Monday morning Owen got the kids up and dressed before Teddy woke up. He wanted her to sleep as long as possible as she had been tossing and turning all night. He had tried to hold her as much as possible and make her feel safe since they got home from The hospital two days before. He had rarely seen this level of anxiety and fear from Teddy and had never seen her cling to another person before, not the way she was clinging to him. Teddy was usually cool and collected; she prided herself on her independence. The woman sleeping was one he didn't know. He hadn't seen the vulnerable side of Teddy before he just knew she needed him there and to take care of her the way she always took care of him.
"Mommy," Allison asked.
"She's still asleep princess," Owen said, "we'll go wake her up soon with breakfast."
"Is mommy better," Leo asked.
"She's okay," Owen said, "just really tired. What should we make mommy for breakfast?"
"Waffles," Leo said.
"Does mommy like waffles or Leo," Owen asked.
"Mommy," Leo said.
Owen made waffles and crispy bacon, he put Teddy's on a tray with a glass of apple juice. He walked into their room and saw she was awake staring out the window.
"Hey," Owen said, "I brought you waffles and bacon."
"Thanks," Teddy mumbled.
Owen set the tray on the nightstand.
"Teddy what's wrong," Owen asked.
"I'm scared something will happen to Daniel," Teddy said, "if I don't move I can't hurt him."
"We go back to the doctor in a few hours," Owen said, "he's okay. Do you want me to grab a stethoscope and listen?"
"He's moving. He thinks my liver is a soccer ball," Teddy said.
"Good," Owen said, "is he moving enough?"
"Constantly," Teddy said.
"Any pain," Owen asked.
"No," Teddy said.
"Teddy even if he comes now it's 33 weeks he'll make it," Owen said, "should I grab a medical bag and check?"
"Please," Teddy begged.
"I'll be right back," Owen said.
As he opened the door to their room both kids burst in.
"Mommy, mommy," Allison shouted.
"Hi baby," Teddy smiled, "are you coming to cuddle with me?"
"Mommy come play," Allison asked.
"Maybe later," Teddy said, "come give me a hug now."
"Can you read to me," Leo asked.
"Go get me a book and I can read," Teddy agreed.
"You pick it," Leo said.
"I'm going to stay right here," Teddy said, "I know daddy told you I have to spend a couple days laying around to keep the baby safe."
"When baby," Allison asked.
"8 more weeks," Teddy said, "he still has to grow."
Leo scampered back with dinosaur books.
"Let's let mom eat then she can read to you," Owen said, he was trying to get a better read on Teddy's mood. Was she okay or was she faking it for the kids.
"Why doesn't dad read to all of us while I eat," Teddy suggested.
Owen sat on his side of the bed and took the books from Leo.
A couple hours later Sarah showed up to watch the kids and Owen helped Teddy to the car.
"Colonel Altman," the OB greeted, "Major Hunt."
"Captain Taves," Teddy replied.
"Ma'am I'm going to need you to change into a gown and remove your underwear," Taves said, "I'll step out."
"I'll go with her," Owen said to Teddy.
Teddy nodded. Once the door closed she changed into a gown as requested and sat on the edge of the bed rubbing her stomach. When Taves knocked Teddy let her know she could come back in.
"Lie back ma'am," Taves directed, "I need to examine you and it shows you were to come in Friday for your 33 week check up so I'm going to do both today and if everything looks good you don't need to come back later this week."
"Of course," Teddy replied.
The OB preformed her exam before speaking, "things have improved but not as much as I would have liked. We have two choices at this point we can place the sutures which would allow you some movement around your home, a gentle walk with your older child or we put you on complete bed rest."
"Can we have a moment to discuss it," Owen asked.
"Yes sir," the OB said.
"Dismissed Taves," Owen commanded, "we will call you."
"I can't do bed rest," Teddy said, "but will sutures stop it."
"It sounds like our best shot," Owen said, "its little man's best chance."
"I'm working from home but I think I need to pass more of my work off," Teddy said, "protect the kids."
"I think you should be off," Owen said, "we can call it in today."
"Theres no one," Teddy said, "you would be doing both our jobs. I can work from my laptop on the couch or in bed."
