It was the day following that Sykonetyk attack at Kohaku's house, and it was easy enough to say that everyone was just a little haggard after what all went on. Kohaku especially, being the one that went through most of it, felt a bit less energetic than he normally did. No one could even blame Kohaku for not doing his usual show-off move of raising the flag. The day mostly passed without incident until Kohaku, Doc, Plata, Yoru, and Cleo met up in the middle of the school during free period, Kohaku leaning back against a tree. "So, did you guys have to fumigate the house after last night?" Plata asked.

"Yeah. Dad was checking every gap in the house to make sure none of those little pests were still there." Kohaku replied, feeling a little annoyed at the memory.

"I hope the twins or Hakaimo don't end up with nightmares after that horror show." Doc mused.

"They're a bit hardier than that. I think Kinoko might be a lot more likely to squish a spider if she sees it, though."

Plata and Doc chuckle at that. Doc, however, then got serious again as he looked at Kohaku. "What about you, though? I'm sure there were a couple PTSD moments."

Kohaku was caught off-guard, looking away. "Ehhhhh… Just had to shake off that stupid scorpion…" He said, trying not to sound scared.

He then felt a hand clamp down on his shoulder, making him look to see Plata giving him a concerned look. "You don't need to act brave around us, amigo. You know that, right?"

Kohaku looked back at her, then noticed the others looking at him with similar looks of concern, making him sigh. "I know. I just… froze." He said. "I'm glad it was only a Duel Monster."

"A Duel Monster AND a single small scorpion that seemed to like your shoe." Cleo said with a small smile, making Plata snicker.

Kohaku gave a light, embarassed laugh. "Yeah, I guess so. I had to pick the stinger out of my sole."

"Hey guys!" They heard the voice of Dizzy call out, making them turn to see him run up. "Check this out!" He held up his D-Pad, the others crowding around to look at a message he had pulled up on the screen.

Press Release:

Attention all duelists! As of now, you know that D-Vatar Tokens have been used to help track your dueling record and help you apply for tournaments and other things; but soon they will have you take a more active role in your Duels.

Together with Industrial Illusions, Sigma Corp is proud to announce a special update to D-Vatar Tokens in time for the upcoming anniversary of the Battle City Tournament and the special adventures of Yugi Muto and his friends during that time. By locking your D-Vatar Token into the slot on your D-Pad, you now can gain special skills and abilities for yourself or a chosen Monster Card to take your Dueling to the next level. These will be called "Master Abilities".

In addition, Industrial Illusions will be releasing new cards connected to a formerly obsolete sub-Type of Monsters: Armor monsters. Now, rather than being attached to you, the Duelist, Armor monsters will be used and worn by your D-Vatars, to let you fight side-by-side with your monsters in new ways.

"D-Vatar Tokens?" Kohaku wondered. He ruffled through his pocket, pulling out a small object. It looked like a coin, colored red, blue, and yellow, with a stylized "D" on it. "Man, I almost forgot I had mine. I haven't used it in months!"

"Yeah, no kidding." Doc said, holding up a white-colored one. "When was the last time they did an event for these?"

"I forget. I think it was that Gradius event." Cleo said, looking at her gold-colored Token.

Kohaku shrugged, looking back at the announcement with a grin. "Sugee! New ways to Duel!"

Yoru looked at the announcement again. "Armor monsters? I've never heard of those before."

"I think I have." Cleo mentioned. "I remember glancing over something on them in an autobiography by Jonouchi, Yugi's best friend."

"Him? He went up against these things?" Dizzy asked.

"Yeah, apparently they actually let the Duelist fight rather than summon monsters to command. I don't remember much, but I do know they ended up passing out after that fight."

"That sounds dangerous." Doc said. "Maybe that's why it was never used beforehand."

"They must have fixed it if they're having the D-Vatars wear them now." Kohaku figured. "Does it say anything else?"

"Hang on, lemme check." Dizzy sifted through his new messages. "Stream comment, stream comment, junk mail…" Eventually he found one from the same sender. "Huh, there's a follow-up. Apparently there's a raffle, I guess, where a few Duelists will be selected as a beta tester for that big update. Basically free early access."

"Hey, you should sign up for that, Koha-kun." Plata told Kohaku. "I think you could use a little fun after the War."

Kohaku half-frowned. "It definitely sounds fun, but I bet thousands of people have already signed up." He lightly puffed his cheeks. "Kinda hurts my chances."

"And? There's always a chance!" Dizzy chirped. "Whaddya got to lose?"

Before Kohaku could respond, his D-Controller dinged to indicate a new message. "Eh?" He pulled out his Gamepad and checked his mail, seeing the new message. "Weird… There's no name on this message." Shrugging, he opened it.

Congratulations! You have been selected to be a beta tester for the upcoming release from Sigma Corp, regarding D-Vatar Tokens. Click the link to read the rules, regulations, and to claim your free download.

Kohaku's eyes were wide as coins. "Holy crap! SigmaCorp wants me to be a beta tester for the new content!"

"EH!?" All of his friends cried out, completely dumbfounded.

"Na-na… How did..." Dizzy sputtered, having trouble finding the words. "You lucky so-and-so!"

"He didn't even have to sign up!" Plata cried.

"Wait a minute." Doc said, coming to a realization. "How do you know it's actually them? Didn't you just say it didn't have a name?" As if on cue, Kohaku's D-Pad dinged again with a new message, making Doc blink. "If that's an answer, I did not plan that." Kohaku, eyebrow raised, checked the new message.

Don't say I don't do anything for you, Yudin. Consider us even for exposing what turned out to be a major risk to the company. Dad was happy to add you to the list after I brought this up. Later.

"'Dad'?" Kohaku wondered, trying to figure out who sent him this. Then it hit him: During the School War, one of his opponents outright called himself "the son of SigmaCorp's CEO". "…Yuichi-kun?"

"That brat who showed up halfway through Pyro's Duel? He set this up?" Cleo asked.

"Looks like it! But what did he mean by us being even?"

Yoru snapped his fingers. "Didn't Atmos say before the War started that he was part of SigmaCorp?" Kohaku and Dizzy nodded. "That might be why. I heard that he never showed up there afterwards."

"After he basically outed himself as the mastermind behind the War, and leading to the division in the Districts we still have, I wouldn't doubt that the suits there wouldn't be too fussed about him being gone." Dizzy said with crossed arms.

Kohaku nodded, then looked back at the message. Reading it again, he couldn't help but smile. "Well, if he's offering this kind of access, who am I to refuse?" Hitting the download link, Kohaku was taken to a forum thread titled "D-Token Update". The first message's sender was a SigmaCorp account with an icon indicating it was a moderator.

Welcome Beta Testers. This private forum will allow you help record your experience using our new content for D-Tokens. Additionally, you can share information with other Beta Testers and quiz mods if you have any particular issues or questions. Open the zip file below to update your D-Controller with this new patch.

Right below the message was a file that could be clicked on. "Not to be that guy, but is it OK for Koha-kun to be getting this before testers are even named?" Yoru wondered.

Dizzy looked over Kohaku's shoulder as Kohaku scrolled through the thread messages. "No worries there. There's already 10 others signed on here that don't have a mod symbol. My guess would be other early access duelists who have connections."

Doc rose an eyebrow as he thought about it. "That… makes sense. Gives them a pool of testers right from the start."

Kohaku held up his D-Vatar Token. "Well, it's an opportunity. Might as well see what experience I get." He placed his Token in a small slot in the bottom of the Gamepad, then tapped to download the zip file.

Dizzy got a look of the progress bar, which was filling rather slowly. "Wow, big file. Looks like this might take until the end of classes."

Kohaku checked the time. "Well, free period's almost over, so it's not like I would've got to try it out immediately." He shrugged and put his Gamepad away. "At least it's a surprise for later."

"Make sure you have it muted." Plata said. "Last thing you want is a teacher confiscating it just because it finished downloading."

Kohaku just stood there for a moment. "...Good point. I don't need Mashima-sensei on me again." He quickly whipped it back out and slid the volume to mute. The day went on as normal, but Kohaku could tell: The anticipation of what this update had for him was killing him. During one period, he couldn't help himself, waiting until the teacher wasn't looking to pull out his D-Controller and check the forum. A couple more people had joined, asking a few questions about the update. At that moment, he noticed a specific username among them that he recognized: "A2Z26". 'Wait, isn't that…?'

