"Walkers, around the corner!" Cristy exclaimed as she noticed them coming, attracted by the bullets that were being fired.
Lee had his sights on Kenzie, who had obviously betrayed them. He took several shots but she kept evading them by taking cover behind the trees, while the rest of the group was fighting back the walkers they had attracted.
Clementine was taking cover beside Cass, and who still hadn't adjusted to the new life, being isolated from all of it at their farm didn't help.
"Gotcha.." Lee fired and managed to hit her on her neck, causing her to fall.
Everyone waited for a bit as the group recovered their footing. Emile was already on his feet.
"Is there a hole on the other side?" He asked.
"Uhh... Yeah.." replied Amanda, in a sort of confused tone.
"Good. Means we won't have to go through the trouble of getting the bullet out. Now we don't waste time. We get in this damn car and we get outta here." Emile jumped in the car, as everyone else piled in. They all managed to fit, as Mike was on the wheel, and they took off.
Lee leaned his head against the window, trying to calm down and relax after what had happened. Clementine leaned against his shoulder, as usual.
"Lee?"
"Yeah?"
"We didn't do anything bad to her. Why was she shooting at us?"
"I don't know. Sometimes you get blamed for things that happen to others. That's what happens."
"Where are we going?"
"We had agreed on keep going north right?" Mika looked at everyone for confirmation.
"That's the plan. Although I don't know how much we can go on without winter gear," added Coach. Living in the south his whole life, he managed to get used to the warm humid temperature, so he thought it would be hard for him up there.
"It's not cold when you're on the move all the time," added Bonnie. Back where Clay had his camp, it was chilly most of the time.
At that point, it almost felt like a road trip. Everyone was together, at some point even laughing about certain things. They were calm, relaxed and not paranoid and aware about some stuff. Mostly everyone had drifted off to a deep sleep, except for Mike, Emile and Kate, who had agreed to sort of watch guard for him as he drives, since the road can be unpredictable.
Several hours passed. The road just kept going, endless in some form.
Clementine leaned against the window watching the trees as they passed by. Her leg was leaning against the little box in the middle which was holding a map of the area.
"The gas is running low. We should stop ahead to refuel," Mike made note, as he look ahead for a clearing.
"Alright. It'll give us a chance to stretch our legs a bit."
They pulled into a pit stop as they began to refuel the car, which didn't take long. Emile and Dalvin looked at the map, making sure they were still on track.
"Everyone good? Back on board." Several minutes later everyone climbed back in as they kept going down the road.
"Y'know these roads kinda remind me of the trip I took from Savannah all the way to Pittsburgh. Hell of a trip, but I made some good friends along the way. Shame what happened to them," Coach commented.
"Same with us. We've all made good friends but we end up losing them one point or another." Kate replied.
"Residential estate. 12 miles down the road. We can stay there for the next day or so." Cristy said out loud, reading the sign on the edge of the road.
"Why a day or so? I thought it wasn't safe to stay put." Claire replied.
"Yeah. But down here, estates have walls. They're secluded, and there's a lot of houses."
"We got enough of gas to make it then?"
Mike took a look.
"Yeah. Should be enough."
"You'll be in charge this time. Once we get to the estate, what are we going to be looking for?" Lee told her.
"Me in charge? I'll prefer you call the shots. But we obviously need to clear it out. Once that's done, we make sure the walls aren't destroyed. If that's the case we'll just have to be on high alert all the time."
They pulled up to the estate, where the main gate was smashed in, by the looks of it, it appears to be that a car crashed into it.
" Here's our first issue." Emile began to pull the metal bars apart to the side.
"We can push those cars and block it off." Lee suggested.
"I'll go check the walls. It'll give us a idea of how big this place exactly is." Mika added. The walls went around the area, she thought it had to be big.
"I'll go with. Just in case." Zoey suggested. She nodded in response as they took off.
"The rest of us should go in, start clearing out these houses. And the bodies. We'll start a pile on the grass here."
"Back to hauling corpses," Coach laughed a bit as he and Mike entered a house to clear.
Luckily for them, the estate was kind of small so there weren't many houses, which meant they were all close together, which was better just in case something happens.
"See that over there? It looks like some type of armory." Kate told Claire. It looked like some type of locker.
