(Jungle Book: The Story Retold)
(Part 1: Mowgli's Childhood)
(Chapter 1: Welcome to the jungle)
Abhay and his wife, Esha, had decided to leave their village not too far away from where they had taken refuge. A tiger had been slaughtering their cattle, it would always come when they all least expected. Most of the times when the striped fiend would come, was within the earliest hours of the morning before the dawn. The beast was resilient, no matter how hard the villagers tried to drive the tiger away, it would always come back despite the injuries they inflicted. Each month would get worse and worse, the number of cattle was starting to dwindle, and so the tiger was starting to take some of the weak men.
Esha had begun to fear for her infant son's life, she consistently pleaded with her brave husband to leave the village in order to avoid the wrath of this vile tiger. Abhay had initially went against the idea of fleeing the village, and into the depths of the unknown jungle that surrounded their small settlement, but after surveying his surroundings by heading not too far into the jungle, he found a cave where they could potentially find shelter in.
The cave was situated within a perfect place, it was within a small clearing. Deer occasionally passed through this part of the jungle, a perfect food source. Down the hill from them was a flowing river, fish would pass through here sometimes as well, it could serve as a water source, a place to bathe in, and a place to get fish for food.
It would be this night that proved disaster for the husband and wife, and it would indirectly place their infant into the hands of the jungle. This cave had two entrances, one was at the top of the hill, and another was at the bottom. You see, this river would eventually turn into a waterfall that would plummet far down into deeper depths of the jungle. If one was to follow a pathway, they would find that they could get behind the falling water, and enter a cave near the top. At the top was a system of tunnels that would go up into a small hill, which is where the other end of the cave was located, and where Abhay and Esha were planning on settling in for at least a while.
Esha was down by the river, gathering water in a few pots with her son snug in a basket lined with soft cloth to comfort his small body. She was unaware of what was about to happen back at the cave.
Abhay was sitting down near a lit campfire within the cave, using a stick to hold out a piece of deer meat by the flaming logs in order to cook it. Unknowingly attracting a fearsome predator that lurked within the darkness of the cave.
That same tiger had been patrolling throughout the jungle, hunting for prey, until his nose caught the scent of a deer carcass. It would follow the smell into the cave, and it would go all the way near the top where it would see the glow of fire. The tiger rounded the corner, and it could see that the deer carcass had already been split open, and the tiger also seen that it was a man that had killed it. The tiger noticed that the reddish glow was coming from the fire, or as the jungle called it The Red Flower.
There was something known as the law of the jungle, but the tiger followed his own laws, the laws didn't apply to him, or so he believed. The striped fiend believed to himself that man was forbidden, and no man or man's cub should obtain the power of the red flower. Seeing that this man had already slain a deer, obtained the red flower, and was already getting used to the jungle, enraged the tiger greatly.
The tiger stooped down low, preparing to pounce, letting out a menacing growl that caught Abhay's attention. The man stood up, turning around to see the glowing eyes of the creature within the darkness. He began to slowly back away, as the growl became louder.
"Esha! Esha!" He called out, fearing the worst.
The wife happened to be humming to herself as she continued to gather some water into the pots, but then she heard her name being called, the tone of voice filled with distress. Panicked, Esha stood up, forgetting all about her infant son including the pots.
The tiger roared ferociously as he lunged towards Abhay, taking a swipe at his head with his claws, the man was successful in dodging out to the side, but he still received three nasty slashes across his right cheek.
Abhay could see the tiger's glowing eyes near the campfire, he could hear the clicking of the claws against the rocky floor of the cave as it got to a running start before attempting to pounce once again.
Abhay was once more, able to dodge away from the viscous beast, his eyes taking notice of a decent sized rock laying against the rocky wall. Normally, this rock would be incredibly heavy, requiring some strain and both arms to pick it up. Thanks to the adrenaline rushing through him, and the heart pounding in his chest, Abhay heaved up the rock with ease in both arms, hurling it at the tiger as fast as he could.
The rock would end up smashing against the right dominant paw of the tiger, crushing it between the thrown rock and the hard stone floor. The beast roared in agony, jerking his paw from beneath the rock, hatred in the eyes.
Abhay quickly leaned down to try and scoot one of the logs out from the campfire, only then to get pounced on by the animal. The man raised up the log to block the sharp teeth of the tiger, the wood making a snapping noise as the canines of the beast clamped down hard on the log. Abhay glanced over to look in the direction of the mouth of the cave to see his wife staring at him in horror.
