AN: Щасливого дня батька! I spent some time with my father, and well I got busy. Also please check out this fanfic from Juhra titled 'Priest of Hakurei' on the touhou-project site, it's very good.
The moon is the epitome for all my anger is what I tell myself, well to be more specific, it was the two certain individuals occupying it. And no I'm not talking about the Lunarians but those two who I considered to be my parents whom 'migrated' there. I don't know how my parents ended up there, I was sure that they were hiding somewhere here in Japan, I only found out when my kami told me of their whereabouts.
I don't know what to feel. At first it was nothing at all but as times passes, bit by bit my enmity towards them grew until it bloomed into the immense hatred that I still have today.
They were sending people to capture her, I speculated that they wanted my little sister or their daughter as they call her from their letters that they sent, a message for my little sister to come and live with them on the moon. If only they asked first in person instead of hiding like cowards, then they would've had a chance, and that chance is nonexistent because fuck them. With every attempt they did. I, of course respectfully declined by telling them to fuck off and killed all of the goons they sent with the help of my guardians, it continued for quite a while until something dire happened.
It all happened in the particularly stale month of January just two days after new years eve, they were waiting patiently until me and my little sister were left vulnerable without our guardians, this time I was overwhelmed to the point that I couldn't protect her from being taken away, and so they try to leave with their objective. My sister struggled to free herself from them whilst I was pursuing them, the kidnappers were fast but I was also fast on their heels. In an attempt to free herself, my little sister bit the ear of the one holding her while also releasing her magic, that resulted in her getting dropped off as her captor tried to put off the flames unfortunately for them, the busty long haired bitch got incinerated.
What happened next is a moment that has been burned into the retina of my eye, I couldn't even look away because my emotions clashed like rival tides, on one hand my sadness begged me to help her in a desperate attempt to save her but my anger clashed with it, telling me to fucking erase all of their existence on this earth yet I only stood like a deer in the headlights, all I could do is watch it unfold before me, deep down I knew from that empty look that stared right back at me that there was no way that I could bring her back, I knew she had already passed on. In a fit of rage I screamed to my kami to take over me, and after I did that, I blanked out falling into a blissful state.
A moments passes and I finally regained my consciousness and the bloody crimson had covered me entirely, it seemed that my kami had already killed them all in a flash, even though revenge is wrong as told by my guardians the feeling of killing those puppets that my parents sent, brings me rejuvenation. I shouldn't be like this, that's why I remind myself of what it would lead, it was also probably thanks to him that he calmed me down. Who knows what stupid things I would do if I was left alone with that boiling desire to kill them.
With a heavy heart that time, I carried Komachi on my arms and closed her eyes. Her passing was painful for me, there were no words that came out from my mouth, then rain fell upon as if to mock me yet I did not mind it, in fact, it helped me cool down a bit.
On that day and until today, that great sorrow that I kept hidden from anyone still remains.
I brush the tears away with my palm, why did I even think of her at all times? I'm supposed to forget about her so that I could move on with my life but how could I even do that? My life which is so full of shit that she was the only one that I could find refuge in from this shitty life. Even if I did not ask her to talk with me, her presence alone would soothe me or bring me some sort of comfort.
Fuck there's no point in wallowing in despair, I wonder why have I not committed suicide yet. Surely I would've thought about it but nothing really came into fruition. Huh, I guess there's something wrong with me for me to not do that considering how my life is up to this point.
"What are you sulking for?" I heard the voice whom I'm familiar with throughout my life, I turned around to see him.
"Nothing…" My stoic demeanor came back yet I still felt melancholic deep inside, I really don't like being seen in anguish, especially to him.
He looks at me for a second, staring directly to my eyes.
Two empty eyes meet and a staring contest ensues. The look we shared were the same but his eyes weren't like a dead fish. It took about a moment until I averted my eyes to the ground.
I set the fishing equipment back to where it belonged. Though my first experience on fishing was uneventful, I would like to do it again in the future.
He was still looking at me, I stared right back again and his face was unreadable as usual.
"I'm surprised that you were able to keep up with that parasite, still I am disappointed at how it came out to be," He said so suddenly. Did you just come here to tell me that? Though I expected for him to say something like that, I would've like to hear something different, I mean, there must be something you have to say other than that-, I mentally shook thought away and he continues.
"You took too long to figure out your plan, if you were a bit faster then I wouldn't have brought you here. Anyways, let's talk about your current situation over some tea." Not long after he said that, he turned his back in front of me and began walking away.
