Sorry for the long wait on this chapter. I have been having family problems and am still in school, so thank you all for your patience. Thank you again for all the reviews; I really enjoy reading them. One thing at the end of chapter three: I explained that I changed the ages for both Percy and Jason when they started. I have Jason starting at Camp Jupiter not counting the Wolf House at age 6 and Percy going to Camp Half-Blood at age 10. I also explained some other things I have changed for this story like the use of modern weapons and how Percy can shoot a gun just not a bow because those are two completely different things. Here is a lighter chapter and after this we will be having more action. I hope you enjoy!
Percy was glad about not having to wear the gray prison clothes anymore, and it was even better that he had pockets! Percy fingered Riptide, feeling more at ease with his situation now that it was in his hand - especially after yet another sleepless night full of demigod nightmares. He had a bad feeling something was going to happen soon if his dream was any indication.
"Hydra" he mouthed silently to himself. He had heard that name before; he wasn't talking about the monster he had fought on more than one occasion but about a group calling itself HYDRA. Percy was beating himself up trying to remember where he had heard of a group using the name of that annoying monster and why it was so important.
At breakfast he was in his own world still trying to remember and trying to get his thoughts in order. Jason was giving him some worried looks. Percy wanted to ask Jason if he remembered the name HYDRA, but couldn't do that in front of a group of superheroes who would probably ask him a bunch of questions about this HYDRA and why he was thinking of the name now, and he didn't need them thinking he was crazy by him saying it came to him in a dream. Plus, he had no desire to explain what demigod dreams were like.
"Percy?" Percy's head snapped up
"Yes?" he asked, seeing the whole table staring at him with a mix of worried expressions.
"Are you alright?" Scott asked.
"Yeah why do you ask?" Percy said in a forced chipper tone that made him grimace. He hoped no one noticed.
"We have been calling your name and you were zoning out." Tony replied, absently pointing his fork at Percy as he gestured with his hands.
"Percy, did you have a nightmare last night?" Bucky inquired.
"No," Percy rushed to respond. Jason side-eyed his friend, noticing that Percy didn't seem focused or in control at all.
"It is okay to have a nightmare. If you want to talk about it, we are all here for you." Sam stated, giving Percy an encouraging smile that made him feel even worse. He didn't want to talk about his feelings with near strangers; he didn't even like talking about his feelings with his friends.
"Thanks for the offer, but no thanks. I just didn't sleep well last night. I bet I'll feel better after a swim." Percy muttered, not bothering to conceal his irritated tone.
"Well, I guess that is good news because I made plans for everyone." Tony said unusually perky for this time in the morning.
"Tony, we talked about this. I don't think-" Steve tried to say but was cut off by the billionaire.
"It will be fun and everyone needs to get out of the compound for a while, so boys, grab a swimsuit and an extra pair of clothes, we are going on a trip." Tony announced.
"A trip?" Jason questioned, thinking of all of the security that had surrounded them the other day.
"Umm, is this really a good idea, leaving the compound?" Bruce asked. He also had evidently not been told Tony's plans for today before this moment.
"Don't worry Brucey, this will be fun and you will enjoy it." Tony encouraged.
"Aren't we still you're prisoners? Is going on a… trip even allowed?" Jason asked.
"Don't be such a stick in the mud, you are a teenager and I think we should give you a little taste of what teenagers do." Tony sighed, not liking how no one else seemed excited.
"Stick in the mud?" Jason asked as if he didn't understand the phrase.
"Tony." Steve pressed.
"Go, go! Everyone gets your bathing suits and meet me in the common room in 15 mins. I have everything planned out and paid for so none of you can back out. Also, since Percy and Jason are prisoner's you guys don't have a choice in the matter." Tony said a little too happily and ran off down the hall.
"Can he even do that?" Percy asked, watching the retreating figure of Tony Stark, wondering if he would start skipping down the hallway like the 6-year-old he was playing the role of this morning.
"Yeah, I guess he can." Scott said. Steve sighed.
"I will take Percy and Jason back to their rooms." Rhodey stated, getting up from his chair Jason and Percy moved to join him.
"Do you know where Tony is taking us?" Jason asked.
"Nope, not a clue." was Rhodey's response, completely at ease with Tony's antics because he was used to them by now.
After meeting in the common room, the Avengers walked the two teens to the hanger where two SHIELD agents and Fury were already waiting.
