"Oh, Satonaka. What are you doing here?"

"Hi, Detective Dojima. Um... sorry for dropping in unannounced like this, but I was hoping I could talk to you about something."

"Oh. Sure. I'm not sure how much I can really help, but come on in."

"Thanks."

As she stepped into the Dojima residence and removed her shoes, Chie mused that she had never actually been here while Yu wasn't before. She had seen both Detective Dojima and his daughter since he'd left, of course, but she'd had no reason to go there herself as, even when she did spend time with Nanako, her father would pick her up, never missing a chance to mention that it was only thanks to Yu that he was able to do so. It was one of the things that kept Yu's friends from really feeling his absence - the constant reflection of the impact he'd had on their lives made it feel like he was still in Inaba alongside them.

Chie followed her host into the living area, where he offered her a seat at the table and a lemonade. Given the excruciating heat outside, Chie gladly took him up on his offer. Then, she took a second glass after she downed the first in one go, eliciting a chuckle from Dojima and a blush from herself.

Once her second drink was out of convenient reach and Dojima was sat across from her, he asked, "So, what was it you wanted to talk about?" There was a certain fatherly quality to his tone as he asked this - something she never would have expected to hear from him when she'd first met him.

"Well, I decided a while ago that I wanna be a cop."

"Oh? I suppose solving that murder case gave you a taste for the pursuit of justice, huh?"

"Heh, yeah, you could say that. I love this town and I wanna do everything I can to protect that peace we fought so hard to earn, you know?"

Dojima smiled gently. "I'm happy to hear that. The force could use more people like you. We've got enough jaded old men like me around as is. If that's what you want to do, I'll support you wholeheartedly. As long as you've thought seriously about the risks." His expression and tone were much more stern towards the end. She had expected as much, of course.

"I have. I'll admit, it sounds scary, but I can't help but feel like this is what I was meant to do, you know? Like... Like all my interests and experiences were all meant to guide me toward this path. I know the dangers involved, but I feel like, after everything we went through over the last year and a half, I should be able to do this. Especially with someone like you looking out for me."

Dojima chuckled almost bitterly. "I wouldn't feel so assured from working under me. I had a pretty poor work-life balance before Yu came along. That, and I didn't see that something was up with Adachi until you kids forced it out of him. Neglectful and ignorant. If anything, I should be the one taking inspiration from you kids."

Chie gave a sympathetic sigh. "No one wants to see the bad in people they care about," she said softly. "Or themselves. I learned that the hard way last year. I had to acknowledge and accept a part of myself that I didn't want to admit was there. We all did. And we came out stronger because of it. And you're on the way there too. You've already turned things around with Nanako-chan-"

"Only because of Yu," Dojima interjected.

"So? I only faced my other self with help from Yu-kun, Yosuke and Teddie. And then we helped Yukiko and Kanji-kun and Rise-chan and Naoto-kun do the same. There's no shame in accepting help from others to improve yourself. If there was, I wouldn't even be here right now."

Dojima shot her a quizzical look.

"See, I was hoping you could help keep me motivated. I'm not the most easily motivated person; my grades will tell you that... But, I'm sure that if I have you pushing me forward, I can find the will to go at it until I can be someone that can protect this town my friends and I love so much, all by myself."

Dojima sat in silence for a moment, mulling over what Chie had just proposed. Then, he gave a wry smile. "So, I'm just a stand-in for Yu, huh?"

"Heheeeh, yeah, kinda..." she admitted, rubbing the back of her head in embarrassment.

Dojima laughed heartily. "You're honest, if nothing else. That's a good trait for any cop. I'd be honoured to help keep pushing you on toward your dream."

Just as he said this, the front door opened.

"And I know just how to do it. Hey, Nanako!"

"What's up, Dad?" the younger girl asked as she entered from the entryway. Her eyes lit up as she spotted their guest. "Chie-chan!"

"Hi, Nanako-chan," Chie greeted with a grin.

"Guess what, Nanako. Chie-chan says she wants to be a police officer."

"Really!?" Nanako gasped. "That's so cool!"

"Isn't it?"

"Yeah! You'll make a really awesome policewoman, Chie-cha- Um... Officer Satonaka."

Chie couldn't help but grin. She rolled out of her seat and landed in a low stance with her arms outstretched, right hand taking the shape of a gun. "Freeze, scumbag! You're under arrest!"

Nanako laughed giddily, clapping her hands as she jumped up and down. Although she only done something as simple as amusing a child, Chie's grin threatened to stretch right off her cheeks.

"Alright, that's enough, you two," Dojima chuckled. "Go take your stuff upstairs, Nanako."

"Okay. I'll be back in a minute."

"See you in a few, Nanako-chan." Once Nanako was out of earshot, Chie turned on Dojima. "That was cheap, Dojima-san," she grumbled.

"But its exactly what you need, right?" he said with a grin.

Chie smiled. "Yeah. Can't get more motivated than not wanting to disappoint Nanako-chan."
