The ride back home – as Harry would call it – had been more relaxing than he had expected. With Hermione engrossed in his notes and Ron and Sarah playing multiple games of chess, half of which were won by the soon-to-be first year, Harry had been able to get more than a few hours of sleep.
Harry was woken up about an hour before arrival so that the girls – or rather Hermione as Sarah was already wearing hers – could change into their uniforms. Once they were done, they switched places and Harry and Ron changed.
Their exit of the train was welcomed by a torrential downpour and heavy winds. The quadruplet immediately put on the hoods of their robes. The visibility was horrible and Harry couldn't even see the gates from where he was.
"First Years! First Years!" called Hagrid from further on the platform.
"Hi, Hagrid!" yelled Harry over the wind. Then, he looked at Sarah, who was looking at Hagrid with wide eyes, slightly afraid. "Don't worry about Hagrid." he said gently. "He might look threatening but he's nothing more than a big human teddy bear. You'll be safe with him." Sarah nodded to show she understood. She seemed more reassured.
"Harry! Ron! Hermione!" greeted Hagrid. "How are you?"
"We're fine!" said Hermione. "What about you?"
"Happy to begin another year at Hogwarts!" answered the very tall man. "And who's that?" he asked, looking at Sarah who was standing between them.
"That's Sarah, our new friend!" answered Harry with a smile toward the small red-head. "She's starting her first year at Hogwarts."
"Hi!" she said somewhat timidly.
"Nice to meet you, Sarah." said Hagrid, smiling kindly at her. "Well, it's time we go. First Years come here! Well, you three, see you there at the feast – if we don't drown on the way there!" he said with a chortle.
As Sarah and the First Years began to follow Hagrid away from the platform, Harry yelled "Sarah!" The witch turned around, looking at Harry. He could see that she was shivering. "Just be careful out there. Sailing with this weather... well, just be careful."
Sarah nodded and turned back toward her fellow First Years. Once she disappeared from view, Harry, Ron and Hermione began to walk toward the carriages.
Harry shook his leg to dislodge some water from his pants. The entire floor of the Great Hall was covered with a thin layer of water. Some teachers had tried to dry the students but the majority, which included Harry, Ron and Hermione, were still wet by the time the sorting started.
Harry glanced toward the front of the Great Hall. Only a few students were left to be sorted, which included Sarah. Their new friend was about half a head smaller than the rest of the students. She, like the rest of her age group, also looked like she had swum through the Great Lake rather than sailed it. Some of her red hair was stuck on her face and Harry had seen her brush it away more than once.
"Why is it so long?" muttered Ron quietly. "I'm starving."
"Me too." said Harry.
Hermione rolled her eyes. "Boys." she said.
Eventually, as Harry was staring at the ceiling, – which was showing heavy grey clouds and thunder – the only name he had been waiting to hear was called.
"Wintory, Sarah!" said Professor McGonagall. Looking back toward the front, Harry could see that Sarah was the only remaining student. With a timid glance toward the student body, she approached the stool and sat on it. Professor McGonagall then put the Sorting Hat on her head, where it sunk up to her nose. It was a rather amusing sight, he thought.
Sarah and the Hat seemed to have a conversation. The young girl's shoulders tensed for a moment before they dropped in relief. "GRYFFINDOR!" shouted the Hat.
As one, Harry, Ron and Hermione rose on their feet and began applauding. McGonagall removed the hat from her head and Sarah trotted happily toward her fellow Gryffindor First Years. When she looked at them, Harry sent her a grin and thumbs-up, making her beam.
Finally, the Gryffindors stopped cheering once she had sat down. As Harry and his friends took back their seats, Dumbledore raised on his feet and announced the beginning of the feast. Almost as soon as the food appeared on the table, Harry and Ron immediately threw themselves at it and filled their plates to the rim. They began eating with gusto.
"Can't you boys eat slower?" said Hermione, looking at them with disgust. Harry and Ron glanced at each other, their mouths full of food, and shrugged. Hermione rolled her eyes.
