"You know fighting with Amber is not going to get you anywhere?" Diego mentioned as he tried to pick the door open to their dad's company.
Five sighed and rubbed the back of his head. He really hated the state he and Amber were in. It's not like it wasn't warranted since he knew this was a massive temporal gamble. Amber was just as knowledgeable as he was on time continuums as he was. However, they needed a way out and the only way at the moment he saw was speaking to his father.
"Yeah, well he knows about time travel and maybe he can help in getting us all home and out of here. If we all leave, maybe the end won't happen. Us being here screws up the timeline and we already have in some aspects; but Amber wants a life here. Makes no sense."
Diego scoffed.
"I think it's less her wanting a life here and more of her just wanting a peaceful life with you. She's been through a lot . Can you really blame her for wanting to settle down? Despite her spunk, I forget she's supposed to be almost 60 so it can wear on her old soul. Doesn't doing all this wear you down Five?"
Five ran his fingers through his head and sighed. It kind of did and he honestly didn't want to do this again. He had no choice though and he felt responsible for what will happen unless they find a way to stop it or get out. His heart felt tight as he remembered the future where he saw Amber giving up her life in vain for his family and the world. A stray tear fell and Diego noticed.
"It killed you didn't it…. seeing Amber's final moments?"
"Of course it killed me Diego. In my vows I swore to protect her and I hadn't made it in time for that future to do so. It made me feel like shit that she gave up hope and that she died in front of me. Always wanted us to grow old together and hopefully die together in our sleep. This is more than just me wanting to save the world…it's to protect my family and save my wife this time. I know what I am doing is a temporal risk but it's just so I don't have to see my wife die in front of me again. When you have a wife that you care so much for, you'll understand Diego why I'm so stubborn about wanting to do things my way."
Diego stopped picking the lock and looked at his brother. In all their years of being siblings, this was one of the only times Five looked very vulnerable. Amber truly was a loving partner to him but Diego also knew that Amber was slightly different now. She needed to move on in her short months but she still loved his brother dearly. Diego also knows that Amber was a romantic and maybe Five didn't bear his soul like he did to him.
"Did you tell all this to Amber?"
"More or less. Look Diego, I have a plan and we need to go along with it so she doesn't die and the world doesn't end."
Diego shook his head.
"See there you go again being such an entitled and 'all knowing' asshole. Amber is smart too you know and she's not that 15-year-old you met. She's a grown woman…probably even slightly older than you now so do respect what she has to say to you."
Five scoffed.
"You don't think I know that, Diego. I know all of that…I guess I also don't want to admit I failed her and I'm trying to make amends but she won't listen to me…."
"Like you haven't been with her? Look I get and understand all you told me, but it's not just you okay. It might have been that way since it's been we for you both, but it's you and her. You need to be a man Five and have a talk with her."
He hated that Diego was making some sort of sense. Five hated that he was at odds with his wife and he needed to apologize. Amber might have plans or maybe she's just as scared of losing him as he was losing her. He fixed up his tie as Diego resumed lockpicking the door with his knife. This was a waste since he could blip in on the other side and open the door. However, he could humor his brother a bit more. Diego glanced a bit at the building before looking at Five, realizing this was a big moment for him.
"How long has it been for you?" Diego asked.
Five sighed, rubbing the back of his head nervously.
"45 years."
"That's a trip." Diego commented.
Five nodded but sighed once more. He thought he knew better back then, but his father was right like always.
"You know, sometimes I would hear him in my head while in the apocalypse. He would even bother me in my sleep with the same few words."
"Which were?" Diego asked.
Five scoffed sadly and uttered the words that haunted him,
"I told you so."
Diego cracked a slight smile and mentioned,
"Well dad hasn't met you yet so he can't tell you that."
Five rolled his eyes and stated,
"I'm sure he will find a way."
They had wasted enough time, Five thought and he blipped on the other side of the door to open it for his brother. Diego sheepishly smiled since he honestly forgets just how useful Five's powers were for getting in places.
"I should have remembered that."
Five chuckled as Diego walked into the building. He looked to see if maybe Amber had followed them but sighed when she wasn't around. Both he and Diego looked around the main lobby of the company and he knew this had to be a front. They split up to see if they could find their father or anything that would help them in their plans to get out of the 60s. After looking in several rooms, Five entered what appeared to be his father's office. He glanced at the table and saw a small stack of mail left on it. Five was astounded that his father would leave anything on his desk and looked at what was left behind. Most of it was either junk or utilities until he found an invitation. It was a special invitation for a Mexican consulate for Monday, November 8, 1963. This made Five grin since he had an opportunity to see what his father was up to and perhaps can get a word with him. He slipped the invitation in his breast pocket and was about to leave when he heard something rustling in the room.