"Run Esha, run!" Abhay screamed at the top of his lungs, the tiger stamped one of his frontal paws down to let out a mighty roar in her direction almost as if was saying that she was next.
Esha ran back towards the river to retrieve her son and the pots of water that she had filled up, she could only carry one pot and the basket at one time. She let out a scream as she frantically rushed back down the hill, tears of fear and regret slowly traveling down her cheeks.
Back at the cave, Abhay continued to desperately fight back with all he had. He tried pushing against the powerful force of the tiger, kicking at the underside of the beast with his feet. He jerked his arms around, embers from the log launched right into the left eye of the tiger.
The striped creature reeled back in pain from the orange ember being flicked into his eye, gently pawing at it before glaring at Abhay once again. The tiger noticed something else, one of his eyes had gone blind.
"Begone, tiger..." Abhay growled, wiping some blood from his face in which had been smeared all over him after he was clawed in the face. His whole body was wracked with pain after being tackled to the floor earlier, but he would do whatever he could to defend his wife and his son.
Esha had just made it to the river, picking up a smaller pot while also yanking the basket up. The woman ran as fast as she could back up the hill, the extra weight making it a bit difficult.
The tiger roared, charging forth as Abhay braced himself, raising up the flaming log in hopes of bashing it over the head of the striped animal. He suddenly felt something hit his throat, there was a sudden sting, but then a cool sensation began to spill all over his neck. His throat had been slashed by the claws of the tiger. Abhay looked down to see his crimson bodily fluids staining his shirt at a rapid rate, he then felt faint as he clutched the wound on his throat.
The striped fiend growled in satisfaction, now he went for the killing blow as he pounced on Abhay from behind, sinking his teeth deep into the man's jugular. He let out a scream, knowing there was nothing else he could do now to ensure the safety of Esha and their son.
She happened to run right past the cave when she heard her husband's cries of agony before falling silent when the tiger killed him in an instant. Her mind thought of the worst, and her thoughts were indeed correct. In her mind she could say sorry a million times over in her native Hindi tongue, but she was afraid none would reach him.
"Tiger!" Esha called out, hoping her raised voice reached the village. The village wasn't incredibly far away, she just needed to get a bit closer. Salty tasting tears continued to stream down her cheeks and onto her lips.
The fearsome striped beast heard her cries, growling furiously. No human could ever stay in the jungle, it is forbidden, death to any man that even tried!
The tiger roared, charging forth from the cave, and after Esha.
"Tiger!" Esha screamed again, getting closer to the other side of the clearing now.
She then heard the footsteps of the beast on the grass behind her, getting louder and louder. Esha suddenly came to a stop, turning around to hurl the pot right into the tiger's face, she had accidentally timed it perfectly, the pot shattering into the face of the big cat at point blank, stunning it momentarily.
Esha had dropped the basket to the ground, not realizing it as she continued to run for her life. Thankfully for her, the tiger had become so enraged that it didn't focus on the baby within the basket, instead it had it's sights set on killing her instead.
"TIGER!" Esha screamed at the top of her lungs as she could now hear some indistinct chatter in the distance, along with what sounded like a child laughing. She was then pounced on from behind, being killed instantly from a bite to her jugular!
Before the tiger could capitalize on his kill, he could hear commotion in the distance, along with the glows of torches coming his way. As powerful as he was, several men along with the might of the red flower, they would overwhelm him. This tiger was a monster, but he was aware of his own mortality, he wasn't dumb. The tiger growled, annoyed by the facts that put him at the disadvantage, running away into the jungle once again.
(5 hours later)
Within the next hour, the sun would rise. The body of Esha had been found, and it had been buried in the yard behind her home. Sadly, Abhay's corpse wasn't found either, neither was the baby.
The baby had awoken, it was hungry. The only way it could communicate was by wailing out into the night, unfortunately for him, his parents were nowhere to be found anymore...
There had came a rustling in the treetops above the infant as it cried, along with the sound of thin twigs snapping here and there. It had slightly calmed down the infant, but now it was just confused, still hungry for anything it could nibble on.
