Prompt: "An emotional moment between Nobu and Okita, maybe involving Okita's illness?" — Niko

Okita yawned and stretched her arms as she walked out of their bedroom. Her hair was matted and just a bit greasy, but she didn't care much about that right now. Her wife was somewhere here, and Okita needed her morning company.

After a few minutes, she found her on the veranda.

"Ah, you're here," Nobu said quietly and patted the spot next to her. Her dark red hair glowed in the sunrise.

"What made you think I was going to get up?"

"You always do." Nobu smirked, and Okita sighed but took a seat next to her. "Just been thinking today."

"About?" Okita coughed lightly into her hand.

"The past."

"What is there to think about?"

"Too much."

"Hmph." She leaned onto Nobu's shoulder. "You know what Boudica always said about that."

"Our past is what brought us here, but we define who we are, yeah." Nobu nodded. "Just... it's still meaningful. And I always wondered what it'd be like if Mitsuhide ever showed up."

"Mmm." Okita buried her face into her wife's shoulder, growing somewhat tired once more but intent on listening. "Are you scared?"

"Me, scared?" She could hear the smile in Nobu's voice. "...I don't think so. I just wished that we could have all been happy in the end. I wasn't done, you know? I left a job unfinished."

"But it was finished for you," she said, turning her head back to the sunrise. "It's not your fault you weren't able to. Aren't you glad it worked out in the end?"

"Should I reflect that back to you, about the Shinsengumi?"

"...sorry."

"It's okay." Her wife wrapped an arm around her and pulled her in close. "I am happy. Things are okay, and I have you. I don't need anything else."