"Wait, we're flying to this mysterious place?" Percy asked, grimacing.
"Yes, we won't be in the air very long but it's a 2 hour drive." Tony said wanting to get to whatever this place is as fast as posable.
"I'd rather drive." Percy mumbled.
"Percy, are you afraid of flying?" Sam asked, watching Percy with concern.
"Flying no, in planes, yes." Percy said, shooting a glance at Jason.
"Percy, I am sure it will be fine. I don't think you will get shot down." Jason said trying to reassure his friend; he didn't think his father would shoot them down when he was on the jet too and he didn't shoot Percy down when he was in the helicarrier. The Avengers and two SHIELD agents were looking back and forth between the two teens, trying to figure out what they were talking about.
"Easy for you to say." Percy grumbled.
"You were fine when you were in the helicarrier." Bruce reminded him.
"I'm fine, I have just had bad experiences with aircraft." Percy sighed as he started to walk to the Quinjet.
"I know what you mean. It took me a while to get used to flying after being shot down a couple of times." Bucky stated as the group began to load up onto the jet.
"Hold on." Fury cut in before Percy or Jason could get on the jet. He held up two pairs of cuffs.
"Oh, come on." Percy sighed in exasperation.
"Are the cuffs necessary? We haven't done anything to warrant them in the several days we have been in your custody," Jason also protested, looking at the adults, his expression morphing into one of annoyance to match Percy's.
"Fury, I have to agree with them. I don't think the cuffs are necessary." Steve said sternly, attempting to convey in his expression that the constant reminder that they were prisoners was hurting their chances of gaining the teens' trust.
"They are still prisoners and a potential danger; this is just a precaution," the director explained. Rhodey and Bucky grabbed Percy and Jason's bags and gave the teens sympathetic looks as the two SHIELD agents took the cuffs from Fury and hesitantly approached the two teens, who sighed and put out their hands. The cuffs were uncomfortable. Percy moved his wrists around trying to make them more comfortable but it was useless. These were the same cuffs they used when they brought Jason and him to the compound, large alien-tech that were nearly indestructible. Percy thought they were a little overkill. Then they were marched to the aircraft where they were further restrained to their seats.
"Is this necessary? I mean we won't even be in the air for half an hour." Sam complained on behalf of the boys as the agents checked to make sure the restraints were secure before they sat on either side of the teens to guard them.
"It is a-"
"Precaution." Scott, Tony, and Percy chorused, finishing the sentence for Fury and rolling their eyes. Fury scowled and everyone settled into their seats as one of the SHIELD agents got into the pilot seat and started to warm up the Quinjet.
"I don't even know why you guys are coming along. I don't recall inviting you." Tony grumbled as if he had this conversation with the director before and already knew what the answer would be.
"I did not approve this trip, so my agents will be there just for security since you insist on going." Fury deadpanned.
"Where are we going? It seems everyone but Percy and I know." Jason asked.
"You will see when we get there."
"You're not staying, director?" Percy asked in a challenging tone. The entire plane tensed as he voiced the question, not understanding that Percy was trying to start pleasant conversation mostly to distract himself from being in an airplane but his anxiety was making that difficult and bringing the tone to his voice. The SHIELD Agents and Fury scowled at him.
"No, I will not be staying. Is there a reason you think I should?" he glared at Percy.
"Would you believe me if I said I would miss your company?" Percy shot back, not doing anything at all to save himself from the suspicious look in the director's eye.
Jason cleared his throat "I have never seen a plane like this. 5 jet turbine thrusters, nice." Jason blatantly changed the subject before the director decided to shoot his friend.
"How did you know that?" Sam asked. Jason just shrugged. He didn't know how to explain that he had the same feel for planes that Percy had for boats - he just had the knowledge waiting for him when he was in the air.. They had been in the air for a few minutes but it already seemed like a couple of hours all sitting in a confined space. Neither him nor Percy could move and he didn't know what to talk about. He just said the first thing that came to mind and he didn't have a backup plan.
"Jason is a pilot who can pretty much fly any aerial vehicle." Percy started saving Jason… sort of. Everyone's eyes widened at that statement, with the exception of Jason, who was glad the restraints prevented him from face-palming.
"How about you Percy, do you know how to fly?" Percy shook his head, making his restraints rattle.
"I prefer land and sea modes of transportation." He muttered.
"Jason, it is pretty impressive that you are a pilot at such a young age." Rhoedy praised, clearly impressed.