His tiny eyes caught glimpse of something within the treetops, something that had a long and thick body. It didn't appear to have any legs, or ears of that matter. A forked tongue flickered at one of the ends of the body, turning around a corner, and slowly lowering itself down towards the baby.
Ten hours earlier, rains had pounded the entirety of the Seeonee Hills but a few hours afterwards they had stopped. The moonlight had returned to the jungles of India. The wetness of the jungle floors, including the light of the moon gave the body of this serpent a shiny glimmer. This serpent had a name, her name was Kaa. She was an Indian Rock Python, and it had been quite some time since her last meal...
"How interesting." She hissed deviously, a smirk forming on her serpentine head. Her cat-like yellow eyes having a strange glow to them as she got closer to the basket in which contained the infant.
Her voice had a seductive, soothing tone to it that had a strange entrancing effect over anyone she spoke to. This baby was completely at the snake's mercy at this point in time.
Kaa wasn't the only creature of the jungle that had found themselves in this area. Another creature was drawn to this area due to the scent of blood, some of it was fresh, and some of it had a stench, a sign that the blood had dried up and aged.
"Well hello there, little one. Where is your mother or father at?" Kaa said, continuing to lower herself right down next to the basket, coiling her large body up next to it. Her head dangling down over it, looming over the baby within it.
The baby whimpered some as it looked around, before yawning some.
Kaa, trying to play along with the infant, to earn his trust; decided to act innocent and she didn't know how to handle a small cub such as him.
"Oh silly me, they must be out hunting for food. How could they leave behind such an adorable morsel such as you?" Kaa said softly, pretending to feel bad for the infant.
Of course, the baby couldn't understand what this serpent was saying, and Kaa knew that, but she knew the way her voice worked over young individuals who didn't know any better, and didn't understand the world around them.
"I can take you home, with me. I will keep you nice and warm, you'll be...Ssssafe.." Kaa hissed, her eyes began to emit different colors. From grassy greens to light blues, to amazing yellows, to even sinful blacks, and so on. Her voice got slightly deeper, more soothing and calming than before, making the baby yawn.
"Leave it be, Kaa!" A voice demanded from afar, Kaa stopped her hypnotic powers on the infant before looking back up to identify the voice, she could see yellow eyes staring at her from the darkness of the cave. A shadow emerged from the cave, a shadow of a big cat, but this wasn't the evil tiger from before.
This was Bagheera, the black panther of the jungle. He knew this serpent very well, along with several other animals and reptiles within the jungle. He had different morals than Kaa did.
"Why should I?" Kaa asked, the tone of her voice sounding very annoyed. "I'm starved, I haven't had a good meal in so long." Kaa hissed, her eyes redirecting themselves back into the basket.
"What were you trying to devour? That man-made thing?" The panther asked, he couldn't see the baby within the basket.
"No, you foolish feline. I'm looking at what is within." Kaa answered, Bagheera continued to approach the basket, upon seeing what was inside, his yellow eyes widened in shock.
"A man's cub?" The panther asked himself, but suddenly everything clicked in his mind, what he seen back at the cave made sense. The bloody corpse of that man, the fresh smelling corpse, was the father of this child. Bagheera sighed, Kaa became confused.
"What is it? You've never seen one before?" Kaa asked with a teasing chuckle at the end of her question, she had lived in a location where many humans came and went, she had seen her fair share of humans before.
"No, it isn't that of which disturbs me. Come with me, you'll see something else that may fill you up more than a defenseless cub such as the man-cub." The panther explained, guiding Kaa towards the mouth of the cave, the massive serpent slithered after him, intrigued of what he was wanting to show her.
Kaa was surprised to see two corpses, one of a deer, and another of a man. The serpent then connected the dots, realizing that the corpse of this man was indeed the father of the man-cub she had planned on devouring.
She glanced back at the basket, and then looked down at Abhay's corpse with a sorrowful sigh.
"I see," Kaa said, her voice sounding sorry and her eyes drooping appearing to be sad.
"I'll let the man-cub live, but it is best for me not to see him when I grow hungry again or if I shed my skin. I'll eat anything when I am hungry.." The serpent warned as she slithered over to the deer carcass, unhinging her jaw, then proceeding to swallow the dead animal whole slowly but surely.
Bagheera watched on as Kaa devoured the deer whole, but then heard some childish babbling behind him. The panther turned around to see the little brown baby standing before him, seemingly curious as he placed his small hand on his snout.