"What about the kids," Owen asked.
"I'm moving you to fully out of the hospital," Teddy said, "I need your help. I think we do the sutures as painful as it sounds. I want them to give me the meds to mature his lungs incase."
"We're not there yet," Owen said, "we'll monitor and keep you home and calm."
"One thing with the pandemic the most I move in the day is taking the kids to the park," Teddy said.
"That sounds like it's okay," Owen said, "just monitor and take it easy."
"All I've been doing for months," Teddy moaned.
"I know," Owen said, "do you want me here for the procedure?"
"Yes," Teddy said, "holding my hand."
"I'll get Taves," Owen said. He called the OB in.
"Ma'am are you ready," Taves asked.
"I am," Teddy said, "Hunt is going to stay with me."
They completed the procedure and Taves offered, "would you like to see him?"
"Yes," Teddy said.
Taves performed an ultrasound and Teddy smiled for the first time in days seeing their son wiggled and move and watching his heart beat.
"Go home," Taves said, "take it easy. No surgery, no seeing patients. Play with your other kids. Light house work, nothing heavy. Listen to your body if anything doesn't feel right you come straight in."
"Can I take my kids to the park," Teddy asked.
"You can walk and should walk every day," Taves said, "I want to check you Friday and we can decide then. Ma'am I have to say it as awkward as this is to say. No sex of any sort."
"I know," Teddy said, "you said it with Allison."
"I have to say it," Taves replied, "go take it easy and I'll check on Friday."
"Thank you Taves," Teddy said.
"You can get ready and go home when you're ready," Taves replied.
"Thank you captain. Dismissed," Teddy said.
The OB left the room.
"Do you want me to step out," Owen asked.
"You're fine," Teddy replied.
Owen passed Teddy her clothes and she quickly got dressed.
"Stop at the bakery on our way home," Teddy suggested.
"We can," Owen agreed.
They walked to the car and he drove home.
"What if," Teddy started.
"Then we get him the best care possible," Owen said, "he'll be okay. All the major systems are functioning. His job now is to get big and strong. Your job is to relax and enjoy it. Enjoy the kids. You have the light duty letter. I'll take on more of the admin work so I can be home with you."
The made a couple stops on the way home with Owen doing everything he could to keep Teddy calm. He was worried as well but knew he had to make sure she was as calm as possible.
When they got home they both had to join a virtual meeting.
"I see Altman but not Hunt," the general said.
"He's with me sir," Teddy replied, "we're both working from home."
"Both of you," the general asked.
"I'll send you the letter but I'm moving to 50% work load," Teddy said, "Hunt is my second in command here and will be stepping up."
"Is everything okay," the general asked.
"I'll send you the explanation letter once we're off this call," Teddy replied, "it's a precaution and it may change if things improve."
The one other woman asked, "Teddy are you and the baby alright?"
"Hopefully," Teddy said, "we need him to stay where he is for another 8 weeks."
"Teddy rest and enjoy your kids," the woman said.
"I will Karen," Teddy agreed, "Leo and Allison are watching paw patrol right now."
"TV," Karen said, "when I saw you with new born Allison you said no TV for her."
"Pandemic," Teddy replied, "we need them pacified with TV and snacks so we can do this meeting."
"Downside of working from home," a man joked.
"Let's get to work, people," the general said.
Finishing the business of their call Owen and Teddy logged off.
"I'm going to take the kids to the park," Owen said, "why don't you call mom."
"Will she mind," Teddy asked.
"She knows," Owen said, "I think she's waiting for you to call her."
"I'll do that and get the laundry going," Teddy said.
"Light," Owen repeated.
"A couple pairs of your jeans are the heaviest things we have," Teddy said, "kids clothes are light."
"You heard Taves go slow," Owen said.
"You can't do this for the next two months," Teddy said, "you can't baby me and the kids. We need to be as normal as possible. I might not be able to scrub the floors or haul the groceries up but I can do other stuff. Owen you have to let me live. I'm only letting you do the park trip because I need half an hour just me."
"Are you sure you're okay," Owen asked.
