Chapter Thirty-Seven - A Small Wedding

At Steve's house, Bill hugged Spencer, then Susan. "I'm glad you're both here. Have a drink, enjoy yourselves. There are appetizers if you're hungry. I'll see you in a few minutes." He went out a patio door to the backyard.

They went to the bar set up in the dining room for a drink, then out to the backyard, looking around. It was tastefully decorated with flowers and vine garlands. In the shade of a large tree, four tables were arranged with a small table at one end and a portable dance floor set up in the middle. A string quartet played at the other end. To the right of the musicians, an arch with white chiffon fabric draped on it and a vine garland with flowers across the top and down each side.

After Spencer, Susan and the rest of the guests took their seats, the quartet started playing Canon in D by Pachelbel. Bill, Steve, and the officiant waited in front of the arch.

Rebecca walked up the aisle between the chairs and stood next to Bill. As they held hands, the music faded, and Spencer picked up Susan's hand, holding it in his. The officiant talked of love and the wonders of the universe. Two minutes later, he declared Bill and Rebecca were united in the bonds of matrimony.

The photographer took pictures of the ceremony, and later, pictures of the bride and groom. As he posed them with the family, he had Spencer stand next to his father. Susan was off to the side, and Bill asked her to stand with them, said she was part of the family now. Spencer held her against his side, smiling proudly.

Later, the bride and groom sat at the small round table facing their guests at the larger tables and the dance floor. There were toasts made by Steve, and then Spencer stood up to give a brief speech, dedicating it to his father, wishing the bride and groom a long, happy married life. He sat back down next to Susan and said quietly. "This is the kind of wedding I'd want, in case you were thinking about it."

"I was and I agree. It's perfect. Intimate, and elegant."

As the evening wound down, the newlyweds cut the cake, Spencer brought two plates with cake, set them on the table, and sat down. "The newlyweds are getting ready to leave after this. What if we go back to the hotel? We'll see them tomorrow... "

"Mmm. Again, great minds think alike."

They ate the cake and said their goodbyes, then waited in the foyer for one of the drivers to take them back to the hotel. Spencer slid his arms around Susan.

"Did you have a good time?"

"I did. It was a lovely wedding…"

In the dim light of their hotel room later, they were lying in bed; Susan, on her side, had her back against Spencer. She noticed how quiet he was and whispered, "Are you awake?"

"Yeah. I was… thinking. I need to ask you something. Could you turn over, please?"

Susan turned to face him. "What is it, Love?"

He kissed her. "Are you sure? About having a baby? And… are you sure about trying to get pregnant before we get married?"

"Yes. I'm sure I want to have a baby with you. It may not even happen right away. The thing is, we can't obsess about it. Put it out of your mind until it happens. Lizette and Andy became fixated, taking her temperature every day, with ovulation schedules, and charts. It took nearly a year after they got married, a brief squabble… and makeup sex, to finally conceive Tiana."

"Hmm. So, let's agree then, not to discuss it. Instead, we focus on having fun in California, the wedding, and… our lives, right?"

"Right. So… before we put the issue to rest, I should tell you something." His eyebrows rose, but he didn't say anything. Susan continued. "After she married Andy, Lizette tried to convince me to pick a guy, so that she and I could both be pregnant around the same time. I didn't, of course… I couldn't. Then she tried talking me into doing artificial insemination." His brows pulled together, and Susan laughed softly, shaking her head. "No. I didn't want to do that either. I couldn't have a child with some guy and not feel anything or raise a child on my own."

He slid his fingers gently over that spot under her ear and kissed her gently. "Thank you. I can't even begin to tell you how happy that makes me." Sighing, he turned onto his back, holding her against him…