The panther couldn't help but smile, he never understood what it would be like to have offspring or something close, but this was an infant alright, he decided that it should be watched over just as any other cub should, until it was old enough to move out on it's own.
"What are you going to do with him?" Kaa asked after swallowing the rest of the deer whole, slithering up next to Bagheera.
"I'll see what Akela decides, I hope that he allows him to stay with us. The people of the man-village would kill me if they seen one of their young with me, if the man-cub is allowed to stay, then she shall stay with us until he is old enough to move out on his own." He explained, Kaa smirked at this.
"Hmmm, and what if Akela decides that he shouldn't stay?" She hissed playfully, but also sounding devious in her question.
"We'll see what happens, don't get any ideas, Kaa..." Bagheera growled as a warning.
"Fine then, my hunger is satisfied...For now." She hissed as she slithered back towards the trees, wrapping around them as she climbed up to the treetops, heading back to her place of residence.
Bagheera looked back down at the infant that stood before him, playing with the grass with a light laugh, making the panther smile.
"Come with me, man-cub." The inky black feline said gently.
(The next evening)
It took the black panther around a whole day to carry the young one back, when he would grow thirsty, Bagheera would gently lay the child somewhere safe to drink. He had already hunted, but he could stay full for only so long, it is draining carrying a human child around all day, leaping from place to place to go to other locations.
The panther carried the child all the way up to the mountain where the pack lived, and his hunger had gotten the better of him.
"Stay here, man-cub." The big dark feline suggested before bounding away, but of course the baby had no clue what he meant or what he was saying.
Now it was about the time for the pack to go out hunting for game, the sky had begun to fade away into more beautiful colors, the red and the light purple of the clouds too. Trees and other landforms turned into silhouettes and shadows on the horizon as the sun began to fade beneath it, the countless amounts of stars have emerged as well, not to mention the moon.
Father Wolf awoken with a yawn before scratching himself with his hind paw, the sounds of him shifting around woke up Mother Wolf as well, lifting her head to reveal the few cubs that she had her body curled around to protect them.
Father Wolf gazed at the sky as he emerged from the cave housing most of the wolves, he had woken up at the right time. For it was time to search for the evening meal.
"Ah yes, it is time to go on the hunt!" He boasted, licking his chops before starting to bound down the hill, but he was stopped in his tracks when a dark tawny colored figure emerged from the shrubbery to his right, it was smaller than him, and it had a bushy tail, but the voice was all familiar to him.
"Oh yes! Good hunting, good hunting...lone wolf." The creature spoke, mocking the call of the Seeonee Wolf Pack when they went out to go on their evening hunts. Father Wolf usually never went alone, he traveled with the pack.
"Tabaqui..." Father Wolf snarled, he despised this jackal, as a matter of fact, almost all of the wolves of India couldn't stand him. Yet it was the Seeonee Hills Pack that disliked him the most, for Tabaqui caused mischief in that area the most, mocking them and taunting them.
"What is it you want?" Father Wolf continued, asking because the jackal that stood before him was looking over his shoulder.
"I'm starved, Shere Khan has seemed to take all I can eat. He does not permit me to eat what he eats, but I'm keen to know what you hold in your den." The jackal answered.
"Perhaps you should stop serving him, but come, enter the den. You will find that there is nothing for you here." Father Wolf said, pointing his head back towards the gaping mouth of the cave.
Tabaqui chuckled, his voice had a high pitched raspy voice that angered all the wolves. As the jackal entered, he got all sorts of nasty looks from the wolves that were still resting, even some vicious growls, but he picked up the scent of a deer carcass.
There yet remained a slight amount of meat on the carcass, at the end of the ribs, but pretty much everything else had been devoured by the pack.
"I do thank you for the meal," Tabaqui snickered before his wicked eyes caught glimpse of the cubs in which Mother Wolf had been protecting. The jackal approached the cubs with a false look of love.
"What amazing cubs, so adorable...these shall grow to make fine leaders of the pack. Won't th-" His sentence was cut off when Mother Wolf lunged out towards him with a furious growl, baring her teeth.
"Leave them, and you need to leave us as well." Mother Wolf said aggressively, Tabaqui cowered away while laughing deviously, slowly backing out of the cave.