His straightforwardness made me dumbfounded, wait why am I even being dumbfounded? This is how he always is since the first time we met.
Well, at least I'm finally gonna know why the hell I'm here.
"What do you mean I'm a 'Arahitogami'?!"
The loud yell from a distraught Hikigaya Hachiman echoes throughout the chamber, confusion and anger was evident. The teacup he held in his was thankfully safe as he put it neatly on the table, clearly the idea of him becoming something like a god was not what he expected, thus resulting of the sudden outburst.
"I warned you already of the consequences when you use that. Or perhaps you might have forgotten about it?" The kami that he faces may not be the most likeable in person but there was a reason why he is who he is, dressed in a yukata and with a messy hair, eyes eerily similar to the one his talking, Yahata is his name.
Better known as 'Hachiman the Great Bodhisattva' in the modern era, many worshipped him as the God of archery and war, even being considered as the patron deity that protects Japan from foreign invasions, though for him the title given is just a mere front of who really is. It is no lie that the feats he achieved were indeed great, bringing his reputation as a kami a whole different meaning that made him one of the major kami, but the image that his followers gave him were quite different in contrast to real self.
'The Great Bodhisattva' image that he got, showcases his traits as someone that is strong, virtuous, glorious, and boastful. Majority of his people believed in that and so he just rolled with it. At first, he was a god of agriculture, farmers and fishermen pray for him for a bountiful harvest, he was like the kami Inari in that manner. It was when Buddhism arrived in Japan that he got that moniker during a war filled times.
Although majority of his followers were Buddhist, he as a deity is primarily a Shinto-centered god, it was only due to his connections with another god of war that is widely worshiped by Buddhist that he got dragged with in, but he did not complain, in fact he was delighted to have even more followers to him. For gods, the faith of their people is the sole reason or purpose of their own existence.
"This is actual bull! Just send me to the court of dead so I can get reincarnated or whatever." Hachiman is mad at him, and he has every right to do so, at least he thinks so. During his time living on one his temples where his guardians reside, he was given a choice to be a priest at the temple or become a member of the association, of course he chose the second as he does not have any desire to be in the clergy, it also signals his separation to the shrine-temple, his decision is also respected by his fellow guardians, and of course by his kami too.
"That would be pointless, I already changed your fate and even if you decide to kill yourself, the judge will just bring you here again." He said that as he poured some fresh tea on his cup.
"Even so. You can't just do that, you're abusing your authority!" It is true that what he did to him was clearly an abuse of authority, but it is not against the rules if it is one of his own people, so his claim came out as weak, and it also doesn't help that Hachiman knows that he can't really fight back against him.
"Then who's fault is it that someone decided to burrow my authority." Those words struck Hachiman
with displeasure, he cannot help but point out in his mind that his kami made a compelling rebuttal, if only he did not use said authority, then he would have been in the process of reincarnating, so he thought.
His frustration prompted him to click his tongue, Hachiman really does not like his current circumstances. Sure, being a Arahitogami is cool and all, the potential of breaking his own limits could surely benefit him seeing as he took down a threat that he thought was way out of his league but that comes with a major drawback.
To be able to maintain the status as a Arahitogami one must gather faith from others, and that of course leads to another responsibility, getting someone to have faith in him. But if one is unable to do just that then his existence as a Arahitogami will be gone, returning to being human again.
"Fine, but what's stopping me from turning back," with an annoyed tone, he said that.
"No one except yourself. Your body in its current state is keeping you alive from the sustained damage you receive, if you were to change back, you'll die and then ascend." The thought of being with this kami forever mortified Hachiman, he realized that remaining as he is now, is a better choice, for now that is.
He understood that his transition to being an Arahitogami saved him from dying but he was still annoyed.
"I could've easily dealt with him you know, but I don't want you to grow complacent towards me, I've already shared my power with you and besides, you don't really want me to intrude and kick you out of your body." His kami iterates before him.
"Yeah, I understand that your expectations of me is quite low."
"It's not like that at all, you are already at your limits with your weak constitution and its holding you back."
"So is that also the reason why you turned me part-god."
"Could be, anyways, I'll tell that drunk to resume your training back at the shrine."
"Your telling me to go back to the shrine and live there?"
"No, not yet. I've given you at least a year worth of faith, until then, you can live freely and finish high school if you want, also, wasn't your birthday this August?" Hachiman nodded to him and said,
"I didn't celebrate it if that's what you want to know."
