Hey everyone,
Well, 2020 seems to be the year of new stories. You've all read Master Yen Sid And Henrietta Potter – both of which I intend to keep working on alongside all of my other stories – and now this one has started hitting my muse with a sledgehammer – or should I say the Hulk's fist. And to be honest, I have been wanting to write a true HP-Avengers story for the longest time, basically since I started watching Marvel Movies with the Captain being my first.
I just never did so because I kind of like Harry being born in 1980 and going to Hogwarts in 1991, but putting Tony's tech in the 90's never sat well with me. I have often considered just moving Harry's date of birth up ten years to 1990, but in the end, I decided to just accept the whole thing. I mean, a world that basically lives with Victorian beliefs and customs hiding amongst technology-loving Muggles is possible, so why not this?
Exactly, so let's move on to a few basic things about this story. It's centered on Harry's Fifth – I really have a thing with starting stories in that year these days, don't I?Hey evj It's going to be mostly from Harry's POV, with a switch to that of various other characters, most probably the Avengers and Fury, from time to time. Harry's backstory and how it's linked with Marvel will be shared quite early on. Oh, and this story will have James Potter and Albus Dumbledore bashing.
Shocker,
Venquine1990
PS. I am not going to go into descriptions of any of the characters. Both Harry Potter and Marvel are so bloody popular, I don't see any reason to keep doing so every time I start a new story, unless I use the less popular characters or create OC's. Just so we're clear on that.
Shield And Magic
Chapter 01
Calling and Explaining
13th of August 1995
Grimmauld Place, London
Harry's POV
"Ron, hold on a moment, I – I need to talk to you." I say, knowing I need to do this, but hesitant about it all the same. "No, you've let these doubts of yours keep you from doing this for long enough. You've had the last two to three years to decide to do this and you kept using excuses not to. You know what the Ancient One said when you met her after your eleventh birthday; you would do this in either two or four years.
It's been four years, so get to it." The voice in my head that tells me all this while Ron falters in opening our bedroom door sounds like a strange mix of my own, Sirius', Remus and Director Fury's, as if the four of practiced this speech in front of some kind of recording machine and I am now having that recording play out inside my mind. I shake my head at this, knowing that regardless of all that, the voices are right and my friend closes the door again.
"Is everything alright, Harry?" He asks and I sigh, looking away as I say: "Ron, it's – there's – I've – heh –.""Take your time, mate. Maybe we can discuss this after breakfast." But I shake my head and say: "No, once we've eaten your mum's not going to leave me to a moment of my own, let alone a second alone with Sirius. She's been like that all week.
Besides, I – I do want to discuss my topic with her and the rest of your family, but – I want to gauge a reaction first, yours if you don't mind." Ron had looked a little troubled and uncomfortable when I mentioned how his mother has been trying to interfere with my godfather and I interacting, but a look of awe and humble amazement is now on his face and he says: "Gauge away, mate. I'm all ears." This makes me smile gratefully and I say:
"Be warned, this is kind of a long explanation, but I will try to simplify and summarize as much as I can, okay?" Ron gives a grateful nod at this, which I know is due to his love for food and need to go downstairs for breakfast. I feel touched at the fact that my best friend is willing to ignore his personal desires for my need to talk with him and start my talk: "Okay, to start at the beginning, I need to take you back to the forties, just not the war with Grindelwald.
You see at the same time that Grindelwald was trying to make Muggles submit to wizards and help Wizards come out of hiding – as he called it – there were one other war and one semi-war raging as well. One was what Muggles call World War II – don't ask about 1 unless you want to skip breakfast all-together." Ron nods hurriedly and claps his mouth closed, yet I grin at him as I think: "Just making sure I can skip the pointless facts and history stories."
"The other was a semi-war, because it was between an organization called Hydra, which at first was the Research division for the Nazi's, which was what the Germans called themselves during WW II, but who divided and became their own organization sometime in 1942 and a small part of the American Army, specifically one man named Steve Rogers, though most Muggles know him under his alias, Captain America."