"Are you with us, Mr. Yudin?"

"Nyeh!" Kohaku accidentally tossed up his Gamepad in shock, making him scramble to catch it. The teacher was looking at him with a raised eyebrow, and his callout had also drawn his classmates' attention to him. His face turned into a sheepish grin. "Eh heh… Sorry. Thought I got an important message." The others laughed a bit: Typical Kohaku for some days. The teacher just shook his head with a smile before going back to the lesson, and Kohaku put his Gamepad away. School eventually ended, and as predicted, the download was done. Kohaku was looking over what it entailed as he and his friends left. "Okay, the update installed properly. It looks like these 'Master Abilities' have to be agreed on before the Duel starts, but these new Armor monsters are fair game overall. The update in general is a... timed exclusive." He looked skeptical. "I've never heard that phrase before."

"It means the update will only be exclusive to the testers for a limited time." Doc said. "After that, they become available to everyone."

"At least after they fix any bugs and issues." Dizzy mentioned. "I Dueled a couple testers before I transferred to Delta, but I don't think the patch ever went live."

Kohaku turned to look at him. "Wait, really?"

"Yeah, probably some earlier version of it or something."

"So, what are you gonna go with for your Deck Master?" Doc asked.

Kohaku put his fingers to his chin. "Hmm…" After a moment, he smiled and took out Pixel HERO - Red Blazer. "I gotta go with good old Red Blazer. The amount of times he's got me out of a jam, I don't see why he wouldn't get me through this, too." As he said that, a figure behind a nearby building scribbled on a notepad before walking away.

"So, I guess the next question is how are you gonna test it out?" Plata asked.

Kohaku smirked. "Don't worry. I already have that set up."

"Koha-kun!" At that moment, the group looked to see none other than Kowa Yukan running up to them. He stumbled a bit as he got to them, but not enough to fall over, letting him regain his balance. "I got your message. I'm surprised you wanted to Duel."

"Well, how could I not?" Kohaku replied. "I bet the update's working for you…" He smirked. "…A2Z26."

Kowa quickly realized what he was talking about. "...Oh!" He lightly hit himself on the head. "Duh, I actually forgot that you were on that, too." He rubbed the back of his head.

"Wait, you're a beta tester too, Kowa-kun?" Cleo asked. "How'd you get on the early access list?"

The blue-haired boy smiled. "I was one of the first to sign up! I didn't think I'd actually get a reply so quick, but they did! I got the message when I was in the card shop!"

"Well, I'll be…" Doc mused.

"Though, I gotta be honest, I didn't think you'd be up for this kinda thing, Koha-kun."

"Normally, I wouldn't be, but this new Deck Master System seemed interesting." Kohaku told him. "Plus, it was actually a gift."

Kowa headtilted. "Haa? A gift?"

Kohaku sweatdropped with an embarrassed smile. "I, uh… ran into the son of SigmaCorp's CEO during the School War. Apparently he decided to thank me for clearing up the problem… I guess."

"Talk about luck. Hey, how about we head to the kiosk at the mall to finish our sign in?"

"Oh yeah, I still need to do that myself." Kohaku snapped his fingers. "Let's go!"

*Some time later*

The group found themselves at a mall in Delta District, and like most days, the place was packed with customers. People going in and out of shops, hanging out in the plaza, food court, or just wherever, etc. Kohaku and co., however, were currently at a kiosk with the SigmaCorp logo. The person working the kiosk, the company's logo on his clothing, was looking at Kohaku's Gamepad. "Hmm… Kohaku Yudin." The rep said before checking his own Gamepad, scrolling through a list of names. "...Ah, there you are." He typed for a bit. "You are still using the Pixel HERO Deck, correct?"

Kohaku nodded. "Yeah."

"All right, one moment." The rep connected this Gamepad to a computer, typing on the keyboard. A printed next to the computer whirred to life and did its usual cycle for a moment before spitting out three cards. "There we go." The rep took the cards and handed them to Kohaku. "Compliments of the CEO."

Kohaku took the cards, looking at them with excitement. Three Pixel HERO Armor monsters: Avi Smasher, Avi Slicer, and Avi Shooter. "Awesome…" He bowed to the rep. "Thank you!" He got a nod from the rep in response.

Kowa then walked up, looking nervous. "I-I am part of the project myself."

"Name?"

"Kousuke Yukan."

The SigmaCorp rep looked at his Gamepad again. "Ah, here we go. AlphaMechs." He half-frowned. "Unfortunately, there are no Armor monsters to go with that, though I can print you some of the more generic ones, if you like."

"That's fine. I am missing many of the cards in the Deck."

"Which sets do you have currently?"

"Q through U and V through Z."

"Any missing Fusions?"

Kowa felt his voice catch. "I… only managed to get the first tier of them."

"Wait, sorry." Cleo butted in. "I hate to interrupt, but V-Z isn't all there is, if these are the cards I think they are?"

Kowa shook his head. "Nope!" He replied a little louder than he needed to. "They were remade a few years ago. There's one for every letter now, and one day, I'm gonna collect all of 'em!"

"Ambitious, aren't you?" The SigmaCorp rep added, making Kowa realize how loud he was geeking out, and he blushed from embarrassment. "Well, I think I can help with that." He typed on his computer again, making the printer do its work before spitting out a bunch of cards. "Here you are. The cards you're likely missing as well as a rare one, as a thank you for helping test this update."

Kowa took the cards, shaking with a grin as he looked over one of them. "YES! I've never been able to find this one!" He bowed quickly. "Thank you so much!"

"My pleasure." The rep said with a return bow. "And thank you both for participating in this beta test."

"This is gonna be so cool!" Kohaku chirped, looking at Kowa. "Kowa-kun, let's go test these out!"

"Right there with ya, Koha-kun! Let's rev this up and see what it can do!" Kowa adjusted his glasses and pulled out his D-Controller. "Just give me one moment to readjust something."

"I think this is the first time I've seen Kowa geek out like this." Dizzy said, crossing his eyes. "Guess that shows how much I've actually managed to see any of Koha-kun's other friends."

"You'll be in for a treat." Plata told him. "I Dueled beside him a few times during the School War, and this guy knows how to use those AlphaMechs."

"I'm still trying to wrap my mind around how the set used by Seto Kaiba and Chazz Princeton got fully completed." Cleo said, scratching her head. "I mean, how can you even use all 26 letters of the English Alphabet in one Deck?"

"I'm already getting a headache just thinking about it." Doc said, holding his head. "The combo potential seems endless."

"Yosh! I'm ready now!" Kowa chirped. "Over here!" He ran toward the central plaza of the mall, followed by the others, screeching to a stop in an open area. "I am so ready for this! Let's go!"

"All right…" Kohaku said, taking a position opposite Kowa. "It is ON!" He turned his visor around.

"D-Controller, switch on!" Both players hooked their D-Controllers to their arms, Gamepads on top. "D-Gazer, set!" They put on their D-Gazers, Kowa placing a blue Gazer with a yellow lens over one of his glasses' lens.

"AR VISION, LINK ESTABLISHED." The AR system said as the area around them morphed into the Augmented Reality.

DUEL!

Kohaku LP:4000

Kowa LP:4000

At that moment, Kohaku and Kowa placed their D-Tokens in their Gamepads, allowing their Disks to read the data. "TOKEN ACTIVATED. DECK MASTERS ONLINE." Red Blazer then appeared behind Kohaku, while a different monster appeared behind Kowa: A white-colored humanoid mech of some sort, having two large spikes jutting out of its back that, due to lining up with a prominent belt on its waist, gave the rough shape of an "A".

"One of your new cards?" Kohaku wondered.

"Mm-hmm. Meet A-Substitute Blaster!" Kowa chirped, the monster nodding. "You'll likely see it later."

This made the gamer boy grin. "Looking forward to it. Boku no turn! Draw!" He drew his card and quickly saw a certain card in his hand when he looked it over. "Ha ha! All right, I got one already! Pixel HERO - Avi Slicer, Shoukan!" In the Zone that Kohaku played his card, a portal emerged, but rather than a monster, his own D-Vatar leapt out of a portal with a laugh. Light armor latched onto its body after it landed, turning its shirt blue and pants tan while giving it brown boots. A sword landed in front of it, which it picked up and swung a few times before posing with it.

Pixel HERO - Avi Slicer: Lv.4 WIND Warrior/Armor ATK:?/DEF:1500

"EH?!" Kowa cried, his shock knocking his glasses a bit askew. "You got an Armor monster already?"

