Chapter 36
June 8th 1992
Hogwarts
Harry stood in horror at the ghost of the man he had been dreaming about for years Tom Riddle or now known as Lord Voldermort.
He couldnt believe it.
Voldermorts memories were in his head.
As he struggled not to hyperventilate, Harry used his breathing techniques Master Dao had taught him to focus himself on what Riddle was saying.
"You see?" he whispered. "It was a name I was already using at Hogwarts, to my most
intimate friends only, of course. There was no way I was going to use my filthy Muggle father's name forever? I, in whose veins runs the blood of Salazar Slytherin himself, through my mother's side? I, keep the name of a foul, common Muggle, who abandoned me even
before I was born, just because he found out his wife was a witch? No, Harry — I
fashioned myself a new name, a name I knew wizards everywhere would one day fear to
speak, when I had become the greatest sorcerer in the world!"
Harry's stared numbly at Riddle, at the orphaned boy who had grown up to murder so many.
He started to think fast, weighing his chances. Riddle had his wand and he noticed that Riddle's outline was becoming clearer and more solid…
If he had to fight Riddle it was better sooner than later.
But how was he supposed to fight a spirit?
How could a spirit hold a wand?
Riddle then spoke.
"Now, Harry, Let's match the powers of Lord Voldemort, Heir of Salazar Slytherin, against Harry Potter the Head of House Slytherin"
Riddle then walked away and Harry watched Riddle stop between the high pillars and look up into the stone face of Slytherin, high above him in the half-darkness. Riddle opened his
mouth wide and hissed — but Harry understood what he was saying…
"Speak to me, Slytherin, greatest of the Hogwarts Four."
And Slytherin's gigantic stone face was moving. Horrorstruck, Harry saw his mouth opening,
wider and wider, to make a huge black hole.
And something was stirring inside the statue's mouth. Something was slithering up from
its depths.
Harry shut his eyes tight as he heard something huge hit the stone floor of the Chamber and he felt it shudder — he knew what was happening, he could sense it, could almost see the giant serpent uncoiling itself from Slytherin's mouth. Then he heard Riddle's hissing voice:
"Kill him."
The basilisk was moving toward Harry; he could hear its heavy body slithering heavily
across the dusty floor. Eyes still tightly shut, Harry began to run blindly sideways, his
hands outstretched, feeling his way and hearing Voldemort laughing.
He thought about what to do.
A main problem would be the serpent's eyes and how could he do anything when he had to keep his eyes closed to avoid being petrified.
Harry then had an idea.
Master Dao in his lessons had always stressed a Connection with the earth
Could he use the earth to feel what was going on around him and send off a sort of seismic wave.
It was worth a short.
Focusing on the ground Harry focused on really feeling the ground remembering what Dudleys friend Piers talked about with his father watching a show about Sonar.
And somehow his idea worked.
Harry could feel rough outlines of the Chamber in his mind including Riddle,Murdock and the Serpent.
He needed to somehow take out the Basilisks eyesight
Well he had been working on wandless magic for a while now so here he goes.
Harry raised his hands and shot out Piercing Curses at where he thought the Basilisks' eyes were.
He missed though and afte doging another tail swipe he tried again and this time was able to hit his mark.
The snake's tail thrashed around, narrowly missing Harry, and Harry peaked its eyes open ever so slightly and looked straight into its face and saw that its eyes, both its great, bulbous yellow eyes, had been punctured by Harrys spells and blood was streaming to the floor, and the snake was spitting in agony.
The blinded serpent swayed, confused but still deadly.
Now what to do though.
The snake's tail whipped across the floor again. Harry ducked and he threw himself flat onto the floor as the basilisk's tail swung over him again.
What would be the snake's blindspot?
It had to have a blindspot.
Harry knew that the Basilisks had some pretty tought skin but it had some weak points.
The eyes were obviously one.
He then saw the Basilisk's open mouth that he realized would give him an opening.
Remembering what he had done with Lockhart earlier he focused his chi waiting for the right moment.
He had to get this right or he was screwed.
The basilisk's head soon started to fall, its body coiling around, hitting pillars as it twisted to face him. He could see the vast, bloody eye sockets, see the mouth stretching wide, wide enough to swallow him whole, lined with fangs that where thin, glittering, and venomous/
It lunged blindly — Harry dodged and it hit the Chamber wall. It lunged again, and its
forked tongue lashed Harry's side.
The basilisk lunged again, and this time its aim was true
Focusing Harry released a burst of bent energy forcing it to combust and fly through the air where it
And what a blast it was.
The blast of energy exploded right inside the Basilisks Mouth as it was getting ready to strike Harry
The resulting explosion threw Harry back quite a distance as he hit the ground with a thud.
Struggling to get up Harry looked over at the mangled remains of the blown up Basilisk head and all the teeth that lay scattered around the Chamber.
He could hear echoing footsteps and then a dark shadow moved in front of him.
