You Can't Always Have What You Want In Life
Chapter 1
Maura had known Jane Rizzoli all her life, well most of her life. They had met when they were seven years old, Jane was out in the neighbourhood playing on her bike when Maura had run out in front of her, causing Jane to lose her balance and topple over, hitting the ground with a thud. Maura had helped Jane to her feet, their eyes locked and ever since that day, they had been best friends…
They went everywhere together, spent every waking moment together.
Maura was 17 when she realised that she was in love with Jane Rizzoli. It didn't come as a shock to her, Jane was beautiful after all. Jane loved her back, she had never told Maura this but Maura just knew. She also knew that her parents would never accept that she was gay. Her parents were loving towards her and her siblings, they never wanted for anything but they were also very conservative. They weren't religious, they didn't hate gays on the face of it but they did not want gay children.
Her father was a Republican senator, her mother a Republican Governor. They had aspirations for their children. Her brother John was going to go to law school, make law review, clerk for a supreme court justice and then one day become a judge. He would marry the daughter of a senator and have children.
Her sister Caroline would enter into Politics like their parents. She would start out working as her mothers campaign manager for her reelection, rising up the ranks. She would marry a fellow politician and have four children.
And Maura would go to med school, and become the Chief Medical examiner of Boston. She would marry Michael Newman, and have children. She liked Michael, she had known him since she was a child, her parents were old friends. His father and her father went to college together. She liked Michael, she really did but she didn't love him. She loved Jane Clementine Rizzoli…
Age 17
Maura and Jane were laying on Jane's bed, listening to music, enjoying the moment when her door swung open. Both girls shot up "Maura honey, are you staying for dinner" Angela Rizzoli said, looking at the girls.
"Ma can you knock! You scared the shit out of us!" "Jane Clementine Rizzoli you watch your language." Maura giggles at the interaction between Jane and Angela, she could never speak like that to her own mother. Jane rolls her eyes at her mother and lays back down, motioning for Maura to lay down next to her. "yes thank you Mrs Rizzoli, I would love to stay for dinner". "Call me Angela dear, you have known me long enough now…you are such a polite young lady Maura, Janie why cant you be more like Maura?"
Jane scoffs at her mother, "Ma can you get out of my room please, we are trying to relax." "Fine I'm going…" Angela turned to leave, stopping inches away from the door, she turned to Jane, smiled and said "I love you Janie…dinner will be ready in an hour." Jane smiles back at her mother "Love you too Ma…"
Once Angela had gone, Maura settled back down next to Jane. A comfortable silence settled between them. She reached down and linked her fingers with Jane's, wishing she could stay like this forever.
It was a Wednesday, the first Wednesday of the month of August when Maura started to question her sexuality and also her feelings towards Jane. Maura remembers the moment vividly. She and Jane were sitting in Jane's room after school. Jane had been very quite all day, distant even, in all the years they had been friends, Jane had never been distant with her.
"Whats the matter Jane? You have been quiet all day"
Jane couldn't look at Maura, her eyes roaming all over her room before settling on her hands in front of her. Maura took Jane's hand in hers and gently squeezed it "talk to me Jane, you are my best friend and I love you" Jane looked up, she looked Maura in the eyes, took a deep breath "Maura, I'm gay"
