DISCLAIMER: I don't Own Ghost Hunt

[Not Edited]

The whole room they're in is very tense as Mai and Naru stared seriously at each other. The other SPR is still confused but Masako and Lin were shaken by Mai's statement. Naru even confirmed Mai's thoughts. Ayako, who is the most curious one, stepped out and disrupted their staring contest.

"Eugene Davis? Oliver Davis's brother? Why is Naru searching for his brother? Is he lost?"

Mai was the first one to look away. Naru stopped biting his lip and released the tension on his body. His face returned to normal and sat on the bed. He rested his head on his palm as he met everyone's eyes. A few seconds after contemplating, he decided to answer them.

"Yes. He had been missing for more than a year now."

"Did you used psychometry? How is it that you couldn't find him until now? Is he hiding from you?" Bou-san asked him, joining Ayako in questioning their young boss.

"He's dead." Naru's answer startled them. They couldn't find words to say. Their eyes are just fixated on him without moving an inch. It's not long before Naru returned his eyes to Mai's.

"How long had you been in contact with him, Mai?" Mai flinched at the cold tone of Naru's voice but Mai brushed it off.

"I've encountered numerous of shape shifting ghosts since I entered Master Fang Yuan Zheng's Sect. So when I first met him in the old school building, I thought he's one of them since you two have the same face. Well, not until recently. I know you are Dr. Davis but I didn't dig deeper because knowing you're Oliver Davis is enough for me. I thought it would be better if you personally tell me about your identity." Mai answered before breathing deeply.

"I didn't know of Mr. Guard- Eugene Davis's existence until Bou-san told us something about Dr. Davis's brother. Though I've read one your books, I never really read it thoroughly. And Eugene never corrected me nor told me who he was." Mai added. She sat on her bed, just opposite to Naru.

"Did he tell you anything about where we could find his body?" Naru asked but Mai shook her head sadly.

"Unfortunately, he said nothing about him. He just acts as my spirit guide and would always appear whenever we had cases. But I remember him appearing in the world of the living during the cultural festival in our school." Mai answered while watching how Naru's face change from being col to annoyed.

"That idiot! He knew perfectly well what will happen to him if he stays here longer! Why?!" Naru stood up, looking angry. The others also backed away a little in surprise. Naru would just creepily smile at them if he's angry but he was openly revealing his emotions now. His brother must've been a sensitive spot for him.

"I asked him one time and he told me that he had something to do. As for what it is, I don't know." Mai said to him, looking unaffected by Naru's mood. But only she knew that deep inside, she's really stunned and scared. She closed her eyes for a bit and tried channeling or summoning Mr. Guardian in hopes that he would appear like what he did during the festival.

'Eugene Davis, if you refused to appear, I will ignore you for life! Your brother is scaring me!'

Mai bowed her head and tried to sleep but she couldn't! She really want to escape but she's wide awake and she's not focused enough to astral project. Mai really need Mr. Guardian to appear before this great lord devoured her!

'...mirror...go to...Noll...mirror...'

Just when she's losing hope and was planning to pretend to sleep, Mai heard a faint familiar voice. Mai looked up and look around with excited eyes but she only saw Naru. She frowned and called Mr. Guardian again but it was useless. She couldn't hear him again. Mai pondered for a bit and stood up abruptly. All people in the room were watching her confusedly as she stride to Naru with big steps and pulled him up from his seat.

Mai was frantically looking for a mirror while gripping Naru's hand but she couldn't find one. She doesn't have a choice but to find one outside. Naru was still angry about Gene's situation but he still followed Mai wherever she dragged him. Mai got a rectangular mirror from a nurse and returned to her hospital room. Seeing the tall mirror Mai is bringing in, Bou-san hurriedly helped her bring it inside despite being confused.

"What are you going to do with the mirror?" Ayako asked but Mai didn't answer as she let go of Naru.

The brunette locked the door and lit up some candles before shutting of the curtains and lights. She then pushed Naru in front of the mirror and waited, earnestly looking at Naru's reflection. Naru look at Mai and turned to his reflection. He knew Mai's plan now. His brother must have ordered her to do this while trying to contact him though the 'door'. Naru opened Naru's 'door' and waited for Eugene to contact him.

"What is she doing?" John asked but no one knows the answer. Lin suddenly walked towards Naru and Mai and gasped while staring at the mirror.

