Evelyn had grown used to her strange ability. It would have been easy to think her visions of the future were just fear if they hadn't kept coming true – and that's how she knew she wasn't crazy.

When it first started, she told herself that the disasters she foresaw were just her imagination and that everything would be fine. Sometimes she listened to the encouraging words and took a chance on a scary situation. She only saw a short way into the future, and only at the times she was feeling really worried. The furthest she had seen into the future was a few days (though that had only happened the once), she rarely saw more than 30 minutes ahead, with the longest occurrence giving her details of less than five minutes worth of images all scrambled together. The closer she was to the event, the more details she saw and the less time she had to prepare for it.

Evelyn always kept a bag packed and under her bed, scared that someday someone would find out what she could do and hurt her. She had never shared her secret with anyone, never tried to seek medical help, even though she knew there were others out there with strange gifts trying to be heroes. All she wanted was a safe and quiet life. Preferably in a place with a nice little garden where she could grow pretty flowers and have fresh vegetables for her dinner, like the one she remembered at her grandparent's house.

It was late afternoon and she drawn to her bedroom in the way that her abilities sometimes worked, insisting that she needed to be somewhere without showing her the reason why. She looked down and saw the handle of her suitcase sticking out from under the bed. Before she could reach down to push it back, there was a man standing in her room reaching for her arm. Evelyn grabbed the suitcase just as he appeared, preparing to swing it to hit him with, but he stepped out of reach and smiled at her.

"I am Captain Rip Hunter and you, my dear, are invited to join my team of Legends. Your unique abilities are perfect for our mission and rather than waste them on an invisible life, hidden away from the rest of the world, I am offering you the opportunity of a lifetime."

"No."

Evelyn studied his appearance, preparing a slot in her memories to highlight his image just in case he showed up in any of her visions. She didn't feel frightened by him, so she wouldn't be able to see what he intended which was a bit of a pain.

"What?"

"No thank you. I don't know what you're talking about and I'm not going anywhere. You can leave the same way you appeared or I'll call the police."

"I don't think you understand…"

"That there's a crazy man in my room?"

"I am a Time Agent…"

Evelyn tilted her head and asked in an unimpressed, disbelieving tone: "really?"

"…and you can see the future. Just give me a chance to prove it to you."

Evelyn shook her head, wishing for once that she could control her visions to see a way out of this, but Rip already had one hand on her arm and another on a device which had opened a circular doorway to another place and was pulling her through.

"Welcome to the Waverider!"

The Waverider was receiving some much-needed repairs. Jax was in the engine room as usual, tinkering away when Rip requested everyone join him on the bridge. He half-considered ignoring the summons, but as the repairs weren't at a critical stage and Rip's visits usually meant trouble he laid down his tools - determined to remind the ex-Captain that he was no longer in charge and that without a working ship the Legends couldn't travel to save the universe. He met Martin on the way to the bridge, but the scientist had no information on Rip's visit.

Ray and Sara had been on the bridge when Rip arrived with the stranger. They had listened to her tell him in firm, calm tones to take her home, then watched as she tried to attack Rip with a suitcase when he refused.

"Just wait until you meet everyone," Rip had told her, then instructed Gideon to call the rest of the team.

"I don't want to meet anyone else, I want to go home!"

"Uh Rip, did you kidnap this young lady?" Ray asked, stepping forward with a friendly smile for their new visitor.

"He did," she told him, making a quick assessment and finding herself wanting to trust him. "I recognise you from somewhere."

"Ray Palmer, from Star City," he held out a hand and waited for her to introduce herself.

"And this is Sara Lance," Rip jumped in with the information when Evelyn failed to release her grip on her suitcase to take Ray's hand.

Evelyn's gaze turned to Sara at the name, "any relation to Detective Lance also from Star City?"

"My father," Sara nodded, "do you know him?"

"He helped me once."

"So you're from Star City too?" Ray asked.

"I lived there for a while," Evelyn evaded answering the question.

At that moment Jax and Martin joined them, followed by Nate. Ray was quick to introduce them, floundering a little when it came time to introduce their guest.

"Everyone, this is Evelyn," Rip concluded for him. "I think she'll make a great member of your team."

"Except for the fact that she doesn't want to be here," Sara reminded him.

"That's only because she doesn't understand what we do."

"Then hurry up and tell me so I can go home," Evelyn countered.

"We are the Legends," Ray told her, "we travel through time fixing anachronisms and stopping evil villains..."

Evelyn held up a hand to stop him, "you're heroes?" She turned to Rip, "no way. I don't want to be a hero. I want to live as far away from the spotlight as possible and survive to grow old."

"You've been using your gifts to warn the police about potential incidents in Star City. Clearly you to want to help people."

"How did you know about that?"

"Your phone calls to Detective Lance flagged as a potential anachronism in the timeline. At first I thought Sara might have been involved, warning her father about problems, but when I investigated and tracked the calls to you…"

"I used burner phones and changed my location each time."

"Yes but I can travel through time, my technology is far superior. Then I tracked you back to your childhood, saw the incident with the temporal energy that gave you this gift and watched until I was sure what meant."

"You spied on me?"

"Yes, and it's lucky I did. Some of the criminal elements in your time were becoming suspicious about how the police were frequently turning up to stop them."

"I can take care of myself. I'll see them coming and escape."

"You didn't see me coming."

"You came through that portal, and I had enough warning to grab my suitcase."

Rip smiled at her, "perhaps the reason you have the suitcase is because you're meant to stay here."

"Look, you've given me your big speech now are you going to take me back or…"

Rip looked around, "we're just waiting for one more member of the team."

Evelyn sighed, ready to put down her heavy suitcase, "really?"

"Will somebody tell Gideon to switch off that stupid alarm in my room, I was trying to sleep!" Mick burst onto the bridge, an empty bottle of beer in one hand.

"Perhaps he isn't the best person to help persuade Evelyn…" Ray began, looking between Nate and Sara for back-up.

"Who's the new chick?" Mick moved towards them slowly, not quite steady on his feet.

"This is Evelyn, Rip wants her to join the Legends," Nate quickly moved between Rory and the rest of the group, but Mick brushed past him.

He stopped next to Ray and looked at the hands tightly gripping a suitcase handle, "don't do it. It's too dangerous."

"I don't want to stay here." Evelyn looked at him in surprise, "you're not a hero, I recognise you from the news."

"Mr Rory is a reformed criminal, using his unique skills to help the team," Rip explained.

"Sensible girl, go home while you still can," Mick turned away.

Evelyn caught a flash of the future, images showing Mick stumbling over the steps leading out of the bridge, his bottle smashing on the ground, the glass flying everywhere.

"Watch the steps," she called after him.

Rip motioned for Nate to follow Mick, knowing he wouldn't catch up to him before the stairs and grabbed a first aid kit. The others watched as Evelyn's vision played out in the present; then turned to look at her in surprise.

"Did you know what was going to happen, or did you just guess because he had a beer in his hand?" Martin asked.

"I see bad things that are about to happen. I can't control it and I don't get enough warning to make a difference, especially the closer I am, so it's really useless and inconvenient," Evelyn told him.

"Fascinating."
