Teddy and Owen carried their kids off the plane in Seattle. They had three weeks off over Christmas and decided it would be the perfect time to take them to see Evelyn. Around them strangers smiled at the adorable family. As they were traveling home from an army base, both were required to be in uniform which drew even more stares as Allison nuzzled into Teddy's shoulder and Leo tried to run from Owen. As soon as they picked up theyre stroller Owen strapped the rambunctious two year old in before he could take off.
"You have your hands full sir," a young soldier said.
"Leo just needs to run," Owen replied, "the long flight is hard when you're almost three."
"Owen," Teddy said over her shoulder, "can you take Ali?"
Owen caught up to her in three strides, "you okay?"
"I'm just going to the washroom," Teddy replied.
"I have the kids," Owen said.
"Sir, do you need a hand," the young man asked.
"We're good," Owen said.
"Helping Colonel Altman," the soldier asked.
"They're our kids," Owen said.
"How old," the soldier asked again.
"Leo is almost three and Allison is 19 months," Owen replied. He was watching the bathroom door, ever since Teddy had told him three days ago, she had been feeling like crap. She said she felt like crap before that but now that he knew why he was worried about her. The transatlantic flight with two toddlers had not helped and as they had traveled with a large military group, she had been in work mode and unable to fully relax. The kids had slept in their laps and Teddy had dozed on Owen's shoulder but hadn't really slept. Someone had taken a picture of the four of them cuddled and dozing. Owen had seen the person snap the picture and demanded that they delete it to protect his family's privacy.
"Have you been together long," the soldier asked, he was a young scrub nurse who had worked with both but didn't know they were together.
"We've known each other since 2002," Owen said, "ran the same units in the field, taught together in Seattle. We're engaged."
Teddy emerged from the bathroom looking pale.
"Teds," Owen asked.
"Let's just go see your mom," Teddy forced a smile, "Who's ready to see grandma?"
Owen knew she was barely holding it together but she would wait until they got to his moms to let him know. He could see she just needed to be held.
"Grandma," Leo shouted.
"Let's go," Owen said, passing Allison back to Teddy. He used his free hand to tuck a strand of hair that had escaped her bun behind her ear.
"Do you think your mom will come out and stay with us for a while in August or September," Teddy asked.
"I think she'd love to," Owen said, "come be grandma for a few weeks to help us out."
"It'll be a lot going on for sure," Teddy replied, "can we do it."
"We're doing it together," Owen said.
Evelyn was waiting anxiously for them. She stood on her toes waiting for her son and daughter in law. She knew they were living together and things were going well for the little family. She was ecstatic that Owen had asked Teddy to marry him.
Evelyn saw them coming around the corner and yelled, "Owen, Teddy, Leo, Allison."
Owen, seeing Evelyn let go of Leo's hand, "run to grandma." Leo sprinted ahead weaving through legs to reach Evelyn.
"You're so big," Evelyn said, picking up the boy.
Teddy and Owen caught up to their son.
"Mom," Owen said, hugging her.
"Teddy sweetheart," Evelyn said, hugging Teddy.
"It's good to see you," Teddy said.
"Are you alright sweetheart you look pale," Evelyn said.
"16 hour surgery home for a three hour nap then to the airport and I didn't really sleep on the plane," Teddy said.
"Let's get you home then," Evelyn smiled, "now I just need my Allison."
Teddy passed Allison to Evelyn.
"Owen, I brought your truck so there's room for all of us. I got the car seats you ordered and Nathan installed them this morning. Megan, Nathan and Faroke are waiting at the house," Evelyn said.
Reaching the truck Owen took the keys from Evelyn and hopped in the driver seat.
"This isn't the autobahn," Teddy reminded him from the back seat where she had squeezed between the kids' car seats.
"Disappointing," Owen chuckled.
"We're hoping to keep the truck," Teddy confirmed.
"We have eight weeks leave a year,'' Owen said, "I thought we could come home."
"Time now and in the spring," Teddy suggested.
"Maybe June ish," Owen said.
"May or June," Teddy agreed.
"I'll come out in between for a few weeks," Evelyn suggested.
"Come spend the last part of August and September with us," Owen proposed.
"You come spend May with me and I'll spend a month with you then," Evelyn agreed.
"We will see what we can do for May," Teddy said, "we have to book it."
"Don't you approve all of the leaves," Evelyn said.
"His," Teddy laughed, "I have to get mine approved. I have years where I didn't take it all because I had no reason to so they should be fairly lenient with me and giving it to me when Owen takes his."