"I need space and no one asking if I'm okay every 10 minutes. I need to not be touched," Teddy said.
"Okay we'll go to the park," Owen agreed, "you relax."
Owen got the kids ready to go to the park and they headed out the door.
Teddy's phone buzzed on the counter.
"Evelyn," Teddy answered.
"Owen said you might need a mom sweetheart," Evelyn said, "how are you?"
"We're not great," Teddy admitted.
"I heard about your scare," Evelyn said, "i'm looking into how I can get to you."
"Evelyn it's too dangerous," Teddy said, "stay in Seattle. It's a hot spot we don't want you to get sick."
"If this was Allison or Leo what would you be doing," Evelyn asked.
"Trying to get there," Teddy admitted.
"What are you doing right now sweetheart," Evelyn asked.
"Collecting the kids laundry," Teddy replied.
"Laundry can wait," Evelyn said, "you're going to go make yourself a cup of tea and talk to me. I'd rather be there with you to hold your hands and help look after you and the kids but the pandemic is making that hard. You're going to get some tea and find a comfortable spot and talk to me."
"Evelyn I'm fine," Teddy repeated.
"You've said fine too many times Teddy," Evelyn replied, "you are as stubborn as Owen and Megan put together. It's time to listen to me. Tea, comfy spot and tell me what your thinking about."
"I can't," Teddy said.
"You won't talk to Megan and Owen is worried about you please talk to me Teddy," Evelyn coaxed.
"I'm not talking to Megan so I don't scare her," Teddy said, "she doesn't need to know. It's her first baby she should be enjoying it not hearing all my fears."
"Then tell me," Evelyn said.
Teddy clicked the kettle on and pulled her favourite tea out of the cupboard.
"I'm scared," Teddy said, "every time he stops moving for too long or his kicks aren't as strong I think I'll lose him like I lost Joshua."
"Who is Joshua," Evelyn asked.
"Owen knows," Teddy said, "Henry and I were trying. I had just found out hours before Henry passed. I never got to tell Henry."
"What happened to Joshua," Evelyn asked.
"I lost him at 18 weeks," Teddy sobbed, "he developed VHL which is what killed Henry in the end. There was a tumor in Joshua's heart and it stopped beating. Then what happened on saturday I was scared I would lose Daniel two. And I could never face Owen if I lost our baby."
"Teddy," Evelyn soothed, "Daniel is how many weeks now?"
"33 tomorrow," Teddy said.
"So his chances are really good," Evelyn said, "he would make it and he has a brilliant, loving mother and father who would make sure he got all the care he needed."
"What if," Teddy cried, "everyone leaves me. My parents the first Allison Henry Joshua."
"You're okay Teddy " Evelyn said, "Owen chose Germany to be near you to work things out with you. He chose to be with you even though you were fighting he went to you. Teddy he loves you. Your children love you."
"I'm just scared," Teddy said.
"And you get to be," Evelyn said, "the world has tried to beat you down for the last 20 years and you've been alone. Would it help if you told me about Joshua? You were at my house a lot in that period, why didn't you tell me?"
"Only Owen knew," Teddy said, "he was the one person I told. He was with Christina but he was my best friend and was going to be with me. He was with me when I lost Joshua. Owen held me and held my hands."
"Teddy, look at that. He was with you in that moment. He brought you to me when he had to work and couldn't be with you. He made sure you had people who loved you," Evelyn said, "sweetheart I wish you would have told me then. Bill and I tried for a third after Megan. I understand sweetheart we lost two. Teddy I would have been there and held you closer. Sweetheart, I'm sorry."
"You did two," Teddy asked.
"Two," Evelyn said, "sweetheart I know how much it hurts. You lost your baby and never talked to anyone about it."
"There was only one person I wanted," Teddy said, "I couldn't have my mom. I need my mom but she's been gone 20 years."
"Teddy let me be your mom," Evelyn coaxed, "you need a mom right now and you're my daughter. I don't like seeing you hurting like this. Let me help you. What do you need?"
"I need to know Daniel will be okay," Teddy said, "I can't fail another baby. I had the same thing happen with Allison."
