James dressed particularly carefully on the evening he was to be doing the project with Lily. He even tried to make his hair lay flat, but it was too stubborn for his own good. He checked the watch and saw, to his horror, that he was late. Abandoning his fruitless effort to make his hair lay flat, he grabbed his bag, and dashed out of the dormitory.

He ran face flat towards the library, sending students flying past. He stepped in the library and skidded to a halt in front of Lily, who was sitting at a corner table and looked annoyed. Though her eyes were now slightly wide with mild surprise.

"You are late" she said, pushing a stack of parchment towards him.

"I know" James panted and sat down.

"Well, I reached here at least fifteen minutes before. What were you doing?" Lily asked.

"Um... well" James said.

"Oh you know what, I don't want to know" Lily said hastily and pointed at the parchment.

"Oh...uh, so any plan how we're doing this?" James asked.

"Well, I have got a basic picture..." and they continued to work on it for the next two hours. Lily was amused that James had such good suggestions and ideas, but then again, she reflected, he was the top of their year in Transfiguration.

"And I think that's it for today" Lily said, stifling a yawn. Merlin, she was tired.

James looked up at her.

"I guess so" he said.

He began to clear everything up. Lily put her head in her hands and closed her eyes.

James shuffled everything neatly and looked at her. The light of the moon coming in through the window fell on her face and her hair glowed in it. Lily looked at him and he became aware that he was staring. He quickly looked away and stood up. Lily too, got to her feet.

"God, I'm s-so tired" she said, yawning.

James chuckled. She looked so cute like this.

Lily looked at him with her eyebrows raised.

"What's so funny?" she asked.

"Nothing" James shook his head "just that Lily Evans is too tired to get into her fiery temper".

Lily rolled her eyes, and elbowed him playfully in the chest.

"Ouch!" James exclaimed.

"What, did I do that too forcefully?" Lily asked, nervously.

"No..." James laughed "just playing for the time".

"Oh God, you are acting" Lily shook her head disbelievingly.

"So let's get going, shall we?" James asked.

"Yes" Lily said.

They walked in silence. James chanced a glance at her and saw the way her hair bounced on her back as she moved her hips. But he was caught awestruck by the beauty of her face. The moonlight fell on her face and for a moment he was positive that he had never seen something so beautiful.

Lily looked at him and caught him staring at her again. But this time James did not look away. They held each others' gazes. Then, something moved under them, and James looked down to see Mrs. Norris the annoying cat of the caretaker, narrowing her eyes at them.

"Shit" James muttered.

"But we are the Heads" Lily said "we can wander after dark".

"Only if we have patrolling duty" James reminded her. Lily's eyes widened.

"Damn" she said and when looked down, the cat had already gone to call her master.

"Gotta hide for it" James said and both of them moved down the other corridor.

"That was close" Lily said, screeching to a halt.

"Yeah" James said and leaned backwards.

CRASH.

Both of them jumped and James turned back to see that he had leaned on a vase, which accidentally fell and had shattered into a thousand fragments.

"Oh no" Lily moaned.

"C'mon" James said and grabbed her hand, setting at a run down the corridor.

"What was that noise- Oh my...now they have had it" they could hear Filch's voice, but didn't stop to look back.

"Where are the ickle Heads going?".

It was Peeves, the Poltergeist, floating in mid-air and looking down at the pair of them with a wide mischievous smile.

"Peeves, mate, not the time" James panted.

"Ah...running from Filch. What are you two up to?" Peeves cackled, blowing a raspberry.

"Oh God, we haven't got time to explain" Lily said.

"Looks like you are brewing mischief. Why, I can smell it. No no, the Heads, mustn't cause trouble, I have to inform Filch" Peeves laughed.

And before either James or Lily could stop him, Peeves shouted "HERE THEY ARE, CAUSING MORE TROUBLE FOR THE TERRIBLE CARETAKER!" at the top of his lungs.

James and Lily exchanged a terrific glance and set off at a run again, only to find the corridor ended and the way forwards was blocked.

They could hear Filch running this way, Peeves laughing, and Lily was sure that Peeves' shout was enough to wake the entire castle...

James seized her hand and dragged her towards a broom cupboard; he opened the door, pushed her inside amongst the buckets and mops, followed her in, and then slammed the door behind them.

They listened with baited breaths what was going on outside.

"Where are they Peeves?" they heard Filch's voice asking the Poltergeist.

"I shan't say" said Peeves.

"What? Don't you test my patience, Peeves. Tell me where they are right now!"

"Nope" said Peeves,. blowing another raspberry.

"Peeves, for Merlin's sake! Say where they are, or I'll have you thrown out of this castle, I promise!"

"Say please" sang Peeves.

"Peeves, I haven't got time for childish things-" said Filch dangerously.

"Say please, or I won't tell you either" cackled Peeves.

Filch hesitated.

"Fine. Please, Peeves" he said.

"I told you to say please" said Peeves.

"I just did!" said Filch, outraged. "Now tell me where they are!"

"Shan't" and with that the Poltergeist floated out of the corridor.

Filch cursed under his breath.

"I'll have him thrown out soon now, I promise" he growled, stroking Mrs. Norris.

"Looks like they aren't here" he muttered "we'll check the other end then, my sweet, c'mon". Filch walked away.

Breathing rather fast, Lily looked back at James. He looked at her too. Their faces were inches away from each other, so close they could feel each other's breaths.

Their eyes, it seemed, were fixed on each other. James hazel eyes bored into Lily startling green ones- the ones he'd loved for years, still did.

The cupboard was too small for them, Lily suddenly realized. James was leaning on her, and she had her back pressed against the door. Her eyes moved from his eyes to his lips. Lily leaned closer, and James's heart seemed to stop. She was too close. He had noticed that she was looking at his lips and he automatically leaned down towards her. They could have counted the lashes on each others' eyes.

James lips brushed against Lily's and she shivered. She grabbed his collar and kissed him full on the mouth. James stood still for a moment, then recovering from his shock, he pulled her closer by the waist and kissed her back. The kiss deepened with each second. Lily sucked his lower lip and bit it slowly. James was moving his hands slowly up and down her back.

After what felt like seconds, or may have been minutes, or ages, they pulled back, panting.

Their eyes were on each other, and only each other. For a moment, it felt to James as though Lily was the only person in the world. His heart was racing.

Lily's face was redder than her hair, but she was smiling. She leaned in closer and James closed his eyes, his heart beating madly.

"I really like you James" she whispered softly in his ear.

His heart burst out of his ribs.