"Mr. Guardian!" Mai exclaimed, grabbing the attention of the SPR. She also looked startled while staring at the mirror. Masako and Ayako went to Mai's side followed by the other three.

There they saw their reflections but the one on the middle feels different. It's still Naru's reflection but he was smiling. They could never believe that Naru will smile like that so they checked the person. And he was really not smiling! They opened their mouth in shock when they saw that reflection waved his right hand.

"Aah!" Ayako and Yasu yelled in surprise.

'That reflection moved but Naru didn't!'

"So Eugene Davis is Naru's identical twin?!" Bou-san asked while his brain is realizing the new information.

"Hello." A faint voice was heard. They didn't know where it came from but they were sure the one who spoke just now is the one in the mirror.

"Gene." Naru and Lin answered while staring at the mirror. Both of their faces are serious while the reflection just smiled at them.

"Where are you?" Naru asked bluntly as he reached out his hand to touch the surface of the mirror.

"Straight as always, Naru. Can't you just greet me first?" Eugene joked with him while putting his hands behind him. He looked around and saw Mai staring at him.

"Oh, Mai! You okay now?"

"You promised to tell me everything. Do it now!" Mai responded, not really giving him the answer to the question he asked.

"I promised but can I not do that now? I'm really sleepy, you know." Eugene answered and yawned.

He had been sleeping when Mai suddenly contacted him. At the mention of Naru's name, he immediately forced a connection with Naru. Naru's finally willing to contact him, he couldn't miss this chance. Now that he succeeded in contacting him then it would be easy for him to do that again unlike his previous attempts. Gene couldn't reached his twin because they were in different country but Naru hadn't opened his 'door' ever since he came to Japan.

And no matter how many times he knocked, it was as though Naru couldn't feel him knocking into his consciousness. He also planned to possess him and walk into his mind like Mai did on their case in that church last Christmas but he was always repelled by Naru's PK. Mai only managed to do that because Naru's been thinking or searching for her.

"Don't evade the question, Gene. Where are you now?" Naru asked, looking annoyed.

"Somewhere. I also don't know. " Gene answered while shaking his head to wake himself up.

"Where is the last place you had visited? Can you remember?" Naru asked again while Gene held his head.

"I'm sorry." Gene answered while looking at them with sad eyes.

"What?"

"I'm sorry, Noll. I can't tell you yet." Eugene answered, making Naru more annoyed.

"Gene! Do you know how long I was searching for you?! Mum and Dad are very worried and wants you home!" Naru exploded with Eugene's answer. The whole room suddenly become cold.

"Naru, please understand. I... I can't you yet. I know and I missed Mum and Dad too but I... I need to do something first before returning. Please, Naru.." Gene stuttered while calming his angry twin.

"Mr. Guardian, what is it that you wanted to do?" Mai asked but Gene began to vanish, leaving Naru's reflection on the mirror.

"No... No! Mr. Guardian, wait! Mr. Guardian!" Mai called out but Gene wasn't there. Naru also have something to say and tried to search for Gene's door but he couldn't find it.

"Mr. Guardian!"

"Gene!"

Along with Naru and Lin, Mai keeps on calling for Mr. Guardian but that person never responded nor appear. Mai suddenly felt someone pulling her and before she understand what's happening, her body suddenly felt soft as her vision got blurry.

Mai felt that familiar pain again. She can hear her bones cracking as the red car ran over the body she's in. AGAIN. Her vision went black while feeling the intense pain and worry that the body is feeling. Mai still didn't know the identity of the man, who is the owner of this memory but now that she had dream of it gain, she will make sure to find his identity this time. Faces maybe blurry like the previous dreams but she will gather clues as much as possible. Her hands are full with Naru and Mr. Guardian so she had to solve this matter of her father's handicrafts or else, her brain will explode in stress!

Mai heard that woman again. She's begging her brother to help her. Mai take note of her surroundings with this blurry vision and search for some significant clues to lead her to that lake. The next this she knew, two men carried her to a boat with that woman and her brother.

They threw her to the lake as Mai tried her hardest to feel and hear the victim's thoughts and emotions. Mai saw the black jade on the body's neck and prayed. She did her best to have a connection but all she can feel is longing, sorrow and pain. Mai can feel the water entering her lungs. She couldn't breathe. The dream is ending and Mai thought she couldn't get something out of the dream when...

