you alright, Mr. Masters?" Ohmer turned her attention to the billionaire pressed to the wall.

"I'm fine," he insisted. He brushed the burned part of his suit. "Daniel's just still a bit...moody today." Ohmer gave a slight hum.

"Well, Dr. Carrington needs to get some x-rays done, make sure the ghost attack didn't do any extra damage," she said. "Then procedure depends from there. I advise you to go ahead and head home."

Mayor Masters made a sour face at her.

"I should be here," he insisted. "As his father, I deserve to be here and make those choices." Ohmer shook her head, holding up her file.

"Actually, we just got the results back, and you aren't. I'm sorry." At her news, Mayor Masters' face dropped in complete shock. "I'll be emailing and calling your lawyers later today to update them and to inform them of your other potential options if you wish to pursue this more."

The look of shock turned into a cold, angry stare that ran a shiver down her spine. It was so similar to when he was trying to buy Danny from her. Ohmer could almost swear that his eyes were glowing, he looked so angry. He turned his attention to the files, and he did a double take.

"What's that on your wrist?" he asked. Ohmer glanced at it.

"Oh, it's an anti-ghost bracelet, just a small gift from Mrs. Fenton," she explained. His face soured, and he didn't reply. He just pushed past her, quite rudely, and out the door.

"What's his deal?" Dr. Carrington asked. She had watched the whole thing, Danny having remained sitting down properly in his bed with his whiteboard.

"Ah, who knows," Ohmer shrugged it off. She snorted in amusement as Danny showed her his whiteboard, which simply said He's a fruitloop. "That's a good way of putting it. Do you happen to know why he's so hung up on this?" Danny tensed. He erased his whiteboard with his elbow before jotting his answer down.

Hard to explain. He's not my dad though.

Dr. Carrington gave a curious hum as she read it. She glanced to Ohmer. Neither really know what to make of the situation. She brought her full attention to his IV, and she gave a light frown.

"You ripped your IV out." While it was still taped to his arm, the needle was definitely no longer attached to his vein. Danny shot her an apologetic look. "It's okay, you just need to be careful. Which should be easier, since Mr. Masters isn't coming back in here?" She shot her wife a questioning look as she said the last bit. Ohmer confirmed with a nod.

"Or, well, best that I can," she replied. "I'm sure he's going to fight it. But he doesn't really have any ground to stand on anymore." Danny looked relieved. Dr. Carrington quickly got his new IV set up.

"There we go," she said, mostly to herself. Dr. Carrington gently held Danny's jaw in her hands, moving it as she examined it. "I don't think your jaw got re-injured, but better safe than sorry." She let go, and Danny nodded. "So just another quick x-ray."

What then?

The couple stared at each other, almost having a silent conversation. What then?

Well...it was really hard to say. He'd be okay for dismissal. They'd schedule check-up visits to determine when they could remove the wires. But dismissal potentially meant...

Ohmer cleared her throat.

"Well, after the x-ray, we're having dinner. Probably just something from the Nasty Burger," Ohmer avoided the obvious. "I don't know if ghosts can eat..." She stopped that train of thought when Danny gave a light nod to confirm that they did. She felt slightly guilty for having any kind of food brought to him. She just assumed ghosts didn't need food. "Well, in that case. What kind of milkshake would you like?" Danny's eyes lit up excitedly, and he jotted down an order.

Strawberry with kiwi and fudge!

"Oh that sounds disgusting," Dr. Carrington commented, making a face. Ohmer snorted with laughter. "I just want my normal."

"Alright, I'll be right back," Ohmer smiled. Her wife nodded, and she put Danny's blanket over his head to avoid the potential drama. Everything they thought they knew about ghosts just kept changing and changing.