"Fine, I'll go Raksha...I'll go, but know this: Shere Khan shall hunt among these hills, he has told me. For another year." Tabaqui warned, Mother Wolf (who shall now be known as Raksha,) looked at Father Wolf with concern.
"He cannot, the law states that he cannot leave his region without warning. He is breaking the Jungle Law by doing this!" Father Wolf barked aggressively, raising his voice, and it was then that Tabaqui started to become aggressive.
"Oh, and what are you going to do, to stop him!?" The jackal growled.
"I've got a pack to feed, and as it grows, I shall need to hunt more often. If he is to come within the Seeonee Hills, all of the game will be destroyed!" Father Wolf snarled.
"Such a shame, such a shame.." Tabaqui began- "Such a shame that this pack shall be dead within the next year!"
Those words were enough to get Father Wolf to rush the jackal, Tabaqui ran while letting out a round of laughter, leaping into the bushes. He listened as the laughter faded away as Tabaqui got further into the jungle.
However, there came a sudden rustling within the shrubs to his left. Father Wolf's hair stood on end in reaction to the bushes shaking as he turned his attention to the shrubbery.
"What could it be now..." The wolf growled, getting ready to pounce. The thing that would end up emerging, shocked him...
"What the?" He asked himself, what he saw was a tiny brown boy. This was no wolf or animal or any kind, it was a human child!
"A man's cub!" Father Wolf exclaimed, the baby gazed up at the wolf in front of him and did the usual babbling an infant does, it reached for the snout of Father Wolf with a small cooing noise.
Raksha emerged from the cave to get a closer look at the new arrival of sorts, her eyes widening in surprise.
"Oh my! In my years of being a mother to my cubs, I've never seen something like it before. A man-cub!" She exclaimed just as Father Wolf had done moments ago.
"We cannot keep such a thing, it belongs in the man-village, not among us wolves." Father Wolf spoke.
"Perhaps we can call council for this?" Raksha asked, Father Wolf seemed like he didn't know how to answer.
"Just think about it, Rama. We don't know where it came from, we live far from the man-village. Surely it could not have came all the way here from there." Raksha continued, Father Wolf (Who shall now be known as Rama,) sighed.
"Well, I don't know. The law states that if the cub can finally stand on its feet, it can go as it pleases. So I guess it can sta-" The baby had suddenly risen to its feet, and began to hobble towards the den to join the other cubs.
"I think we should call a council for this man-cub if we are to keep it. You just seen it stand on two feet, I do hope that Akela allows this." Raksha said with a warm smile.
"Fine, you may go to Akela. I just don't think we should keep him, it is the strangest of all things for a man-cub to roam among us wolves. I hope that you realize that." Rama said, sounding concerned.
"Akela is the wisest of all of us, for he is the leader of the entire pack of the Seeonee Hills, our small batch is nothing but a few. Surely he will make the best decision, at least I hope." Raksha said, the two parental wolves gazed down at the cub as it looked up upon them. Bagheera overheard this, and grew concerned.
(Council Rock, next evening)
It was in the later hours of the evening when pitch darkness would blanket the whole sky, every wolf and cub had eaten their fair share of meat, and had drank their desired amount of water from the river all the way down the mountain. Most of the wolves that had shown up chattered amongst themselves, Baloo, the teacher of the cubs, had also shown up, but Bagheera was mysteriously not within the area.
Akela had the perfect view of the horizon, he would sit and wait until the sun was no longer in sight, the moon was casting the lunar light down upon the council as the elder wolf turned around to his entire pack.
"Look well, o' wolves!" Akela called out, and almost everyone that had been chatting, fell into a dead silence within an instant. The voice of the elder leader was powerful, and bold.
"Now, Raksha has decided to call council this evening. What is it that concerns you?" Akela announced, looking down at Raksha from the edge of the rock, sitting beneath the lone tree that stood on the edge.
Raksha gently pushed the infant out to the center of the rock, the entire council gasped, voicing their own opinions. Some wolves were shocked at the sight of a man-cub, others were disgusted, how could Raksha and Rama even make the decision of keeping him?
"I've brought to you, Mowgli, the little frog." Raksha explained, nudging the infant further a little bit more for Akela to examine him some more.
Akela closely looked at Mowgli, the infant that had been found two nights before. Never has this happened before, and it would more than likely bring in a new way of life to these wolves, especially the young.