"Figures," he stood up with his cup in his hands, "Okay, follow me. I have something to give you."
Hachiman is someone who does not want to be dragged around so casually- correction, he is someone who does not like to waste time, he would've like to be sent back right away to earth, but considering that he had no choice, or rather had no power to oppose his kami, all he could do was to suck it all up. He does not feel scared of the power his kami has, power that could easily erase an entire army in the battlefield, in fact he felt the need to oblige his kami's words, and the reason is quite personal.
His kami cares for him, although his kami doesn't show it by saying anything that could comfort him of his turbulent life, his kami was always there to support and help him. His kami gave too much without asking anything back to him, first he was skeptical of why his kami was doing this but after quite some time, he didn't find anything ulterior, so he decided to get rid of his skepticism.
They walked into another room, one filled with many shiny and shimmering goods, expensive diamonds and gold alike scattered in the left spot, an armory filled with a mix of different swords mainly katanas, and a single bow that is placed in the right corner spot, all of that belonged to his kami of course, his kami wouldn't be just a major deity in Shinto if he didn't have riches, well it was just common for major kami's like Yahata to be rich since they were well known.
"Here, take this." Yahata gave him a bag full of goods, though the bag was small, it was able to fit a dozen of gold bars. For people like Hachiman, he simply calls this fabric container as a magical pouch.
Hachiman nonchalantly takes the magical pouch offered to him, he thought that this was a gift for his birthday, it was too much that he could even ask for, and he didn't even ask for them! Would he return some of it back? 'Hell no,' he thought, for him it was free stuff that was already given and who wouldn't like free stuff, he triumphantly thought to himself.
"Use it as you will, but preferably, I would like you to buy a new sniper rifle."
"What's wrong with my current one, you know I could just get it fixed besides, it's right here-" Hachiman tried to grab unto his rifle that he thought was slinging over his shoulder, but air was the only thing he grasped.
"Even if you find that piece of junk under the debris from your recent engagement, I'd bet that it won't last a month at the rate your using it, hell, it'd be better to just use your spells." Hachiman hates to admit it that his kami was most likely right, he threw that gun away like a bag of trash, plus it was already damaged, so he considered what his kami says.
Out of the corner of his eyes he saw something that caught his interest, hidden within the armories, in the deepest corners on the right side, a lone crooked figure with a single string attached to it lay there eating up the dust. Hachiman knew that his kami is a god of archery and war, yet even though his kami is called a god of archery, never in his life has he seen his kami hold unto a bow, he was only taught spells by his kami other than the training his guardians gave him.
"Something caught your eye?" His kami inquired of him, seeing as his eyes piqued up in interest.
"That bow over there caught my attention." Hachiman immediately told him that with his eyes still glued on it.
"Why? You want to use that antique of a weapon?"
"No, I'm just curious why you haven't taught me how to use one considering who you are, after all."
His kami walks to the right corner where the bow was situated at, as he walked through the room, his kami's foot steps makes a worrying sound on the floor, it's creaks get more and more louder the further he steps in, Hachiman could tell that the room is meant to be a treasury or vault of sort but to see it not being maintained made him cringe a bit. His kami grabs a hold of the wooden bow, he tests the string as he plucked them and promptly returns to Hachiman's side.
"I haven't touched this thing since the mongols tried to invade Japan, well, considering that I ascended here after their failed invasion ended, anyways. This bow to be honest with you, is just a random one, it is nothing special, it can't shoot out magical lasers or shoot out multiple arrows, it doesn't even shoot that far only able to shoot out about a couple hundred meters, this is just an antique really." The kami turns the bow around as if to inspect it and continues his spiel.
"Though the combat capability of a bow is quite inefficient compared to today's era of long ranged weapons, guns specifically. Maintaining or creating it is quite an easy task to do in contrast to the complicated weaponry that you use. However times have change, and guns right now are the most used, and with it being a way better weapon overall in general. That's also partly the reason why I made you take up a gun rather than a bow. "His disciple continues to watch him handle the bow, he understood the point his kami was making, and so he meekly hums to his kami.
Hachiman looks at the reflective metal that was sprawled out on the ground, to be exact he was staring directly at his eyes and a question came up with it, "I also want to know why I have such good aim."
"You already know the answer to your own question but since you want to be affirmed by yours truly, I'll humour you," He walks away from his treasury and with his bow in hand, he strolled back to the room they previously occupied, Hachiman quietly followed his kami with the magical pouch.
