Hogwarts: Beginning of Beltane
The Beltane break for Hogwarts students was one week. As other students departed by the Hogwarts Express, the floo network or safe disapparation points, Harry and his friends met Sirius outside the main gates. He was driving a Victorian era coach with two hippogriffs pulling it.
Harry had seen the coaches that the school used to shuttle students between the school and Hogsmead Station, but they were nothing like this. Every inch of the coach was made of rare wood that gleamed with perfect lacquer and deep polish. Every place that metal-work was visible, he could see what could only be Goblin wrought silver. Even the outer bands of the wheels, which would have been made of wrought iron on a muggle coach gave off the gleam of the invincible metal. The Black family crest was boldly displayed on the door panel that Harry could see. The draught animals themselves were a matched pair, not quite magnificent as Blackstorm, but unusual with their blue-black fur and silver plumage. Their tack appeared to be made of dragon-hide with more of the Goblin silver holding it together. The entire rig just screamed elegance and wealth. Topping it all off was Sirius, sitting in the driver's seat, his hand on the brake lever, resplendent in a set of electric-blue robes that shimmered in the sunlight. He just sat there, grinning while Harry took it all in.
When Harry found his voice again, he asked, "Sirius, what is this?"
Sirius made a sweeping motion with his arm that took in the whole rig, "This, my son, is a special request from a great lady."
Harry inspected the rig closely as he talked, "Did you just have this made? Where did those hippogriffs come from? It's just beautiful!"
Sirius shook his head, "Woah there Pup! You're starting to sound like Hermione. This was stored in the coach-house at Black manor. It's been in the family for generations. We use it when we want to arrive in style at funerals, major parties, state occasions and …"
Harry finished for him, "Weddings!"
Sirius nodded, "Exactly. For Black family weddings, we use it for the bridal party. Andy may not be too keen about a lot of pure-blood traditions, but she insisted on this one. I thought it a good idea to get it out and check that all the enchantments are working. In fact, Lord Longbottom has requested that I bring you and all your friends to Black manor in it."
"But father, we are only going up to the cottage, aren't we?", Harry asked.
"No pup. There has been a change of plans. I have been instructed to bring you all to Black manor. Things will be explained to you there."
Harry drew his wand and pointed it at the coach asking, "May I check it out?"
Sirius said with some mock sternness, "You had better do that. As Lord Black, you are responsible for the safety of your guests."
Harry ran a series of detection spells. As he progressed, he found something akin to the enchantments that made his broom fly. He also found shielding spells and a powerful disillusionment charm. There was one other charm that he did not recognize and filed that fact for later. This was the 18th century version of the car he flew to Hogwarts with Ron at the beginning of his second year. It also reminded him strongly of the carriage the Beauxbaton students arrived in at the beginning of last year. Inside he found expansion charms and warming charms. During the hot weather, it could even stay cool inside on demand. Sure enough, there was not so much as a single iron nail or screw to find anywhere. Every single bit was either fastened with dove-tail joints, drill and dowel or goblin wrought silver. Everything, right down to the leaf-springs was built to last forever.
When Harry finished his examination, he knew that the carriage responded to the thoughts of the man in the driver's seat, similar to the way his broom worked. The hippogriffs seemed to be just for show. Harry bowed to each of the beasts in turn and checked their tack. It wasn't bad, but he made a few adjustments here and there to make them more comfortable. A number of the students stopped to stare at the sight. Sirius gently shooed them away saying things like, "Don't you have a train to catch?"
When Harry was satisfied that the coach was ready to go, he looked up to see his friends standing by. Susan, Ron, Hermione, Neville, Hannah, the twins and Ginny were all standing there expectantly. His elves Kreacher was putting the steps down for them to board while Dobby was securing luggage on the roof-racks.
Harry said to them, "Welcome aboard. I suppose you will all be my guests for the Beltane Holidays."
"Surprise?", Neville asked weakly.
