The next day, Lily and James avoided each other through out it, but couldn't continue their play when it was time for patrolling. They avoided each other's eyes at all cost.

The castle was dark, and moonlight was coming through a gap in one of the windows. Their footsteps echoed in the dark corridors, as they walked on, still avoiding eye contact.

They turned a corner and stopped.

The whole corridor was slopping wet, water leaking out from a bathroom, which bore an Out of order sign. Ten feet above the door of said bathroom, Peeves was floating in mid-air. James cursed under his breath.

"Peeves, mate, stop doing this" he called.

The Poltergeist glanced 'round and at the sight of both of them, sticked his tongue out.

"Causing mischief again?"

"We're patrolling, so you can't tell on us this time" Lily said, coolly. "Now go from here".

It seemed as though Peeves didn't have anything to do there either, so blowing a raspberry at them, he floated out of the corridor.

Lily looked back at the mess.

"Oh dear, lets see if we can fix that" she pointed at the door and James nodded.

But it was very difficult to walk. Their slippers slapped against their feet as they walked towards the door. James leaned down as they reached it and peered through the gap between the floor and the door into the bathroom.

"Reckon we've to go inside" he said, standing up, and placed his hand on the knock, but to his surprise, Lily grabbed it. James looked at her, and saw her shaking her head.

"No, we'll tell Professor McGonagall about this" she sighed.

"What? Why tell her when we can fix it?"

Lily looked at the door pointedly.

"I don't fancy going in there" she said.

"Why?" James furrowed his brow.

Lily looked at him, and sudden realisation dawned upon her face.

"Oh sorry, I forgot that you wouldn't know" she said "this is Moaning Myrtle's bathroom. She haunts the girl's toilet".

"She haunts a toilet?" James said incredulously. "How come we never found it out?"

"Forgive me, but I was under the impression that you are not a girl" Lily said, sarcastically.

"So, we'll tell this to Minnie then" James said.

Lily looked at him.

"Minnie?" she repeated. "Who's Minnie?"

"You don't know? You must be the last person Evans. Minnie's none other than our dear Professor McGonagall" James said cheerfully.

Lily looked at him, and James thought he was going to get a reprimand, but to his surprise, she smiled and shook her head.

"You and your friends" she laughed.

"Don't insult us Evans" James said.

"I'm not insulting you lot" she retorted, but playfully "I actually like that one" she said quietly.

James stared at her.

"I really-AHH!"

But she couldn't complete her sentence as her foot slipped on the water but James grabbed her waist just in time, to avoid her inevitable fall.

Lily looked away from the ceiling and at James. His grip was light but firm, as though determined not to let her fall.

They stared at each other's eyes, James still holding her. Lily's hand rested against his chest, and she could feel his heart beating very fast against his ribs.

James slowly put her back on her feet and removed his hand.

"James...about last night" Lily said slowly. She found that she could no longer ignore the fact.

"Yeah?" James said, his face turning a bit red.

She smiled at him, and found her own awkwardness vanish.

"I wanted to ask you something" she said.

"What?"

"Yesterday, after we...well, after we kissed, I told you that I like you, but you didn't answer me".

James was looking everywhere but her.

"I just wanted to clarify if..." Lily felt the colour rising in her face "if you still like me or not".

James looked back at her so fast it seemed he'd cracked his neck. Rubbing it, he said "You thought that?"

Lily nodded.

"I-still-I will always" he stopped his stammers and taking a deep breath he continued "its just I was in shock. But its only you whom I have ever liked".

"Oh" Lily said.

They stared at each other for a moment and Lily decided the time for the action had arrived.

Taking a deep breath, she took both his hands.

"Then I have something else to tell you" she whispered.

"I love you, James".

James felt as though his heart was going to break out of his ribs.

"You" he croaked "you do?"

"Of course" Lily answered.

His mouth was very dry.

"I love you too" he held her hands a little tightly as though if he let go of it, she will also walk away from him.

Lily squeezed his hands softly.

"I'm not going anywhere" she said softly.

"How did you know?" James asked, shock evident on his face.

Lily smiled.

"I know you, James" she said, simply.

They stared at each other, and then Lily leaned forward and hugged him. James hugged her back.

"Thanks for not giving up on me" she mumbled into his chest.

"I could never, Lils. I told you, you are the only person I have ever loved".

Lily said nothing, but hugged him more tightly.

They didn't know for how long they stood there, in the middle of a corridor, in each other's arms. All they knew that they did not want to let go of the other.

Finally, they broke away but didn't take their eyes away from each other.

"So..." Lily finally broke the silence, and James could have sworn he saw mischief dancing in her eyes.

"When are you going to ask me out?"

James stared at her for a moment, then burst out laughing. Lily could no longer keep a straight face. She joined him.

"Well, if you insist" he said, taking one of her hands in his own. "Will you go out with me, Evans?"

"Of course" Lily said, smiling.

James smiled back at her.

Finally, after years of pursuing her, Lily said 'yes'!
