Mai arrived at school an hour before the school bell rings, indicating the start of their first class. She was early today and remember the homework she forgot to do yesterday. She would be damned if her teacher learned that she didn't do her Math homework. That teacher doesn't like her that much and she knew he would humiliate her using his lecture period in case that happened. Mai smiled, gazing at her finished work and watch the students enter the classroom in groups and pairs.
No one ever look at her – or no one dared to look at her as some students passed by her seat. Mai ignored them and turn her gaze to the window. She can see the late students show faces of dissatisfaction as the senior student in charge of the gate escorted them to the prefect's office. She also noticed the principal anxiously waiting by the gate. Mai stared at him in wonder why is he acting like that until a black SUV stopped in front of him.
She can see the relieved face of the principal when he saw a man get out of the vehicle seconded by a younger man in black. They both wore a deadpan looks on their faces as they greeted the old man who waited for them. Mai took her attention off of them and listen to their homeroom teacher give some reminders before their first class begins. When she gazed outside after a few minutes, the men outside are gone.
Mai sighed when she saw a middle aged man enter their classroom. The teacher gave Mai an unfriendly glare as he demanded to hand over their homeworks, not letting his sight left Mai for a second. The brunette feels funny as she pass her notes to the student in front of her together with her classmates' notes. She did not miss the sight of the teacher's immediate search for her notebook to check her work. She smirked at her teacher's blackened face that denotes her victory.
"Taniyama! Answer this equation!" Watanabe-sensei angrily wrote a problem on the white board as the students watch Mai stood up from her seat and lazily walk towards the platform. She took the marker from the old teacher's hand and solved the problem.
That is how Mai begins her day.
Shibuya Kazuya unload the equipment from the van while Lin Koujo set the equipment up from outside the old school building and put a camera on the entrance. The principal left them a while ago and officially begin their work.
The principal hired them to investigate the 'haunted' schoolhouse in their school. They want to build a gym on the location and want to demolish the schoolhouse but the demolition was always postponed by accidents and inauspicious events that happened over the years.
Shibuya Kazuya knew that the building is not haunted by the first look but he can see the worry on the client's eyes so he decided to give him a solid evidence to convince him that the building is not haunted and he can continue the demolition without worry.
They were done setting up and ch cling the area that afternoon and Shibuya Kazuya walk towards the school main building to report what they have learned to the principal. The principal is still not convinced that the building is not haunted and told him to investigate further. Shibuya Kazuya also noticed the hesitation in the client's eyes and knew that he is routing his company so he just sighed and left the office.
He passed by the Audio Visual Studio and heard someone talking inside the room. His curiousity gets better of himself and soundlessly watched from the door. He saw a group of students telling ghost stories inside the dark room with flashlights glowing in their hands. He was about to go away when he heard someone talking about the old schoolhouse.
Mai gathered her things and neatly stuff them in her bag as she went straight to the Audio Visual Studio. She had an appointment with some students from the other class. She smiled as she prepared the piece she will use to scare her schoolmates. They are telling ghost stories today as a past time. They do this secretly every Monday and Mai is happy doing this kind of thing.
Most of the students avoided her like plague and they are the only ones who had the courage to talk to her and treat her amicably. Mai enjoyed their company but she told them to only do it privately to avoid unwanted attention for them. One time when Keiko and Michiru openly made friends with her, the bullies took advantage of her absence and bully them because they a friend of a cursed witch. Mai didn't want that to happen so they can only meet secretly.
"Mai, you're late!" Keiko feign an angry face as she poke Mai's left cheek.
"Shh! Keiko, keep your voice down! We almost got caught by a teacher a while ago because of your big mouth!" Michiru reprimanded her as she pulled the ear of her friend.
Mai chuckled and took her flashlight out as Keiko began telling a scary story. They story was supposed to be scary but because Keiko relayed it in a cute voice so the others didn't feel a tinge of fear during her play. Keiko turned her flashlight off as Mai smirk and show a scary face.
Mai chuckled when her friends screamed out of fear after she finished her story. Their breathing is ragged and they even paused to drink water with their place faces.