Hermione spoke, "Sirius, Hannah, Ron and I have prefect duties aboard the train. Perhaps the elves could bring us to you after we reach Kings Cross Station?"
Sirius shook his head, "Don't worry about a thing. That's all taken care of. You won't want to miss this! Besides, everyone on the train has been classified as high priority assets, likely to be targeted by Tom Riddle and his goons. There are ten aurors assigned to security and it is they who will maintain discipline and do the patrolling. The other prefects, the Head Boy and the Head Girl will be taking orders from them or they will have a very unhappy Kingsley Shacklebolt to deal with."
That said, Harry warmly greeted each of his friends as they climbed inside. The ladies, he offered a steady hand as they climbed the two steps. Harry went to follow his friends inside, but Sirius stopped him, "You're riding with me, Son. You need to learn how to drive this thing."
Harry asked, "What? Me drive? Why?".
Sirius snorted, "That, Pup, is because as lord of the house, it will be your duty to drive the bridal party to the ceremony."
Harry just shook his head, "I don't know if I'm ever going to get used to this."
While he spoke, Dobby put the stairs away and secured the doors on both sides. His work done, he quickly scrambled up the ladder to join Kreacher on the roof-rack. Harry asked, Aren't you two going to ride inside?"
Kreacher and Dobby both looked horrified. "No, Master. That would not do!", Dobby said in his high pitched voice.
Harry climbed up the ladder to sit beside Sirius as he said, "OK, suit yourselves. I suppose you'll be safe enough if you hold on tight."
To Sirius he said, "OK Dogfather, Let's go!"
Once Harry was seated, Sirius gave the reins a flick. The Hippogriffs quickly built up speed to what passed for a gallop with their mismatched feet. The coach hadn't gone more than 30 yards before they became airborne. Sirius pulled a lever next to the brake as the wheels left the ground. He said, "We should be invisible now."
The hippogriffs joyfully spread their wings and rocketed through the sky. Harry watched the world tilt to one side as Sirius masterfully banked the coach into a turn. The air grew thinner and cooler as they climbed toward the clouds.
During his time with the Mystics, Harry had learned how to care for dozens of magical creatures. He had also learned how to ride everything that one could ride, including the flying mounts. But he had yet to learn the first thing about driving a team. If he was any judge, Sirius was good at it. He was paying close attention.
The time seemed to pass by very quickly. It wasn't too long before Sirius gave the reins a double flick and the hippogriffs flared their wings to descend.
Harry opened the hatch behind him that communicated with the inside of the coach saying, "Thank-you for flying the friendly skies of Black Airlines. We will be landing shortly. Please remain seated until the coach comes to a full and complete stop."
When the ground came up to meet them, they landed in a village where there was nothing but a group of small cottages. Sirius pushed a lever to disengage the invisibility then he gently pulled back on the reins while applying the brake until the coach came to a halt. Two individuals appeared running towards them wearing the scarlet robes of the Aurors.
Dobby leapt to the ground so quickly that Harry wasn't sure that he used the ladder. He was already deploying the steps and unlatching the coach door when the Aurors reached them.
As the students exited the coach, Harry asked, "What's going on here? Where are we?"
Alastor Moody walked out of a cottage, "Come along lad. We will answer your questions."
The Master Auror led them inside a cottage where they were greeted by the General, Alice and Madam Bones.
"Harry, Neville", said Alice as she rushed to hug the two boys.
Meanwhile Amelia greeted Susan and Hannah.
After the formalities were over, Frank had them sit around the table and said, "I know you all have a lot of questions. At the moment, we are living here amidst all the protection that the Ministry could arrange. The location of this place is kept safe by an enchantment which cannot be broken unless one meets certain requirements. Since we don't have any connection to the floo network we had to bring all of you here in person."
"The war preparations are in full swing. We are training morning, noon and night. Albus had to make sure that there were no students left in the castle during these holidays because we are going to do some drills there."
They all nodded.
Frank continued, "We are about as ready as we are ever going to get for the final battle now. We have a plan to lure Tom Riddle to the castle at a time of our choosing."