Ron is looking at me with more awe and amazement than I have ever seen on his face when he listens to someone's story and while I think: "Eat your heart out, Binns." I don't let this thought distract me and I say: "You see, during the war, a scientist – really smart researcher – created this serum that basically, according to what I learned, improved everything about a person. If they had muscles, they got buffed, if they had brains, they became a genius.
The problem was that this serum didn't just affect a person's body and mind; it affected their morals and their conscious as well. And the first person to test this serum turned from bad to pure evil. I think if I had to compare it, I would say he turned from – ehm – Draco Malfoy straight on to Voldemort himself." Ron gapes at me and I suddenly notice that the twins have joined us, yet they are watching me with the same awed fascination.
"Luckily for humanity all over, the scientist had a conscience. So he fled to the States. There he funded a project that many men joined in on, one of them being Steve Rogers. However, when he did, Steve was basically a 20 year old young man – who had the same scrawny looks as I did when you and I first met. And he had several illnesses, like asthma and others as well. By all means, he never should have been accepted into the army."
"Then why did he?""Because the scientist wasn't looking for physical strength, he was looking for someone who, in moral strength and values, was the complete opposite of the man he had given his first serum to. And Rogers had proven this upon his exam, earning the scientist's respect by stating he didn't want to kill anyone, but that he didn't like bullies, and he continued to prove it as he went through the training program.
He just kept on going, he outsmarted his commanding officer when they tried to test his climbing skills by having him and his team climb up a flag pole by just pulling the pin from the bottom and making the pole fall down. And when his commanding officer went for one last test by throwing a grenade into the center of the group, everyone else ran and fled, but not Rogers. He jumped on top of it, ready to use his own body to shield the others from the explosion."
"Wait, a grenade – explodes?""It's basically a Bombarda curse contained within a small metal container with a single pin used to keep the spell in stasis. Release the pin and throw the grenade and the substance within reacts the same way as the curse. It's a Muggle weapon that is basically standard use in any war, at least for the last century or so."
"So Rogers proved his worth.""By willingly sacrificing himself.""And then what?" The twins ask and Ron yelps: "Where did you come from?""We wondered what could make our Ronnie not bolt down to breakfast upon waking up." Fred says and George encourages me: "Now come on, Harry. Tell us what happened after that? Was Rogers badly injured?" I shake my head and say: "The grenade turned out to be a fake, one without the chemicals within that would normally detonate.
But still, Rogers had proven himself the best candidate to be given the serum and because the scientist knew that the other guy – who had given himself the alias Red Skull, again later – would grow to be worse than Hitler – who is basically a Muggle Voldemort with how he hated the Jewish community on the same level Voldemort hates Muggles." And to my amazement Ron seems too enthralled by my story to flinch at hearing the name Voldemort.
"So Rogers was also given the serum and Captain America was born – or created, whatever you want to call it. He started actively fighting against Red Skull, who had done even more experiments on himself to the point that he had actually burned away his skin to the point that his whole skull – well, the name says it all, so yeah, you get the picture." The Weasleys all look disgusted at this and I think: "I think I'll skip this part when I speak with the others."
"In the end, in 1945, Captain America was able to defeat Red Skull, but in the fight the flying aircraft that Red Skull tried to use to attack the world, specifically the states at the time, had been damaged. And so, in an effort to save millions of lives, the Captain crashed the craft into the arctic. Everyone believed he had died in the crash – until a few years ago.
The whole thing had been found in the ice and it turns out that the ice worked on Cap's body the same way the Draught of Living Death does, he got frozen, but remained alive.""Wow." Ron whispers and the twins nod in agreement and joined awe before Ron asks: "So why are you telling us this?" "Because after the war several people in America, especially people who had worked alongside the Captain, decided that they wanted to continue protecting people like that.
They formed an organization that they called SHIELD, which stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate, and that has been working to protect the world ever since. When Cap woke up, he got asked to join them, but – well, that's not the only reason I'm telling you all this. You see, when the Ancient One found out about SHIELD, she went and enchanted their equipment in order to give them some leeway into the magical world, but also warn them.
The equipment was enchanted in such a way that if, without her consent, SHIELD got too involved with the magical world, the enchantment would make wizards entirely invisible to their eyes. And because so many wizards usually mix with Muggles on the streets, this was not a risk that SHIELD was able to take, so they agreed that the Ancient One would be, so to say, the Liaison between them and the magical world.