"Very impressive Harry"Riddle said "You are a very advanced wizard to be able to kill a beast so massive"Raising his wand "But i still have this and you can't hit me"He said/
Glancing around frantically Harry looked and found that he had landed near Riddle's Diary.
That was it.
That was how Riddle was here right now.
He had to destroy it.
But how.
Seeing the Basilisk teeth that lay scattered around Harry quickly summoned one to him
Riddle than seeing the danger raised the wand but not before Harry took the
basilisk fang and plunged it straight into the heart of the book.
There was a long, dreadful, piercing scream. Ink spurted out of the diary in torrents,
streaming over Harry's hands, flooding the floor. Riddle was writhing and twisting,
screaming and flailing and then —
He had gone. Harry's wand fell to the floor with a clatter and there was silence. Silence
except for the steady drip drip of ink still oozing from the diary. The basilisk venom had
burned a sizzling hole right through it.
Shaking all over, Harry pulled himself up. His head was spinning as though he'd just
traveled miles by Floo powder. Slowly, he gathered together his wand.
Then came a faint moan from the end of the Chamber. Layla was stirring. As Harry
hurried toward her, she sat up. Her bemused eyes traveled from the huge form of the
dead basilisk, over Harry, in his blood-soaked robes, then to the diary in his hand. She
drew a great, shuddering gasp and tears began to pour down her face.
" Hey It's alright," said Harry, holding up the diary, and showing her the fang hole,
"Riddle's finished. Look! Him and the basilisk. C'mon, let's get out of here —"
"I'm going to be expelled!" She wept as Harry helped her awkwardly to her feet.
Harry just urged her forward and they stepped over the motionless coils of the dead basilisk, through the echoing gloom, and back into the tunnel. Harry heard the stone doors close behind them with a soft hiss.
After a few minutes' progress up the dark tunnel, a distant sound of slowly shifting rock
reached Harry's ears.
"Daphne!" Harry yelled, speeding up. "We're okay! I've got Murdock!"
He heard Daphne give a strangled cheer, and they turned the next bend to see her eager
face staring through the sizable gap she had managed to make in the rock fall.
"Harry!" Daphne thrust an arm through the gap in the rock to pull him through first before they worked together to help Layla through. "You're alive! I don't believe it! What happened?
"I'll explain when we get out of here," said Harry with a sideways glance at Layla, who
was now crying harder than ever. "Where's Lockhart?"
"Back there," said Daphne, still looking puzzled but jerking her head up the tunnel toward
the pipe. "He's in a bad way. Come and see."
They walked all the way back to the mouth of the pipe. Gilderoy Lockhart was sitting
there, humming placidly to himself.
"His memory's gone," said Daphne. "The Combination of the Memory Charm and what you did damaged his brain and he hasn't got a clue who he is, or where he is, or who we are. I told him to come and wait here. He's a danger to himself."
Lockhart peered good-naturedly up at them all.
"Hello," he said. "Odd sort of place, this, isn't it? Do you live here?"
"No," said Daphne, raising her eyebrows at Harry.
Harry bent down and looked up the long, dark pipe.
"Now how are we going to get back up this?" he said to Daphne.
"If this chamber were built by Salazar Slytherin"She said "He would not have just relied on the slide to get in and out, maybe he made other ways to get out".
"Wonderful idea"Harry said and then hissed "Stairs"
They then watched as thankfully a pair of stairs appeared.
"That would have been nice getting down here"Harry murmured.
He then directed Lockhart up the stairs as Daphne helped a sobbing Layla up.
Soon they were at the top and emerged in Moaning Myrtle's Bathroom
Once they got up they saw the sinks that hid the pipe and stairs sliding back into place.
Myrtle goggled at them.
"You're alive," she said blankly to Harry.
"There's no need to sound so disappointed," he said grimly, wiping flecks of blood off his glasses.
"Oh, well… I'd just been thinking… if you had died, you'd have been welcome to share
my toilet," said Myrtle, blushing silver.
"Urgh!" said Daphne as they left the bathroom for the dark, deserted corridor outside.
"Where now?" said Daphne, with a look at Layla.
"Professor Snapes"He suggested as that seemed like the best bet.
Daphne agreed and soon they were strolling towards Professor Snapes office.
When they got there they knocked and pushed the door open.
For a moment there was silence as Harry, Daphne,Layla and Lockhart stood in the
doorway, covered in muck and slime and in Harry's case blood. Then there was a
Scream.
"Sweetheart"
Someone jumped up who must be Mrs Murdock who had been sitting crying and she leapt to her feet, closely followed by who must be , and both of them flung themselves on their daughter.
Harry and Daphne, however, were looking past them. Professor Dumbledore,Snape and McGonogal were sitting down
Mrs Murdock then gave them both a hug.
"You saved her! You saved her! How did you do it?"
"I think we'd all like to know that," said Professor McGonagall.
Harry hesitated for a moment before he started telling them everything.