"... I'm sorry... I have ...leave you... but... understand... I want to thank ... people...saving us..."

"...brother...not...upset...guess...not lucky..."

Mai woke up after that dream. She tried to inhale all the oxygen her body could take. She couldn't breath properly even after breathing and ended up coughing. She grasped her chest while stabilizing her breathing. Her chest hurts with the sudden inhaling of air. Her vision was even blurry with tears.

"Here. Drink it." Ayako immediately handed her a glass of warm water after seeing her opened eyes. Her friends are also looking worriedly at the brunette after she continued coughing after drinking the water. It took a few minutes before Mai calm her cough.

"What happened?" Masako asked, rubbing Mai's back.

"Cough.. Nothing. Just a nightmare. Did Mr. Guardian appeared?" Mai asked, looking around.

"He didn't." Bou-san answered while sneaking a peak towards Naru, who is sitting In front of the mirror. Mai pursed her lips and sighed. That warm energy is leaking from him again.

"If you don't stop right now, you'll be thrown back to your previous hospital bed again." Mai voiced out that faltered Naru, making him look away. He didn't noticed the faint energy coming from Naru.

"Naru!" Lin called out after waking up from his dazed state, of course, in a stoic way. Naru coldly hummed as he nodded his head, withdrawing all of his energy.

"You can see it?" Naru asked in his monotone voice.

"I can't. But I, too, have PK so I'm a bit sensitive to it. I can fee it." Mai answered him in the same tone. They talked like strangers and they wouldn't even look at each other's eyes. The SPR stared at both of them worriedly.

"Now, I understand why Mr. Guardian- Eugene's so worried about you the last time you collapsed in Yuasa High school. He also knew a lot about your abilities. I'm such a fool for not realizing it sooner."

"I'm glad you're aware of it yourself." Naru answered. Mai would've gotten angry of his response but she didn't speak after that. And Naru didn't mean to answer like that but he's now overcome by his current chaotic emotions.

Lin's phone rang, disrupting the tension around them. Lin excused himself and went out. After a few minutes, he came in and whispered something to Naru. The latter nodded and stood up.

"I'm going. I have matters to attend to. If Gene reappeared, immediately call me. " He said, not looking at Mai. Lin nodded at her and the SPR before following Naru out. Mai sighed and smiled sadly.

'What is going to happen now?'

"No!" Mai screamed as she sat up from her bed.

No, it's not her. Mai finally noticed the voice that came out from her mouth and find herself dreaming. The voice is deep and it definitely belongs to a man. His scream was full of terror and pain. It's obvious that he had been dreaming something horrible. Mai felt herself shaking and she hug herself. No, not herself but the man, who is the owner of this memory.

"..Sobs... I am so sorry.. sobs... I have sinned... I'm sorry.."

The man keeps on muttering to himself as he cried on his bed. Mai felt pity for the man. Since she's having this dream in a first person perspective, she could feel the man's intense sadness, guilt, and pain in his heart. Whatever the dream he just had, it is clear that it had a great impact on him. Mai waited for him to stop crying as she wished that this dream don't involve deaths. It would be a cruel for a pity man like this to die without having to resolve these emotions.

The man tossed his blanket aside after wiping his tears. His tears stopped but the depressing feeling inside still remains. He went to the sink to wash his face and Mai took the opportunity to see his face. He's handsome but he's a generation ahead of Mai. He's probably at the same age as Mai's father when he died. Mai smiled sadly at the thought of her father. After that incident happened, Mai avoids the topic of his father. Mai was even surprised herself when she told Naru her father's handicrafts. Mai prayed Naru didn't noticed her depressing looks when she mentioned her father.

The man reflected on the mirror has a golden blonde hair. It's different from John's blond. It is much darker and more shining. And his dark blue eyes, it's beautiful. It reminds Mai of Naru and Mr. Guardian's eyes. His hair and eyes shows her that he's a foreigner but his face structure tells her otherwise. His face doesn't like a westerner. Apart from his hair and blue eyes, his face structure looks more like an Asian. Oh, he also speaks Japanese. Is he a half-Japanese?

The man quietly left the bathroom and walk towards his wardrobe to change. After five minutes, he went outside. Taking a good look, Mai noticed how shabby his house is. It's more shabby than her apartment and it's not very organized and clean.