"What is the plan?", Harry asked him.
"Well, there is a certain person who will write a letter to him explaining that he has been living under the radar of the Ministry and Voldemort himself. He will explain that he heard something called a horcrux has been found and turned over to the Ministry. The unspeakables do not as yet have any way to destroy such a thing. It has been sent to Hogwarts for safe keeping. Once a certain TM Riddle receives this report, He will come to Hogwarts running with all the force he can muster. It's going to get ugly."
Harry nodded, "That's a fine plan, General but there is still one other horcrux left."
Frank sighed, "I know. Our best intelligence…", he looked significantly at Harry, "is that she is kept safe at a place that is under a Fidelius Charm. If she does not poke her head out, the only way we will ever find her is to wrest that secret from the mind of Tom himself."
Harry considered, "That would be difficult, but not impossible."
Frank confessed, "We are hoping that he will want to keep her close by. That would mean that she will not be far away when the battle begins. For now, Albus is making every effort to locate her."
Harry said, "I sure hope you're right. It would be just too bad if we manage to destroy his body only for him to pop up again in a few years."
Frank nodded. "Too right."
Then he lightened up a bit, "Now that you're all caught up, we have a wedding or three to prepare for from what I understand. Your orders are to take care of your guests and have a wonderful time. Is that understood?"
Grinning, Harry snapped off a salute, "Yes sir!"
Frank returned the salute with a warm smile. He said, "You are to take Ron, Hermione and the other Weasley children to Black Manor. From there Arthur and others can take them away by side along apparition."
Straightaway Alastor Moody escorted Hannah outside and disapparated with her to her home. Harry loaded the rest of his friends aboard the coach and with Sirius by his side, drove them to Black Manor. Other than a little instruction with the reins, Harry handled the job just fine. The elves had already gone ahead with the luggage, so Harry had to handle the steps himself.
When they arrived at Black Manor, Molly Weasley was there to greet them. Harry expressed his surprise, "Lady Weasley? What are you doing here?"
Molly just laughed. With mock solemnity she intoned, "Lord Peverell, well met." Then she said, "We can talk about that after you are comfortable." She escorted Hermione inside with her children while Sirius helped Harry to find the carriage house and stables. He needed to know where everything went for his duties tomorrow. It only took Harry a few minutes to unhitch the hippogriffs, park the coach and store the tack. But he spent another 20 minutes or more grooming and feeding the hippogriffs. Harry was strange to them but they warmed up to him quickly.
Sirius observed, "Keep that up and they'll be giving you Hagrid's job next."
Harry threw an arm around his Godfather and said sincerely, "Those are mighty big shoes to fill. Now let's get inside before Molly sticks the house elves on us."
When they arrived in the sitting room, they found that they had started on refreshments while his place at the head of the table was kept vacant.
After they were seated, Sirius started speaking, "The wedding of Bill Weasley was supposed to take place at the Burrow when things were finalized between the House of Weasley and the Delacour family. Sadly however, the burrow has been burned down. The seat of Power of House Weasley was taken away when their Wizengamot seat was taken. That left them nowhere to conduct the marriages of their children as per the old tradition. Arthur asked me if they could conduct the marriage at the Black Manor and I agreed. It is also better with a view to security. Monsieur Delacour is arriving tomorrow with a number of wizards and witches who will be hosted by the Ministry as a gesture of friendship. These wizards and witches are mostly those who will be fighting with us in the battle. With them coming for this reason, it will be almost impossible for the death eaters to guess that they have come for any other reason. Viktor Krum has also asked permission to bring the ship to Hogwarts, the very same one that brought the contingent of Durmstrang for the Triwizard tournament. Albus agreed, of course."
Molly objected, "But Sirius, there are children of Death eaters at the castle right now. Won't they get suspicious if the ship shows up at Hogwarts?"