On the way to the previous room, Hachiman recalled the memory of him holding his first ever rifle.
"C'mon kid, I know you can hit that shot, now try again." The kid tried again with a huff, sweating profusely from his numerous previous attempts which has all failed to hit the target. This time, he definitely had it, is what he thought. Yet again, he missed.
"Stop closing your other eye kid,"
"But it helps in focusing down my target."
"Are you not even using the enhancement spell that I taught you, seriously kid it's quite simple even a toddler can hit that shot."
"What kind of toddler is able to hit a thousand meter target?"
"Stop your chit-chat and do it again!" The kid grits his teeth and muttered curses under his breathes to the smelly old drunk.
With his never-wavering resilience, the kid took his position again. The rifle he held in his arms was a weapon that was used during the world wars, he didn't really have any concrete knowledge of said wars since he had not been told by anyone at all of what it is about, but he heard that the wars almost destroyed the earth. It was a scary thought, but for him it wasn't really scary. He had already experienced the worst thing that could ever happen to him.
His shallow breathing that desperately gasped for air slowed down and he maintained that pace as the beating heart of his roared but he could not hear it, adrenaline entered down his system and his thoughts were all focused to the target.
This time he didn't close his eye instead he narrowed both of them down, he felt relaxed, this time he was sure to hit it.
Thud
The mannequin fell to the ground.
The reminiscence clouded his mind but that came to an abrupt stop when he finally snapped out of it because someone tapped his shoulder, he realized that he just spaced out and now were inside the entrance to the room.
"You had that nostalgic look in your eyes, what gives?"
"Nothing, just remembering the past."
With the quick small talk stopping they entered the room, both of them took their respective seats.
His kami began to start his answer to him, "Despite your eyes looking like a dead fish, it has a unique trait, as in your eyes are special just like mine is, yet it is useless when not properly used I tell you, that's why I sent you to a firing range at an early age to fix that." That would explain his excellent marksmanship apart from his training, it was probably a byproduct of the so called 'genetics' that was passed down through his family, as he gave more thought to it from what he got from his kami.
Hachiman looked at his kami's eyes, they were pitch black almost lifeless as he stared down at the cup of his. He couldn't tell any difference other than the shape if he were to compare it to his own, the saying 'If you stare into the abyss long enough the abyss stares back at you', is applicable for his kami's eyes he thought. Although it isn't endearing, it can draw some attention if others were to see him.
"Hachiman, what do you think happens when you die?"
"I think I would've been to the judge's court where I will be given a sentence for my war crimes." Hachiman said sardonically out of spite to his circumstances that he faces right now, one could tell that he really doesn't like being part god, his kami just stared blankly at him.
"Well to be exact, after your life flashes before your very eyes, white light will consume your vision and after that you will be picked up by a shinigami which will lead you to the court of the dead and then there, they will decide your fate."
"That is what would most likely happen if I didn't turn into an Arahitogami but I should be thankful I guess, for what you did."
"So as you should be, because if it did not happen, then you would be stuck in here with me and I know you wouldn't desire a fate like this." As he said that, Hachiman formed a strained smile in mild frustration.
The conversation went silent for a bit as they sipped on their tea. Hachiman liked the tea, Chinese tea were always good if done right, especially green tea which is his favorite type out of all of it.
"Is the tea of your liking?" His kami coolly stated as he quietly sipped his tea with his eyes closed.
"Yeah, I do like the tea." Apart from being a coffee fanatic, especially the sweet kind. Hachiman had developed a liking to tea when he was just young, and the factor that helped in his development would be thanks to his drunk guardian who brews really good tea, he enjoyed his drunk guardian's tea and he could proudly say that he was once tea fanatic, until he tried coffee and got addicted to it.
"There's something that needs to be addressed and it's quite important." Hachiman raises is brows at his kami, he placed his cup on the table.
"What is it?"
"You know that request you've told me years ago." Hachiman ponders for a moment on what could his kami mean by 'request'. He had not really remembered anything of that sort or maybe he forgot about it since it was years ago.
"I'm not sure if I ever made a request to you, if it's a couple of years ago then I might've forgotten." It is not like Hachiman is a forgetful person, he just only remembers the things that are only important to his job, so to him, he thought that what he 'requested' back then was something trivial.
"Well, I don't know if it helps but it was a request you made before you went to middle school, a request regarding about your little sister."