It morning but Mai didn't even see him eat. Mai can only see two moving feet because the man keeps on looking down. The man suddenly stopped after noticing someone obstructing his way. The man looked up and similar to the man, Mai was also surprised. No, she's more surprised than man. In front of the man is a familiar woman that Mai had wanted to see for years. She had a long brown hair and wide apricot eyes. Her face smiled when the man recognized her.

"Hello, Jeff!"

'..Mom...'

Her mother was much younger than the last time she saw her. This memory must have happened a few years back. Mai wanted to cry but seeing her mother's smiling face, she couldn't bear to. She had promised her to not always cry for her. She suddenly felt the guilt inside the man intensify.

'This man feels so guilty while looking at mom.'

"Mrs. Taniyama." The man, Jeff, answered her politely and slightly bowed.

"You can just call me big sister, you know? Let's take a seat over there." Mai's mother answered as she pointed a bench. Mai saw that they're in a park. Mai's mother sat on the right while the man sat on her left.

"Are you doing okay? Is Japan a difficult place for you?" Anne asked, looking up to the sky. The man averted his gaze from Anne and nodded.

"It's the same place wherever I go." Jeff answered in his hoarse and monotone voice.

"How are you doing in your business class?" Anne asked.

"They said I'm going to graduate sooner and find a job."

"Ooh. That's great! More than four years ago, you didn't even know how to write. I thought I would sponsor you for ten years before you even finish your studies but you had achieved an amazing feat in less than five years. You're a genius! If you had been polished since young, you would have become successful now." Anne praised while clapping. Her face flashed a genuine look of surprise.

"It's thanks to your husband, Mrs. Taniyama."

Mai also nodded her head in agreement. Finishing your studies from 0 to business class in less than five years? That's truely astonishing! However, Mai can feel no pride in this achievement inside the man. In fact, he felt that he deserve this opportunities and accomplishments. But thanks to Mai's father? Mai was a bit confused.

"Don't show that kind of look when you receive your diploma. You deserve it." Anne said and smack the man's head. Mai let out a faint yell as she felt the pain of being smacked. Mai smiled while experiencing her mother's infamous smack again. Though she's not the one being smacked, at least she felt it from this man.

The man rubbed his head and coughed, fixing his expression to an emotionless one. His feelings didn't change. Anne stared at him for a few seconds before taking out a flash drive from her bag. She gave it to the man before smiling.

"That's your graduation gift."

Mai felt the man's becoming emotional while looking at the black flash drive on his palm. He's happy but he's guilty and sad too. Mai began feeling curious as to why the man's emotions are like this. Jeff gave Anne a small smile and carefully thrust the flash drive into his pocket. Anne grinned and tossed him different shopping bags. The man and Mai didn't noticed it at first but it was really plenty.

"And this is my birthday gift to you! Be sure to pick the best one for your graduation." Xia Anne said as she keep shoving the man shopping bags that has the logo of different famous fashion brands.

"But Mrs. Taniyama, my wardrobe are full with your gifts. I can't accept these. Besides, you already gave my graduation gift." The man said in a nervous voice.

"No! Those are from Luella and Martin. These are from me and my late husband. If you don't accept it, I will no longer deliver those photos for you." Xia Anne threatened making the man flinched. A few seconds later, he accepted all of those shopping bags.

"And these are for your birthday. How old are you now? 30? 33?" Mai's mother asked.

"It's 27, Mrs. Taniyama."

"Tsk. I keep forgetting that you're much younger than my husband and I. You're always acting like a depressing old man. Is it because you're a genius? It's also unbelievable that you already have 10-year-old kids." Xia Anne complained while taking something out from her bag.

"From where I came from, people can get married at the age of 16." The man answered.

"Yeah. Then that means you're 17 when you had your children. And I think your late wife is older than you for three years, yeah?"

"Yes."

"Have you been visiting her in Boston? I gave you the address years ago."

"I have."

"Good! Here. I already arranged your papers and you're officially a Japanese citizen. I also made a bank account for you. I heard you have a part time job. You can deposit money in this account. After your graduation, I will stop giving you your monthly allowance. You need to find a job using your bachelor's degree and have stable life here. I will be visiting you whenever I have time to check on you. You have to live your life well, okay? My husband will haunt you if you do otherwise." Xia Anne warned him with a strict and menacing face.