Slowly, he approached the part of the room where the sounds were coming from and a shocked look came on his face. It was Pogo, but Five knew he was pretty much a baby now. He was speaking like any old chimp would and he looked very scared to see him. Five cracked a small smile and bent down to see Pogo at eye level to calm him.
"Hey Pogo…. It's so great to see you. I've missed you." Five told him.
Pogo screeched at him and swung at Five's face with his sharp nails. Pogo continued to screech as he ran away from Five and jumped out a glass window. Five cursed as he felt his cheek bleeding and in pain. They were both in trouble and needed to leave.
"Diego!" Five yelled as he clutched his face.
He ran in the building to try to find him only to hear a voice say,
"Looks like coming here was a bad move mon coeur."
Five seemed shocked and he looked behind him to see Amber. She walked up close to him and noticed the scratch mark on his face.
"What the hell happened to you?" she asked.
Five chuckled sadly.
"Pogo…he scratched me…I don't blame him since he hasn't met me yet. Plus, he's more of an animal at the moment so I can understand why he did it."
Amber didn't feel the need to gloat or tell him off, she just felt his pain and sighed, looking at the wound. It was a mendable wound and she will take care of him when they got back to Elliot's.
"You can't go anywhere with me without getting in a scuffle, can you?" she asked with softness in her voice.
Five's expression softened and chuckled a bit despite the pain.
"Yeah, well you get turned on somewhat from me being covered in blood. If we recall the Switzerland job in 86, I was drenched and you got so horny over that. We ended up having sex as I washed the blood off me…rather you got me clean while we both got dirty."
Amber blushed since that was both fucked up yet true. That had to be chalked up to the surgeries Commission did to her since normally that would be sick and twisted to be aroused by bloodshed. She did however miss their acts of love and maybe that was a reason they were frustrated at each other; perhaps it was part sexual frustration.
"We can reminisce and talk about what you found when we are out of here. Now where's Diego?"
"We split up." Five explained.
"Ah the divide and conquer strategy. Smart in a place like this but kind of bad if Reggie is in his prime. We better find him." Amber told him.
Five nodded and it didn't take them long to find him in the warehouse part of the company with Lila. However, Diego was on the floor and Amber could see a lot of blood on the floor.
"Shit Diego's hurt." Amber said as she ran to him.
Lila raised an eyebrow and asked,
"You don't have a side thing with him do you?"
Amber rolled her eyes.
"No god no, he's my brother. Now stop the bleeding before you get him to Elliot's."
Lila chuckled and rolled her eyes back at her.
"No shit really? And here I thought I needed to let him bleed this out. I will take care of Diego, just focus on the boy-wonder there." Lila sarcastically remarked.
Such an attitude Amber thought but she reluctantly agreed and went to Five. He blipped them back to Elliot's and Amber worked on Five. She got some gauze and alcohol to stop the bleeding. Five hissed at the feeling of the medical alcohol entering his open wound but he calmed down soon after. Amber took such good care of him and Five loved that about her.
"So, I'm guessing you didn't find Reggie yourself?"
"I think Diego got to him first and…. well, we saw the outcome of that interaction. Don't think he even got a word out of him on time travel. Should have seen that coming."
Amber just nodded and sighed. He was holding on to Amber's hand who was holding on to the gauze and there was heat in their stare. They wanted each other, but they knew they shouldn't get into the habit of sexual releases after arguments. Plus, Amber didn't want their first act of sexual love to be make up sex; she valued them too much for that.
"You guys got lucky. Maybe you should take it as a sign and stop searching for Reggie. We can find other ways to go back Five or to stop the end without him. " Amber suggested
And they were back to this. Five knew it was reckless to do but the other option was just as bad and worse. He didn't want to cause Amber any pain or stress, but both his ideas would cause them. This one at least made his existence safer.
"I cannot Amber. My father knows something about timelines and time travel. He knew about the end of the world before and he must know something now. We need his help to figure out how to stop this doomsday or leave this place." Five said.
Amber got agitated since they were back at this again.
"Are you seriously this stubborn Five? Finding your dad in this timeline can lead to a shit ton of problems, especially if you get to see him. Do you realize what you are suggesting?" Amber raised her voice.
"Amber, he may be the key to stopping this and getting us the answers we need. I am well aware of the timeline and what consequences they have. It doesn't change the fact we need answers as we don't know what causes this apocalypse." Five said.
So, he was aware she thought…good so he wasn't an oblivious moron. Least maybe she can reason with him somewhat but he was stubborn as was she.
"Are you prepared to face the consequences of what you're attempting because it sounds like you want to go bullhead into this and you are willing to ignore the fact it can fuck up the timeline?" Amber said.
Five sighed.