Kohaku shrugged with a smile. "The shuffler decided to give me a shot." The D-Vatar looked itself over with a smile, tossing its sword up, spinning around, and catching it out of the air. "Gotta say, I think it's a good look for my D-Vatar." Then, three screens appeared in front of it, showing Avi Slicer with a basic D-Vatar face in three different poses, odd text below each image. Avi Slicer headtilted, looking over them with its hand on its chin.

"What's this about?" Kowa wondered.

Kohaku read the card. "It looks like on Summon, I get to pick one of three effects for it to keep while on the field." He looked through the effects for a moment. "Hmm… This'll work. Graceful Style!" Avi Slicer touched the middle screen, making it briefly glow before it began moving far more gracefully, swaying its sword back and forth.

"What about its Attack Points?" Plata asked. "That's clearly a question mark."

"Hang on, I'm lookin'... 350 Attack Points for every 1000 Life Points I have on Summon, max of 1400."

Avi Slicer ATK:1400

"Surprised it's so low, but it's better than being super high." Doc mused.

"Believe me, I looked over one of the other ones. I can see why they did that. I Set one card facedown." A facedown appeared on Kohaku's field. "Turn end."

"Boku no turn! Draw!" Kowa drew his card. "First, I'll get out a starter model! Magic Card, hatsudo! Prepare to Combine!" He flipped a card in his hand around, and another one slid out from Kowa's Deck. "This lets me Summon a monster from my Deck that can be equipped to a Union monster in my hand. Koi, AlphaMech S-Terra Marine!" Part of the ground near Kowa began to shake as a sonar was heard pinging. Slowly, a small sand dune rose from the ground until a large submarine, painted black and sea green, emerged from within the sand. Two eyes glowed within the glass as its periscope was trained on Kohaku.

AlphaMech S-Terra Marine: Lv.4 WATER Machine ATK:1800/DEF:1500

"Next, AlphaMech U-Burst Cannon, Shoukan!" A new monster emerged behind Kowa, propelling itself forward through jets in the back that seemed to be leaving water behind. It was a blue watercraft… for a given definition of "watercraft", as it seemed to be more of just a giant mechanized cannon with a propulsion system attached to it, giving it autonomous movement, the back end of its body being designed to resemble octopus legs.

AlphaMech U-Burst Cannon: Lv.4 WATER Machine/Union ATK:1500/DEF:1300

"Geez, he's got two monsters out already." Dizzy said. "A Union monster, too. So the question is, is he going for a double attack, or equipping to supercharge one attack?"

Kowa grinned. "While I'd like to show just what my cards can do together, they'll do enough on their own. Burst Cannon, attack his monster!" Burst Cannon began making a loud whirring noise, the opening of its cannon glowing bright blue before firing off an orb of energy with a loud bang.

"Spiral Dodge!" Kohaku cried. Stopping its movements, Avi Slicer twisted its body slightly before going into a light spin that got faster and faster, leaping into the air with its sword twirling around, the energy ball striking where it used to be and exploding harmlessly.

"Eh? It had a dodge effect?"

"Yep. Graceful Style lets Avi Slicer negate one attack aimed at it per turn!" Avi Slicer landed from its leap, smoothly transitioning back to its movements pre-jump.

"Only one, huh?" Kowa mused, his glasses gleaming. "Then Terra Marine has an open shot. Fire torpedoes!" Terra Marine had a slot on its bottom open, slowly lowering out two torpedoes primed and ready to go. The mechanism holding them in place released them, allowing the torpedoes to shoot forward and strike Avi Slicer in the chest. The explosion knocked it away, making its new getup vanish and revert it to the D-Vatar's standard outfit before it hit the ground, vanishing in a cloud of pixels.

Kohaku LP:3600

Kowa let out a small breath after seeing what his monster could do. "Nice firepower. Turn end. Let's see what else you got, Koha-kun."

Kohaku adjusted his visor. "Not a bad start. Boku no turn!" He drew his card. "Avi Slicer no kouka hatsudo! Like all Pixel HEROes, I can Summon it from the Graveyard!" A purple portal opened up in the ground, Avi Slicer leaping out of it with a spinning slash. Its life counter ticked down one, then the three screens appeared over it. It chose the left screen this time, twirling its sword to hold it in a reverse grip.

Avi Slicer: 1 Life Left

"Now I release Avi Slicer! Advance Summon!" Slicer planted the tip of its sword into the ground before bursting into pixels, which recombined as a dusty wind began to blow. "Let's go! Pixel HERO - Spirit Fighter!" Walking out of the small dust storm was a tall, muscled man wearing a white, dirt-stained martial arts uniform with a black belt and the signature "P" crudely painted where the left pectoral was. His eyes, which were covered by a large red headband that doubled as a mask, were closed as he took a deep breath, opening them as he got into a fighting stance.

Pixel HERO - Spirit Fighter: Lv.6 EARTH Warrior ATK:2300/DEF:1800

"Traded the Armor for something else? I'm surprised." Kowa wondered.

"Yeah, I kinda wanted to use it some more too, but I'm gonna see what the others can do later. Spirit Fighter's effect activates!" Kohaku flipped around a card in his hand, showing it to be a monster. "By revealing a monster in my hand, Spirit Fighter gains 500 Attack Points until the Battle Phase is over!" Spirit Fighter took in a deep breath, giving off a sense of power that made his headband start to flow.

Spirit Fighter ATK:2800

"Ike! Attack U-Burst Cannon!" Opening his eyes with a fierce stare, Spirit Fighter placed his hands together and moved them to his side, blue energy gathering between them. As he charged, Kohaku began to mutter to himself. "Down, Down-Right, Right…" The energy between the warrior's hands reached its full size with a flash. "PUNCH!" Letting out a yell, Spirit Fighter thrust both hands forward, launching a fist-shaped mass of energy that barreled toward its target. Burst Cannon seemed to try and return fire, gathering energy for an attack, but the energy fist tore through it before it could ever fire a shot, making the machine explode.

Kowa LP:2700

"All right, back in the lead!" Kohaku chirped. "Let's see what else you can do, Kowa-kun. Turn end!"

Kowa shook off any force from the attack, fixing his glasses. "Boku no turn, draw!" He drew his card, smiling. "Nice. Time for a tactic change. Field Magic, Union Hangar, hatsudo!" The field around them morphed into a huge, sprawling complex with several different bays moving into various positions. "Once activated, I can add one LIGHT Machine-Type Union Monster from my Deck to my hand." A card slid out of his Deck, which he took. "Now, AlphaMech Y-Dragon Headder, Shoukan!" Union Hangar's bays began to rotate around before one marked with a "Y" moved into position, then the red light on top of it turned green before suddenly launching something out of it: A red, simple-looking dragon mech with various bits of white paint including the top of its head. This coupled with two large horns made the top of its head look like its letter.

AlphaMech Y-Dragon Headder: Lv.4 LIGHT Machine/Union ATK:1500/DEF:1600

"Next, I'll use Union Hangar's other effect, letting me equip the right monster to Y-Dragon Head straight from my Deck. Koi, AlphaMech Z-Metal Caterpillar! Link-Up!" One of the bays marked with a "Z" moved into a position facing Kohaku, then the red light on top of it turned green before suddenly launching a yellow tank-like machine out from it. Dragon Headder flew up to meet it, latching onto the tank's top and making the tank's single eye flash. "Magic Card, Recyclenection, hatsudo! I Special Summon a Machine Union monster from my Graveyard, and then I can equip it to an appropriate monster on my field. Yomigaere, U-Burst Cannon! Link-Up!" A purple portal opened up, and a small floating drone carried U-Burst Cannon back onto the field. The drone let go, allowing S-Terra Marine to float overtop of it and link to its top, effectively replacing its torpedo bay. "Now, while Caterpillar is equipped to a LIGHT AlphaMech, the equipped monster gains 500 in each stat, and while Burst Cannon is equipped to a WATER AlphaMech, the equipped monster gains 300 in each stat."

AlphaMech Y-Dragon Headder ATK:2000/DEF:2100

AlphaMech S-Terra Marine ATK:2100/DEF:1800

Kohaku tilted his head. "Okay…? I'm guessing there's more, because Spirit Fighter's still stronger."

Spirit Fighter ATK:2300

"You know how normally, the Fusions using Z-Metal Caterpillar can destroy facedown cards?"