The feast came and went, and with it went Harry and Ron's hunger. Harry was still munching on his last bite of treacle tart when Dumbledore rose again to begin the announcements. Dumbledore began with the usual, which were the list of forbidden items Filch had wrote, the Forbidden Forest that was out-of-bounds to students, and the visits to Hogsmeade for students third-year or higher.
"It is also my painful duty to inform you that the Inter-House Quidditch Cup will not take place this year."
"WHAT!?" yelled Harry, Ron and many other students across the Hall. "No Quidditch!?" Harry said to Ron. "Why are they doing this!?" said Ron. They missed Hermione's look of exasperation.
"This is due to an event that will be starting in October -" began Dumbledore, and Harry narrowed his eyes. His senses were telling him that something bad was going to happen. "And continuing throughout the school year, taking up much of the teacher's time and energy – but I am sure you will all enjoy it immensely."
"I have a bad feeling about this." muttered Harry quietly, just enough for Ron and Hermione to hear him. The three friends glanced at each other with worry.
"I have the great pleasure in announcing that this year, Hogwarts will have the honour of hosting a very exciting event over the coming months, an event that has not been held for over a century. It is my very great pleasure to inform you that the Triwizard Tournament will be taking place at Hogwarts this year."
Hermione gasped, as if she had just been told horrible news. While everyone around the Great Hall began talking excitingly, Harry and Ron turned toward Hermione to know what had horrified her so much. Harry didn't know what the Triwizard Tournament was, but he didn't feel good about it. Hermione's reaction just helped make him even more tense.
As if reading her friends' minds, Hermione answered their untold question. "The Triwizard Tournament was a competition between the school of Hogwarts, Durmstrang and Beauxbatons. The Tournament featured three tasks that each Champion of the respective schools would have to go through to win. It was cancelled because..." There, she stuttered, as if she had a hard time saying it.
"Cancelled because of what?" asked Ron.
"Because of the death toll." she said. Harry and Ron looked at each other and Harry groaned.
"I knew I had a bad feeling about this. Somehow, I'll probably be roped into participating in the damn thing." he said with a sigh.
"Well I hope not!" said Hermione. "You aren't even seventeen! The other champions are bound to know more magic, and the Tasks will be designed accordingly."
"Then we should practice and learn spells, together, just in case." said Ron wisely.
Harry nodded. "And I'll help you build lightsabers. You never know, it might be useful. Mine will certainly be if I have to participate in the bloody thing.
'Hopefully I won't need it.' he thought. He didn't really want to reveal his lightsaber to the entire world. Currently, only Ron, Hermione and Sarah knew about it. Fleur and Gabrielle Delacour had seen it but they hadn't asked questions. Since it had been very dark at the time, they probably did not see the hilt and simply assumed he had used a spell.
"How long did it take to build?" she asked. "We could do it this weekend if we have enough time."
"Both the hilt and potions take a few hours by themselves..." Harry answered before taking a decision. "We will be build your hilts Saturday then make the potion for the crystals on Sunday." Ron and Hermione nodded. They would be ready if Harry was chosen as Champion.
Harry knew the moment he entered the common room that both Hermione and Ron couldn't wait any longer to begin building their lightsabers. Both were already wide awake, sitting together on one of the sofas. Hermione was currently reading one of his notebooks – which he hadn't even realized was missing from his trunk – while Ron was talking to her. The moment they spotted him, they looked at him with expectation and excitement.
"Let me guess. You want to start now?" he asked. Their sheepish smiles gave him the answer he was looking for. "Let's eat first, then we can do." he said.
As they were eating their breakfasts, Harry began talking about the construction process.
"The first thing you will need to do is build the hilt itself. That's one of the most important parts, second only to the creation of your crystal."
"Wait, there are electronics in the lightsaber?" asked Hermione. Harry nodded. "How does it work? I thought technology and magic were incompatible!"
Harry shrugged. "The power of the lightsaber come from the crystal. I simply put energy conversion runes around the crystal so that the magic of it would be converted to electricity... what?" he added when he saw Hermione gaping at him.
"There are runes that can do that?" she nearly shrieked, attracting the attention of others.
