Chapter Twenty-Seven – Maeve
The room looked the same, though Spencer couldn't recall how he got there. The books even seemed to smell the same way he remembered; he had sat at that same table in a dream years before, so he relaxed, figuring he was dreaming now.
As he turned in the chair to look behind him and at the walkway above, he heard her voice. "You've moved on, Spencer." Turning back around, he saw Maeve sitting at the table across from him and his eyes welled. She looked the same, even wore the same clothes the last time he dreamed about her, only a few months after she had been killed.
"Yes, I have. Susan's a wonderful woman and she makes me profoundly happy. I love her… and I'm going to marry her."
Maeve smiled and put her hand on his, and he could swear he felt her warmth. "I'm happy for you, Spencer. You need to know that. And don't feel bad for me. I showed you what was possible. You need to let me go. Susan will give you everything you could ever need or want, a lifetime of happiness, love, and a family. There's a quote by Joseph Campbell. If you feel yourself falling, dive. Be happy, Spencer. I know the two of you will have a long, happy life together. Love her. Remember... dive."
He watched as Maeve got up, but didn't go after her. She was right. She would always have a place in his heart, but it was time to let her go. And as she walked out of the room, she faded away. Closing his eyes, he leaned back in the chair and sighed.
When Spencer woke up, he was still smiling, feeling happy and calm, rationalizing the dream as his subconscious giving him permission to let Maeve go. Maybe that's the reason Jennifer was so upset. He had to let go of her, too. Perhaps it was she who wanted more from him. That seemed to make sense. When she was in the hospital, she told him if things were different. Well, things are different now. He chose to look ahead at what the future held with Susan, instead of what might have been or could be, with Jennifer, or anyone else.
The room was pitch dark and he could hear Susan softly breathing as she slept, snuggled against him. He kissed the back of her head and felt her shudder. And within minutes, he was asleep again. A peaceful, dreamless sleep.