Kohaku rose an eyebrow. "Uh… Not really?" He half-asked, already looking through his Gamepad for information. "I keep losing track of those things."

This made Kowa sweatdrop. "No one but me ever seems to." He muttered to himself before talking at full volume again. "Those Fusions typically destroy monsters on the spot. Z-Metal Caterpillar can't do that exactly, but if the equipped monster cannot destroy a monster it battles normally, the opposing monster's destroyed at the end of the Battle Phase." Kowa adjusted his glasses. "Battle Phase! Y-Dragon Headder, attack Spirit Fighter!" Y-Dragon Head's internal systems locked onto Spirit Fighter as its mouth caught fire, but then, Z-Metal Caterpillar held up one of its front limbs before launching it like a rocket. Dragon then launched a fireball that struck the back of the leg, propelling it faster while also surrounding the whole thing in flames. Spirit Fighter stood his ground, readying a fist as a strange black aura surrounded him, punching the incoming attack with all he had. "At this moment, the effect of U-Burst Cannon activates, negating my monster's destruction!" Burst Cannon began making a loud beeping noise before the multiple "octopus legs" framing the back of its body launched off it, flying toward Z. At that moment, Spirit Fighter let out a yell and put enough force into his fist to actually send Caterpillar's limb back toward it, destroying himself in the process. The eight legs attached to Caterpillar's body before expelling powerful water jets, carrying it right out of the path of its own leg, making it simply lodge into the ground. Burst Cannon's legs carried it back to its original position, allowing Caterpillar to re-attach its leg before the octopus legs to return to their own body.

Kowa LP:2400

"Battle Phase is over. Magic Card, Detach Draw, hatsudo. This lets me return up to 3 Union Monsters treated as Equip Spells to my Deck to draw the same number of cards." Electricity crackled between both machine combos before they detached from each other. Z-Metal Caterpillar flew back to its bay in Union Hangar while U-Burst Cannon merely dissipated, Kowa drawing 2 cards. "I Set two cards facedown. Turn end."

"Heck of an arsenal. Boku no turn! Draw!" Kohaku drew his card. "Magic Card, Randabrick, hatsudo!" A familiar block with flashing numbers on all sides appeared as Kohaku wound up his arm. "All right, what's it gonna be? Dice Roll!" He punched the block, which bounced across the ground before exploding into a 2.

"Dang, and he's already a little low on cards." Doc groaned.

"I thought he was gonna get a 4 again." Dizzy said. "That was all he seemed to get lately." He scratched his head. "What does 2 even do?"

Kohaku was quick to explain. "When Randabrick rolls a 2, I can Special Summon a Level 4 or lower Base monster from my Deck!"

"Que? I thought it was just a draw card!" Plata said.

"Glad I'm not the only one who thought that!" Doc added.

Kohaku gave them a look. "What did you guys think the dice roll was for, how many cards I draw?" The gang just sheepishly looked in different directions, not answering, making Kohaku feel a bit smug as he picked a card from his Deck. "Yosh. Minor Mayor of Pixel World, Tokushu Shoukan!" His monster emerged from a puff of smoke as a small, chibi-style humanoid with raccoon-like ears, a raccoon tail, and a visible fang in its mouth. It wore rather ordinary clothing (a red shirt with green leaves printed all over it) and khaki pants, though it also wore a spiffy blue top hat and a white sash around its torso. A small badge with the familiar "P" was pinned to its chest.

Minor Mayor of Pixel World: Lv.3 EARTH Beast-Warrior/Base ATK:300/DEF:300

"So, gonna bring out the big guns, huh?" Kowa mused.

"After I make a call. Minor Mayor no kouka hatsudo!" The short humanoid rummaged through his pockets for a moment before pulling out a small leaf, snapping his fingers to make the leaf transform into a cell phone in a puff of smoke before rapidly dialing a number. "When Minor Mayor is Summoned, I can send any Pixel HERO Base monster from my Deck to the Graveyard to have him copy that monster's name and Level while it's on the field!" Pressing "Send" on his phone, Minor Mayor held the phone upward, shining a symbol in the sky that resembled a gear shape as Kohaku held up a card. "I send Pixel HERO - Blue Bomber!

Minor Mayor: Lv.4

"Ikuze! Boku wa Pixel HERO - Blue Bomber, Avi Slicer, Spirit Fighter, Reberu Yon no Minor Mayor de Shinajaizu!" Minor Mayor looked to the sky to see a blue light coming down from above, leaping out of the way as Blue Bomber landed, giving him a thumbs-up. Spirit Fighter and Avi Slicer (having a more generic face) emerged from purple portals before all four pooled their energy together, forming a sphere of yellow and orange energy. "Kono go tai no tamashī o ketsugō shite, yori kyōryokuna atarashī no tamashī ga umareru! Kōzu Shoukan! Koi, Pixel HERO - Blue Bomber NT!" From out of the sphere of energy, a new hero emerged, landing on the field. It resembled Blue Bomber, but its body was far less armored, instead mostly wearing a blue full-body suit, visible lines of what looked like data going across it. Its chest and helmet bore the Pixel HEROes' symbol (the helmet had it twice as earpieces), a visor coming down over his green eyes. Like Blue Bomber, it formed a cannon out of its arm, but it was on the right hand this time, pointing it forward.

Pixel HERO – Blue Bomber NT: Quality 4 LIGHT Psychic/Composition ATK:2200/DEF:2000 5 Active Soul Towers

Kowa blinked, not recognizing this card. "That's new."

"Certainly got me out of a bit of a jam last night. Blue Bomber NT no kouka hatsudo! By deactivating a Soul Tower, I can banish an Equip Magic from my Deck to have it use its effect for one turn!" One Tower shut off as Kohaku took a card. "Equip Magic, Rebound Striker, hatsudo!" Blue Bomber NT materialized a pink sphere in his hand that resembled a baseball, tossing it up and down.

"Having him work on his fastball or something?"

"You could say that. Blue Bomber NT, attack AlphaMech Y-Dragon Headder!" Blue Bomber NT put his hands together, training his gaze on the dragon mech before winding back like a pitcher, throwing the ball as hard as he could. A light in the middle of the ball began to blink as it traveled.

"Magic Card, Unauthorized Reactivation, open!" Kowa's facedown flipped up. "This card lets me equip a Machine-Type Union Monster to the right kind of monster straight from my hand or Deck. Koi, Strengthening Support Mecha - Heavy Weapon, Link-Up!" Red lights activated from darkness before a gray, white, and red jet-like mecha rocketed into view. Heavy Weapon slowly hovered down to behind Y-Dragon Head before its body began to unfold, its front splitting apart to flank Y-Dragon Head with two powerful cannons while its back converted into odd legs, planting themselves firmly on the ground to give it stability. "While equipped, Y-Dragon Headder gains 500 ATK and DEF."

Y-Dragon Headder ATK:2000/DEF:2100

"Still not enough to beat me, but that wasn't what you were trying to do, was it?" Kohaku asked despite already knowing the answer.

"I hate to waste a power-up, but my Support Mech is just to take the hit, since the standard thing with Unions is to be destroyed in place of the monster they are equipped to." The baseball's blinking light turned to a full glow with a loud beep, Dragon Headder ejecting from its new equipment to let it be hit, the ball exploding and taking it with it.

Kowa LP:2200

"Gotta say, I should have known better than to accept a Duel with you, Koha-kun. I know I'm not much of a match for your tactics."

"It took guts to go through it anyway." Kohaku shrugged. "I'm not here to win, though. I just wanna see what the Deck you're going for is capable of!"

Kowa laughed. "You and me both, my friend. My big dream is to be able to use all 26 Alphamechs in one Deck, and use as many of their Fusions as I can."

"That sounds like a really hard goal. Hopefully you'll be at a high enough level to manage that." Kohaku took a card from his hand. "I Set one card facedown. Turn end!"

"Boku no turn. Draw!" He looked at the two cards in his hand, then at his facedown. After a few seconds of tapping his foot, he spoke. "I'll give you a choice,Koha-kun. Do you want to see something new, or something remade?"

This surprised the gamer boy. "Eh? Uh…"

"Do you want to see how V-Z changed in this new archetype, or do you want to see what the newly added Q-U can do?"

Kohaku glanced aside, rubbing the back of his head. "Jeez, put me on the spot, why don't you?" He mumbled to himself before looking back to Kowa. "Well, if V-Z actually have some new stuff to show, let's see it."

