ENTRY 2
BONFIRE NIGHT

Carlisle

Another year, another Guy Fawkes effigy thrown on top of the bonfire. When I was younger, I used to think this tradition would die out. Year after year this bizarre country chooses to celebrate the fact that the Houses of Parliament were not blown up, by blowing up thousands of pounds worth of fireworks. Times have changed but the need to blow up things hasn't. Emmett loves to be in the UK during the autumn months. He says they celebrate the traditional holidays better than Americans. Halloween and Bonfire night are close together, and it also helps that the dreary weather means we are free to roam day and night.

Whoosh, bang, and the chorus of ahhs can be heard among the gathered crowd. Thousands of people all staring skyward watching in awe. Children playing with sparklers, eating hotdogs and filled with wonder. The waves of happiness steady Jasper's emotions around so many people. A large gathering can be difficult for him, yet bonfire night is never an issue.

All this reminds me of Emmett's earlier forays into pyrotechnics. Given how dangerous fire can be to our kind, he had great joy in setting off his own firework pack. He discovered them late in the 90's and thought they would be safe. On his first attempt, he lit the fuse and we all stood back the mandatory 10 feet. We waited and waited, and then with a huge bang, the box jumped up 30 feet into the air. Popping and whizzing loudly as fireworks fired in every direction. We all ran for cover. It barely lasted 5 minutes but it will forever be ingrained in our memories.

Alice was ecstatic as she had seen the outcome but it had been a total surprise to the rest of us. Esme had clung to me for dear life as we huddled behind a tree watching it all unfold. It even brought a smile to Edward's face, which it pained me to say was a rare treat to see. Alone amongst couples he often struggled with the joys of this life. As it turns out Emmett had set the box upside down and lit the bottom end. We have never let him live that little titbit down.

Years later as we watch the displays it still brings a smile to my face at how easy it is to love this life we live. Knowing that Alice has seen a big change coming, maybe next year we will celebrate as a group of mated couples.
