"Curious..." muttered Mr. Ollivander, looking inside the cauldron at a small, white crystal. "Very, very curious..."

Harry couldn't help himself. "What's curious?" he asked.

"In all of my research into crystal focuses, I've never heard of one being so white... or transparent."

"Is it a good thing?" asked Harry as he took the small crystal from the cauldron with two fingers.

"Oh, yes, Harry." said the old wand-maker. "It is a very, very good thing."

"So, the only step now is to infuse my magic in it?" asked Harry.

"Indeed. It should take quite a while so I suggest you sit down." said Mr. Ollivander, indicating the corner of the back store with his hand, where a chair was."

Harry nodded before he walked toward the chair. He sat down on it and took the small crystal with his two hands. The crystal was small enough that both hands nearly touched each other. Harry closed his eyes and willed his magic to go from his hands to the crystal. His heart jumped when he felt the crystal start accepting his magic. To avoid loosing focus, Harry stopped thinking about anything else other than focus his magic into the crystal. He faintly heard the small bell that came further in the shop to indicate that a new customer had just entered. It took nearly an hour before Harry felt the crystal become 'full' but, when he finally opened his eyes and looked at his hands, he was met with the sight of a bright, light-emitting purple crystal. He grinned.

Harry held in his hand the result of a month and a half of work. As he admired the result of his' and Mr. Ollivander's work, Harry began thinking back on the journey that brought him to that point. And it all began the night after he had watched the Star Wars trilogy with Hermione and Ron.

That night, after waking up from his nightmare, Harry wrote a lot of ideas on how a lightsaber could be built with both technology and magic. That night had mostly been used as a brainstorming session, where he threw dozens and dozens of different idea on paper. That same night, Harry also took the decision to go to the Leaky Cauldron and stay there until he could go to the Weasleys for the Quidditch World Cup. Early the next morning, before his relatives woke up, Harry packed his trunk and left Privet Drive. Thirty minutes later, he had a room rented in the famous wizarding inn.

Harry's first stop in Diagon Alley that day was Gringotts where he took out some money for his next purchase, which was in Flourish & Blotts. There, Harry bought many books on all the different ideas he had come up with the previous night. Once back in his room, he read the books while refining his idea in the meantime. Four weeks later, Harry had the prototype for his very first lightsaber, which was a mix of muggle technology, runes and enchantments. The problem was that it was missing something important for it to work.

The blade of the lightsaber was a solid beam of pure magic. Pure magic was something that was very hard to generate. Fortunately, there was a way to produce the blade that fitted with the rest of the design of the lightsaber. Unfortunately, it required a large magical crystal and the size it would need to be able to achieve the necessary power resulted in a crystal that was way too big to fit inside a lightsaber hilt. Because of that, Harry was in an impasse. He needed a magical crystal to magically power the lightsaber, but the size of it was too big. If Harry wanted to achieve his dream of building a working lightsaber, Harry needed to somehow make the crystal more compact while also keeping the same level of magical power. Harry didn't know what to do... until it hit him.

Magical crystals were focuses for magic. Who better to ask for help that someone who produced magical focuses every day?

So, shortly before his birthday, Harry entered Mr. Ollivander's store, and presented his project and ideas to the curious wizard. Mr. Ollivander had immediately agreed to help, citing that he had always wanted to study magical crystals into more details. Mr. Ollivander was also interested in helping Harry complete the lightsaber, if only for how innovative it was.

Their working together developed a unique friendship between the teenager and the ninety-years-old wizard. Harry was shocked when he learned that the famous Garrick Ollivander could make a sailor blush, although that side of him didn't come out often on the days his shop was open. It had been quite the surprise when Mr. Ollivander first swore in front of Harry. From time to time, the twos would make verbal spars to entertain each other.

So, every day for the following two weeks, Harry and Mr. Ollivander – who asked Harry to simply call him Garrick – worked on a new potion recipe for a new, smaller and improved magical crystal, which Harry had dubbed the Kyber Crystal after the crystal of the same name that powered lightsabers in the Star Wars universe.