"Mai, stop using that scary voice of yours! You almost made me peed myself!" Michiru slapped her shoulder as Mai turned off her flashlight.
"Alright, alright. It's your turn now. Make sure your story is scary enough to freak me out or I will be the winner again this week." Mai answered with a smug look, making her friends glare at her.
Eversince they started telling stories after class, they noticed that Mai isn't scared of the stories and they are always the ones who was freaked out of their minds so they proposed a bet that whoever scares their friend Mai will get a month of free dinner! But they failed numerous times and ended up buying Mai's favourite bubble tea every Monday.
"Okay! I will surely freak you out this time! Do you know about the old schoolhouse? The one that had been a prohibited area from students and civilians?"
"Oh! That place is said to be haunted!" Keiko stated while keeping herself calm while shaking.
Mai listened to her friend lazily as she play with her shoulder length hair. She knew that the haunting is just rumours and that the old schoolhouse is not haunted. Though she didn't really enter the schoolhouse to personally check, she didn't feel anything every time she passed by the building.
Her playful smile disappeared when she felt someone staring at them from outside the room. She thought it was a teacher so she sneakily took a peek though her peripheral vision, only to find a slender silhouette of a man standing by the door. He is not doing anything and Mai doesn't feel any malicious feeling coming from him so she just let him be and let Michiru finished her piece. The last girl turned off her flashlight and the three started their countdown.
"O-One" Keiko shakily started as she grip Mai's sleeves are as she nervously shut her eyes.
"Two."
"Three."
The girls waited as Mai kept an eye out of the stranger who is watching them. She felt him move inside and..
"Four."
"Kyaaah!!!"
"The ghost is here to kill us!!"
"Mai!! Save me!!"
The two cried as they hug Mai's frame tightly as the light suddenly switched on. Not only did Mai's body got assaulted, she can feel her ears ringing after they both scream from each side of her ear.
"Guys! Let go. I can't breath! And calm down. It is a human!" Mai struggled a bit as her friends nervously turn their heads behind them. Mai desperately pushed them aside and cough profusely but no come come to her aide as her friends run towards the handsome outsider who just scared them a while ago.
Mai watched speechlessly as her friends' eyes almost turn into hearts as they abandon her to take a look their new found crush. She suddenly felt pathetic. She glared at them as she fix her ruffled clothes.
Come on, guys! Are you really my friends?! How dare you abandon me for a guy! Wait, he is a bit familiar.
"Is it you just now?"
"Yes. I'm sorry. Did I scare you? The lights are off and I heard some noise so..."
"Holy crap! You scared the hell out of me!"
"I am sorry."
His baritone voice is cold but soothing and this made the two girls almost scream in delight. His smiles are also handsome that you can die for it. But Mai, who is a few meters away from them, can see the young man's facade while scanning him. Mai then remembered that he is one of the men who the principal is waiting for by the gate.
His eyes are not smiling. What is he planning?
"No worries! Are you a transfer student? I didn't see you around these past weeks." Michiru asked as they step closer to the young man.
"Sort of." The man flatly answered and set his eyes towards the young brunette who is staring at him with furrowed brows for seconds now. He can feel that she is suspicious about him and she is totally unlike the other girl who are currently looking at him with dreamy eyes.
He was a bit intrigued by this brown haired girl but seeing how she was just staring at him and saying nothing, he just calmly took his gaze away from her and continue conversing with the other two.
"Oh! What year are you in?"
"I just turned seventeen this year." He answered while walking towards the white board.
This answer made the girls squeek and started calling him 'sempai' but Mai was a bit thrown by this.
That is an odd answer. He can just say that he is in third grade. Is he from overseas? I remember the same kind of answer when I asked the same question to an overseas exchange student.
"By the way, what are you doing?" That young man asked them as Keiko immediately obliged, giving him an answer.
"Oh! We are telling ghost stories!"
"Ghost stories? Would you mind if I join you next time?"
"Yes! Absolutely! We can just meet at Class 2-F at the same time!"
"Okay." He answered giving them his million dollar smile again.
Seeing how fake his smile is, Mai couldn't help but to grumble in annoyance.