"Did you take it," Owen asked.
"I'l do the requests. The most I've ever taken is my six months with Allison," Teddy said, "I wanted to work until her due date but she was three days early."
They reached the house in record time Owen now used to driving with no speed limits on their family outings. A second larger vehicle was on their list when they got home. Owen, who had always driven larger trucks, was starting to admit that he enjoyed the power of their car and the way the Audi hugged the road even at top speed. Their thought for now was to stay in Germany until Leo was ready for kindergarten then see if there were options for them to move somewhere on the west coast together. They knew it could change and Teddy was settled in Germany now. She fit in with the locals with ease now while Owen still stood out. Their kids could speak both languages and Leo was even beginning to learn his letters in german at daycare. For now they were going to keep renting Owen's house in Seattle out so they had somewhere to go back to when they were ready.
They met Megan's family at the door with hugs and squeals.
"Wine Teddy," Megan offered, holding up a bottle of red.
Teddy shook her head, "if I have a glass now I'll be asleep in ten minutes."
"Coffee love," Evelyn offered.
"Water I think," Teddy said.
"Spill it Teddy," Megan said, "no wine and no coffee?"
"Owen," Teddy asked.
"We're having another baby at the end of August," Owen said.
"You hid it again," Megan said.
"I'm 7 weeks and we've only known for 4 days," Teddy said, "we were waiting to see you."
"Another baby we're having a baby," Megan yelled.
"We are," Teddy said, hugging her friend.
"Congratulations," Evelyn said, "when does this one arrive?"
"August 30 hopefully," Teddy replied, "their sister was a week early."
"You have Owen this time less stress," Evelyn said.
"I'm also 2 years older," Teddy said.
"It's a baby and it's exciting," Evelyn said, hugging Teddy.
"The kids don't know yet," Owen said.
"I'll come out in August," Evelyn said, "spend August and September with you to help you out with the kids."
"Thanks mom," Owen said.
"I'm going to work as long as I can and take as much maternity leave as possible with our kids," Teddy said, "took six months with Allison."
"Take all the time you can," Evelyn said, "their only little once."
"They're already growing too fast," Teddy said, "we'll need help if Allison is any indication."
"Fussy," Evelyn asked.
"I didn't put her down for more than ten minutes for 8 weeks," Teddy said, "she slept on me. I put her in her bassinet and she woke up and screamed. It was hard."
"I'm coming to spend the first few weeks and help you out, I'll come a couple weeks before your due date to help," Evelyn said.
"Teds, you're not alone this time," Owen said, "we'll take turns and do it together."
"I'm on input and you have output then," Teddy replied.
"Really," Megan asked, "that looks so awkward."
"I did until a month ago with Allison," Teddy said, "she still would if I let her."
"Why," Megan asked.
"Better for her," Teddy said, "I supplemented with formula when I needed or for day care."
"Owen are you okay with this," Megan asked.
"It's up to Teddy if she wants to," Owen said.
"Three kids Owen," Megan said.
"It's what we want," Owen replied.
"This was planned," Megan said.
"Sooner than we thought but we wanted three," Teddy said, "we know it's going to be busy."
"Are you okay sweetheart," Evelyn asked Teddy.
"I'm okay," Teddy said, "jet lagged. It's almost bedtime at home for the kids."
"Keeping them up a bit," Megan begged.
"Not too long," Owen said, "Allison will be a cranky princess if we don't get her down soon."
"What about Leo," asked Nathan.
"He goes to bed about a half hour after Allison," Teddy said, "but my sweet Leosaursus becomes a t-rex if he's up too late."
"Mommy," Leo demanded, "I'm hungry."
"I have snacks Leo," Evelyn answered.
"Leosaurus," Megan laughed.
"He likes dinosaurs," Teddy said, "obsessed. It's all he can talk about. Or Santa."
"How's your new place," Evelyn asked.
"Perfect for us," Owen said, "big, bright, room for three to play."
"But you don't have outside space," Megan said.
"We can't all live on the beach," Owen said.
"There's an okay park across the road and two good playgrounds about a 5 minute walk," Teddy said, "we go to the park every day no matter what."
"Swimming twice a week," Owen said, "day care takes them out for at least an hour a day, more in the summer. They play outside."
"They need to run around," Teddy said, "we should take them for a walk."
"Let's all go," Evelyn said.
"I don't want to," Faroke whined.
"Up," Nathan commanded, "we're all going and you can help your cousins."
"They're babies," Faroke complained, "they still nap."