Jason tilted his head in slight confusion. "Umm thanks." He said, not really sure how to answer that, since technically he wasn't a pilot. He was like Percy being able to control ships and other sea vessels but he was able to do it with aircraft, and he only discovered that recently so he didn't know if it applied to all aircraft or not.
"We will be landing in 5 minutes" the pilot informed them.
Jason was glad that the conversation died as now everyone was getting ready to land He took a chance and whispered to Percy in Greek " είχες ένα όνειρο ημίθεου χθες το βράδυ;" {did you have a demigod dream last night?} Percy frowned and gave a small nod and mouthed 'we need to discuss it'. Jason found himself wondering when they would get the chance. They were never alone and if they had a long conversation in another language, their captors would become suspicious. He still wanted to discuss his dreams that he had been having but had only succeeded in telling Percy the basics through crude notes he managed to pass him when no one was paying attention. The longer that went on, the more he was sure the Avengers would catch on and they could be in trouble. He also was worried about what Percy's dream entailed, because this morning at breakfast Percy looked like he was trying to figure something out that was deeply concerning him or scared him or possibly both, and that concerned Jason a lot.
The next thing Jason knew was that the plane had landed and they were uncuffed from their seats and ushered off the jet. Walking into the bright sunlight they were taken aback when they realized they were in an amusement park.
"So, what do you guys think?" Tony asked happily, hoping for cheers of approval or gushes of praise from the two teens but when he didn't receive any of that he looked back at the pair. Percy looked uncomfortable and Jason looked confused.
"Aren't amusement parks supposed to have more people?" Jason asked.
"Usually yes, but I rented it out just for us." Tony explained, his excitement dying a little.
"Or is it so you can keep a better eye on us?" Jason asked again. This time the adults frowned as a slight hint of hostility entered Jason's usually polite tone.
"No it is actually easier so we don't have to wait in lines for rides and we aren't being swarmed by fans all the time."
"I thought you liked the attention?" Bucky asked, also not seeming pleased to be here.
"Have you guys ever been to an amusement park?" Scott asked, wanting to change the subject. Jason just shook his head
"I have, once. I was sent there to retrieve something when I was 10. It was an abandoned amusement park that I ended up blowing up after nearly dying." Percy muttered. Even though this amusement park seemed a lot nicer than Waterloo, it still looked abandoned with no other people around and that sent a cold chill up his spine. He started looking around for traps or monsters in hiding.
"What kind of mission sends you to an abandoned amusement Park?" Sam asked.
"And why would you blow up an amusement park?" Scott added.
"I didn't blow up the entire thing, just the one ride, but the amusement park was booby trapped so An - my partner and I accidently tripped some of the traps that ended in the ride blowing up and I can't really go into the whole reason I was there." Percy stated defensively. He winced when he realized that he had nearly said Annabeth's name.
Fury narrowed his eyes and made a mental note to tell Coulson to check into abandoned amusement parks that were partly blown up. Sam made a mental note to look into Percy's partner. If it had been Jason, he would have just said so. What names started with An? Andrew? Anthony? Anne?
"Well, I didn't bring you guys here to stare at the park." Tony said, bringing everyone's attention back to him "As you can see this amusement park is not abandoned and the workers are still here to run all the rides for us. You both need to be reminded that you are still kids and kids know how to have fun and that is why we are here, to have fun not to talk about missions or depressing stuff okay?" He added.
"Umm, okay so what do we do?" Jason asked. He had heard of amusement parks from Piper since she talked about going to a couple with her dad when she was younger, but he didn't know much about them outside of the stories she told.
"Man, both of you are hopeless!" Tony gave an exasperated noise.
"First they change, then they will find the ride we want to try first." Rhoedy suggested and the others nodded and all of them headed off to the locker room after Fury reminded them the Agents will be around for security.
Peter
Peter hated school. Okay, that was a lie. He liked school, he just didn't like the people or how some classes were too easy for him. It was Tuesday and already he wished it was Friday. He also wanted to spend some time on patrol, since last weekend he was with the Avengers and hanging out with Percy and Jason.
Percy and Jason. He might not have known them for very long, but he would consider them his friends and he hoped they were starting to see him in the same way. His mind kept drifting back to the two older teens, wondering what they had been through and how similar their situation with family and friends were to him. For some reason, Peter felt like he could open up to them, tell them his deepest feelings and secrets and they wouldn't judge him for it or change how they viewed him. That was something he hadn't felt since… well since Uncle Ben, and he never got the chance to tell his uncle about his powers before he was killed. But even Uncle Ben wouldn't fully understand the things that he does as spiderman like Percy and Jason would.
