Chapter 1
"When I say we, I mean my family and I." Edward says expressionless and I stare disbelieving at him.
"You don't want me to come?" I whisper and he shakes his head. "Oh…. that changes things." I murmur, then I take a deep breath. "Can I meet the other's one last time?" I ask and he smiles apologetically.
"They have already left. I stayed to say goodbye." I nod a little.
"Goodbye then Edward. I'll always love you." I whisper as I stand up on my toes and kiss his lips quickly, then I walk towards the house.
"Goodbye Bella." Edward whispers after me and when I look over my shoulder he is gone. He left me just like I knew he would. Without thinking I walk towards my truck and then I drive towards La Push. I pull my phone up on the way and call Charlie at the station.
"Chief Swan?" He answers and I swallow thickly.
"Hi dad." I murmur.
"Is something wrong? Are you hurt?" He asks, panicking, and I take a deep breath.
"Edward dumped me. I'm on my way to Jacob and Billy, but I don't remember the way." I say hoarsely and am met with complete silence.
"Are you injured Bells?" He asks seriously.
"No, or… just emotionally." I say. He exhales relieved and gives me directions to the Black's.
"I'll come by later with pizza, okay?" He asks in a gentle tone.
"Sounds good, see you later." I whisper and we hang up. The road is quiet and lonely, the only sound are the raindrops hitting the truck and my sobs. As soon as I turn the engine off, Jakob is outside my door with an excited grin almost splitting his face. I chuckle and smile at him through my tears. His smile drops instantly as he sees my tears and he quickly has me gathered in a hug.
"Are you hurt, Bella?" He asks as he tries to check me for injuries. I chuckle darkly and shake my head.
"Not physically. Edward dumped me, but I don't want to talk about it. Do you have time to do something?" I ask, he smiles a little and pulls me with him towards the ocean. I just now realize he is incredibly warm. "Are you sick?" I ask him worriedly and he looks confused at me.
"No?" He asks and I frown.
"It feels like you have a fever." I say and he freezes for a second, then he looks hesitantly at me. "What?" I ask and he opens his mouth to say something, but nothing comes out.
"Nothing." He murmurs and pulls me down to the beach. I look out over the ocean and see a flash of red. Victoria… didn't the C-cullens have a fight about her? Jasper said they needed to kill her since James was her mate and if they didn't…. She would come after me. (AN: I know that fight doesn't exist in twilight but I'm putting it in there) I freeze, my breathing seizing as my heart pounds. I search with my eyes through the waves again, my heart in my throat.
"Bella?" Jakob's worried voice snaps me out of my mind and I quickly look at him before continuing my search. The red is gone.
"Yeah?" I ask him as I try to calm myself down. How the hell am I supposed to protect myself from vampires? Victoria seems like one of those that go after me, like Jasper said, since I was the reason James were killed-
"BELLA!" Jacob yells. I flinch violently and look at him as he shakes me gently.
"I'm sorry, what?" I ask and he sighs relieved.
"You zoned out completely and you're even paler than usual. What are you thinking about?" He asks and I hesitate.
"Just some friends of the Cullens." I mumble and he freezes for a second. I stare confused at him.
"Bella…. How much do you know about the Cullens?" He asks and I look confused at him. What does he know?
"Everything?" I ask, pretending to be stupid, and he sighs.
"Do you know what they are?" He asks and my heart skips a beat.
"What do you mean Jake? They are a family?" I ask as if I don't understand and he glares at me.
"I know you understand what I mean, Bella." He says and I look confused at him. Does he mean that they are vampires? Well… the tribal legends was how I found out after all.
"What are you talking about, Jake? Your tribal legends?" I ask and he freezes.
"How do you know about those?" He asks harshly and I roll my eyes.
"You told me that day at the beach…" I trail off as he relaxes.
"Yes, right, good-" A howl breaks through the air and I look around, my heart racing again. Jakob looks into the woods, seemingly listening to something then he sighs deeply. "Look Bells, I need to go and do something with the tribe. Go straight back to Billy's and stay inside with him, ok?" He asks seriously and I nod confused. I get up and walk hurriedly down the path towards the house. Once again, when I look over my shoulder, the man is gone, this time it was Jake.
I knock gently on the door and let myself in.
"Hello?" Billy's gruff voice calls and I hear the wheels of his chair squeak as he rounds the corner from his bedroom.
"Hi Billy. I'm sorry if I disturbed you." I say and he smiles when he sees me.
"Hi Bella. What are you doing here today?" He asks as he rolls into the kitchen, motioning for me to follow.
"I needed to get away from Forks. Charlie is bringing pizza for dinner." I say as I put on the tea water for me. "A beer?" I ask him, he smiles and nods.
"Yes please." He says as he takes it from me. "Why did you need to get out of Forks? Did that blood- Cullen boy do something?" He asks, but catches himself before he calls him a bloodsucker. I resist the urge to roll my eyes at him.
"He dumped me." I murmur as I look down into my cup. I see in the corner of my eye that a smile graces his lips before he turns serius.
"I'm sorry to hear that Bella." He says and I look at him disbelievingly.
"Billy, we have known each other quite long. Please don't say things you don't mean." I say and he smiles sheepishly.
"Point taken. Where's Jacob?" He asks and I sigh.
"He said he needed to go do some tribal thing." I say as I pour myself a cup of tea and sit down at the small dinner table.
"Ah, yes he helps Sam with some things around the reservation. He had an appointment to make a few minutes ago. He must have just remembered it." Billy grumbles, but I see he's hiding something. I just nod a little and continue sipping my tea. What could he be hiding?