Sirius grinned, "Not to worry. Albus has already seen to it. He told his teachers to tell all the students that not one single student will be allowed to remain at the castle once the school broke for Beltane holidays. The school is empty save for the staff and the Aurors who are posted there."
Harry asked, "Alright is there anything else that I need to know or do?"
Sirius grinned, "There is one thing actually. We have to go pay a visit to a certain person."
Bill and Fleur
Bill's wedding was set for the day before Beltane. The wedding party from Fleur's side arrived the day before that. While Sirius took the coach to Hogwarts, Arthur was waiting for the arrival of the Delacours at the international port key station along with a number of the Aurors that had been assigned to provide security for the weddings.
From there, only the Delacours and one Monsieur Bossompierre were to go on to Black Manor and the others would be sent to Hogwarts. They would be guests of the school for two days to participate in training sessions with the British Aurors. After that, so as not to attract too much attention, they would be dispersed to guest houses. Still, they would be gathering at the Ministry of Magic for daily practice sessions until the final battle. Moody was looking forward to putting the French and Bulgarian volunteers through their paces.
Since Moody would be busy coordinating the exercises at Hogwarts, he assigned some of his top lieutenants to oversee security for the events. He appointed Kingsley, Higgins and Robards to take care of it.
The wedding and the dinner followed by the ball were supposed to go up to mid-night. The event would have gone later but the weddings for Sirius to Emmeline and Remus to Tonks were the next day. They wanted people to have some party left in them.
On the day the Delacours were to arrive, Arthur arrived at the international portkey station early in the morning. Once they were received through customs, he took them by way of another port-key to the grounds of Black Manor.
The elves were hard at work in the densest part of the woods on the grounds. This was the place where there was a circle of stone, steeped in magic. Only Blacks and very rarely, the closest of friends to the Blacks were ever permitted there. This was the seat of the original power of the Black family. Similar to the way the Ministry found the veil and built the Department of Mysteries and subsequently the entire ministry around it, the Blacks found this stone circle, made by a vanished people and built their ancestral home around it. The family considered the stone circle to be a sacred place.
While Arthur was meeting the Delacours, Molly was at work. She had been seeing to the preparation of the house and the rooms where the Delacours would be staying. Sirius could see that she was getting flustered with all the work that she had taken on.
He walked up to her, "Molly, we can have Winky do all this. Why are you tiring yourself out?"
She smiled, "No, thank-you Sirius. I know she could do all this. I could do it a lot faster with magic too. But, I've just got to keep busy It calms me down."
Sirius suppressed a laugh. Molly looked to be anything but calm to him. He smiled as he asked, "Is everything to your satisfaction now?"
Molly stopped for a minute. With her hands on her hips, she surveyed the scene carefully then declared, "Yes. I can't think of another thing."
Sirius chuckled and said, "That's good because that sounds like Arthur with the Delacours now."
By the time they arrived at the front entrance of the manor, Harry was already there, pretending to kiss Madam Delacour's knuckles, "Charmante Madame."
Once they had all exchanged pleasantries, Molly showed them to their rooms. While his mother was occupied, Ron grabbed Harry's attention, "Mate, we need to talk."
Harry nodded, "let's go to the stables. No one will hear us there."
When they were in the stable and comfortable, Harry asked him, "So what's bothering you?"
He began, "I just wanted to know what will happen now. The war is almost upon us."
Harry grinned, "We've worked that out as well as we can, Ron. We're going to put all that aside until the weddings are over. The question that's much more important to you right now is, 'Can you dance?'"
Ron shook his head, "What? No. How's that more important than fighting Riddle?"
Harry snorted, "OK, but I will say 'I told you so.', when Hermione doesn't get to dance with you at your brother's wedding. I would have thought that you learned your lesson after last year's Yule Ball."
Ron argued, "Do you really think that sort of thing matters to girls?"
Harry snorted again, "Ron, I'm shocked. I'm about as aware of girl's feelings as a medium sized boulder, but even I know that they love to dance. If you won't do it, she'll be dancing with Viktor again."
