Prologue
Jacob Black was fuming, after all, he had done! He had wrongly assumed with the death of Chief of Police Charlie Swan, the land he owned or at least the land the Quileutes leased from him would go to his father, tribal Chief Billy Black. But no it was all left to his niece, a niece no one knew and as far as he was aware had never been to Forks. He was wrong on both counts; his father knew the girl very well or had known her when she was younger. Every year until she was fifteen Isabella Swan came to Forks for two weeks every summer. The same two weeks Jacob was away at the Makah Rez with the Clearwater's to see extended family.
Isabella Swan was devastated as she approached her most immediate boss's door. Her uncle, who she loved dearly, had died. It had been declared death by misadventure, she hated that phrase. It was like saying we don't really know exactly, but here's our best guess. An animal she was told, had obviously run out in front of his cruiser and he had swerved to avoid it and rolled the car and died inside. She had been telephoned by her Uncle Charlie's lawyer and he needed her in Forks for the funeral and will reading. Although at a critical point in her case, it was decided seven days was all she could have and then it would be straight back to work.
Edward Cullen was bored, more bored than he usually was. What was the point of reading his family's minds when they did nothing exciting, ever! Not understanding they let him read only what they wanted. He had taken to running around Forks and as close to the border as possible with La Push. Well, it was more a treaty line than a border; you couldn't miss it because of the stench! His persistence paid off eventually when he heard the thoughts of the future Chief of the local tribe. Well, he's been a naughty boy and was now definite blackmail fodder for a long time. The obnoxious child that was Edward Cullen wasn't above blackmailing people for their most private thoughts.
Their three worlds were about to collide dramatically. None of them knew this as yet, but they would soon converge on the outskirts of Forks. But unfortunately one will die for no good reason, apart from being alive. One would have to run far, far away from his home and his family for his part in all this, in case his other wrongdoings came to light. The other would be taken to task for his part in the debacle that would follow, by those who have way more pull than he could ever dream of. His inability to not only cover his tracks or stage a scene would come back to haunt him. But his arrogance at refusing to double-check the facts would bite him in the ass most unpleasantly.
So the stage is soon to be set, the players unaware of their parts in what's about to play out as of yet. The ripples caused by these events will shake the very foundations of a nearby family and bring old friends in from the cold. The backlash will stretch across the ocean and past leniencies' will be put a stop to forever and new rules put in place. The world as all three knows it is about to change dramatically and irrevocably. Only one can come out on top, while the others suffer for their part in it all. It is just a normal tale of greed, avarice, pettiness and arrogance. But they messed with the wrong person which they are about to find out.