Hachiman stopped his usual gaze as the air of the room turned serious. The mention of his little sister brought his attention to a hundred, he fully remembered what he said back then just now but as he pauses for a moment of silence, he glanced down at the table with a deep look. Remembering something that he could not let go again hours after he convinced himself not to dwell on it anymore made his heart ache.
"You didn't do anything about it right? That selfish request of mine is something I said in the spur of the moment, so you shouldn't really consider something so trivial to be done."
"But wouldn't you like to know how your little sister is living in the afterlife."
Hachiman could not help but feel restless.
In one of the temple dedicated to the "Great Bodhisattva Hachiman", located in the rural area in the Chiba prefecture, a lone man was busy drinking away a pack of beer whilst also simultaneously cleaning the floor with a wet mop, the strong cleaning chemicals used would've irritated the hell out of anyone but as he was too drunk too notice it, it didn't bother him in the slightest.
Suddenly, a shining light appeared from the altar but as he was also too drunk to notice anything to his surrounding only focusing on mopping the floor, the strange light disappeared without anyone noticing, then the sound of someone crashing on the floor erupted throughout the altar room, then finally the drunk took notice.
How many hours have passed? Or maybe a day has already passed. I don't know to be honest, my kami did tell me that the passage of time is a bit skewered up there, maybe I should've expected to have some sort of time lag. My body feels a bit weird and I also feel a bit too light headed.
Damn it, why did he just send me here so haphazardly, luckily the fall wasn't anything dangerous.
The area that I seemed to have landed on seems to be the altar room. There was a small statue of buddha and the smell of dried incense is present in this room, though the room was void of anyone, no one was luckily here to see me face plant- I mean fall on the floor.
My kami told me the fastest way to get back on earth was to teleport me into one of his shrines, I told him to just send me to the one he had on Chiba and he did just that, after bidding me farewell, he used his power as a kami to send me back down to earth, I would thank him but with a shitty landing that I had, I just couldn't bring myself to properly thank with a prayer, he must be giggling inside to what happened to me with his usual empty face up there.
Hurried footsteps entered my ears, someone must be staying up this late, don't know who it could be, it must be that bald Buddhist guardian of mine roaming around the shrine to swoop away the pesky intruders.
Sliding the door to the side in a swift motion, the smell of alcohol radiated to the one who entered just now, his very being feels like he is sobered but he is in fact a hundred percent drunk although there was no indication of it other than the smell. Great, the first one I meet back in the temple is this drunkard, who is also the one saved me and my little sister that time, and also the main guardian who trains me in priesthood.
"Fucking Hell! Hachiman why didn't you tell me you were coming back?! You could have brought back a gift for this old timer, did you come here because you miss me huh?" he slurred his words as he frantically tried to give me a hug. I, of course moved away and as he missed, he stumbles and burped loudly. The alcohol must be finally getting to him to do this.
"Hey! What is the deal with you? Can't give the one who took you in this temple a simple hug." I sighed and rubbed the bridged of my nose. Not only do I feel light-headed, I also feel a slight headache from this annoying drunkard.
"No, I didn't come back here to see you." This drunk made a sour face before clicking his tongue at me. That is very not cool as my classmate would say, I think.
"Did you come here because you ran out of money?" Did you think I am that irresponsible with my money, and it should be you who should be running out of money! You waste all your savings on buying alcohol! I wanted to say what was in my head, but I held back my tongue because I didn't want to deal with which comes after that. And considering how much busy I will get. I couldn't afford to waste more time.
"Yahata sent me here from Tenkai, don't ask me why and how I ended up there." The drunk seemed to understand the graveness of the situation and scratched his chin like a wise old man.
"What do you want me to do."
"I would like to be sent to the Chiba branch as soon as possible, I need to do something there and it's important." I didn't ask him what time it is, as this won't affect anything. I knew that a teleportation spell is the fastest way of transportation to the Chiba branch station.
He held up his hand and a magic circle appeared, and then he chanted under his breathe an incantation which I could not hear that well.
A magic circle was under me, and I braced myself for what is to come but before that can happen, he said something.
"Bring me ten cases of Asahi when you comeback." He said so cheekily, he even said it like he knows that I'm gonna return here soon. Also, what the fuck! I don't want to be spend that much money on liquor.
I sighed and cracked my neck in annoyance.
"Fuck off, I'll only buy five cases and that's all."
"Pleasure doing business with you."
With that said, the teleportation casting finally ended and I feel myself enter into an ethereal state.