"And you were alone," Evelyn said, "honey Owen is there you have Leo and Allison. I'm always a phone call away any time day or night I will always answer. I just want to wrap my arms around you and hold you right now. I really am going to try getting to you before this one comes like we planned."
"Evelyn it's not safe," Teddy said, "by the time you quarantine before flying and after you're in isolation a month."
"It sounds like you need me there," Evelyn said, "a mom with you."
"I've learned to be on my own," Teddy said, "I was for so long."
"You've always been strong for our family and carried us," Evelyn said, "let us carry you. Teddy you dropped everything to fly to Seattle when they found Megan to make sure she was okay, to be there for Owen. You fought for us in ways no one else could. Its time you let us carry you and hold you us. You don't have to do it alone anymore sweetheart. What would your mom say?"
Teddy sniffled, "she'd hold me and rub my back and say baby girl I don't always understand you but I am always on your side. She would tell me she loved me."
"Teddy sweetheart," Evelyn soothed, "I love you. You have been part of this family for longer than you know. I love you and if I was there I would hold you and rub your back until you felt calmer. Today I'm going to talk to you until you feel even a little calmer."
"I need to stop thinking about this," Teddy said, "tell me everything we're missing in Seattle."
Evelyn began to talk, telling Teddy about a recent trip to the store and all the drama around people not wearing masks. Teddy began to laugh when Evelyn recounted a trick Megan played on her from a far. Evelyn kept talking, telling Teddy about the silly videos Faroke was making for her a couple times a week and the antics her cat had gotten into.
Owen came through the door with the kids.
"Grandma is on the phone," Teddy called.
"Grandma," Leo yelled running to Teddy.
"Gentle with my tummy," Teddy reminded as Leo went to jump on her.
"Leo, your mommy needs lots of hugs and love right now," Evelyn said, "can you give her a big hug and kiss for me."
Leo climbed on the window seat and wrapped his arms around Teddy's neck.
"Thanks buddy," Teddy smiled.
"I love you mommy," Leo said.
"I love you to the moon and back Leo," Teddy beamed, kissing the top of his head.
"Mom," Owen said, joining them in the window seat with Allison.
"Grandma," Allison yelled.
"Hi baby girl," Evelyn beamed, "how was the park?"
"Good," Leo said, "there were no kids."
"We're missing other kids," Owen said.
"I need to speak to owen," Evelyn said after they had chatted for a while.
"Bye Evelyn thanks for everything," Teddy smiled.
"You call me tomorrow sweetheart at the same time," Evelyn said, "you call me everyday until you feel like yourself again."
"I will," Teddy agreed," talk to you tomorrow."
Evelyn and the kids said goodbye and Owen took Teddy's phone into the bedroom. He was beyond thankful for FaceTime on days like today where he could see and talk to his mom without worrying about the costs of an extended international call.
"She's going to break Owen," Evelyn said once he was alone.
"I know," Owen said, "why I called you."
"She needs more than a mom," Evelyn said, "I don't think she ever dealt with losing Joshua. Why didn't you tell me that 9 years ago? I could have helped her then been her mom. I talked about being a young widow with her then but if I had known I would have done it differently."
"She asked me not to tell anyone," Owen said, "I didn't even know she had named him until September she kept that to herself. Joshua was her dad's name."
"You need to be home with her," Evelyn said, "I would suggest therapy. She's not doing well."
"I know," Owen said, "she's scared. I'll approach the idea with her and see if she's even open to it."
"Suggest it," Evelyn said, "she's terrified of losing you and the kids."
"I know losing people is her biggest trigger," Owen said, "she really wanted you here when the baby comes."
"Daniel," Evelyn said, "I want to be there to meet him right away."
"She told you," Owen asked.
"She said the same and I assumed," Evelyn said, "I like it traditional and manly."
"For Dan Mooney," Owen said, "he trained Teddy and I. encouraged our friendship. The day the IED went off one of the last things Dan said was that I should marry Teddy. I know he meant sooner but we will get married."
"After the baby and this virus," Evelyn said.
"Mom I've been looking for ways to bring you here but I can't see it," Owen said.
