I was awoken particularly early the next morning by the sound of my phone vibrating on the nightstand. Haruhi was still fast asleep beside me. I kissed her forehead before I rolled over to grab it. What could anyone possibly want this early?
Picking up my phone, I quickly turned the brightness down as to not wake Haruhi, as well as not to blind myself. It was barely past 3:30am. I had several missed calls and text messages from all of the other hosts. I rubbed my eyes to attempt to see a little better, I quietly got out of bed and walked into our bathroom.
I opened the most recent message, that had only come through a few minutes ago. It was, of course, from Tamaki.
"KYOYA WAKE UP." It read. Well, that couldn't possibly be good. He knows not to wake me up in the middle of the night like this, and seeing him refer to me by my name instead of "Mama" in what I assumed to be a crisis, was very out of the ordinary for him.
I scrolled back to the earliest messages, which were from around when Haruhi and I had gone to bed, around 10pm.
"HARUHI'S APARTMENT HAS BEEN BROKEN INTO AND SHE'S NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. I THOUGHT YOU DROPPED HER OFF?!" Oh god, no. It was too early for this.
The next message read, "I SIMPLY CAME TO DROP OFF SOME OF THE LEFTOVER FOOD FOR HER. HER HOME HAS BEEN TRASHED LIKE A BUNCH OF WILD ANIMALS TORE THROUGH THE PLACE. GLASS EVERYWHERE. THEY EVEN HAD THE AUDACITY TO LEAVE THE FRONT DOOR WIDE OPEN."
The next yet was a long soliloquy of his thoughts as to what these "bad men" did to Haruhi, as it was clear she wasn't there.
The only people who knew the extent of what was going on with her other than myself were Kaoru and Mori. If Tamaki had found her apartment like that, he was sure to have texted everyone about it. The last thing Haruhi would want is for everyone to be worrying about her.
The door creaked open. "Kyo, are you okay?" Haruhi wandered in, eyes barely open.
"I'm sorry love, I didn't mean to wake you." I walked over to her and kissed the top of her forehead. "I hate for this to be the first thing you hear today, but Tamaki stopped at your apartment, and…" She groaned loudly before I could finish.
"Please tell me dad wasn't there." She grumbled, still trying to wake herself up.
"It doesn't seem so from what the several hundred text messages I have…" She looked a little relived.
"What was he even doing there?"
"Trying to bring you leftover food from the party, it seems." I handed her my phone to read through the novella I had received through the night.
"This guy…" She yawned. Handing me back my phone, she sighed, before turning around and walking back out to the bedroom. I heard her rifling through something. I followed her out. She was sat on the floor looking through the back she had at the party trying to find her phone. When she finally found it, she looked at the screen and groaned again.
"273 messages. Who sends someone THAT many messages?" She complained.
"Someone worried about you. Besides, I'm sure those aren't ALL from Tamaki."
She sighed and looked up at me, still clearly exhausted. "I hate when you're right, sometimes." She smiled a little, before looking back at her phone.
She took a deep breath, and called presumably Tamaki. It took no more than a single ring for him to answer.
"HARUHI WHERE ARE YOU, ARE YOU ALRIGHT, I'VE BEEN-" He was screaming so loud I could hear him from nearly ten feet away.
"Senpai… I'm fine. I already know about the apartment. Nothing was stolen. It's just messy." She yawned.
"BUT WHERE ARE YOU?!" He screamed.
She held her forehead in her hand, leaning on it for support. She muted the phone and looked at me. "I should tell him. Shouldn't I?" She asked, already seeming to know the answer. I nodded.
"HARUHI?!" He yelled again.
She unmuted the phone. "Tamaki, calm down. I'm fine. I'm staying with Kyoya right now."
There was a long silence before he continued. "… Kyoya? Like, at his house?!"
"Yes, Senpai."
"WHO IS MAKING YOU SAY THAT? KYOYA WOULDN'T OPENLY INVITE SOMEONE INTO HIS SPACE LIKE THAT." He was being terribly dramatic.
I walked over to her, and sat beside her on the floor. I motioned for her to hand me the phone. She did.
"Tamaki, Haruhi is with me. Sitting on my bedroom floor as we speak."
He sat in what I assumed was stunned silence for a few more moments. "Kyoya… why is Haruhi with you right now?" He asked, his voice exuding a touch of both genuine concern and unbridled rage.
Haruhi took the phone from me rather abruptly. I could tell she was upset. "BECAUSE HE…" She started to yell, before sniffling a little, trying to stifle tears. "Because he got me out of there, Tamaki." The tears started falling down her cheeks. "You saw the apartment. What do you think the guy making that mess was capable of, huh?" As her voice began to raise again, I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her in close to me. I felt like this was something she'd really been wanting to say out loud, and she just hadn't known how to.