Peter sighed as he watched the teacher ramble on about complex physics equations, already bored because he had finished the homework in class and had far more complex equations in the conversations he had with Bruce and Tony. Peter glanced at the clock - only a couple of minutes before the lunch period then two more classes before he could head to the compound or go on patrol.
Peter's thoughts went back to Percy and Jason, wondering if they were stuck in their rooms like yesterday or if they were training with the Avengers. He frowned. Peter tried to imagine himself in their position, forced to be a weapon and now were prisoners of the Avengers. Just thinking about it gave him a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. He looked up to Percy and Jason; being able to put up with this and still be good people because he knew better than anyone that it is so easy after a hard life to turn bitter and hateful, it takes real strength to stay kind and use their power for good… or at these that is the feeling he got from Percy and Jason, that whatever organization they were involved with they still protected people. Maybe not in the best way, but in some ways SHIELD did the same thing. He sighed, trying to calm his mind which felt like it was going a mile a minute.
The bell finally rang and he jumped out of his seat following his class out of the room, placing his homework in the slot and silently slipped out of the door into the chaos of the high school halls.
"Hey Penis Parker!" a voice shouted. Peter groaned. He had thought he was being stealthy to get outside to eat his lunch in relative peace with his two and only friends at school. But it seems Flash has a sixth sense to know where he is. "Parker!" he shouted again as he bulldozed his way through the crowd towards him.
With another sigh Peter turned to face his fate "yes Flash?" he asked, keeping his voice even.
"What do you think you are doing?" he asked, glaring down at Peter.
"Umm, going to eat my lunch?" Peter stated, trying to act like he was incapable of defending himself like he had been before the spider bite.
After the daily run in with Flash he found Ned and slumped beside him
"Why do you let him do that to you? If you wanted to, you could put him in his place." Ned asked, having seen the aftermath of their daily encounter.
"You know why I can't, and even if I did then I would be no different than him and I don't want my identity to get out." Peter said impatiently. He has had to explain himself at least once a day to his best friend, or at least one of his friends that was still alive.
Peter never wanted to tell Ned he was Spiderman but he had found out by accident. Honestly having yet another friend that knows his secret terrified him. After he had lost Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy he didn't want anyone else to get close to him, but Ned somehow wormed his way into his heart. Then he met Tony and the rest of the Avengers - more people he was scared to lose.
"Peter?" Ned asked, snapping Peter out of his thoughts.
"Umm yeah sorry what were we talking about?" he asked.
"Are you okay? You seem kind of out of it… did something happen? You know, as your alter ego?" Ned asked, his voice dropping to a whisper.
"No, nothing like that, I was just thinking." Peter answered. Ned raised an eyebrow, not seeming to believe him. "It is just two new teens that are staying with the Avengers." Peter gave in.
"There are more teen heroes besides you?" Ned asked in surprise. Peter just nodded, not wanting to explain that they were actually prisoners, or really anything about them.
"That must be cool! Some more people with powers close to your age. Are you guys going to form your own superhero team? That would be so cool! You could call yourselves the teen titans… oh wait that name is kind of already taken… Wait, can you take the names of comic-book teams?"
"Ned I don't think we will be forming a team." Peter cut in to stop Ned's excited ramblings. He did agree with Ned, it would be cool to have a team with Percy and Jason, but he didn't think it would happen because, one they were prisoners and two, if they were released they would either go back to the organization they worked for or want to try for a normal life. Before Ned could respond and ask more questions about these other superhuman teens, the bell rang to return to class.
The rest of the day for Peter was a blur. He was just counting down the minutes until he could leave. And finally, that time came. He ran out of the school, wanting to avoid Flash and Ned's questions. He smiled when he saw Happy waiting for him. Happy gave a small smile when he thought Peter wasn't looking, which made the young hero's smile widen even more.