Harry shushed her down. "I simply used a rune to convert magic into lightning! Lightning is electricity, after all. While the crystal is not powerful enough to generate a lightning bolt thanks to the runes, it's enough to power the lightsaber and, as long as the power is contained – which it is – it works flawlessly."
Hermione was about to ask or add something else when she was interrupted by a shy "Hello!" from behind him.
"Morning Sarah!" greeted Harry cheerfully. "How was your first week at Hogwarts?"
"It was great!" she said as she sat down on Harry's right.
"What are your favourite classes?" asked Hermione almost immediately.
"Charms." she said, giggling. "Professor Flitwick is very funny."
"That he is." said Ron fondly.
"I also like Herbology a lot. I always liked gardening at home so I really like that class. I hate Potions, though."
"You and everyone else." said Harry.
"Did you make any friends in your year?" asked Ron.
Sarah nodded. "My dorm-mate Natalie McDonald. She's a heavy sleeper though so she won't wake for another hour or two."
The three Fourth Years continued to talk with Sarah while they finished breakfast. Once Ron had finished, which was a few minutes after his friends, he immediately rose from his seat, making Harry chuckle. "Excited to start much?" he asked.
"Start what?" asked Sarah. Harry froze and nearly cursed himself. He didn't know how to answer. On one hand, he could simply lie and say something like 'Homework' but Harry didn't want to. He didn't like lying in general and, for some reasons, it seemed worse to do so to someone like Sarah. On the other hand, he could simply tell her the truth, trusting her to keep it for herself, but this reminded him of her reaction on the train. She had looked as excited as Ron had been. He had no doubts she would ask if she could build one herself and, while he didn't want to disappoint her, he didn't think it was a good idea to have an eleven-years-old Star Wars fan possess a fully working lightsaber.
Harry did some fast thinking. He wasn't about to lie to her, so he decided to find something that could appease her. An idea came. While Ron and Hermione would be building their own lightsabers, Harry could build a practice one! He would simply need to tweak the design to remove the full-powered mode from it. He could even decrease the power output even further by using a white crystal! With this practice lightsaber, he could teach her how to use it and, once he felt she was ready, he would show her how to build one. Yes, that was a good idea.
"Remember the secret I shared on the train?" he asked.
Sarah's eyes widened. "You're going to build -"
"Yes." interrupted Harry.
"Can I -"
"No, sorry." said Harry. Sarah's face fell. Even thought he had expected it, it hurt him to see her reaction. "I'm sorry but it's simply too dangerous to simply give you one."
"I-I understand." she said, looking down at the table. Harry could see the corners of her eyes turn moist. 'Damn it!' he thought. Why did this make him feel like someone had grabbed his heart and was squeezing it? "Tell you what," he said. "I'll build a practice one. Once I'm sure you can use it without injuring yourself, then I might teach you how to build one, alright?"
"Really?" she asked with hope. Harry nodded. "Thank you!" she said before throwing her arms around his neck and hugged him. Harry's eyes widened in surprise. He patted her back awkwardly, not really knowing what to say... or do.
"Well..." he said, making her remove her grip from him. "Ron, Hermione and I got to go. We'll see you later." he said as he rose from his seat. Harry walked out of the Great Hall followed by Ron and Hermione. The moment they passed the doors, Hermione was on his case.
"What just happened?" she asked.
"What do you mean?" tried Harry innocently.
"You know very well what I'm talking about, Harry Potter." she said, her eyes narrowed. "Why did you tell Sarah that we were going to build lightsabers, knowing full well she would ask one for herself? And why did you promise her to show her how to build one later?"
"First, I didn't want to lie to her. She was already in on the secret so it's not like it was necessary. Also, I promised I should show her IF I believed she was proficient enough in combat to use one without injuring herself."
"But why? Why are you dragging her in? She's only eleven, after all! She didn't go through everything we did. She's still a child, both physically and mentally! She doesn't nor should she need to know how to handle a lightsaber!"
"Look," said Harry, loosing patience. "I'm not sure why but I have a feeling she's trustworthy and that I should help and guide her."
