Ron and Hermione were bouncing in happiness. Their brand new lightsabers were clipped to their belts and hidden under their robes. Harry had forced them to do so knowing they wouldn't be able to keep their hands off of them and would attract the attention of others otherwise.
Like his two friends, Harry also had a lightsaber clipped to his belt. It wasn't the only lightsaber he had on his person however. The second one, the one with the white blade, was currently in a pocket inside of his robes. He was intending on giving it to Sarah sometime in the following week to begin her training. Unfortunately, that presented a challenge.
To train Sarah, his two friends and himself in lightsaber combat, Harry needed a safe and spacious location to do so. His first thought had simply been to use the grounds but he had remembered that he wanted to keep the existence of the lightsabers secret. Practising outside with lightsabers beaming coloured light everywhere was a very bad way to ensure privacy. So, Harry had to find something else. Unfortunately, nothing had come to mind yet.
When faced with this problem, Harry's first reaction had been to ask for the Weasley twins, who knew the castle better than anyone else... But, it wasn't the case, wasn't it? The Weasley twins didn't know as much of the castle as the staff. Most of their knowledge came from the Marauder's Map and, as brilliant as it was, it was still an enchanted object created by students who had attended the school for only less than a decade. The staff was bound to know much more than any students.
However, for obvious reasons, asking the professors for a room to practice lightsaber combat was very much out of the equation. For similar reasons, he couldn't ask a ghost. That left the House-Elves. From what he had gathered, House-Elves could be found in the kitchen and, to find the kitchen, Harry had to ask the Weasley twins.
It was funny how Harry was back at his starting point.
This was what he was planning to do. While his two best friends were trying – and failing – not to gush about their new lightsabers, Harry was thinking of a way to approach Fred and George to learn where the kitchens were. Well, approaching them would be easy. He just didn't know if he had to bribe them to get his answer or not...
"What are we doing here, Harry?" asked Hermione. Currently, he, Hermione, Ron and Sarah were standing in front of a tapestry of trolls and ballerinas on the seventh floor. It had only been earlier in the day that Ron and Hermione had completed their lightsabers and Harry knew they were itching to try them out. It was why Harry had led them to this specific place. So far, only Sarah seemed to suspect what was going on judging by the excitement displayed on her face. Thankfully, she had refrained from asking questions.
"So, I was looking for a room big enough so that we could practice with our you-know-whats, and a kind house-elf lead me to this!"
"Uh, there's nothing there, Harry." said Ron. Harry only smiled mischievously before he walked three times in front of the tapestry. 'I need a place to learn and practice lightsaber combat.' he thought as he went back and forth.
Earing a gasp, he turned around. His three companions were staring at the wall opposite of the tapestry with shock in their eyes. Where had previously been a blank wall was now a large set of double doors. Grinning, Harry opened the doors, revealing a large room with a high ceiling and polished wooden floor. It looked very much like a gymnasium from a muggle school. His friends entered the room before Harry closed the doors.
"That's amazing..." whispered Hermione with awe. "How does it works?"
"I can explain to you in details later but, to make it simple, it's a room that take the form of whatever you want. I asked for a place to practice lightsaber combat and the room gave me this."
"So, we're really doing lightsaber combat!?" shrilled Sarah in excitement.
Harry smiled. "Yep. Speaking of which." he said before grabbing something inside his robes and pulling it out. Sarah stared wide-eyed at the silver-coloured lightsaber Harry had in his hand.
"Sarah," he said very seriously. "I'm putting a lot of thrust in you. This lightsaber, it's not a toy. The reason I've created those things was because I, Ron and Hermione have been in more danger than anyone else at school. I've invented those to give myself and my friends more than one way to defend themselves.
"This lightsaber I'm giving you, it's a training one. It won't be able to cause any serious injuries to someone but it will still hurt. I'm not giving this to you so that you can play with it or – worse – use it to bully others. Something is telling me to thrust you and to teach you, so don't make me regret my decision. This lightsaber and your training must stay an absolute secret, understand?"
"Yes, Harry." said the red-haired girl solemnly. Harry smiled and gave her the lightsaber. Looking at it with awe, Sarah grabbed it and pointed it upward. She sent a questioning glance toward Harry, asking weather or not she could ignite it. He nodded and Sarah pressed the button. A bright white blade of light came out of the hilt with a humm.