Guys! We only do this once a week! What's with this impromptu sched?! Didn't you fear teachers discovering this after-school activities? And don't go deciding without my permission!
"Who are you?" Mai asked, making her the center of attention inside the room. Her lips are pursed together, forming a small pout. The young man can feel annoyance coming from the young lady but he didn't mind it a bit and instead find it quite pleasant.
"Shibuya. It is Shibuya Kazuya."
He answered and gave Mai a smile but Mai just stare at him afterwards, making him slightly amused that someone had withstand not fawning over his looks. Seeing that fake smile, Mai become more irritated somehow and her guts is telling her something.
He is lying. Why would he like about his name?
"Then what are you doing here?"
"I have some errands to do."
Well, this answer doesn't seem to be a lie.
"Do what you want. Guys, I am leaving and you better hurry up and buy me my bubble tea." Mai stated and picked her bag from the floor.
"Eeh?!" Her friends groan in disbelief as they saw her walking towards the entrance.
"Mai!" Keiko scolded her and grabbed her to stop her from leaving and smiled sweetly at Shibuya Kazuya.
"Please just ignore her, Shibuya-sempai!"
"It is okay. Please go on. I will just do some dubbing and will also go home." He answered while looking at Mai, who openly harrumphed at him while crossing her arms in front of her chest.
This is a lie!
"Aaw.. Okay! So see you tomorrow!"
"See you tomorrow."
Michiru and Keiko reluctantly picked their bags and turn to look back at Shibuya every step they take away from him. Mai was so irritated by how slow they are so she pulled them away by force before a teacher caught them in the hallway.
Highschool brats!
Shibuya watched them as their back became smaller and smaller. He, himself, didn't noticed but his lips formed a small amused smile as he watch the young short haired brunette pull her friends away.
"Kazuya, you wasted a bit of time. Did you discover something about the case?" Lin Koujo asked when the young lad arrived at the van parked beside the old schoolhouse.
"No. I just encountered a bunch of highschool girls."
Lin didn't asked further and thought that it was just the usual where they admired his looks but what he didn't know is his charge met someone so interesting that got his attention that is very difficult to get.
Mai stretched her arms as she walk towards her school. She had a good night sleep and is in a very good mood. The sakura is in full bloom and she was glad she was a bit early to see this all to herself. She took her phone and took a picture of it but she saw the old schoolhouse when she turn her phone camera to the right.
Michiru said that is is cursed but Mai feel nothing about the schoolhouse. And without noticing it, her curiosity brought her to the entrance of the prohibited area. Mai was a bit nervous about being caught and thought of leaving since she really doesn't feel anything from it when she saw something throught the window.
"A camera?" Mai asked herself and cautiously opened the door to enter. She was so careful not to touch anything since she knew the building is made of wood and is probably rotting. It has the high chance of collapsing and causing some accident.
"It is really a camera. But who would pu a camera here?" Mai whispered as she carefully walk near it while looking around.
The entrance is filled with shelves and saw some unsteady cabinets that are in the verge of collapse especially the one behind the camera.
A small move and it would collapse and destroy the gadget. It looks pretty expensive too. I think I'll move it to a safe place.
Mai carefully held the camera stand and move it away from the unsteady shelves. Once she moved it and was about to leave, she head a loud set of footsteps coming and saw a man impulsively open the door.
"Who's there?!"
Mai saw the shelves shaking as the tall man walked towards here. She knew that these will collapse soon if her continue walking like that!
"Wait! Stop!"
But her warning was a bit late since the shelves near him began to fall. Mai subconsciously ran towards him to push him away from danger but she was too late and they both were caught by the shelves.
Dusts suffocate the both of them as they simultaneously cough it out. Mai immediately noticed the blood on the tall man's forehead and pushed the shelves off of them with all her might.
"Mister, are you okay?!" Mai finally asked after pushing the last shelf away from them using an unfounded strength. Their clothes are dusty and they both look pathetic. Ignoring the pain on her legs, she struggled to stand and helped the man up.
"What happened here? Lin?!" A surprised familiar tone entered Mai's ears as he look up and saw Shibuya at the doorstep.