"Tamaki, I lied to you. I lied to all of you! When I broke my leg? I didn't trip. I… HE!…" Not being able to continue, she handed me back the phone.
"Yeah." Was all I could say to him. What else could I say to him?
He stayed silent for a good long while. "Kyoya… Is she serious…?" Haruhi grabbed and held my free hand tightly. I could feel myself beginning to tear up as well.
"Yeah…"
"Kyoya… I…" He paused. "When I said you didn't care about her… before her welcome back party… She was… with you? In your home?"
"She was."
"And she wasn't ready to tell anyone… which is why you were being so weird… And why you didn't tell me…"
"Correct."
"Kyoya, I'm so sorry."
"You couldn't have known."
"How… did you find out? If you don't mind my asking?" Haruhi signaled for me to hand her the phone.
She sniffed a little before speaking. "He saw that I wasn't feeling well one day, and he took me home. He happened to catch my dad…" She took another deep breath. "Throwing me down a flight of stairs."
"WHAT?"
She shut her eyes tightly, trying to keep her composure. "He helped me. He got me out of there. He gave me a place to live. Helped me adjust to the change. Helped me heal. He went back to the apartment and got all of my personal things while I slept. He replaced every article of clothing my dad ever bought me." She smiled a little. "He even watches bad movies with me when I'm sad."
"Very bad movies." I added, hoping it would make her laugh. It did.
"Come over, in the morning, Tamaki. Bring the twins, Mori and Hunny. I'll explain everything to everyone, when it's NOT the middle of the night." She looked up at me. "That's okay, right?"
"Of course, Love."
She clasped a hand over her mouth, clearly trying not to laugh. Oh, no. Did I just… I did.
I'd momentarily forgotten that Tamaki could hear everything I said, as well.
There was another long pause. "Haruhi, could you please hand Kyoya the phone for a moment?" He said, eerily calmly. She agreed, and handed me the phone, while silently mocking me by mouthing the words "You're in trouble." At least she didn't seem mad at me.
"LOVE?!" Ah, there was the Tamaki reaction I was more expecting. "DID YOU JUST CALL HER LO- …" He took a moment to compute the information he'd just received. "Are you DATING HARUHI?"
Haruhi was full-blown laughing at me at this point. The trauma just seemed to melt away as she got to watch me get yelled at by Tamaki. I could barely figure out how to form words. I didn't think the one to out our relationship would be me.
"YES." Haruhi yelled, before going back to giggling.
"… Yes." I repeated. I felt like an animal that had done something wrong. I REALLY thought Kaoru would be the one to let it slip.
I could hear Tamaki take the world's largest breath. "And you're treating her like a queen, correct?" I laughed.
"I'm treating her like the beautiful, intelligent, independent woman she is." Haruhi stopped laughing and just smiled. "By watching her terrible movies with her and getting her snacks." Haruhi laughed again.
"He knows the way to my heart." She said, directed at the phone.
"So, that rose necklace was from you, wasn't it?" He asked.
"Indeed it was."
"… It'd been that long and I didn't notice?"
"It's been months."
"Oh." He paused again. "So… She lives with you… and is your girlfriend?"
"That is correct, yes."
"KYOYA, YOU BETTER NOT BE-" Haruhi snatched the phone.
"We'll see you tomorrow, Senpai." She chimed, before hanging up the phone.
We stared at each other for a second.
"You do realize that you've one hundred percent confirmed to him that I do, in fact, have the pleasure of having sex with you, correct?"
She laughed. "Why let him wonder?"
I pulled her up onto my lap and hugged her. "I'm certain that isn't how you wanted to spend your 3:30 something AM." I told her as I let go to look at her.
"I mean. There are better ways to wake up. Though, it did feel kind of nice to tell him. I was planning on telling him that you also happened to be the love of my life in the morning, but I see you had other plans."
"It was a brief lapse in judgement."
"It means you get to kiss me in front of Tamaki."
"It was a completely sound moment of judgement."
She laughed and gave me a considerable kiss on the cheek. "I love when you get flustered. It's a real blue moon type of situation."
I stood up, picking her up with me. "Well, maybe you should get more sleep if we have to have a meeting tomorrow." I smirked before throwing her on the bed.
"Come on, then!" She said, lifting up my side of the blanket, inviting me into our bed.
I quickly joined her. "Can we read everyone else's messages in the morning over breakfast? I'm particularly interested in seeing how Mori-Senpai tried to warn me about Tamaki." She asked.
"Absolutely, Love." I told her. "Or… We could do it now."
"Get the phone, get the phone!" She smiled. "Let's take a bet, the longest message he sent to either of us has four words, max."
"I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say five words." I said, as I reached for my phone.
We spent the next hour reading through everyone's messages before we went back to sleep.
The bet was quickly won by Haruhi, with Mori's longest message reading, "Tamaki's at apartment."