For once, Harry had been able to put his natural talents for potions to good use. Harry had an unfortunate habit of dumbing down his work at school, something he had learned to do at the Dursleys. This habit had become so ingrained in Harry that, by the time he had arrived at Hogwarts, it had become second nature for him. It wasn't until November of that year that Harry realized he didn't have to hide his intelligence anymore but, by that point, he had become best friends with Ron and Hermione. Eleven-years-old Harry had feared that the first would ridicule him if he managed to top the grades of their year group while the second would take it as a personal insult. Since Harry had just gained them as friends and still felt insecure about it, he had decided to continue with his ruse.

But now? Harry was older and had gone through much with his two best friends. The idea that their friendship could be at risk simply because of his grades was laughable. Harry decided that, from this moment onward, he would begin working diligently and not dumb himself down. He would give Hermione a run for her money! They might even get a friendly rivalry out of it!

Looking back at the purple crystal in his hands, Harry realized something. It was probably best if Harry continued his charade for Potions. Snape would become unbearable if he began answering all of the man's question perfectly and did top-notch potions in class. It also wouldn't help if Snape decided to fail him in frustration. In the end, it didn't matter anyway, as long as he passed his fourth year. Then, the following year, it would be the O.W.L.s and those exams weren't controlled by Snape, so Harry would be able to do his best.

Harry snapped out of his musings when Mr. Ollivander entered the room. Evidently, he had just finished servicing a customer. "So, Harry," he said. "I see you are finished?"

Harry grinned. "Yep, it seems so." he said, showing the final crystal to the wand-maker.

Mr. Ollivander gently took the Kyber Crystal in his hand. "It emit light..." he said with some awe. "Amazing."

"I think we did a pretty good job, didn't we?" grinned Harry.

"It would appear so, Harry."

"Do you know why the crystal is purple? Since it was white before I infused my magic, I assume it's because of that but I don't understand why it would take on a specific colour."

"Like all magical focuses, crystals have a sentience. It is faint, but there. Some type of crystal are known for taking on a colour to represent the magic of the person they have been infused with. The meaning of the colours change with each type of crystal. For this one, the only way to know it's true meaning would be to discover the other colours and find their significance. If you do, please send me your notes. I would be very interested to read them."

"Of course." grinned Harry. "Now, there is only one thing left to do, and it's to see if the final, completed lightsaber works."

"Go in the backyard, Harry. I don't want you to damage the inside of my shop." said the wand-maker with amusement.

The backyard could barely be defined as such. What Mr. Ollivander called his backyard was actually a small rectangle the size of a parking lot that could only fit four regular-sized cars, which was surrounded by buildings. It only took a few seconds to walk from one end to the other. It wasn't big but it was more than enough for Harry to test his lightsaber. With his purple Kyber Crystal in one hand and his lightsaber hilt in the other, Harry entered the backyard.

The hilt of his lightsaber was rather simple. Early in the project, while he was still making plans and playing with ideas for the lightsaber, Harry went to a toy store and bought plastic replicas of Obi-Wan's lightsaber and both of Luke's blue and green ones. Unlike what the cashier at the store had probably believed, Harry had bought the toys not to play with them but to test how ergonomic the hilts were. Unfortunately for him, neither of the three felt right. Luke's blue lightsaber felt outright unbearable to hold with two hands while Obi-Wan's lightsaber and Luke's green ones were simply distracting. All three of them had the unfortunate problem of having a cube on one side of the hilt which made holding the lightsabers with two hands uncomfortable.

So, Harry had decided to take inspiration from the hilts of the movies while also diverging a lot from it. In the end, Harry's own lightsaber was much simpler. The hilt was simply a long, steel handle – which was painted black – with a rubber grip that covered nearly three quarters of the handle. The lightsaber had two buttons. One would ignite the blade in full power while the other – called training mode – would simply ignite it with a fraction of the power, enough to create a solid blade but not enough to cause more than bruises and slight burns to someone. The tip of his lightsaber was the only thing that was taken straight from the movies, the tip where the blade came from being very similar to Luke's lightsaber.

The final product was a black hilt which was slightly thinner than the ones from the movies while also slightly longer, which made using it much better for Harry.

