Dudley Dursley had a twin sister named Daisy and suddenly the Dursley family is not normal and Petunia does not care. See how having a child with Downs Syndrome changes the Dursleys for the better. Warning for use of the R word (once).
Petunia Dursley believed her life had started, truly started when her children were born. Daisy was first and was whisked off while Petunia worked on brining Dudley into the world. A few hours later the news was delivered by her kind doctor, Daisy had Downs Syndrome. Her doctor was wonderful and did not follow the then normal practice of mourning a child with a disability. He was ancient, sweet and gave every recourse he could to the young parents. Their neighbors were not so kind and so that was what caused the young family to sell and move to another neighborhood on the edge of Crawley, a diverse kind neighborhood called Fletcher Woods. They lived in four bedroom two and a half bath at number 7 Greenwood Rd.
It was to this house that Harry Potter was delivered one cold November night. Petunia was angry at Dumbledore but saw that Harry needed her and she got him into therapy right away. This helped him settle into life at the Dursley household as Petunia was not worried about being normal, nor was Vernon. In fact Vernon found having a child he took good care of with a disability helped him in Grunnings and his star rose as the father who did everything for his children and he adopted his nephew as well. Harry knew only love in that house and he took Daisy under his wing as did Dudley. She was delayed in meeting her milestones but she did meet them and everyone celebrated when she did.
When all three started school, Daisy was put in a wonderful program that helped her grow and learn. Everyone at the school knew not to mess with Daisy or call her names in front of Harry or Dudley. Daisy made Dudley better, instead of a fat angry spoiled brat of a boy, Dudley was a stocky strong boy who took care of his sister and worked hard in school. Harry was able to soar in his studies and all were well cared for and loved. Even aunt Marge knew not to say or do anything to hurt Daisy as Petunia ripped her a new one for how she treated her daughter. Daisy was different but she was still a person and deserved to be treated with love and respect.
The years passed and Harry was both dreading and looking forward to Hogwarts. He was dreading it as he was going to be away from his sister and brother but looking forward to it as he was going to get to learn magic. It was Daisy who helped Harry feel better about going to Hogwarts. After her piano lessons one day she sat down with Harry and smiled at her younger brother, for brother Harry was. She was a bright child, something many who saw her did not see, they saw a child with Downs Syndrome and that was it. Many children with Downs Syndrome were bright as there was a spectrum that many did not know.
"Harry I am going to be fine, I have Betty watch me." Daisy said, Betty was Daisy's best friend who has Cerebral Palsy and was in a wheelchair and would be for life, "she will make sure I am fine."
"As will I." Dudley said, "I am not going to Smeltings, I got our sister to take care of."
"I will miss you guys." Harry said.
"We will miss you too." Daisy replied, "but you will write lots and so will we."
Harry went to Hogwarts a different boy, he was loved and wanted by his family. When he met Ron he told him of his wonderful brother and sister and his adoptive parents. He saw Hermione who he knew from their days in primary school and met Neville Longbottom at that time as well. He took Neville under his wing at once and helped him find his toad. Then he took out a game to play called Uno and the pre-teens settled in for a fun game. When Draco came Harry remained polite and Draco went off thinking he had a friend when Harry only wanted to keep him at arms length.
Harry was sorted to Gryffindor and from then on made it his life's goal in school to help Neville. Harry was used to being a helper and he was able to help Neville get his wand to work for him. That and he paired with him in potions and made sure that no cauldrons got melted. He showed genuine care for Neville and adopted him as a brother. This did not go unnoticed at all, and with Harry working with Neville the shy boy became much more confident than he ever had been before. In fact Harry and Neville could be found together more often than not and they added another to their group, Hermione Granger who they helped learn social grace and how to relax and enjoy life.
Dumbledore was pleased at how well Harry was doing and he had visited Petunia who had scolded him for endangering Harry the way he had. Daisy came in and stood up for Dumbledore stating that he was from another era and did not know better. Dumbledore fell in love with the muggle girl as she reminded him of his sister when she was not in a bout of insanity. With permission of her parents he doted on her and became a grandfather figure, the fact he knew how to move in the muggle world undetected was a bonus to the Dursleys. Dudley liked him but did not think him as cool as Daisy thought of him. At Hogwarts Harry made friends easily with children from all houses, he was well liked and when asked why he called the Dursleys mom and dad he had a very good answer.
"My birth parents, the wonderful caring people they were to me gave their lives to keep me alive. Petunia and Vernon gave me a home, and I think we all owe that to Daisy. Daisy is the one that taught my adopted parents how to truly love and Daisy is the one who has made me who I am." Harry had said.
"Yea but isn't she a retard?" Smith had asked.
"Please do not use that word." Harry said, "retard is what you do to bread to help it rise, not what you use to describe someone else. She is not half formed, she is perfect in everyway. Yea she has Downs Syndrome but she is my sister and my family."
"Sorry, I did not mean any harm, you really care about her?" Smith asked.
"Yea, I do, she is family and I am proud of her." Harry replied.
Rita Skeeter decided to investigate the Dursley family to see if there was dirt on them. What she found was a loving very not normal family that had embraced long ago that they would not be normal. That had spent their lives ever since Daisy was born taking care of her and loving her. Normal they had found was not something they wanted at all as it did not make them happy. It seemed that having a child with a disability had turned them into better versions of themselves. Rita decided that an interview could wait, why hurt a good family like this?
The years passed, Voldemort tried to come back but was unable, his loyal death eaters died. Harry grew into a good man and graduated with honors from Hogwarts. Daisy was always cheering him on and when he decided to become a healer and specialized in the mind, Daisy was there. Harry did not get married until he was thirty and that was to Gabrelle Delacour which made the Weasleys his closest magical family. He bought a house in the muggle world as Dudley had taken a job in Japan and his mom and dad had downsized, retired and decided to spend a few years touring America in an RV. Harry did not mind having Daisy live with him, not at all. In fact he was thrilled as she was very good at helping with the children he had Gabrelle had. He was glad that Daisy had been born, she was a blessing no matter what anyone said and she made everyone's lives better.
This is dedicated to a friend's child who has Downs Syndrome and is much like Daisy in this story. So that is why I decided to write this.