The man went silent for a while before speaking. His voice is full of doubt and guilt.

"Why are you doing this? Why do you and your late husband want me to be successful? Aren't I suppose to die to atone for my sins? I've done great injustice to those kids and my late wife. I-"

"Before your wife died, you have been supporting them since they were infants. When you found out that your wife was becoming alcoholic after giving birth and the kids were malnourished, you gave them to your aunt for nursing. You travelled far to earn money for their milk. The time when they were two years old and began talking, your aunt returned them back to your wife. You were worried so you filled the cupboard with food before going to work." Xia Anne said while the man bowed. He's crying.

"Even though you hated them for having those abilities, you still have them food. It's not enough to call that father's love since it can still be ruled out as neglect but at least you have conscience. And although I wanted to beat you up into a pulp when I heard you left them after finding your wife's dead body, it's good that you reported the incident after a few days. I don't know what happened to you and what are you thinking during those days but I'm glad you did that." Xia Anne continued.

"When my husband found you at that dark alley, you were so malnourished and dehydrated but the first thing you asked him is not food nor drinks but to give them better shelter. After saving them and giving them to trustworthy caretakers and researchers, my husband decided to nurture you and help you succeed. I am not kind as my husband so of course, I was opposed to it because you're getting away from your sins. But I understood my husband's side after he explained to me." Xia Anne said and smiled at him.

"Jeff, all of thes are you punishment not your rewards."

"H-how? How can you this is a punishment?!"

"You hated their abilities but you still think of them as your sons- your flesh and blood. My husband saw that after investigating you and the children. You wanted to die but he forbids you. You're getting away easily if you just die. That's is why my husband, before passing away, ordered you to live with and forced you to study and understand their abilities. He wanted you to love them but cannot even see nor touch them personally. He wants you to live in guilt while receiving all the opportunities and accomplishments you do not deserve. In other words, my husband want to punish you through mental torture while making sure you don't go crazy. Thinking about this, I'm still surprised that my kind husband is more cruel than me, a businesswoman." Xia Anne laughed at her last sentence.

"And lastly, you promised that you will ask for their forgiveness if and only if you met by chance. If you ever see one of them, you have to ask for their forgiveness even if they do not forgive you. This is your punishment. And I think it's working pretty well."

"But I signed an agreement with the adoptive parents. I can never see them much less as for forgiveness." The man said, his tears are still flowing but his eyes are shining with hope.

"You did sign an agreement but it only said that you can never take them back. But if you did met by chance, then my friends can wholeheartedly agree for you to see then and apologize. They also allowed you to send letter and introduce yourself as their father but you never did."

"I-I'm very scared. I'm afraid they'll hate me."

"They do hate you. They don't even want to mention nor hear your name. That's the reason why my husband wanted you to apologize if you, by chance, met them." Xia Anne answered, making the man cry even more. Mai couldn't even take those emotions herself. She, too, began to cry.

"Ho-how..are they?"

"I never visited them after that incident but I heard that they're doing pretty well. They're the complete opposite of each other. The other is bubbly but the other is quiet. They're like the sun and the moon. They are both geniuses like you but the bubbly one wants to have a normal school life while the other is rushing to complete his studies. Apparently, he wants to join the society sooner. My friend is so proud while telling me about those kids. They're grateful that you agreed to give the kids to them."

The man was also proud of it but he smiled sadly. He wants to see them but he's so scared of their rejection. He knew he deserved it but this still hurts him. The man felt a hand rubbing his head and he knew Xia Anne is comforting him.

"But you know, my husband's method of punishing you is cruel but he's still kind. He still wanted you to be successful but he also wanted you to be happy, at least for a little bit. He wanted you to get married and have kids. He wanted you to prove to those kids and your late wife, that you have changed and will not repeat the wrong doings you did in the past. He still, apparently, believes that people can change for the better." Xia Anne said, smiling sweetly while remembering her husband. Mai missed that loving look. Mai wanted to hug her but she can't.

"So! I heard some woman is pursuing you romantically! How is she? Is she good?" Xia Anne changed her temperament and turned into a gossipy big sister.

"Mrs. Taniyama..."

"Come on! Come on! You can open to big sister here! There's nothing to hide."

"Mrs. Taniyama, I don't love anyone."

"Impossible! I heard that woman is pursuing for months now. Had she not touched your heart yet?"

"Ugh."