Ron's face coloured, "NO! What can I do?"
Harry reached out and gave Ron a smack on the knee, "Don't worry about a thing, mate. Stay right here. I'll send out Hermione and Dobby with a wizarding wireless so you can work on your dance steps. If she can't handle you, I don't know who can." As he got up to leave Harry added, "And don't come in until you have the basic steps down."
Harry summoned Dobby at once and gave him instructions. That done, he walked back to the manor house.
No sooner was Harry back in the door than Sirius accosted him, "Hey Pup, there is something that needs your personal attention."
Harry asked, "Sure thing, Dogfather. What is it?"
Sirius admitted, "With everything that's been going on, I forgot to shop for you."
Harry shrugged, "Shop? Shop for what?"
Sirius said, "Clothes. We can't have the Lord of the Manor looking like a beggar at my wedding, can we?"
Harry shook his head, "Really Sirius. I have tons of formal robes. I hardly go about looking like a beggar anymore."
Sirius barked his laugh, "Just humor me, Pup. You have an appointment at Twilfit and Tattings in half an hour. You'd better get going."
Harry asked, "Are you coming with me?"
As he handed Harry a substantial sack of gold, Sirius shook his head, "Are you kidding? There's no way that I can get away. What about Heiress Bones, I hear she has wonderful taste?"
Harry shook his head morosely, "No way. Auntie wants a day with her niece. She won't be arriving until tomorrow."
Sirius just shrugged, "tough luck, Pup. You'll have to go on your own."
Harry just shook his head and walked down to the kitchens where the great fireplace was located. As he approached, Robards approached him, "Going somewhere, Lord Peverell?"
Harry said, "I have to go clothes shopping."
Robards looked at Harry like he had just grown two heads, "What? No. you can't. I'll have to assign a security detail to you. Let me round up some men."
Harry said, "Don't worry about it. I have my own security wherever I go. They're pretty discrete. I don't want to attract any attention if I can help it."
Robards said, "Alright then. You can't go looking like you then."
Harry said, "I already thought of that." With that, he applied his wand and quickly transformed his appearance. By the time he was done, He looked like a stockier version of Ron.
Robards nodded in approval, "That's pretty good. If anyone asks, your name is Barney Weasley. You're in town for your cousin's wedding. I'm still not comfortable sending you alone though."
Harry snorted, "that's alright Robards, I'll just tell Alastor that I gave you the slip."
Robards cringed, "He'll have my head on a platter for that."
Robards tapped the fireplace with his wand to temporarily remove the block to the floo network.
Harry threw a pinch of the floo powder into the flames and intoned, "The Leaky Cauldron."
Robards said, "I'll reconnect in precisely three hours. Don't be late."
Diagon Alley
Harry strode out of the emerald flames at The Leaky Cauldron. Old Tom looked up hopefully, but Harry waved him off saying, "Just passing through."
Old Tom went back to polishing the same clean glass he'd been working on for the last hour. Business had been slow recently. People just didn't stop to talk anymore.
Harry tapped his wand to the bricks. As the entrance revealed itself, he was shocked to see all the changes since his last visit.
He stepped out to see the street nearly deserted. Aurors were patrolling at regular intervals. Many of the stores were boarded up. Notices on the doors said, "Owl order only until further notice." It also seemed that there were wanted Posters plastered on every available surface. As Harry took a closer look, he noted with some satisfaction that a great many of those death eaters would never bother anyone again, thanks to The Order of the Snow Leopard. As he headed toward Twilfit and Tattings, there were occasional groups of shoppers. They moved quickly, in small groups, casting their eyes about them as they went. Nobody was stopping to chat or look into store windows.
Harry quickly realized that he was the only person there by himself. About the same time, a pair of Aurors must have noticed too. In their scarlet robes they approached him at a trot with their wands pointed at him.
One of them said, "Stop right there".