"A feeling..." she said, not sounding very convinced.
"Yes." he said. "Or I'm being guided by the Force." he joked. Ron let out a snicker.
"But..."
"Hermione, just drop it." said Ron. "I agree with Harry. She'll probably end up close to us either way so is it not better for her to know how to defend and handle herself in a fight in case she get attracted in our troubles?"
Hermione's shoulder sagged. "I guess you are right." she said. "I just don't like the idea that Sarah – or anyone her age – might need some training to survive."
"Neither do I. But, like I said, I feel like I should trust and guide her. I can't really explain." he said. "If we were able to go through the protections of the Philosopher's Stone at her age, I trust her to learn how to fight with a lightsaber."
"Now, all there is left for you to do is to infuse your magic in your respective crystals." said Harry. All three of them had a small, white Kyber Crystal in their hands. While Harry was done with his', Hermione and Ron still had to complete the final step. "It help to sit in a comfortable position. You will need to flow your magic from your hands to the crystal. Don't worry, it's easier than it sounds."
"I'm curious what colour I'll get." said Hermione. "Mr. Ollivander said that there were multiple colours we could get, right?"
"Yep." said Harry. "And only purple has been discovered so far." he said.
As Hermione and Ron infused their respective crystals, Harry made the final touches to the training lightsaber he was building for Sarah. Harry had kept it simple for the hilt of the lightsaber. It was a simple silver-coloured steel hilt with a rubber grip like on his own. There was also only one button, as there were no 'full-powered' mode.
After Harry placed the white crystal in the hilt, – and bolted the casing – Harry turned it on. A bright white blade of magic rose from the lightsaber. He did multiple tests with the new blade. As he had planned, the white lightsaber was much less powerful than his purple one. When testing against conjured materials, the white lightsaber could not cut through any metals. It was able to cut through wood but it took quite some time to do. Harry even needed to keep the white blade on the wood for a few seconds for it to even catch fire in the first place. It satisfied him. The blade would be able to be used without really injuring anyone. It would create bruises and burns but those could be dealt with easily at the Hospital Wing. Better than loosing a whole limb.
The end of his tests coincided with the end of Ron and Hermione's task. "We're done!" called Hermione as she stared at her green Kyber Crystal.
"Green! Just like Luke, then! What about you, Ron?" asked Harry. Ron opened his palm, revealing a blue Kyber Crystal. "Blue, like Obi-Wan and Luke's father Anakin. At least you two have colours from the movies." he joked.
"I like it!" said Ron. "It was my favourite lightsaber colour."
"So purple, green and blue." said Hermione excitingly as he wrote down on a roll of parchment. Hermione had begun writing her own notes since they had begun building her lightsaber the previous day. "I wonder what are the other colours. There's probably a few others that haven't been discovered yet."
"Since the colour depend on our magic and personality, there's must be a colour for bastards like Voldemort who are dark and cold. Hey, it might even be red like Darth Vader's lightsaber!"
"I honestly hope to never find out." said Hermione.
"You're probably right." he said. "Well, let's finish your lightsabers, then!"
Ron and Hermione's hilts were very similar to Harry's, though there were a few differences. While Harry had painted his hilt black, neither of his friends had done the same. They both kept the original silver colour. As for the other differences, Hermione's hilt wasn't as straight and cylindrical as Harry's. The design of her lightsaber was slightly more complex, with some parts more wide than the others. Ron had kept his design relatively simple and similar to Harry's, except that he had forgone the rubber grip. Ron had instead added horizontal grooves to the centre of the hilt, similar to the upper-part of Luke's green lightsaber. As for the rest, it was relatively the same.
Ron was the first one to put his Kyber Crystal inside of his hilt. Even thought he was excited to test his lightsaber, he waited for Hermione to finish so that they could do their first ignition at the same time. Once Hermione had bolted her hilt, her green Kyber Crystal comfortably placed inside, she made a sign to Ron. They both pressed the button of their lightsaber.
Blue and a green blades of light rose from their hilts. All three friends grinned. Their lightsabers were complete.