"Then, I make you, Sarah Wintory, my Padawan." he said.
Sarah grinned proudly. "I will not disappoint you, Master."
Sarah was in pain and panicking. She had come so close to saving Hermione! Her older friend was currently two rooms away, unconscious and bleeding. Unfortunately, before she had been able to enter it to find Hermione, she had been caught in a fight with a strange wizard. She had been told that Hermione had been captured by the Sith Darth Postor. With her Master unavailable, Sarah had gone to the hideout alone.
The layout was rather simple. In front of her had been a row of six rooms, all guarded with something. In the first room, Sarah had been forced to fight four droids who fired blaster shots at her. The first shot had come so quick that it had taken her by surprise, hitting her in the left leg. Thankfully, she had reacted fast enough to block and redirect the following three shots toward the droids. She had then run toward the last one standing and cut it in half. Once she had destroyed them all, she sighted something strange. The droids disintegrated and turn into mist – almost like steam – before simply vanishing.
In the second room, Sarah was met with a very tall mountain troll. She had been forced to duck right away when the troll brought its club to her, missing her by inches and smashing down the ground where she had been standing. This move had sent a bolt of pain through her injured leg, making her wince. She immediately swung her white lightsaber to the troll's leg but the lightsaber did no more damage than a sharp kitchen knife. The troll yelled in pain as the lightsaber created a cauterized cut on its leg.
She hadn't known what to do. Her lightsaber had barely made a dent in the troll's hide! She tried to remember her Master's teachings. His voice flowed through her mind...
"Your lightsaber is not the key to everything, Sarah. You must not rely on only one of your weapons. Sometimes, a good flick of the wand can be as useful in combat, if not more." A spell! She had to do a spell! But which one? Sarah pressed the button to power down her lightsaber and she attached it back to her belt. Then, as she ducked another swing of the club from the troll, she took her wand out.
She had been observing the troll's attack patterns when she noticed something. Each time the troll attacked, it first brought its club over its head. That was it! She knew what to do! Sarah raised her wand and pointed it at the club just as the troll charged for another attack.
"Wingardium Leviosa!" she shouted. The troll brought down its hand to strike her with the club – except that the club didn't follow! It continued to levitate over its head. Shocked, the troll looked up and stared at the club, confused. Sarah released her hold on the club and it fell back down, straight at the troll's head. The troll was immediately knocked out and fell back on the ground, unmoving. Then, just like the droids of the room before, it faded into a mist before disappearing.
Satisfied, Sarah had gone to the third room. The moment she noticed the guards of the room, she shrieked. It was spiders. Five big, enormous spiders the size of dogs! They were disgusting! Then, the closest one to her charged. She froze. She had no idea what to do! She knew no spells that could harm a giant spider, so it left her lightsaber. It was almost by instinct that she grabbed it, ignited it and slashed down the spider in half. It was only then that she regained her bearings and realized where she was. She took a defensive stance as the spiders charged. One by one, she gave them the same fate as the first spider, and cut them in half.
Once she cleared the room, she moved to the fourth one. There, she was met with a strange creature. It reminded her of a ghost, except that it was wearing a cloak and wasn't transparent. It looked like a floating black cloak. She had no idea what that was. Under it, she spotted a dead unicorn. Then, without warning, she felt a pain to her forehead.
She nearly started crying when she felt it. She certainly fell to her knees, gasping. The hooded figure started floating toward her. As she was on her knees, trying to breathe and not to cry, she heard the voice of her Master, as if he was speaking to her. "Be strong, Sarah! Be strong!"
With a new determination, she pushed herself back on her feet just in time to duck an attack from the thing, wincing one again because of her injury. The thing had lunged itself at her. Sarah immediately brought her white lightsaber up as the thing began to charge once again. When it was close enough, she cut down.
To her surprise, the cloak immediately deflated and fell down to the ground the moment her lightsaber touched it. It reminded her of Obi-Wan's defeat at the hands of Darth Vader. Figuring she had finished with the guard of this room, she walked toward the exit.