They were obviously newly minted Aurors. Harry noted that they were watching his hands and perfectly in step as they double-timed it over to him. He thought about having a little dueling practice with them, but quickly realized that they might not have a sense of humor about it. He kept his hands in sight. When they approached, He asked them, "What may I do for you officers?"
The second Auror snarled, "Don't get smart with me. What are you doing here all by yourself?"
At this, Harry couldn't suppress a smile, "Really officer? Manners, please. I'm not looking for any trouble."
"Don't try to draw your wand or we will be forced to use lethal force against you."
Harry said mildly, "I wouldn't even think about it. Now, what may I do for you?"
One of them, the more perceptive of the two, could see that Harry was under a glamour charm and said, "Drop your glamour, right now."
Harry said confidentially, "That would not be a good idea. Not out here."
The Auror said, "Show me some identification right now and drop that glamour charm."
Harry answered, "Since you insist…"
Harry flashed his lord rings in their faces and they realized who they had just offended and began to apologize, but Harry cut them off, "Remember officers, manners. You may be the only face of the Ministry that people ever see."
Harry had to apply Occlumansy to keep from bursting out laughing. The looks on the Auror's faces were just priceless when they realized that they were harassing the Chosen One. Harry didn't really think of himself that way, but he knew that other people did. Maybe after today, they would spread a bit more good will while going about their duties. He wasn't joking about saying hello to the Master Auror for them. Moody was a great fighter, but he needed to teach his men about diplomacy too.
From there, Harry went to Twilfit and Tattings, the clothing shop where the elite of the wizarding world shopped.
The proprietor, Mr. Brown greeted him as he came through the door, "Welcome to Twilfit and Tattings. How can I serve you today?"
Harry let him get a good look at his rings, "I am told that I am expected here today."
The man's countenance lit up immediately, "Of course Lo…"
Harry interrupted him, "I was also told that I may count on your discretion?"
Mr. Brown changed tac immediately, "Of course, sir. Follow me."
The man led Harry through the front part of the shop to private fitting rooms in the back. Harry drew his sandalwood wand and checked the privacy wards. When he was satisfied that there was no way anyone could overhear or see what was going on, he dropped the glamours and said, "Discretion indeed. Well done Mr. Brown."
The man beamed, "We aim to please. How may Twilfit and Tattings serve you today?"
Harry admitted, "I'm a little embarrassed. My house is hosting no less than three weddings. As the lord, I don't know what to wear."
Mr. Brown's smile grew wider if that was possible. He bounced up on his toes saying, "Not to worry, Lord Peverell. The whole wizarding world knows about those upcoming nuptials. As it happens, I have some very specific instructions from a certain Heiress Bones regarding you."
Harry sighed in relief, "Susan! She thinks of everything! Yes, Mr. Brown. Please load me up according to her instructions. I think that will go best for both of us."
The haberdasher rubbed his hands together eagerly, "Yes sir." With that, the man stepped out of the fitting room to return immediately with his assistant in tow. Between the two of them, they were wheeling a rack of robes in some very specific colours. The cuts and materials were quite varied.
AS it turned out, the assistant was one of Fleur's class-mates that had attended the Triwizard Tournament last year. She got a good look at Harry and Said, "Harry? Fleur said that you had changed since last year, but I had no idea."
Harry looked at her and rifled his mind, "Clair? You work here now?"
She smiled and said, "When Monsieur Brown learned that I made the gowns for the Beauxbatons that they wore at the Yule Ball last year, he made me an offer on the spot."
Harry said, "Congratulations. And may I say that your English is excellent!"
She blushed a bit, "Without naming any names, let's just say that some work more at it than others."
While they were talking, Mr. Brown was almost a blur with his tape measure. He went all the way around, then he moved Harry into a different pose and went all the way around again. He repeated this about ten times before he was satisfied. When he was done, he turned to Clair, "It's no good. Help me take the rack out of here."
They started to move the merchandise out when Harry asked, "What's wrong, Mr. Brown?"
He smiled broadly, "Lord Peverell, with many wizards, we can take something pre-made and with a nip here, a tuck there, it will look like it is made for him."
