Chapter Twenty-Nine - Open Doors

Spencer remembered the pinch of salt while making coffee and Susan made enough protein shake for two. She got out the container of leftover fruit and a carton of juice from the day before, setting it on the counter, then a few croissants, setting them in the crock-pot and plugging it in near the stove to warm up.

She was startled and surprised to hear the basement door open. "Hello?"

It was Penelope. "Yes, hello. I'm here. Good morning. Coffee? I need coffee." She had no makeup on, her hair in low pigtails, and she wore a Georgetown t-shirt and gym shorts from the closet in the downstairs bedroom, and her wedge shoes. After setting her purse and bag on the table by the front door—with her clothes in it from the day before—she went back to the kitchen.

Susan filled a Wheeler Park & Rec promotional travel mug for her and set it on the counter with a spoon in front of the sugar jar.

Penelope sat down, poured sugar into the mug, stirring quickly. "Oh, my lovelies, when I came upstairs last night, all the lights were off, and the alarm was on. From the noises coming from your open bedroom door, I figured it probably wouldn't be a good idea to interrupt, so I went back down to the basement and slept in your guest suite. It's like being in a five-star hotel. Well… without the room service."

They both apologized for not remembering she was still there when they went to bed. Susan reached into the fridge for the container of leftover vegetarian pasta. She handed it to Penelope. "Would you like to take this for lunch?"

"Yes, this makes my day! I'm not angry at all. It gave me a chance to check out the guest room!" She laughed. "Now, I have to go home, apologize to Sergio, feed him, and get ready for work."

"I should have told you, with your security profile, you could ask Betty to disarm the alarm and unlock the door for you."

"I'll remember that… next time." Penelope grinned at Spencer, patting his cheek. "Have a great day, Hot Stuff." She asked Betty to disarm the alarm and unlock the door as she picked up her things. Spencer held the door open for her, and she gave him a fluttery wave of her fingers as she left...