Just before she approached the door, a large wall of fire appeared, blocking the way. Sarah immediately let out a 'eep' and jumped back. When she turned around, it was to see an odd-looking man standing in front of a mirror. A second wall of fire was separating them. Then, the man took out his wand and began firing at her. Sarah immediately brought her lightsaber up to block the spells before redirecting them toward the wizard.
To her surprise, the wizard wasn't hit by the spells as he simply moved to avoid them. It caught her off-guard, which allowed the wizard to land a hit. The hit sent her lightsaber flying across the room. Sarah immediately felt pain to her left arm, as if someone had hit it with a baseball bat. She let out a whimper as tears began leaking out from the combined pain of her leg, arm and forehead. Then, before she could defend herself, another spell hit her, this time in the chest. She fell down on her knees and hands and immediately began crying.
The odd-looking wizard immediately stopped firing spells before turning into mist. The pain on her forehead disappeared with it. The walls lowered around her, offering a view of the much larger Room of Requirement. Before the walls had completely lowered, someone was already approaching, casting charms at her. Immediately, she was relieved of most of the remaining pain, thought there was still a hint of it on both her arm, chest and leg.
"Are you alright?" asked a voice. It was Harry. Sarah nodded. Even thought she barely felt the pain anymore, she still felt unable to talk. As if guessing her state of mind, Harry grabbed her in a hug. Sarah immediately burrowed in his chest.
The fourteen-years-old wizard and eleven-years-old witch stayed in their embrace for the next few minutes as Sarah calmed down. Eventually, Harry spoke again. "Are you alright now?"
"Yes... thank you." she said, slowly leaning away from Harry. "I wish I had been able to go to the end." she muttered.
"You went up to the fourth room! It's a great achievement, Sarah!" he said with pride, beaming at her. "I wouldn't have been able to go as far as you did at your age, especially not alone! You did great today, trust me." he said with a smile. Sarah smiled back at him. "Now, why don't you go take a shower to clean up that sweat? I doubt Professor McGonagall would be happy with us if I let you go welcome the students of Durmstrang and Beauxbatons like that."
"Probably not." said Sarah with a giggle.
"Go do that, then. I'll go stop Ron and Hermione and send them toward the showers too... Hopefully, they won't take a shower together, if you get my meaning." he said with a wink. Sarah let out a laugh.
Ron and Hermione's attraction toward each other was possibly the worst-kept secret in Gryffindor, to the point where everyone except the two of them knew about it. Harry, something Sarah noticed early on, really loved teasing them subtly about it. Most of the time, Ron would be oblivious to it, thought Hermione's pink cheeks easily told them she understood what he was saying.
As Sarah entered the female showers conjured by the Room of Requirement, Harry walked to the other side of the room. For that afternoon, Harry had divided the room in two. The right half of the room had been used for Sarah's test, something he had designed to see how well she could do in situations he himself had encountered at her age. The left side of the room had been given to Ron and Hermione so that they could spar and practice in the meantime. Both halves of the rooms had been hidden from the other by a curtain.
As he expected, the moment he crossed the curtain to the other side, he found Ron and Hermione sparing with their lightsabers. Blue was clashing with green, creating yellow sparks of light.
As far as Harry could tell, Ron was currently in the middle of a series of attacks while Hermione was trying to defend against him. Unfortunately, he made a mistake. Ron put all of his weight into a thrust toward Hermione's chest with his blue lightsaber, which was blocked and redirected just in time by Hermione's, who pushed it back to her right. Ron was now left wide open for an attack, still bent forward from his thrust. Not wasting an opportunity, Hermione swung her green lightsaber from her left toward Ron's right ribs, but Ron dodged by jumping backward. Not leaving him time to readjust, she continued attacking. It was now Ron who was defending and Hermione who was attacking.
It was pretty interesting to watch. His two friends had come out a long way from where they had started. Harry could still remember Ron and Hermione's first spars. She had been the one to struggle the most at the beginning. While Ron had been able to somewhat hold his own, Hermione had been too focused on how she should be using and handling her lightsaber to offer any proper defence. Harry had quickly realized that Hermione's problem was that she was thinking things way too much, leaving her no time to react to sudden actions from an opponent. Harry had thankfully managed to snap her out of it.