Kowa grinned. "Ask and you shall receive. AlphaMech X-Brain Blaster, Shoukan!" Union Hanger rotated until the X bay was pointed forward, launching the machine within. It was painted blue and gold and was vaguely humanoid, having a disc-like bottom to its torso in place of legs. Instead, its body was dominated by its large arms and twin cannon barrels pointing from its shoulders. Green electronic lines criss-crossed its head as, from its view, it assessed the field in mere seconds, the words "PLAN SET" appearing on its screen before it folded its arms.

AlphaMech X-Brain Blaster: Lv.4 LIGHT Machine ATK:1800/DEF:1500

"Now, I could use Union Hangar to get another Z-Metal Caterpillar on my field, but since I already have one, I think I'll just use it again. Trap, hatsudo! Quick Ride! This equips a Union Monster from my Graveyard to an appropriate monster on my field!" A purple portal opened up, allowing Z to slowly crawl its way back onto the field. X turned to look at it, and Z's eye glowed the same green as X's circuits before it immediately moved into position, allowing X to hook to Z's top. "I also get to draw a card since Brain Blaster was equipped with a Union monster, but now all three are in place! I banish Alphamechs X, Y, and Z from my field!" X made a few beeping noises before pointing forward as if giving an order, detaching from Z. Z's eye flashed before it locked its front and back legs together, combining the individual tank treads before laying them on the ground and opening a hatch on its back, making its body vaguely resemble a sideways Z from above. Dragon Headder roared before flying overtop of it, retracting its legs before lowering on top of it, slotting in perfectly with the Y-shape of its head front and center, Z locking it in place. "Three machines, powerful on their own, now unite their powers into one force! Link-Up Fusion! AlphaMech XYZ-Triad Cannon!" Brain Blaster had the word "ENGAGE" flash on its screen before it crossed its arms in an X shape and lowered onto a hatch now open on Dragon Headder's back, connecting to the lower machine's circuitry instantly. Dragon Headder roared as the spikes of its wings opened up, revealing what appeared to be two control levers that rose to X's hand level. Grabbing hold of both, X made cannons open both in Y's mouth and Z's combined legs, pointing its own cannons forward while speaking in a robotic tone: "LINK-UP COMPLETE."

AlphaMech XYZ-Triad Cannon: Lv.8 LIGHT Machine/Fusion ATK:2800/DEF:2600

"Sugee!" Kohaku said with a laugh. "That was so cool! It was like the mechas out of a toku show!"

Kowa smiled, rubbing under his nose. "They stepped up the design game in recent years, but the looks aren't half as good as the effects. For one, all Alphamech Fusions have the effect of returning other Alphamechs to the Deck to draw cards. In Triad Cannon's case, I can return Terra Marine to my Deck to draw a card." X formed a small screen in front of it, typing on a digital keyboard, an image of S visible on the screen. With another tap of the keyboard, the word "RECALL" appeared over both, and S made a beeping noise in response before vanishing from the field. Kowa returned the cards into his Deck, let it auto-shuffle, and drew a card. "Now, Triad Cannon no kouka hatsudo! Target his facedown and destroy it!" X took aim at one of Kohaku's facedowns before hitting the button on top of the left lever. Z's eyes flashed before its leg cannons fired, striking the facedown Game Pause and obliterating it. "That was a close one. Now, Triad Cannon, attack his monster!" All five cannons were aimed at Blue Bomber NT, gathering energy in each barrel that seemed to criss-cross to each one, giving off the image of an X, Y, and Z overlapped. Then, the head hit both switches, firing all five shots at once, which converged on the monster and eradicated him with no resistance.

Kohaku LP:3000

"I Set one card facedown! Turn End!" A facedown appeared on Kowa's field.

"Boku no turn!" Kohaku drew his card. "I revive Pixel HERO - Spirit Fighter using its effect!" A purple portal opened up, allowing Kohaku's martial arts hero to return. However, his life counter immediately hit "x0", turning red to reflect the danger.

Spirit Fighter: 0 Lives Left

"Also, Pixel HERO - Splat Trooper, Shoukan!" His new monster came out doing a little breakdance as a bit of funky music played, but as they did, an orange paint-like substance was being splattered all over the place, covering part of Kohaku's field in the stuff. Eventually the figure did a handstand, revealing themselves to be a young teenage girl with orange hair in two large pigtails, a white shirt stained with multicolored blotches, short black shorts, sneakers, headphones, a skater beanie with the "P" symbol on it, and goggles over her eyes, pointing a very crude-looking, almost toy-like gun forward, the same orange substance dripping from the nozzle.

Pixel HERO - Splat Trooper: Lv.4 WATER Aqua ATK:1700/DEF:1100

"Splat Trooper no kouka hatsudo. Once per turn, I can tag your monster with a Splat Counter." Splat Trooper twirled her gun with a cocky grin before aiming it at Triad Cannon, firing off a rapid burst of paint shots. The shots didn't seem to actually hurt it, but it did leave much of it stained, including Z's eye.

"And the reason behind the new paint job is?" Kowa asked, scratching his head.

"Pretty simple: You're on Splat Trooper's turf now. Any monster that battles with a Splat Counter loses half its Attack and Defense Points. Show it off, Splat Trooper! Attack Triad Cannon!" Splat Trooper actually reached into a puddle of ink, pulling out another toy-like design before hooking her gun to it. The device unfolded and shifted into the form of a large bazooka, which she aimed at the combined mecha. At that point, the ink on its body began to spread, causing its body to start rusting.

Triad Cannon ATK:1400

The girl hung her tongue out the side of her mouth as she pulled the trigger, launching a large orb of paint from the bazooka. "Trap, hatsudo! AlphaMech Defense Force!" Kowa's facedown flipped up. "By sending a card from my hand to the Graveyard, one AlphaMech on my field cannot be destroyed this turn! Q-Silver Manta, defend!" The sound of something being launched was heard before a silver manta-shaped mecha with a prominent red gem on its body soared in front of Triad Cannon, its gem glowing before projecting a red barrier that the paintball splatted against, sending the rest of it elsewhere.

Kowa LP:2000

"Not bad, but it doesn't keep the damage from rolling in! Spirit Fighter, your turn!" Spirit Fighter beat his fists together before rushing forward, blue energy covering his fist as he slammed it into Silver Manta's barrier. Though it did nothing to the barrier, the energy coming off his fist made Kowa shield himself with his arms.

Kowa LP:1100

"Nice! Knocking that LP down piece by piece!" Plata cried.

"Gotta say, I kinda feel bad for Kowa-kun." Dizzy mused. "Here he was all excited about getting his new cards, and now it's like lady luck is against him on the draws."

"I'm no expert on this Deck, but as Koha-kun would probably say, the Duel's not over so long as both of them have Life Points." Doc said.

"Turn end."

"Boku no turn. Draw." Kowa gently drew his card, going into thought. 'What to do, what to do? I don't have much else in my hand.' He looked at his monster. 'Heck, I don't think I can do much of anything with just Triad Cannon. If I could just get the other AlphaMechs into my hand. But I just used up Q, and all I have is T. How can I…' His gaze drifted to Substitute Blaster, and his expression changed. He looked back and forth between his Deck Master and his hand, and the pieces finally came together. "I'm an idiot!" He cried, lightly hitting himself in the head.

"What happened?" Kohaku asked.

"Here we are testing a new system, and we haven't even used it! Well, let me be the first! I use A-Subtitute Blaster's Deck Master Skill!" A-Substitute Blaster did a quick heroic pose with a flash of its eyes before backflipping into the air, transforming its body into what looked like a giant pistol. "By banishing 3 Alphamechs from my Deck, I can add 3 AlphaMechs with those same names to my hand, along with an AlphaMech Magic Card of my choice!" The trigger was pulled, making Blaster shoot a flare into the sky. Its explosion formed three letters: R, U, and S. Seven cards slid out of Kowa's Deck, three of which he pocketed before putting the rest in his hand. "Time to bust out the big guns! AlphaMech Formation - QRSTU, hatsudo! I banish all 5 WATER AlphaMechs from my hand and Graveyard to bring out the one thing that can save me right now! AlphaMechs, assemble!" Five portals cracked themselves open in space, something flying toward the entrances. "Q-Silver Manta!" A low hum was heard as the silver manta-shaped mecha emerged, red gem gleaming. "R-Pressure Rocket!" Something shot out of the second portal at incredible speeds, flying around to reveal a sleek, streamlined purple watercraft designed to look like a shark. "S-Terra Marine!" A sonar ping heralded the return of Kowa's submarine. "T-Ocean Thunder!" Electricity crackled from the fourth portal as another mecha emerged with a slow spin, colored pink and resembling a jellyfish with electricity coming from its tentacles. "U-Burst Cannon!" The cannon mecha propelled itself out of the last portal with a blast. Kowa threw his hand up, his glasses gleaming. "Link-Up Fusion!"