Mai put the injured man's arm around her neck and drag both of them out. The newcomer's hair is a bit messy and his brething is a bit ragged so she assumed that he was running to come here.
He must have saw what happened through the camera and rushed here.
"You are with him right? Hurry up and help me. There is a hospital near the school entrance." Mai said and Shibuya immediately held Lin.
"The school bell is ringing. You better hurry along. I can take care of this." Shibuya said but Mai ignored him and continue walking with Lin's weight on her.
"No. It is okay. I can't show up in school with this appearance anyway." Mai said but she felt the injured man tried to pull away from her.
"Thanks but no thanks. You already done enough for this day." Lin said.
His tone was a angry and rude plus his face is really scary but Mai didn't back away and pulled him to her and began walking again. She would've been scared if they're in another scenario but Mai was busy thinking about his injuries to bother.
The nurses immediately took care of the injured man right after they entered the emergency room. Mai sighed in relief and took off her blazer to clean it when she felt a stare on her back. She turned around and saw the young man looking at her.
"Look, I am sorry for injuring your friend. I was just putting the camera away from the shelves when he came in and entered impulsively that cause the shelves to collapse." Mai explained but he suddenly pulled her by arm and drag her towards a nurse.
"H-hey! What are you doing?!" Mai asked and struggle out of his grip when she heard him asked the teacher to tend her.
"You are injured. Hurry up and let the nurse disinfect and bandage it."
Mai look down and noticed multiple cuts on her fair looking legs. She was even surprised when she saw blood oozing from a wound on her calf. The pain she didn't feel a while ago suddenly came as she followed the nurse somewhere to sit.
"Taniyama-san, why do you keep on injuring yourself? How many times is it this week?" The old nurse asked in a distressed voice as she disinfect the wounds on her legs.
Luckily, her arms arm protected by her blazer and just received a few bruises. Mai chuckled at her and stop herself from wincing in pain. The old nurse knew her and she is the one who tend to her when she is injured. The old nurse is one of her rarest friend and she respects her a lot. She nags a lot though. Mai keep up her smile as she listen to the nagging nurse.
When Mai's legs were wrapped up, she went to the cashier to pay for the fees for her and that man. She saw Shibuya there and immediately stopped him from paying up.
"I will pay. It is my fault anyway." Mai stater as she brought out her phone and hand it to the cashier when she noticed that her phone was never picked up by someone.
She look up only to see how the cashier felicitously stare at the handsome young man beside her. Mai stopped herself from exploding in rage as she tap the table.
"Miss! I will pay with * account. Miss!"
But failed. It seems as if the world revolve around this sinful man that she didn't even bother to look at Mai for a second. Even Shibuya was bothered by the cashier's attitude but when he saw the young brunette's reaction, he let it be and didn't say a word.
Okay. That's it!
"Miss! I am paying! Hurry up!"
Mai slammed her hands on the table between her and the cashier and that woke the older woman from her daydreams. And in fact, Mai caught other people's attention but she was too irritated to bother it.
The cashier snatched her phone while glaring at her and scan the QR code on its screen. Seeing the impatient and rude actions of the cashier, she didn't wait for her to hand her phone back and snatched it the second the code was scanned. She then turned her back and angrily put her phone in her pocket.
"Geez! What is she? A highschool girl?!" Mai grumbled and took a seat on the beach to fix her appearance.
"We met yesterday. What is your name?"
"Taniyama Mai." Mai bluntly answer and brush away the dust from her blazer.
I missed my math class but it's okay. A break from Watanabe-sensei is good once in a while though I am pretty sure he left a lot of homework forme to miss out. Well, I will just ask Michiru about it.
"I am really sorry about what happened. I am late so I will be going now. You can tell me about your friend's situation after school. If he needs more test or medicine, you can contact me in this number to ask for compensation." Mai said giving him a piece of paper.
Shibuya nodded at her as she waved him goodbye. The young lad in black watch her leave again and went to his assistant's room. He saw a cast on his left leg and asked that doctor about his situation. Hearing that he will not be able to walk properly for a few weeks, he was feeling a bit glad instead of being annoyed like his usual reaction to things like this.
Taniyama Mai, huh?