Back with the Avengers, a little earlier
It was good to see Percy and Jason smiling and laughing. Seeing them like this made them look like the teenagers they were. It took them a couple of hours to get into having fun. At first it looked like Percy was looking for traps or enemies in the workers, which saddened all of them. Jason looked confused and unsure what to do and he was constantly looking at the Agents hanging around, but finally they seemed to relax and start having fun. It was sad that they didn't seem to have fun and just be themselves much in this organization they were in, but seeing them having fun warmed Steve's heart because here they weren't soldiers. He even enjoyed Bucky getting into the fun and smiling which was still a rarity these days. Steve originally opposed Tony's plan to come to the park, but now he was glad Tony did this. Seeing everyone smiling was its own reward and with this he hoped that Percy and Jason would trust them a little more.
When they got back to the compound and the agents left, Percy turned to the Avengers with a smile "Thank you. I had almost forgotten how to have fun or what that would feel like." That thought hit Steve in the gut.
"You both are welcome. You've got to remember to be a kid every now and then." Sam said, returning the smile.
"Yeah someone told me that when I was younger, but I am just now remembering what that means," he said.
"Yeah that was fun." Jason said, smiling. The scar on his lip seemed to disappear with the bright smile.
"Well you two should get a shower, Peter should be here soon from school and we will have dinner shortly after that." Bruce said also feeling more relaxed than he had in a while. Both teens nodded and turned down the hall, surprised that they weren't escorted to their rooms. Not wanting to ruin the good mood, they didn't mention it and walked together down the hall.
Sadly the good mood vanished when they turned the corner and came up to their room and they saw someone they were not expecting to see in the compound.
"Nico." Jason gasped in Latin. The smaller boy gave a small wave as they approached.
"What are you doing here? What if you get caught!" Percy whispered urgently, worried for Nico's safety. He didn't want another of his friends to become the Avenger's captives.
"It is fine, I asked Leo to make something up so I am not detected by cameras and the Mist is helping too." He answered "Are both of you alright?"
"Yeah we're fine. Is there something wrong with camp?" Jason asked.
"We probably don't have a lot of time to talk before you guys are missed. So I will make this short." Nico explained what has been happening in camp since their disappearance and Chiron's concerns.
"So the gods are handling it?" Percy asked a little bitterly. "We haven't heard anything from them either, so what are they handling?"
"That's not entirely true, you remember I told you I had a dream? Well it was from my father." Jason quickly explained his dream.
"It is kind of hard to believe. Zeus being helpful but still not helpful." Percy muttered.
"So, Zeus doesn't want you guys to escape, that's why you haven't?" Nico asked. Jason gave a slight glance to Percy wondering if that was with what Percy was thinking or not. "What do the gods want you to do?" he asked.
"I don't know, but I am more than a little annoyed that they probably orchestrated our capture…" he sighed "but I also had a dream last night that showed me a group called HYDRA and I have heard the name before, but I can't seem to remember much about it. That is what I wanted to talk to you about this morning." Percy gave a brief summary of his dream. He talked about the voice on the other side of the screen that knew Percy and Jason were demigods and that they were with the Avengers, and how they were also worried about the Avengers finding out who they really were and wanted them dead.
"That doesn't sound good." Jason muttered.
"No, it doesn't and now that I am thinking about it, I have heard a name like that before. At first I thought it was just about an actual hydra, but I will look into it and see why it is currently not ringing any bells." Nico suggested.
"You do that, but please Nico be careful and if you can, don't go alone. I have a feeling that this group, whoever they are, is the reason the gods don't want us to escape and why the Avengers have taken some interest in us." Jason stated. Nico nodded and faded into the shadows
"We need to hurry and change before they come looking for us." Percy said, switching back to English and walking to his room. Jason watched him disappear before going into his own room.
Nico
Nico left the compound the same way he appeared in the shadows. When Nico first arrived, he had waited to see if he was detected, but the device that Leo had made for him didn't give any indication that he had been noticed, magically or otherwise. He walked around not finding anyone. He was concerned, thinking that he was somehow detected when he first scoped out the place and they moved Percy and Jason somewhere else. He tried to find out more about these Avengers. He spent at least two hours spying around until he heard the jet coming in and hid in the shadows. After seeing Percy and Jason walking down a hallway alone he was glad they were both alright and that they were alone, making it the perfect time to talk to them.
Nico made his way back to camp slowly, debating if he should do what Percy asked and look into HYDRA first or report back to camp. Jason did want him to have help, but Nico was still not really used to the idea of doing his spy missions with anyone else. He decided to stop by the Empire State Building to see if he could talk to the gods, but after finding out it was still locked down he made his way to camp to report to the war council.