And well, when my parents found out that Voldemort was after me, they contacted SHIELD, because my mother was Muggleborn and knew about them. The Ancient One accepted this and the four of them made the agreement that, upon me turning eleven, I would start training. This happened and I started the day after Hagrid took me shopping. I just never told anyone, because the Ancient One told me that it was up to me when SHIELD would get involved.
She also told me something else, which is kind of the reason I have been waiting for so long and why I was so hesitant at the start of all this. I – I didn't want to get SHIELD involved, not until I had more evidence to back up her words. I did get that, two years ago, at the end of our second year, but – I couldn't let Ginny go through that, let alone your mum." This startles and befuddles my friends, yet I just carry on and say:
"Then Sirius escaped and I decided to just wait and see, hold back and observe how he, because it was a he that the Ancient One told me about, would react to it all. Well, you know what happened and while I knew I could get SHIELD involved at that point, I still waited. Mostly because of my vision and because I considered that just another test. I'm not proud of myself for that as it – well, it got Cedric killed, but – I decided to wait just a little longer."
"And now you're done waiting?""And you're going to get SHIELD involved?""Including Captain America?""Who has been frozen in ice for almost 50 years?" The twins ask, awe in both their voices and I nod at them as Ron asks: "How?" At which I pull a small device from my pocket and stuff it in my ear. "Ehm mate, you remember what Hermione told us about electronics, right?" Ron asks, but I huff and smirk as I say:
"Ron, that whole part of Hogwarts a History is as recently accurate as the books Lockhart wrote. Hermione's way too reliant on books, she doesn't realize for herself how wrong that knowledge is. I'll explain later." Ron shares a look with his brothers, who both look excited, obviously thinking of how they can tell Hermione that she's wrong about something. "They might as well just leave that to me." I think to myself as I start pressing the pin-sized buttons.
"Director Fury, do you copy? I repeat, Director Nicholas J. Fury, do you copy? This is Agent Potter reporting for duty. I repeat, this is Special Agent Hadrian J. Potter reporting for duty." And because I pressed just the right buttons, the voice of my long-time friend and mentor sounds from the small device in my ear and says: "I read you loud and clear, Agent Potter. I take it that it's time?" To which I happily and clearly answer: "Affirmative, sir."
"Copy that. The team's held up in Germany at the moment, residing in one of Stark's estates. I debriefed them after our last meeting and they decided to wait a little closer to home. I'll go collect them and debrief them. Are you still in the location depicted on the picture you send us?" "Affirmative once again, sir.""Copy that. Be downstairs and outside in ten minutes, Agent Potter. And prepare a cover story while you're at it. Over and out."
"Over and out." I repeat the phrase and then, just because I know that shit is going to hit the fan in only a matter of hours, days if I can get lucky, I turn from my flabbergasted friends to the empty frame on my right. "You're not fooling anyone, Black. I'm not stupid and I know exactly who suggested that Ron and I bunk here and why. So why don't you be a good boy and give the headmaster a real report, something that I'm sure he will be desperate to know."
A scoff is heard from the frame and I smirk as I say: "Tell him that I said this: you may have the file, but I have the copy. He'll understand. Come on, Ron. My friends deserve a welcome committee. Are you two coming?" Three excited nods are followed by my friends excitedly following me out of the room. But at the bottom of the staircase, instead of going left and down to the basement, I turn right and head for the front door.
"Harry dear, where – hey, where do you boys think you're all going? You can't go outside. Why –?" But while I can tell that Ron has become a bit hesitant, the twins each put one hand on each of his shoulders and push/guide him to keep walking. And while this happens, my mind whirs with a potential cover story as I know exactly what is going to happen once they arrive. And that thought makes the grin on my face expand even more.
Get excited, Harry.
So we got to have a bit of the backstory that I was talking about earlier, but the whole thing is going to take place next chapter. Please note that this takes place before OotP and after the 1st Avengers movie. I wanted to do either after the second or after the Winter Soldier movie, but I preferred to keep the Avengers team small (for now) and didn't want Harry to worry over Fury or think him dead. He's already going to do that about Hawkeye anyway.