The front and back sections of Terra Marine disconnected from the middle section before reattaching at different angles, shifting its parts around to resemble a boxy robot chest, a robotic head emerging from the top and two arm joints from the sides. This new body dropped down on top of the jellyfish-like mech which had opened its top, making it look like a battle skirt. The large cannon split itself in half from barrel to stern, the pieces folding together and connecting to Ocean Thunder's bottom, becoming legs with feet folding into place. Meanwhile, Silver Manta detached its wings and tail while Pressure Rocket's front separated from its back, the dorsal fin launching off. Pressure Rocket's front attached to the right arm joint, the shark head acting as the hand, while Silver Manta's body formed the left arm, a hand popping out as it attached to the shoulder. "Kanzen! AlphaMech QRSTU-Neptune Dreadnought!" The ray wings attached to either side of the right arm while the left grabbed the long manta tail, the dorsal fin attaching to the very end to create a large spear, which it pointed at Kohaku.

AlphaMech QRSTU-Neptune Dreadnought: Lv.8 WATER Machine/Fusion ATK:3000/DEF:2800

"Whoa…" Dizzy breathed, feeling like he had to step back away from the giant robot.

"So this is what the new AlphaMechs are capable of." Doc said in awe.

Kowa, however, wasted no time. "Using Neptune Dreadnought's effect, I can shuffle up to 3 of my banished AlphaMechs into my Deck to draw that many cards!" Neptune's vision had images of R-Pressure Rocket, S-Terra Marine, and U-Burst Cannon appear, then the word "RECALL" flashed across them. All three mechas appeared from dimensional warps and flew back into the depths of Union Hangar as Kowa drew his cards. "Triad Cannon no kouka hatsudo! Target Splat Trooper!" Brain Blaster aimed Z's cannons at the young girl before clicking the lever, launching blasts that obliterated her. "Saa, ikuze! Neptune Dreadnought, Attack Spirit Fighter!" Neptune Dreadnought held its spear in front of itself, Ocean Thunder's tentacles starting to crackle with electricity that crawled its way up the body, down the arm, and finally charging the blade at the end. Then it pulled its arm back before thrusting the spear forward, the electricity projecting a far longer electric blade that lanced right through Spirit Fighter, destroying him.

Kohaku LP:2300

"Now, Triad Cannon! Direct attack!" With no monsters in its path, XYZ's systems began to regain their functionality, the odd paint fading from its body. Dragon Headder opening its mouth again. (ATK:2800) X shook its head before locking onto Kohaku, all cannons charging power.

"Trap, hatsudo! Glitch Pix Gardna! This card negates your attack!" Kohaku's Trap released a large shield made of 3D pixels just as Triad Cannon launched its combined blast, striking the shield. A large crack went across the shield before it and the attack disappeared.

"Kuso! I was so close!"

"Hey, if I didn't have that card, you would've had me." Kohaku said. "I gotta say, Kowa-kun, that new card looks awesome, and I don't even know any of its other effects yet."

"You will soon enough, Kohaku. Turn end."

"Boku no turn! Draw!" Kohaku drew his card. "Well, you showed me your Skill. Now it's my turn! I activate Red Blazer's Master Skill! With it, I can Special Summon Pixel HERO - Red Hammer from my hand or Deck and set it to any Level I want! Ike! Red Flare - Level 5!" Red Blazer's gloves caught fire before it shot a fireball at the ground, which spread into five smaller fires before a gateway opened up between them. From out of the gate, Kohaku's red-clad, hammer-wielding hero leapt out, hefting his hammer over his shoulder.

Pixel HERO - Red Hammer: Lv.5 (due to Skill, normally Lv.4) FIRE Warrior/Base ATK:1600/DEF:1400

By that point, their Duel had attracted a few spectators, doing a mix of simply watching and talking amongst themselves. Among them, one seemed to be taking notes of some sort as they looked at Red Blazer. "Hmm… That one looks important…"

"Ikuze! Avi Slicer, Minor Mayor, Blue Bomber to, Level 5 Red Hammer, Synergize!" Red Hammer gave a whistle, and Avi Slicer, Minor Mayor, and Blue Bomber returned from purple portals. The monsters pooled their energy together, forming a sphere of red, green, orange, and yellow energy. "By merging these four souls, a stronger new soul shall be born! Kozu Shoukan! Arawareyo, Pixel HERO - Red Twister!" The energy sphere shot into the air while spinning rapidly, leaving a small tornado in its wake as it morphed into a humanoid shape. Then, the same figure began to quickly descend with the same spinning motion, slamming into the ground with a huge burst of wind. Slowly it stood up, revealing itself to be similar to Red Blazer, only wearing a red-and-orange flight suit, white gloves, the "P" symbol on the front, and propeller blades on top of his red helmet. Smirking his brown-mustached mouth, he tapped his helmet twice to make a visor come down over his eyes before doing a quick spin jump and battle pose.

"Now this looks like my kind of monster!" Dizzy chirped.

Yoru smiled. "Red Hammer's full of surprises, Dizzy."

"Now I know what you're thinking, Kowa-kun. 'It can't beat either of my monsters.'" Kohaku said. "And you're right, but… that's why I'm reviving Splat Trooper by its effect!" Splat Trooper emerged from a purple portal with a breakdance spin, pointing her gun forward as her life counter decreased.

Splat Trooper: 1 Life Left

"Splat Trooper, give Neptune Dreadnought the same makeover!" Twirling her gun, Splat Trooper unloaded a barrage of ink shots all over the aquatic mecha, making it have to shield its face with its arm.

Neptune Dreadnought: 1 Splat Counter

"I had a feeling you might try that, Kohaku…" Kowa mused. "…which is why I waited until now to do this. Neptune Dreadnought no kouka hatsudo!" Kohaku gave an "Eh?" in response. "I banish one card from my hand, and my monster forces you to skip your Battle Phase!" Kowa took a card and threw it to Dreadnought, which moved its shark head hand back and chomped down, absorbing the card. "Ike! Oceanic Boundary!" Blue energy billowed from the teeth before it pointed the jaws at Kohaku, opening them to fire a powerful beam that spread outward. The beam eventually took the form of a large energy net, which surrounded Kohaku and his monsters, blocking them off from Kowa's side.

"Kuso!" Kohaku groaned, snapping his fingers. "And I was all set up, too!"

"Shoulda been just a little bit quicker."

"Mou… I'll have to find my way out of this somehow." Kohaku shrugged. "Turn end." The energy net faded, but as it did, the giant mech seemed to slump forward slightly as it seemed to lose some power. "Eh? Is your robot's battery low?"

"Something like that…" Kowa said, lightly scratching his head. "Aside from banishing a card, the one downside of skipping your Battle Phase is that Dreadnought can't attack him this turn. I'm not gonna let that stop me, though. Boku no turn, draw!" He drew his card, looking over his hand. 'Hmm… now, should I play it safe and just stick with Triad Cannon, or should I go for the gold?' He lightly tapped his chin with his cards. 'Well, I'll let this decide for me.' "Triad Cannon no kouka hatsudo! Target: Red Twister!" Triad Cannon aimed Z's blasters at Red Twister, charging energy.

"Red Twister no kouka hatsudo! By using a Soul Tower, I can keep him from being destroyed!" One of Twister's Towers shut off as his propeller whirred to life, Red Twister leaping into the air with a spin just as Triad Cannon fired, spiraling upward and letting the attack hit nothing but ground. "Like his other forms, though, his effects are negated for a while if I do this." However, as he came back down, a "power down" sound was heard as some of the color began to fade from his suit.

Red Twister: 3 Active Soul Towers

"Guess I have my answer. So let's do this!" Kowa pushed his glasses up. "A-Substitute Blaster, Shoukan!" Kowa's Deck Master activated rockets in its back and took the sky, doing a loop before landing on his field.

