"... You had a 'political disagreement' with your teammate?" Penny asks, a look of confusion on her face.
"Yes." Blake says, straight-faced. They had already left the cafe, trying to find a more private place to talk.
"About... the White Fang. Which you were defending."
Blake cringes at this. "I mean, they obviously went too far with some of the things they did..."
"But you doubt that they would stoop so low as to resort to... robbing dust? Despite their other numerous crimes?" Penny continue. "While Weiss disagreed, which caused an argument, and this made you... run away?"
"...Yes." Blake says, knowing how lame the excuse was. It was suspicious at best and made her look like she was overreacting now that she thought about how it sounded, but it was the only excuse she could think of on the fly and not saying anything at all would be more suspicious but-
"Then perhaps we should go and prove the White Fang's innocence!" Penny shouts out loud, making Blake bug her eyes out and shush her, looking around for anyone that might have heard. Thankfully, there was no one around.
"Shhh!" Blake hisses, then turns to Penny. "What do you mean? And quietly this time!"
"We find evidence that the White Fang are not behind the Dust robberies, and show them to your teammates! That way, there would no longer be any need for you to stay away from your team!"
Blake blinks. That... actually sounds like a plan. "Where would we find that evidence?"
Penny paused for a moment, eyes flashing green. "There has been rumours of a sizable dust shipment from the SDC to be offloaded today. There is a 78% chance that it could be targeted by thieves, White Fang or otherwise." Penny narrows her eyes. "Which is quite a high chance. There aren't even guards posted. Perhaps I should contact the authorities inste-"
"Wait, Penny." Blake frowns. It's something. There's a chance that the White Fang won't show up because they were somewhere else, but a shipment that big should attract some criminals.
"Where's the shipment headed?"
"Not that I'm ungrateful for the help, but... why do you want to help?" Yang asks.
Her companion (who had introduced himself as Sun Wukong) grins. "What, don't like the company?"
"I'm just curious-" Cautious. "Cause last I saw you, I'm pretty sure you were running from the cops. This isn't some convoluted plan to mug me, right?" Yang says, teasingly. Even if Sun was a bad guy, she was sure she could take him. And besides, the Faunus seemed friendly enough.
Sun rolled his eyes, putting his hands on his head as he walked. "Nah. If you're looking for some kind of secret reason, there's none really. I just wanna help."
"So you're just a good samaritan then?"
"More like I'm bored out of my mind, but yeah! Besides, you looked like you needed the help."
"That reminds me..." Yang stops. "How did you know that I was looking for someone?"
Sun shrugs. "Your friend and the Schnee's little argument wasn't quiet. Like, at all. Seriously, with how long those two were arguing you were probably looking for one or the other."
Yang cringed. Now that she thought about that...
You shouldn't have let them argue so loudly. It would be surprising if Sun was the only one who heard those two.
"Let's just go." Yang grumbles, going back to walking.
Penny wasn't an idiot. Woefully confused about social norms, yes, but she knows a lie when she hears one. Or at the very least omitted truths.
The way Blake explained her and Weiss's argument made it sound like there was much more going on. While the White Fang were a terrorist organization, there was no doubt there cause was sympathetic, only the group's violent ways of gaining equality the dividing point for most people. There were always arguments if the group were purely evil or just misguided.
Which made it quite a surprise when Blake tried framing the fact that Weiss simply believed that the White Fang were behind dust robberies the reason why she ran. It seemed like an overreaction, and if Weiss were to go too far Penny was sure that Ruby or Yang would have intervened.
After Blake tried fabricating her excuse to Penny, she quickly searched the internet through the CCT using her software. It took some digging, but 'Belladonna White Fang' pulled up some results eventually:
Ghira Belladonna, Ex-High Leader of the White Fang, which was merely a peaceful protest group for Faunus rights till he stepped down.
Blake's fear and defensiveness made sense now. Of course she would be defensive of the White Fang, her father having found the organization, and of course she would be afraid of what her teammates thought about her. Blake just wanted to believe that the White Fang were still doing good.
Which was why Penny and Blake were looking over a shipyard, a shipment of SDC containers having been left behind.
Either an entirely different band of thieves would come to take the dust shipment, which would reveal the White Fang were innocent in the robberies (and then they apprehend the thieves), or the White Fang try to take it, which would help make Blake realize that the organization her father created is no longer quite so innocent after all. (And then they apprehend them, albeit with some probable reluctance from Blake.)
"Despite the circumstances, I can't help but be excited." Penny admits, having not even blinked since the container of dust was left. "I've never been on a stakeout before!"
Blake sighs, but before she could say anything the winds blow around the two of them, and they look up to see a Bullhead above, descending towards the shipment of dust. Penny had just contacted the authorities when the ship's doors opened, revealing a Faunus wearing a mask and black hood.
"It's them..." Blake says, disheartened. Penny reaches out to try to comfort her, when-
"Hurry up you animals! We're running on a clock here!" Penny looks back to the scene, a man wearing a bowler hat and white jacket stepping out from the Bullhead.
Blake frowns. "He's hu-"
"Roman Torchwick. Male. Mid-30's. Warrants for his arrests in three of the four kingdoms. Human." Penny recites, watching the man bark orders to the White Fang. "Strange. I didn't think the White Fang would let someone like him boss the faunus around like that..."
"They shouldn't." Blake growled, unsheathing her weapon.
Penny's eyes widened. "Blake, don't! You can't-" But Blake had already jumped away, towards the army of armed gunmen and a huntsman-level criminal.
"Oh dear..."
AN: Penny isn't an idiot, just woefully naive.
