The Academy
There's a big bad coming, and the world needs a group of heroes, however this band of ragtag kids is probably not what the world had in mind.
The Prompt: Superhero Jori Au with powers that cancel each other (preferably more interesting than fire and ice, but it's your choice)
A/N: I really enjoyed this prompt and my mind went wild, I couldn't do a one shot for this so here comes a new story. It'll be short and not up to par with my other stories.
Chapter One
"Jade, you've got to get up honey, we've got to get into the car." a soft voice demanded. Jade blinked open her eyes, the figure was blurry, blonde hair, bright blue eyes. An arm reached out and pulled her from the bed, she padded softly behind them, trying to make out the features, trying to figure out who this was and why she was going.
The figure led her outside, down a driveway, and to a black sedan. "where am I going?" Jade asked, looking up at the figure. Mom. You're mom. Her brain filled in. She gripped her hand tighter, her stomach felt all bubbly and sloshy.
"You're going away, Jade." a harsh voice informed her. A new figure appeared beside the blonde one, dark hair, dark eyes, cruel hands. He broke the hold the blonde had on Jade's small hand, dragging the figure back, "get into the car, Jade."
With a sad look she crawled into the opened door, using her hands on the seat to drag her small body in. she turned around, but the door was shut, the windows tinted so heavily she couldn't see outside, "mommy!"she banged her hand on the window, but it did no good. The car moved quickly, knocking Jade back into her seat, "mommy!"
Jade sat up with a start, her stomach rolled and her throat burned. She launched from her bed, hurtling herself toward the bathroom, crashing to her knees at the base of the toilet. Her stomach clenched as she lurched forward, clutching the porcelain desperately as she heaved. When she was done she rested her cheek on the cool surface, breathing slowly as her stomach ached.
"Fuck." she groaned pathetically, dragging herself away from the toilet, snapping the lid closed and dragging down the handle. The sound of the flushing made another wave of nausea wash over her, but she refused to pay it any heed, instead crawling over to the tub, pushing up the knob toward warm, flipping the stopper on the tub and letting it fill up, resting against the tub with her arms dangling into the water.
Her fingers played across the top, flinging droplets about as the storm in her mind slowly disbanded. When the water engulfed her hand she shut it off. Getting to her feet she pulled off her underwear and tank top before sinking into the hot water, laying down and letting it engulf her.
She'd done this since she was little, whenever she was sick. The heat soothed away the pain in her muscles, deep down in her bones, and dulled the ache in her heart. She stayed under until she couldn't breathe, and then a little bit longer until her lungs burned, and then she surfaced with a gasp.
It'd been eight years since that night, but Jade had the nightmare so often that it might as well have been yesterday. Still she had to try and push past that, as she always did, and remember that it was there loss that day, not hers.
Standing on shaking legs she emptied the tub and started the shower head, icy water soaking her to the bone. She scrubbed at her skin quickly and washed her hair before stepping out into the bathroom, grabbing a towel and wrapping it around her chest.
A quick glance at the dark sky told her it was still early in the morning, her alarm clock informed her it was only 4 am. The thought of going back to bed crossed her mind for only a second before she shook her head at the fruitlessness of the thought. Instead she went to her dresser and pulled out clothes for the day; black jeans, black socks, black tank top, black bra, black underwear.
Fully dressed with her combat boots tied, Jade shrugged on her leather jacket, grabbed her gears of war bag and quietly cracked open her door. Peering out into the hallway she found it empty, as it usually was at four am. She carefully edged out of her room, shutting the door silently behind her, and made her way down the hall as silent as a mouse.
She just had to make it down the stairs, into the kitchen, out the back door and over the wall, then she was home free. She'd done it a million times before, so when she smacked into the potted plant by the stairs she felt her heart drop into her throat. Her hands shot out and the pot froze midair, "fuck!" she hissed.
Her combat boots pounded down the stairs and she skidded into the kitchen, hearing the pot crash upstairs as her freeze wore off, cursing once more she hastily unlocked the back door and bolted across the lawn, not hesitating as she launched herself at the wall, grabbed the top and hauling herself over. She tumbled over, landing on her butt on the other side.
"Well, that was fun. Good going, idiot." she mumbled, pushing herself to her feet. She brushed her pants off and picked up her bag, checking to make sure her things were still safely inside, before she marched off through the woods.
Her motorcycle was where she left it, hidden in some trees with her cover over it. She spent a few minutes folding it up and stowing it beneath her seat. She rolled the bike carefully back up to the road, swung a leg over and started it up, grinning at the purr of the machine beneath her. She gave it a few minutes to warm up before snugging her helmet over her head and ripping off down the street.
The park had always been Jade's favorite place to write. It was a few blocks away from the local high school, kids came by all of the time and it helped her have a sense of normalcy in all of this crap she was dealt. Magic powers. Super powers. Whatever they wanted to call them, Jade wanted nothing to do with them.
To her it wasn't anything but a curse.
At the park, though, she was just a normal high school girl. For all the people that passed through the park knew she went to the local high school, possibly did drugs, and was a bad influence. But she was normal and that's all that mattered to her.
She got lost in her script, page after page of words spitting out from her pen tip. It was a peaceful release, her mind no longer remembering the chaos that floated through it as fantasy worlds unloaded before her. No training, no rules, no classes, no stares.
"Seriously, just leave me alone!" a soft voice urged, sounding near tears. It drew Jade's attention up from her notebook and over to a group of girls not too far away from her, "please!" The group was made up of five girls, four just watching with phones aimed, and a red head who was the obvious leader.
They were surrounding a girl with long brown hair who had a notebook clutched tightly to her chest. The red head snatched it from her with a wide grin on her face, she flipped it open and started reading it, Jade couldn't hear the words. The brunette reached for the notebook frantically, an embarrassed and angry look on her face.
Jade quietly closed her notebook, slipping it into her bag. She started to stand, slipping the strap across her shoulders, but paused, things happened faster than she could move to step in.
The red head reached out and gave the girl a hard shove, knocking her straight to the ground, ready to pounce on top of her. The brunette tossed her hands up, blocking her face and trying to push the other girl away as she moved to jump her. Instead she literally flew away, shooting across park and into a set of swings, falling in a slump on the ground.
Everything happened fast after that.
The group of girls disbanded, the ones with phones quickly started screaming about the world knowing how much of a freak she was, the red haired girl attempted to get to her feet but she'd hit her head hard. The girls with the cameras didn't even pay attention to her. They were focused on the brunette who scrambled to her feet, trying to get to her notebook.
Jade moved in then, running to the notebook and scooping it up, shoving it into her bag as she moved toward the girl, "come on, I got you." she whispered, grabbing the girl by the arm and hauling her to her feet.
"Where are you taking me?"
"Somewhere safe, come on." Jade urged her on, dragging her over to her motorcycle. The girl gave it a skeptical look, but by now the girls were racing after her, all five of them, and she willingly followed Jade onto her bike. Jade shoved her helmet into the girls hands and she fumbled for a moment before shoving it down on her head, arms wrapping around Jade's middle as the girl tore out of the parking lot.