AlphaMech A-Substitute Blaster: Lv.4 DARK Machine/Union ATK:1400/DEF:1400

"Since it's a DARK Monster, I can't make use of my Hangar, but that doesn't mean I'm screwed. Equip Magic, Different Dimension Revival, activate! I discard one card, and Special Summon one of my banished monsters." He discarded his card, and space began to warp on Kowa's field. "Koi, Alphamech W-Catapult Winger!" A portal tore itself open in space before a machine rocketed out and into the sky, coming back down after a loop to reveal itself as a blue mecha that appeared to be two small jets stuck together, its back designed with a launcher and six different wings on its two bodies for maximum aerodynamics.

AlphaMech W-Catapult Winger: Lv.4 LIGHT Machine/Union ATK:1300/DEF:1500

Kowa's glasses shined. "Saa, Substitute Blaster no kouka hatsudo! As its name implies, it can treat itself like any one other AlphaMech, so long as I send that Alphamech from my Main Deck to the Graveyard!" A card popped out of his Deck. "A-Substitute Blaster, copy V-Jet Liger!" A-Substitute Blaster leapt up before its limbs tucked into its main body, which shifted around and unfolded parts that seemingly shouldn't have been there. Before long, it had made itself look like a cross between a wild cat and a fighter plane, though it retained the same white color scheme. "Know where I'm going with this?"

"Going for the biggest gun you got, I bet." Kohaku replied.

"Not quite the biggest. That one's not even printed yet. Just gonna bring out a classic reborn." He snapped his fingers. "V-Jet Liger, W-Catapult Winger! Link-up Fusion!" The copied V-Jet Liger and W-Catapult Winger flew upward and adjusted their flight paths, allowing the former to land on top of the latter, W's twin jets locking it in place. As it did, the copied Liger's body completely changed color, taking on a yellowish-orange to simulate the basis creature's fur while the rest of its body become bright green. "Kanzen! AlphaMech VW-Wild Launcher!"

AlphaMech VW-Wild Launcher: Lv.6 LIGHT Machine/Fusion ATK:2000/DEF:2100

"And now the big finale! VW, XYZ! Link-up Fusion!" Both machines flew into the air, but then the five individual parts disconnected from each other, then disassembled into multiple pieces. W's jets combined with V's feet before linking to Y's body, forming legs. Then X hooked on top of Y before Z's treads were grabbed by its own hands, forming even larger arms. Y's wings hooked to its back as the rest of V and Z equipped to its back, V's cat head laying itself over X's head. "Kanzen! AlphaMech VWXYZ-Alpha Superior!" X's eye lit up behind its new helmet before it took charge of its new combined body, placing its new arms to its sides with cannons pointed forward.

AlphaMech VWXYZ-Alpha Superior: Lv.8 LIGHT Machine/Fusion ATK:3000/DEF:2800

Kohaku stepped back a bit. "So that's… the top combination of the original set…"

"Kohaku can still win this, right?" Cleo asked, feeling a little nervous. "I mean, even if that thing has a similar effect to the original, Dreadnought can't attack. So, he can still turn it around, right?"

"If the original is what I think it is, I think there might be a chance." Doc replied. "Koha-kun's got a good amount of Life Points left, so he could likely survive this."

"He could if I didn't have this." Kowa held up a card without showing what it was. "Since some of you guys know the original V-Z so well, let me ask, was there a way to separate the pieces cleanly?"

Doc blinked. "Uh… Not really. You banished them, so De-Fusion's out of the question."

"Well, there's a way now. Magic Card, Alphamech Unlinking, hatsudo!" Neptune Dreadnought began to shake, electricity crossing its body. "I return Neptune Dreadnought to my Extra Deck, and shuffle Alphamechs Q, R, T and U back into my Deck to Special Summon their Fusion forms!" Neptune threw its spear up before completely disassembling, its parts recombining into their original forms. S-Terra Marine vanished from sight as Q and R linked together, R acting as a powerful booster for the manta vehicle while T and U merged to charge the cannon with electricity. "Kanzen! AlphaMech QR-Shark Seeker! AlphaMech TU-Electro Laser!"

Kowa smiled, his hands on his hips. "How do you like your chances now?"

"That's a hell of an armada…" Kohaku breathed, looking over the line of robots Kowa had assembled. "…but I can take 'em!"

"We'll see about that! First step: Alpha Superior no kouka hatsudo!" Alpha Superior scanned the battlefield before locking on to Red Twister, readying its front cannons. "In one fell swoop, Alpha Superior is going to banish Red Twister, and force Splat Trooper into Defense Position! Ike, Ultima Destroyer!" Alpha Superior's frontal cannons began to charge energy, but then, it gave a heavy flap with its wings, sending a powerful wind their way. Red Twister stood against it no problem, but Splat Trooper wasn't so lucky, being knocked off her feet and onto her back. (DEF:1100) Red Twister glanced over at her, but as he did, Alpha Superior fired, piercing right through the hero and causing him to vanish into nothing. "Now, Shark Seeker, attack Splat Trooper!" The shark-manta combo mecha gathered energy into its engine as the manta's gem glowed red, then the engine exploded with a powerful thrust, charging toward Trooper while covered in a red forcefield. One impact later, Trooper was sailing all the way into the next District from the impact.

"Kuso… Glitch Pix Gardna no kouka hatsudo! Since a Pixel HERO monster was destroyed, I can Summon this card from my Graveyard as a monster with the same Defense Points!" A mass of 3D pixels emerged from a purple portal, recombining into an 8-bit duplicate of Splat Trooper.

Glitch Pix Gardna DEF:1100

"It won't help you much. I'm not one for overkill, but I will say that Alpha Superior can change the stance of its attack target."

"What?!" Kohaku cried, making Kowa laugh.

"But don't worry. I'm not gonna end it that way. Electro Laser, attack with Energized Flash!" U's cannon was aimed at the duplicate, and T began pouring electricity into it as it charged up, unleashing a bright blue laser of lightning that scattered the pixels on impact, electrocuting and making all of them disappear. "And now the final move. Alpha Superior, take aim." X-Brain Blaster's mind formed a crosshair in its line of sight, sweeping the battlefield before sighting in on Kohaku, the words "TARGET LOCKED" appearing in front of it. "Sorry about this."

Kohaku looked over his options, which were basically non-existent, then looked back at Alpha Superior. It was clear to him that this Duel was over… and all he did was shrug. "Eh, can't win 'em all."

Kowa snapped his fingers. "Victory Charge Rocket Dance!" All of a sudden, numerous ports opened up all over the robot's body, X actually saying the word "LAUNCH." Every single opened port launched a missile, upwards of 30 total, that traveled the air in erratic paths before finally zeroing in on their target. Kohaku shielded himself with his arms as the missiles struck the ground all around him, covering him in a small sea of explosions on all fronts.

Kohaku LP:0 - LOSER

The smoke from the attack took a while to clear, but when it did, Kohaku was still standing. Eventually everyone could see that he was smiling, and then he broke out laughing. "Nice job, Kowa-kun! You finally beat me!"

Kowa blinked, the reality of the situation hitting. "…I won? I… I actually won!" He grinned widely, double fistpumping. "YOSHA!" The crowd around cheered and clapped as well, alerting the duelists that they weren't alone anymore. And as the crowd gave praise, one figure made his way away from everything. Kowa and Kohaku didn't really know what to do, so they just awkwardly waved at the crowd.

"Why did you have monsters standing next to you?" One person asked. "Was that some new card effect?"

"That's… uh…" Kowa's voice caught in his throat, not really sure what to say.

"That's part of a new update to the game coming soon." The boys turned to see the SigmaCorp representative that had given them their new cards walking up to them. "These two boys are part of a growing group of testers to see how well it can hold up in use. Be on the lookout how when this update launches." The crowd started to talk amongst themselves, their chatter clearly showing excitement at what's to come. The rep then spoke to Kohaku and Kowa. "Thank you for your contributions, boys. The cards printed are yours to keep. Hopefully you have more exciting Duels with them."

Kohaku and Kowa smiled at each other before bowing to the rep. "Arigatou!"

A while later, the group was leaving the mall, Kohaku with his hands behind his head. "Man, you had me there, Kowa-kun. I never would have thought you'd have a card to make me not fight."

"That series is all about keeping my opponent at bay." Kowa replied. "I'm just glad I got the cards I needed to use it."