"Yeah. It's worth checking." They kicked it open and several bullet shells fell to the ground, but they were empty.
"Damn. Looks like we got here too late."
"I guess so. Let's clear this house, now that we're in here. So that we can start putting our stuff in here." Claire suggested, as she started to organize some of the furniture.
"Yeah, because I don't like the idea of having my stuff in the car." Kate replied sarcastically, they both laughed.
Lee stood at the entrance of the estate, making sure everything was fine. He felt that they could all be safe here. Clementine stood by his side.
He remembered what he told Kenny. He knew he was doing things right if she was still alive, and she is.
"How do you feel about this place Clem?"
"It looks okay. I just don't like that it's in front of the road. It can be dangerous."
"You have a good point there. But not a lot of people are driving these days. We'll make sure to keep it safe for all of us."
In the other house, Coach was clearing out a closet when he heard a noise come deeper in the room. He threw some of the stuff in the room to the side when a child walker lunged at him, gripping his arm.
"Fuck! Mike, get your ass over here!" He yelled, as he slammed it against the wall in a effort to get it off him. Mike ran into the room, and grabbed a pencil on a nearby desk to kill it.
"Damn. Where was it?"
"In the damn closet." He replied, shrugging himself off from the ordeal.
"Close call. This one is cleared out, the girls cleared out the other one, so we should be good with the rest. let's start setting up for the night."
Coach took a deep breath and wiped the sweat from his forehead as he followed him out of the room.
Meanwhile, Zoey and Mika made sure the perimeter wasn't damaged and was safe enough. Sure enough, there was only vegetation growing on the wall due to Lack of maintenance, but it was all put together well.
"We got lucky on this one. The wall looks sturdy enough." Zoey commented as she pushed on the wall a bit to prove its strength.
"On this side it is, what about the one facing the road? People might pass by and see and.. well.. You know."
"The two little pillars by the front, we can set up some guard post or something. Keeping in mind whatever passes by is probably not going to be friendly."
"Alright. Our work here is done. Let's head back."
Coach was in the courtyard with everyone else, debating on what to do next.
"We had agreed on staying for a day or two. The plan wasn't to be here until something happens," Emile commented, pacing around the area.
"Let's say nothing happens in these 2 days. What if we establish something good here? We're just gonna throw it away because we wanted to go back into the hell out there?" Amanda added on.
"Have you-" Emile slung his arms around in frustration.
Dalvin approached him.
"Hey relax. We're gonna talk about this together, as a group."
"Have you thought about everything else that comes with being safe? I don't see a town nearby to scavenge, I don't see a lake for water, none of that shit. It's all worth crap if you don't have all that." Emile added on.
"Look, this is not a permanent solution. As much as we might want one, this ain't it. The weather looks bad, but as soon as it clears, we're going back out there." Lee added. He didn't want the group to be fighting, so a decision had to be made.
"I don't want to add more negativity, but you all know that walkers aren't the only danger out there. People are. Keep a eye open, whatever we decide in these 2 days, anything or anyone comes near that gate, we make sure they don't hurt anyone." Cristy looked across the road into the deep woods, several thoughts of dangers ran through her head at once.
"These houses are cleared. It's late, we should get some rest. If something moves the cars, we'll hear." Mike had set up a type of trap that makes a small, low pitched noise if it's moved, which would give them enough time to react.
Lee nodded as they went into the house. It was really spacious, and it reminded him of the time they spent at Ridgedale. They set up makeshift beds on the floor. Lee stared into the white coated wall as he tried to fall asleep.
He was feeling a bit under pressure. The group looked to him for answer's, and if he gave one, some of them might be upset about it. But they had all made a plan, and he wanted to stick to it. That was the final decision.
"Alright," Bonnie said, as she was perched on the window as a lookout. "The rain is starting to come down, no walkers or anything. We should be good for the night." She jumped down and turned off the lamp they had found and layed down.
"Good. We'll worry about shit tomorrow," Coach mumbled.
From a distance, the estate still looked dead, as if no one was there, but through the binoculars and the rifle scope of two men who were watching, they knew that it was no longer abandoned. They observed the lights go out, the rain started to come down harder, as they got up from their spot and treked deep into the woods once again.