"Help," Megan directed.
"Let's go," Teddy said, "Leo go get your shoes."
"Park," Leo asked.
"Yes we're going to the park," Owen said.
They got their shoes and coats on and walked to the park.
"Daddy slide," Leo yelled.
"Let's go to the slide," Owen agreed.
"Allison do you want to go to the swings," Teddy asked.
"Yea," Allison yelled.
Teddy set her in the baby swing and pushed it back and forth making Allison laugh.
Meghan went to stand with Teddy.
"So you and Owen when's the wedding," Megan asked.
"We haven't decided," Teddy said, "after the baby now."
"And ring I haven't seen it on you yet," Megan said grabbing Teddy's left hand.
"Did Owen tell you," Teddy asked.
"It's moms ring," Megan beamed, "mom asked how I get about it. She said she always knew it would be yours. That you would be with him."
"I used to dream of it," Teddy admitted.
"Then why," Megan asked.
"Beth, Christina, Amelia," Teddy said, "he always had someone then they would break his heart. I decided to be his friend. He would always want me as his friend. Then after he didn't call me back about Allison I thought he didn't want me."
"Why did you take so long to tell me," Megan asked.
"She's not my first baby," Teddy said, "my husband and I tried. He didn't know when he passed I was going home to tell Henry and he was coughing up blood when I got home so I never told him. I lost the baby at almost 18 weeks. So I waited until after that point to tell anyone."
"Teddy," Megan said, "you were married?"
"I was," Teddy said, "his name was Henry. I married him to give him insurance. He had VHL."
"Teddy," Megan said, "that's incredible."
"Henry was," Teddy said, "two and a half years."
"Your baby," Megan asked.
"We took the risk having a baby we knew we had a 25% chance they would develop VHL before they were born and not make it we thought we would be okay," Teddy said, "I went for all the screening and then I went to an appointment and his heart was hardly beating there were tumors already. He wouldn't have lived. Only Owen knew. Owen was with me when I lost Joshua. That's when I went to Germany I had to start over. Seattle was too sad."
"Teddy," Megan sighed.
"I'm okay," Teddy said, "I'm good. I never thought I could be a mom after Joshua. When I got a second chance with Allison it was everything I dreamed of."
"And with Owen," Megan said.
"I should have fought harder for him," Teddy said.
"I should have known something was up when he was asking me if I had heard from you," Megan said, "asked you about it. Or when you asked me about Leo."
"Leo is my son now," Teddy said, "he decided I was his mommy."
"You are," Megan said, "when I've seen the four of you together he's a mommy's boy."
"And Allison is daddy's girl," Teddy smiled.
"I want one," Megan said.
"See what happens," Teddy said.
"Nathan isn't sure," Megan replied.
"Talk to him," Teddy said, "we haven't planned either but it's good. We would like to keep the new one to just family knowing until Owen or I tell you you can talk about it."
"Waiting," Megan asked, "12 weeks?"
"Closer to 20," Teddy said, "I'd feel better."
"I'll wait to celebrate and send baby things," Megan said.
"We don't need much," Teddy said, "we'll know more once we find out the gender but we kept all of Allison's baby things."
"So just baby boy clothes would be needed," Megan asked.
"Maybe another crib," Teddy said, "but the first six months is the bassinet anyway and maybe by then we can transition Allison to a real bed."
"Space," Megan asked.
"Same gender shares a room," Teddy said.
Nathan was standing with Owen, "three kids mate? How's Teddy?"
"She's excited but feeling like crap," Owen said, "three is going to be a lot."
"Three three and under," Nathan said.
"I know," Owen said, "but Leo is toilet trained now. We may try to train Allison before the baby comes."
"One in diapers," Nathan said.
"Exactly," Owen said, "and we just got Allison reliably sleeping through the night."
"Hows the new place," Nathan asked.
"It's good," Owen said, "room for 5 of us."
"Wedding," Nathan asked.
"Teddy says after the baby," Owen replied, "when's yours?"
"We wanted to do August but I don't think your family can come then," Nathan replied.
"Teddy said she won't fly after the beginning of June," Owen said.
Evelyn joined the men, "next Christmas?"
"With three kids," Owen agreed, "it'll be busy mom."
"I'm looking forward to it," Evelyn said, "three and this one I get to see as a newborn."
"I get to be the first person to hold one of my kids," Owen said.
"Negotiate that with Teddy," Evelyn said, "but you'll probably see them first."
"Before her," Owen said.
"Yes," Evelyn said.
"Three three and under," Owen said.