He told them about how Daphne had come to find the diary in the bathroom and that she had given it to him and how the diary then had sucked them into the memories of Tom Riddle where they had learned about the last time the Chamber had been opened and how Myrtle Warren was killed by the Basilisk and how it was just a lucky guess that they thought the entrance to the Chamber was somewhere in Moaning Myrtle's Bathroom.
Professor McGonogal then took the lead on the questioning.
"Very well," Professor McGonagall prompted him as he paused, "so you found out
where the entrance was — breaking a hundred school rules into pieces along the way, I
might add — but how on earth did you all get in and out of there alive, Potter?"
Harry thought about what he wanted to say.
He did not want to reveal his Parseltoung,Bending or considering Layla was in the Room he didint want to say anything that would get her expelled.
After all, Riddle's diary didn't work anymore… How could they prove it had been Riddle who'd made her do the acts of this year?
"When we got there the entrance was already opened and we went down a slide of sorts to get to the Chamber"Harry said "Lockhart tried casting a spell but his wand malfunctioned and blew up on him and he has some things wrong with him now"Pointing to the daydreaming Lockhart.
"Miss Murdock and Professor Lockhart should go up to the hospital wing right away," Dumbledore interrupted in a firm voice. "This has been a terrible ordeal for Mrs Murdock and Gilderoy needs to be looked at" He strode over to the door and opened it. looking at the Murdock family "Bed rest and perhaps a large, steaming mug of hot chocolate. I always find that cheers me up," he added, twinkling kindly down at Layla "You will find that Madam Pomfrey is still awake. She's just giving out Mandrake juice — I daresay the basilisk's victims will be waking up any moment and I will update you later."
Layla was led out by her parents, all looking deeply shaken.
"You know, Minerva," Professor Dumbledore said thoughtfully to Professor McGonagall,
"I think all this merits a good feast. Might I ask you to take Gilderoy to the Infirmary with the Murdocks and then go and alert the kitchens?"
"Right," said Professor McGonagall crisply, also moving to the door with Lockhart in tow "I'll leave you and Severus to deal with Potter and Greengrass, shall I?"
"Certainly," said Dumbledore and motioned for Harry and Daphne to sit.
"You said you had found a Diary belonging to Tom Riddle"He asked.
Harry nodded "It was this diary," he said quickly, showing it to Dumbledore "Riddle used it to possess Layla; she didint know what she was doing".
Dumbledore took the diary from Harry and peered keenly down his long, crooked nose
at its burnt and soggy pages.
"Brilliant," he said softly. "Well I must congratulate you all for making it out of all of this safely".
"You may go back to your Common Room to rest"Dumbledore said "Severus may you take them there and then check up on the status of Gilderoy. I fear I must draft an advertisement for the Daily Prophet, " he added Thoughtfully. "We'll be needing a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher… Dear me, we do seem to run through them, don't we?"
Harry,Daphne and Professor Snape got up and crossed to the door.
When they got into the hallway Daphne turned to Professor Snape.
"Will Layla be punished?"She said.
"No"Professor Snape said "I do not think that you two or Mrs Murdock will face any repercussions from what has happened today since I think now that the headmaster is now more interested in that book you gave him than anything else".
"Will we be mentioned in what has happened today?"Harry asked.
"I'm pretty sure Albus would be just fine in doing that"Snape said before they got to the Common Room.
"Have a good night and try not to die again"Snape said before walking away.
Harry and Daphne looked at each other before walking into the Common Room.
SCNE CHANGE
Harry had been to several Hogwarts feasts, but never one quite like this. Everybody was
in their pajamas, and the celebration lasted all night.
After having contacted Harry once more Dumbledore had announced that he working alongside the staff had entered the Chamber of Secrets rescuing Layla Murdock and eliminating the threat to the school.
Harry was a bit bemused by Dumbledore taking credit but it fit Harry since he was trying to stay low profile.
Layla had spread amongst the Slytherins that Harry and Daphne had a role in rescuing her.
That had increased his support amongst Slytherins he had realized.
He could unite Slytherin House.
Riddle's words did echo in his ears.
But he didint want to be like Riddle or otherwise now known as Voldermort.
That was something for the future though.
It was nice when on one of the last days of school Professor McGonagall had stood up to tell them all that the exams had been canceled as a school treat and Dumbledore had announced that, unfortunately, Professor Lockhart would be unable to return next year, owing to the fact that he needed to go away and get his memory back.
Quite a few of the teachers joined in the cheering that greeted this news.
Harry felt a bit guilty though.
Lockhart was horrible but Harry had never thought that their combined magic and bending would cause Lockhart to have memory issues.
It was fitting though.
The rest of the final term passed in a haze of blazing sunshine. Hogwarts was back to
normal quickly with only a few, small differences the major one being Defense Against the Dark Arts classes were canceled and too soon, it was time for the journey home on the Hogwarts Express.
As Harry gathered with Daphne,Edmund,Layla, and some other Slytherins and Ravenclaws he reflected on the year.
What a year it had been.
Hopefully next year would be a bit more peaceful.