"How strange, Raksha. You wish to raise this man-cub, as if he were your own cub? Are you sure that you don't want him to travel back to the man-village?" Akela asked, Raksha nodded her head in agreement to keeping Mowgli.
"Very well," Akela said, acknowledging her agreement to keep him, but the rest of the council needed to speak.
"This man-cub wasn't born among us, it was found. You all know the law, but I will give him a chance-" Akela began, gazing at all of the council including the Himalayan Brown Bear, Baloo who was resting against a rock on his hind legs nearby.
"Who among us, wants to keep this cub in our pack? Speak now." Akela continued, the entire council began to speak at one time, showing their opinions all at once in a chaotic noise of jumbled words. It was Baloo who broke that noise.
"I speak for the cub, and I shall teach him as I teach all the other wolves in the Seeonee Pack!" Baloo said loudly for everyone to hear, the wolves that disagreed with keeping Mowgli gave their mentor a confused look, some seemed very angry with the bear's decision.
"Alright, who else speaks for the cub?" Akela asked, and once again the council got into an uproar, but this time a bull carcass suddenly plopped down from the hill. Some wolves approached the corpse, sniffing it.
"I speak for the cub!" Bagheera called out as he leapt from the shadows, everyone liked the panther, even those that seemed hesitant to keep Mowgli in the pack liked him, no matter the decisions he made. A dead bull was laying before him, a bull he had brought, this was the price.
"Yes, the life of a cub can be bought for a price. As the law states!" A juvenile wolf explained with a nod of his head.
"We have three that speak, is there anyone else?" Akela announced, Rama would reluctantly agree to keep him.
"That makes four, Raksha, Rama, Bagheera, and Baloo have all spoken for the cub. If there is any one else to speak, lend your voice." Akela would say, and right when the pack got into yet another chaotic uproar of mixing opinions, a menacing roar filled the entire area of Council Rock.
"Can you hear your pack? Akela?" A deep, rough voice growled from nearby. All eyes shifted to face the passage that would lead out of Council Rock to see none other than Shere Khan.
"They do not want him in the pack, out of them all, four have only spoke for him." The tiger continued, Akela stood his ground.
"You, you shouldn't be here..." Akela growled, baring his teeth viciously.
"I have shifted my hunting grounds, fool. I shall kill and hunt in these hills as long as I please." Shere Khan replied angrily, advancing closer towards the council. The wolves began to move in formation if they were to defend, the cubs stepped back.
"The law forbids you to coming here without warning, leave this perimeter, and never return!" Akela growled, raising his voice boldly.
"Indeed the law forbids me, but that man-cub doesn't belong in these hills. Man is forbidden, Rama should have slain him the moment he laid his eyes on him!" The tiger roared, his voice echoing throughout the council like the sound of a thunderclap.
"You do not enforce the laws around these parts, I do. It would be wise to leave these hills, now." Akela growled, his fur becoming bushy and his eyes growing wide. The skin around the snout curling back to reveal his gums and fangs. Shere Khan took this as a sign of wanting to fight.
"You do not frighten me, you are old. You wouldn't want to commence an attack..." The tiger growled, getting even closer, his eyes narrowing as he then noticed the man-cub.
"Indeed I am old, but the pack stands with me!" Akela fired back, the pack advancing towards Shere Khan with their fur bushed out, showing signs of aggression. Even Baloo stood up on his hind legs, giving the tiger a mighty roar.
Shere Khan began to acknowledge that he was outnumbered, and he began to slowly back away. The tiger growled viciously, not intimidated, but not dumb nonetheless to take on the numbers game.
"Until the day that I fall from this world, or get too weak to hunt, you will not disturb these hills. You will not lay a single claw on our prey, and you will certainly not harm the man-cub. Now GO!" Akela barked, Baloo and Bagheera advanced, roaring at Shere Khan from behind the pack, the two larger animals being the big guns if the pack was to ever be attacked and overpowered.
"When you lose a kill, and when you are unfit to rule this pack. I will end the life of the man-cub, just as I did to his mother and father!" Shere Khan roared as loud as his lungs would let him before leaving Council Rock.
"Council has resumed, the cub has been spoken for. He will be apart of the pack until he can stand on his feet instead of crawl." Akela said, bringing a close to the council as he reared his head up to the moon, howling to signify the end of the meeting.
Mowgli was now part of the Seeonee Hills Wolf Pack!
