Chapter One: Haunted Dreams.
Unable to stop the scream that tore from her throat, Sanira Tremaine awoke from her night terror covered in sweat; she gasped clutching at her chest trying to calm herself down as her eyes darted around the strange room that she had been sleeping in. It took her a moment to remember where she was and why she was not in her own chambers back in Aeredale, she would likely not see those chambers again.
Her handmaiden jolted awake from her palette on the floor never the bed, she stumbled from her position and moved to comfort Sanira who was trembling. The night terrors that plagued Sanira had been happening since she was a little girl, no one understood the things that she claimed to see and her parents had their Maester give her a sleeping draught to help her sleep. They had long since stopped coming to check on the fifteen-year-old instead leaving her to be tended to by her lady, who had been instructed to ensure that such events were kept quiet especially with the approaching wedding.
"It's okay my lady," Aiana whispered trying to sooth Sanira, she had been with her for such a long time and she knew that it took her lady a moment to completely shake a night terror from her mind. Sanira took several deep breathes, she shook her head as tears burned her eyes and she knew that it had been horrible this time; the night terror clung to her mind not wanting to leave or let her have any peace.
Aiana was patient while she waited for Sanira to snap out of this, she was sure many people had heard Sanira scream but none of them had come to see if there was anything wrong. The door to the room slowly opened and Aiana quickly stood from her place at Sanira's side, she curtsied to Lady Catelyn Stark a little surprised to see her at this late hour. Catelyn's eyes swept the room before they landed on Sanira and her handmaiden, a frown forming on her face as she took in the shaking young woman and the fact that her own parents had not risen to come and see what was going on.
Their chambers were closer than her own where and she had been jolted from her slumber by the sounds of terror, she had quickly pulled on her chamber robe before coming to investigate. It had been hard enough to encourage her own daughters to return to the chamber having poked their heads out as she had passed curious as to what was going on.
"Is everything alright?" Catelyn asked moving further into the room, her eyes focused on the young woman that would soon be married to her eldest boy. The match was one that Eddard had been eager for, especially considering his close friendship with the girl's father. He, Robert and Rolan had been wards in the Eyrie together and had fought during the rebellion that had led to Robert becoming King side by side.
It had been arranged for as long as Catelyn could recall, her eldest son was always going to marry Tremaine's only daughter; a match that would strengthen the North despite the fact that Catelyn would have preferred a Southern bride for her son.
"Of course, Lady Stark. My lady suffers from night terrors is all," Aiana replied moving to help Sanira, she wished there was more than she could do but she was limited. Her lady would be very embarrassed when she found out that she had woken Lady Stark, she worried enough that her night terrors would cause issues when she was wed.
Catelyn slowly nodded her head not entirely convinced, her eyes scanning the barely conscious Sanira for any sign of injury before she nodded her head; a small frown upon her face that no one else had come to check on her. Surely having heard such screaming, her mother would have wanted to see that she was well.
If it had been any of her own children, Catelyn would have spent all night with them ensuring that they did not have any more no matter how old they were; she could not understand how anyone could ignore a scream like that.
"It's okay Lady Stark, I have everything under control," Aiana reassured knowing that Catelyn would probably want to get back to bed, there was still much to be done in the way of planning for the wedding. Catelyn would have her own duties to attend to as well, just because her son was getting married did not mean that Winterfell had stopped running.
"You woke Lady Stark last night," Lady Arlenna Lannister stated stalking into the chambers, her red gown flowing around her and her lips pursed as her daughter came into view. It had been mortifying to be confronted by the eldest Tully daughter and Arlenna had been quick to reassure Catelyn that there was nothing wrong, she hated that her daughter had not grown out of this childish antics.
She ignored Sanira's lady while she finished brushing Sanira's hair, if she had her way, she would have insisted on sticking her own ladies here to deal with Sanira but her daughter had refused and Rolan had defended her decision.
Her dunce of a husband had stated that as Sanira was preparing to wed then the least they could do was to allow her to be served by her own lady especially with the stress of preparing for her new role. Arlenna had such high hopes when she had been told that she had birthed a daughter, a part of her imagined a girl in her own imagine instead Sanira favoured her father's colouring.
"I will go and apologise after breakfast mother," Sanira mumbled looking down at her hands, trying to shrink under her mother's gaze knowing that at least here in Winterfell she could not raise her voice any higher to scold her. Sanira could not remember a time where her mother had looked out for her, she had always been left with her septa and then she had handmaids to look after her; Arlenna had always been more interested in Sanira's elder brother. Arthur unlike his two younger siblings favoured his mother's colouring, something that Arlenna had always doted upon especially since she prided herself on her Lannister name.
"I thought we were over those silly dreams," Arlenna scolded with a shake of her head, she could only imagine how poor Robb would come with Sanira as a wife. It had come as a surprise when Rolan had told her about the agreement that he had reached with Eddard Stark, never had she managed that her own daughter would make a match higher than her own.
Her daughter would one day be the wife of the Warden of the North, Lord of Winterfell while Arlenna had never aspired to more than a Lady of Aeredale. She still cursed her fool of a father for making such a poor match for her, she had always hoped that she would find a way out of it but had failed, even her own brother had encouraged her to see the match through.
Sanira took a deep breath and stared at herself in the mirror while Aiana finished doing her hair, she was used to her mother's scolding but she wished for once she would be more understanding about the dreams that she had. She could not remember when they had started but Sanira had been having them since she was a little girl, they felt so real and she saw things that just did not make sense to her.
Arlenna clicked her tongue watching the handmaid arrange Sanira's hair, she had done her best to make sure that her daughter was prepared for her new role and she had hired the best septa to ensure Sanira would learn how to be a proper lady.
"You remember what I told you before we left?" Arlenna asked looking around the room, it was only temporary and soon Sanira would be moving into new quarters that she would share with new husband. The wedding was in a matter of days and Arlenna was looking forward to it being over so that she could return to Aeredale; she had little interest in hanging around and she doubted that there was any reason that they needed to. Rolan was busy discussing things with Eddard and Arlenna knew that once he was finished that they would be heading home; it would be a long trip as it had been crossing the North to reach Winterfell.
"Yes mother," Sanira replied, she had not really enjoyed that talk especially about what would be expected of her by her new husband. The talk about what would happen on her wedding night had left Sanira feeling ill and dreading the moment that she was left alone with Robb. Not that she had seen much of her future husband other than the occasional glance at the dinner table.
"Good. I do hope that you remember what to do," Arlenna mused before turning to leave, she really didn't want to be holding Sanira's hand every step of the way and she was sure that standing on her own two feet would be good for her. Sanira let out a sigh of relief as the door closed behind her mother, the air felt less tense and she could only hope that she did not disappoint her mother further when she was married.