"I know," Evelyn agreed, "I'm going to call her everyday and talk. I got her smiling and laughing today."
"She will with the kids," Owen said.
"Look after her," Evelyn said, "she's looked after you for years."
"I'm trying mom," Owen said, "I don't know how because she never does this."
"Listen," Evelyn said, "hold her, tell her how much you love her, have her favourite things or what she's craving for her."
"I'm trying," Owen said, "she wants burgers and milkshakes."
"Not available in Germany," Evelyn asked.
"Hard to get good bacon," Owen said, "and cheddar cheese."
"You'll find it and be her hero," Evelyn said.
"Theres one grocery store on the base that sometimes has it," Owen said, "I might be able to pre order it."
"Do," Evelyn said.
"When we hang up," Owen agreed.
"Just be there," Evelyn said, "make this special for her."
"I will," Owen said, "we stopped at the bakery on the way home and have her favourite treats."
"Good," Evelyn said, "keep me posted."
"We will," Owen said, "Teddy's phone is about to die. Thanks mom."
"I love you," Evelyn said.
"Love you two mom," Owen said before hanging up.
In the living room Leo asked, "mommy can we dance?"
"Wait for dad," Teddy replied.
"What are we waiting for," Owen asked.
"They want to dance," Teddy said.
"We can dance," Owen said, "are you up to it?"
"I am," Teddy said, "a couple songs with my fiance and my kids."
"What do we dance to," Owen asked.
"Daddy isn't usually home when we dance is he," Teddy said, "what dance should we do?"
"Bear," Allison yelled.
"The gummy bear dance," Teddy said. She quickly opened the youtube app on the tv and found the gummy bear dance on the youtube playlist. The two kids started dancing along with the video.
"Daddy dance," Allison demanded.
"Come on mommy," Leo said, grabbing Teddy's hand.
"One or two songs," Teddy agreed.
The family of four danced along with the preschool dance videos before Owen decided it was time for quiet time.
The kids resting Owen made two cups of tea and sat with Teddy in the window seat.
"You're not okay," Owen said.
"I'm not," Teddy agreed.
"How can I help," Owen asked.
"I don't think you can," Teddy shrugged, "I don't think I can either. Your mom helped."
"What if you talked to some one," Owen suggested.
"Like therapy," Teddy asked.
"Think about it," Owen said, "you said you don't know how to help your self."
"I tried after Henry," Teddy said, "the guy nodded and grunted at me."
"Then that wasn't the right person," Owen said, "try. Someone not connected to work. We can look together."
"Does it mean I'm crazy," Teddy asked.
"No," Owen said, "I had to do it to finally be happy and know what I wanted in life."
"To reenlist when you were a single father," Teddy asked.
"To do something that had true purpose," Owen said, "then when I was offered here and the chance to be near you I had to take it."
"I'm glad you did," Teddy said, "i'm just afraid of letting you down. I hid Allison from you, her first few weeks while I figured it out were a mess. A total mess, I hardly showered, diapers exploded up her back, she cried constantly and was always nursing."
"This time will be different," Owen said, "diapers explode. Leo had a few. There was one night I was so tired after a long surgery I put his diaper on backwards and he woke up in a wet bed. We're not going to be perfect Teddy but we're here and we love them and we love each other."
"When this is over can we transfer back," Teddy asked.
"Where to," Owen asked.
"I want west coast," Teddy said, "close to your mom."
"I'd like to be close," Owen said.
"Let's ask," Teddy said, "whenever this pandemic ends we should go home. Two wars, several conflicts a pandemic. Owen we've done enough. If they can't transfer us then we look at hospitals."
"Go back to Grey Sloan," Owen said, "I would be happy there with you and our kids. Run trauma."
"Donovan the chief of staff is getting old he's older than Webber," Teddy said, "I could apply for a surgical position then when he goes take it."
"The board would hire you in a heart beat and take me back," Owen said.
"That's the new plan," Teddy said, "we ride out the rest of this pandemic then transfer home. I need to go home."
"Then that's what we do," Owen agreed. He didn't care where he lived as long as he was with Teddy and their kids. He would go to Mars if she asked him to.