"Lucky you had the beta for the Deck Master systems, you mean."

"You don't need to phrase it like that, Koha-kun." Plata said, feeling a little annoyed.

"Hey, honest, I'm not calling it a cheat." Kohaku said with his hands up. "I'm calling it like it can be: The Destiny Draw."

"Uh… the what?" Kowa asked.

"You know… when the greats like Yugi, or Yusei, or even Yuma had their backs to the wall, all it took was one draw to turn defeat to victory. That's what some who follow their careers call The Destiny Draw."

"Oh…"

"Yeah, I remember that. It made it into a few video games based on the card game, too." Yoru said.

"Don't I know it. I got stuck on one level for weeks because of it." Dizzy rolled his eyes as he said this.

Kohaku looked at Red Blazer's card, grinning. "This Deck Master System is gonna make the game that much more fun when it gets released."

As Kohaku, Dizzy, and Kowa kept talking to each other, Doc, Cleo, and Plata started to fall a little bit behind. " I'm glad this got his mind off the whole Alphomega situation." Doc told the girls, trying to keep his voice down. "Lord knows this whole thing's been dragging him down a little."

"For now, at least." Cleo also stayed quiet. "I doubt it'll last for that long."

"As long as we don't bring it up, it should be fine for a little while longer." Plata whispered as well, the three looking at their friend with concern.

Meanwhile, on a rooftop, the unknown figure watched the group of teens as he jotted down a few more notes on his pad before closing it. Once he did, he pulled a gray robe seemingly out of nowhere and put it on in one fluid motion, pulling up the hood and donning a cerulean mask with a sad, crying look on it. He then snapped his fingers, and 5 others in darkly colored robes appeared behind him, kneeling with eyes looking down. "You summoned us, Master?" One of them, a woman with a much cruder mask with a happy expression, asked.

"Yes, indeed I have." Crying Mask replied, his voice indicating he was male, pointing down at the teens. "Look over there. You can see the one we're after."

Another of the quintet, who had a crude mask with a winking face, walked over and looked down, following the point to see Kohaku. "The one with the triple-layer hair? Looks like a rube. I wonder if a new wallet would tempt him." Another man. He was quickly dope-slapped by another figure, whose crude mask looked angry.

"Save the sales pitch for someone who actually has a job." The angry masked figure, another woman, said with a growl.

"Enough! I'll handle him personally, but for now I want you to deal with his allies." Crying Mask rose his voice to address them. "Based on my information, the three gaijins are going to awaken next. I want you to either stop them, or see what makes them tick."

"Shouldn't be too hard." Happy Mask mentioned.

"Not to be that guy, but what if we accidentally… y'know? Hurry it along?" The fourth figure, a man whose crude mask had closed eyes, asked.

Crying Mask sighed. "Then it just shows that you aren't as good as I thought you were."

Happy Mask giggled. "Burn!"

"Oh, screw off." Closed-Eye Mask groaned. "We probably wouldn't be able to stop them even if we tried."

Angry Mask suddenly got in his face. "Are you insulting me?! I saw you side-eye me!"

Closed-Eye Mask didn't even flinch, he just lightly pushed her back. "Just not willing to take the blame if it ain't my fault in the end."

"Regardless," Crying Mask said as Angry Mask swatted her associate's hand away, "while defeating them would do well for our agenda, I can't help but think that our Master would rather he did reach full power."

The final member of their group, wearing a crude mask with a depressed look, didn't actually speak, but their thoughts made their opinion clear. "...This isn't going to end well…"

"Either way, we have a plan in place, and I expect you all to play your parts." Crying Mask said, turning back to look down at Kohaku. "If we destroy him, then mission accomplished, but if he defeats us… well, with enough preparation, it might get us one step closer to his return, anyway."

The five of them all agreed vocally (even Depressed Mask), but Closed-Eye Mask rolled his eyes behind his mask. 'Oh, brother.'

*Later That Night*

Kohaku finished his nighttime routine and returned to his room, yawning. As he plopped down on his bed, something caught his eye. He looked over to his stack of Game Cards, which had a familiar glow coming from them. "Huh? What now?" He looked through them and pulled out the Silver Card, which was indeed glowing again. "Did I solve another riddle or something?" Even though he knew he probably should save it for the morning, his curiosity got the better of him, and he slid the card into his Gamepad.

The screen turned on, and he was quickly greeted by the sight of Kukiran on a blank screen when he did. "Hey, sorry to call." She said as she flitted around the screen. "Am I bothering you?"

"Uh… Not really?" Kohaku told her, wanting to be polite to her.

"No, I can tell from your tone it might be. Sorry." Kukiran moved in a way that Kohaku thought was a bow, as close as possible to one since she was a ball of light with wings. "It's hard to tell a concept of time when everything's the same in here."

Kohaku rubbed the back of his head. "Maybe there's some way you can at least link up to the Gamepad's internal clock or something?" He suggested. "I dunno, this thing's still a mystery to me."

Kukiran moved as if she had just shrugged. "In any case, there was one more thing I wanted to show you before we got interrupted last night." This got Kohaku to raise an eyebrow in curiosity. "If you're interested, just touch the screen and see what happens." She ended that with a playful giggle that seemed more suited for a pixie than a fairy. Despite this, Kohaku still went along with it as he tapped the screen. In an instant, a bright flash came from the screen and filled his eyes, making him unable to see as he was turned into energy and sucked into the screen, the Gamepad falling and clattering on the floor.

At that moment, Sokudo was moving by Kohaku's room, hearing the clatter. He got curious and slightly pushed open the door. "Playing another game, Kohaku-nii?" He asked, but when he looked around, he saw no one there, nothing except Kohaku's Gamepad on the floor. "Kohaku-nii?" He called out again, entering the room while still looking around.

Meanwhile, Kohaku felt his vision finally start to fade back in, blinking multiple times and rubbing the spots out of them. "Damn, that was bright…" He muttered to himself, but then he took a moment to look around. The ground didn't look anything like he remembered, and for some reason, he felt like he was really high up. "Huh? Where am I?"

"That didn't hurt, did it?"

Hearing the voice right next to him, Kohaku turned and stepped back slightly in surprise when he saw Kukiran right in front of him. "…No." He managed to reply almost on impulse. He looked around, and the area started to look… familiar. Part of the land looked to be made out of clouds, including what he was standing on. He heard water nearby and turned to see a small beach with tropical trees. Nearby was a large spherical mass of water suspended in midair. The gears in his head were starting to turn. "Wait." He looked past her, seeing a simple cabin that he remembered instantly: He saw it when he first brought his avatar to World 2. "No way… Am I inside the game world?!" His voice echoed throughout the empty sky.

"You better believe it!" Kukiran answered happily with a backflip.

Kohaku just looked around, dumbfounded, clearly having trouble taking this in. "I knew this place wasn't normal… b-but I didn't think it could do this!"

"After you entered the boss fight directly last time," Kukiran explained, playfully circling him, "you became able to enter this place at will. Meaning in public, you can just use your D-Vatar to not shock anyone."

Kohaku clearly had a question mark over his head while she said that. "But don't I seem a little out of place in here otherwise?" He asked.

Kukiran just giggled. "If you mean the fact you were in PJs in the real world, you're not now."

Kohaku, confused, looked down to see that rather than his pajamas, he was now dressed the exact way he had decorated his D-Vatar. "Wha... how..."

"You and your D-Vatar are linked whenever you show up here." The fairy went on. "No one who looks at the screen would even be able to tell the difference."

"Wait, Kohaku-nii?" A voice suddenly echoed around the pair. "Is that actually Kohaku-nii in there?"

"Eh? Sokudo?" Kohaku looked around him again, confused, before something suddenly started to sink in: The voice was coming from ABOVE him. Looking up, Kohaku could see a giant version of his younger brother's face staring "down" at him with wide-eyes. "EEEEEEEHHHHH?!" In the real world, Sokudo watched his brother's D-vatar freak out as if he actually heard him.

Kukiran's response was... a lot more subdued. "So much for a fourth wall."

Vile: Yeah, it was kind of a filler chapter that I probably should've finished a long time ago, but honestly I still had fun working with the AlphaMechs. I made the idea long ago (before we even got the ABC series, which BTW are not appearing here), and GSTART gave me a good way to finally make use of them. If you guys liked this chapter, leave a review for me, and I'll try to not take forever to get the next update out. Ja ne for now!

Computer Voice: Vile, logging out.