Taking two fingers to his mouth, he whistled, making them slow down. With the grace of training fighters, Ron and Hermione slowly took a few steps away from each other, both in defensive stances before they shut down their respective lightsabers. Harry spoke. "Time to shower! Professor McGonagall awaits us in an hour to welcome the foreign students with the rest of Gryffindor!" he said.
"Already?" asked Hermione, startled. "I feel like we've only been here for a short period of time." she said before she walked toward the girls' showers.
"So?" asked Ron as he and Harry walked toward their own showers. "How did Sarah do in your test?"
"She did rather brilliantly, much better than I had expected." said Harry with pride. "Sarah got up to the fourth room before she was stopped."
"Fourth room... that's the one with the Quirrell-like figure, right?"
"Yep." said Harry. The first four rooms of Harry's "Five-Rooms Trial" – the sixth one simply being the finish line – was based on scenarios Harry had encountered through his years back in the magical world, thought with the difficulty dialed down. It was something that was made possible thanks to the magic of the Room of Requirement.
The first room was based on the situation Harry found himself in during the Quidditch World Cup, when he had faced the four Death Eaters to save the Delacour sisters. Unlike what had happened to Harry, the first room did not have the challenge of protecting two lives nor did it send lethal, dark magic toward the Jedi-in-training. There was also the fact that the "droids" – which were simply disguised animated mannequins conjured by the room – were simply shooting powerful stinging hexes. Enough to temporarily incapacitate someone but not enough to really cause injuries.
The second room hosted the challenge that was closest to what it was inspired of: a mountain troll. This was based on what Harry, Ron and Hermione had faced on Halloween 1991. This challenge might even have been harder to go through than reality as Harry was sure a real lightsaber would easily be able to cut through a troll's flesh, something the white, training lightsabers couldn't do. Harry had kept most resistance on purpose, allowing the training lightsaber to cause only light injuries to force Sarah to use her wand and the magic she had learned instead, like Ron had done all those years ago.
The third room was based on Harry and Ron's encounter of Aragog and his colony in the Forbidden forest. Once again, the challenge of the room had been dialed down, only having a small, limited number of small accromentulas, something that hadn't been the case in the middle of that colony.
The fourth room was based on Harry's two encounters with Voldemort-possessed Quirrell in his first year. The challenge of the room also had the distinction of having two phases. The first phase was based on Harry's encounter in the Forbidden Forest, when Quirrell had been drinking unicorn blood. The second was a loose representation of the confrontation at the end of the year, when Harry had found the stuttering professor standing in front of the Mirror of Erised. Of course, Professor Quirrell had never fought him or sent curses at him, unlike his challenge. This one was mostly an original creation, with Harry imagining how that confrontation could have been like had Quirrell used his wand from afar and not simply tried to strangle him.
This challenge was the first real challenge, from Harry's perspective. The first three rooms were relatively simple for someone of his age, skills and experience but the fourth room was a challenge for him too. Harry knew that Sarah wouldn't have gone through that room that easily, since he himself had some difficulty clearing it. He hadn't expected her to do so either but he was curious to see how far she could go.
The fifth room offered a completely unique challenge. Had Sarah somehow managed to clear the fourth room, she would have ended-up face to face with non-other than Darth Postor himself! (Who was really a disguised Harry.) At first, he had thought about putting a giant snake with a lightsaber-resistant hide to simulate his fight against Slytherin's basilisk but even Harry knew that it was just too much. Instead, he had put himself in the room, offering a scenario where Sarah would have been confronted by a Dark Lord of the Sith.
If Sarah had somehow bested him, she would have entered the sixth room, which simply contained a small silver medal Harry had made. That medal would had been a gift to congratulate her on beating all of his challenges.
Of course, he thought with a grin, Harry was also working on a twelve-room version for Ron, Hermione and himself. This 'Twelve-Rooms Trial' would be much more complex and challenging, featuring challenges imagined by not only himself, but Ron and Hermione as well. To make things even harder, the three wouldn't tell their challenges to the others, and their order would be random.
This, Harry had decided, would become the first version of the trials of Jedi knighthood. It would be interesting to go through.