Now in the backyard, he immediately put the purple Kyber Crystal inside of the lightsaber before making the final tweaks. Once he made sure that everything was as it should be, he closed the casing and screwed the small bolt on it. Then, taking the lightsaber with his two hands – and pointing the blade away from him – he pressed on the button.

With a hiss, a bright purple blade of light ignited from the lightsaber. Harry whooped in joy. He had done it! He had built a functional lightsaber!

Harry was grinning like a lunatic as he began doing some simple moves with his lightsaber. The way his lightsaber looked and sounded like was so similar to the ones in the movies that, inside, he couldn't help but felt like a child playing with his new toy. He knew how dangerous it was but he couldn't help but amuse himself.

While playing with the necessary runes, Harry realized that he could implement a lot more functionalities in his lightsaber than were seen in the movies. For instance, Harry's lightsaber could be summoned simply with the will of its maker, – or, more accurately, the will of the person whose' magic was infused in the lightsaber's Kyber Crystal – work under water, propel it's user forward like a weak broom and redirect spells that hit the blade wherever the one using the lightsaber wished.

As Harry messed around with his purple lightsaber, he decided to test its various capabilities. For that, he needed help. As Mr. Ollivander would probably never forgive him if he caused damage to his store, he pressed back on the button, powering down his lightsaber. The purple blade retracted with a hiss.

"Garrick!" he nearly yelled with amusement as he walked toward the front of the shop. "Where are you, Garrick, you crazy old basta- Oh, hello, Professor McGonagall!" he said smoothly. Harry had unintentionally stormed in the middle of a soon-to-be first-year muggleborn with long red hair trying to find her wand. The young witch was accompanied with the stern Professor McGonagall.

"Mr. Potter!" exclaimed the Deputy-Headmistress in shock, making Harry flush bright red. The young witch failed to hide her giggles behind one of her hands while Mr. Ollivander only chuckled behind his counter. "You're lucky you aren't at Hogwarts, young man, or I would give you detention for a month."

"Sorry, professor." he mumbled before he immediately fled for the back store, giggles and chuckles following him.

Two hours later, with the help of the wand-maker, Harry had tested everything he could with his lightsaber. Harry had Mr. Ollivander conjure blocks of all sort of materials to test how powerful the blade was. Harry was happy to see that his lightsaber could cut through practically anything. Harry then asked Mr. Ollivander to fire spells at him and, before he was ready, he had been transfigured into a hedgehog.

Harry growled to Mr. Ollivander – which wasn't very threatening – until he was transfigured back. The duo then proceeded to properly test the lightsaber. Harry was very pleased to see that he could redirect all the spells precisely where he wanted to. He even tried to redirect the weakest ones toward the wand-maker but, unfortunately, the man managed to either avoid them or shield from them.

At the end of the day, Harry shut down his lightsaber with pride before clipping it to his belt. It was a very happy young wizard who went to bed that night, enjoying a long, dreamless sleep for once.

A/N: Kyber Crystal colours will be inspired by those from Star Wars canon. These are my own notes for the colours and their meanings, something I wrote back in December 2020. It's somewhat inspired by the meanings from both Canon and Legends, but adapted for the Harry Potter universe. Some of these colours might overlap each other but it's only used as a guide for me to decide who will have what colour. ;)

White: Lightsaber with a Kyber krystal which wasn't given someone's magic or from someone magically weak (like squibs or muggles).

Blue: Lightsaber for someone who has a more physical focus than mental one. Blue is the colour for those either highly skilled in combat or with a great potential. More fitting to Light Wizards.

Green: Lightsaber for someone who has a more mental focus than physical one. Green is the colour for those that tend to be calm, wise and magically powerful. More fitting to Light Wizards.

Purple: Lightsaber for someone who has a good balance between physical/mental and light/dark. Purple is for those equally strong in magic and their combat ethics. More fitting to Grey Wizards.

Yellow: Lightsaber for someone more physical who would not hesitate to use his powers/abilities for the Good. Yellow is for those with unwavering persistence and relentless dedication to fighting forces of evil. More fitting to Grey Wizards.

Red: Lightsaber for someone who is into Dark Magic. Red reflect the corrupt sinister nature of its holder. More for a Dark Wizard than Light Wizard.