"I'm not ignoring them completely; I just want an outcome where I don't see you dying again. If that means seeing my father and maybe causing a paradox, it's a chance I will take for you."
Amber did feel a bit touched but also sighed.
"Time is very cruel. There may have been a time I thought to track down Maude for what she did…but that will just cause a lot of hell and problems too. I really just wanted to be listened to and not argue like this." Amber stressed.
Five nodded. It did occur that Amber was furious at Maude but she had a level head not to alter time by confronting her.
"Please let me see this through Amber. We don't have any options now. Besides, I know where he will be next."
Amber raised an eyebrow but Five soon got out the invitation from his breast pocket. She read the invite and seemed a bit intrigued at the occasion itself. Five grinned slightly and wrapped his arms around her.
"It doesn't have to be all recon ma cherie, we can have some time to ourselves before we find my father." He whispered softly.
Amber did feel a pleasant shiver at the thought, but the fact it couldn't be all pleasure bothered her. Even the smallest interactions can make a difference. He has told her countless times that no one is insignificant and he is aware that meeting Reggie now is a bad idea on temporal levels.
"Five…."
"Please let's not argue anymore. I want this to be like they were." He murmured.
"Yet the way things were means I follow blindly and I can't anymore. Things can't never fully be like they were. I'll think about the consulate, alright?"
Amber shifted her face to kiss Five's lips. They weren't mad, but neither of them were completely happy at the current moment. Amber pulled away as she heard a car pull up. Diego and Lila, she thought. They heard them come inside and Diego screaming. Five sighed and both he and Amber went to check up on him. Lila was stitching up Diego's wound and Five looked a bit amused.
"Oh, look he's not dead." Five remarked.
Amber rolled her eyes and playfully slapped the back of his head. Five winced a bit and rubbed the back of his head, causing Diego to chuckle at him.
"Not nice to speak to your brother like that. Oh, by the way, how's the gorilla man if we are talking brothers?" Amber asked.
"Resistant like you to save the world but for different reasons. He will come around…eventually." Five stated.
The fact she and Luther had a similar thought horrified her. Five grinned at Amber's horrified expression and embraced her.
"Don't be that way Amber."
"You compared me to that gorilla brained asshole, oh am I supposed to react to that?"
Diego chuckled despite his pain and looked at the young at heart couple.
"Is all well?"
"Not fully, but we're getting there…. yes?" Five asked.
Amber sighed.
"This should be your hint to back down but the other plan I have will take time and risk psychosis." Amber expressed.
Five knew what she meant and was right on how dangerous that plan was. Lila looked to Amber and said,
"You sound cute when you try to sound smart."
"And you look cute trying to play nurse. Your stitches look like shit by the way and I hope Diego can heal properly with those." Amber commented.
Lila chuckled since Amber sounded like her husband and she hadn't known the couple long. Diego hissed in pain when Lila did another stitch and Five rolled his eyes.
"Let me take you back to Joanna's since you want more time to think, don't you?" he asked.
Amber seemed a bit shocked at Five's growth and asked,
"You don't want me to stay with you?"
"A lady needs her rest and I don't think Lila and Diego are going to give up Elliot's bed for us anyway. We will figure things out and you need to decide if you're coming with me to the consulate."
Diego seemed impressed Five was letting Amber choose what to do and his talk seemed to make things clear to Five. Amber cracked a slight smile and kissed his cheek.
"I can't fully promise yet that I will come…really need to think about our moves. Meeting Reggie is probably one of the worst moves we can do but he should know about time. After all, he's the one who brought me to you with his knowledge of time. I hate this move, but I still need to think if I am coming."
Five nodded and he blipped Amber to Joanna's house. He didn't want to leave again but he needed to. Amber needed some space and time; he would need to respect that.
"I do hope you come. It would be bad enough that I am doing something drastic…but I would at least want company."
Amber sighed.
"I heard you, but again…I need to know I am at least being heard…am I?"
Five sighed and stroked her cheek.
"You are and I wish we didn't need to find my old man. But I don't trust myself to make a temporal jump forward again with anyone. We got lucky we all ended up in Texas in just a span of a few years. If I did it again without knowing my father knows…it could be much worse. I don't want us to be apart again in time."
Despite the freedom, sense of self, and her dear friend, she did miss having Five by her side as her husband.
"I love you Five, really I do. Just let me sleep on this."
Five nodded and kissed her.
"Hope to see you soon ma cherie."
With that, he blipped back to Elliot's, leaving Amber alone. Joanna opened the door and let Amber inside.
"Long night?" she asked.
Amber just nodded and went off to bed, not knowing how her future with Five will be going forward. They weren't arguing but it felt more like an impasse. What was a woman like Amber to do when the clock was ticking once again? One thing was for certain, this whole situation fucking sucks.