Harry said, "Sure, that's the way my muggle Uncle Vernon used to get all his clothes."
Mr. Brown nodded, "Yes, yes. But for you? You are what we call 'heroically proportioned'. I suppose that is fitting, if you'll pardon the pun. Off-the-rack will not do. Made to measure is the only way to go. Never fear. We'll be right back."
The two of them disappeared through the door with the rack. A minute later, they came back pushing a cart that was loaded up with bolts of fabric. Again, everything was from a very specific colour pallet.
Harry went through all the material on the cart. This involved Mr. Brown holding the material up next to Harry's face while changing the light, Harry looked in the mirrors and Clair gave her opinion of how it looked. Harry eliminated a few more materials because he did not like the way they felt on his skin.
Next they went through the style guides. Of course, Susan had left word about which style she preferred. Harry considered it, then decided to go with it because he knew what the consequences would be if he got a style Susan did not like.
Once they got the robes sorted out, there were accessories. The entire session took about two hours. When they were done, Harry re-applied the glamour charms. He used the mirrors to match his appearance back to what it had been when he entered the shop. They offered to let him pay half of the cost up-front and the balance when he picked up the robes.
Harry asked, "What do you mean, 'When I pick them up.'? I need this for tomorrow."
Mr. Brown answered, "We have to make them, Sir. If we simply conjured them, they would not last very long or wear very well. We will have them ready for tomorrow. There are other orders ahead of yours."
Harry said, "Very well. I will pay the full amount up-front. I will have to send my house-elf to pick them up. Is that acceptable?"
Mr. Brown said, with a smile, "Oh yes. That will be quite acceptable."
Harry left the shop with his money bag considerably lighter. The lack of weight in his pocket turned his thoughts toward Gringotts. He did not have an appointment, but he was sure that his account manager would make some time for him. As he approached the main entrance to the bank, he could see a long queue of people waiting to be admitted. There were Goblin guards to either side of the door and a wizard in the middle. The hold-up was that the wizard was giving each customer a very careful going over with a probity probe before they were admitted to the bank.
Harry had neither the time nor the inclination to wait and deal with the line-up. He walked straight up to one of the Goblin guards and flashed his ring. Without a single word, the guard escorted him to a side entrance that was reserved for Lords and Ministry officials. He spoke a rapid phrase in Gobbledegook and handed Harry off to the guard at the side door. The guard escorted Harry directly to Griphook's office and left him there. Harry rapped on the door smartly and waited.
A moment later, a guard opened the door and asked roughly, "What are you doing here, wizard? Are you lost?"
Harry grinned and showed the guard his ring. The expression on the Goblin's face was worth a whole sack of galleons as Harry said, "No, I am not lost. I'm here to see my account manager."
Two hours later, Harry had concluded his business. When he looked at the time, he realized that he had missed his floo time to return to Black Manor. He knew that Robards would be going spare. The moment he was out of the bank and out of sight, he vanished without a sound.
Bill and Fleur Get Married
The next day was the wedding of Bill and Fleur. In Harry's opinion there was no other couple as beautiful as them. The wedding would not take place until the evening but the entire household spent the day in preparation.
The caterer had been hired from London on the strong recommendation of Mr. O'Neil. This man was a muggle born and a graduate from Hogwarts. Since he could not get a place in Diagon Alley, he operated from Muggle London and he had a vast clientele. Arthur was a regular at "Hestia's Hearth' where O'Neil had introduced him to the caterer.
Arthur in turn, introduced him to Andromeda Tonks. She hired him for the double wedding of Sirius and Remus also. In effect, this was a 3 day engagement for him. He had already been in the manor for a day, going through the place, decorating it as per his plans.
It seemed a bit odd that so many Valentine's Day themed decorations were being used for the Beltane holiday. But, this was a triple celebration of love and life-long bonding. Over all the walkways and paths on the manor grounds were fairy lights, made of real fairies. The general theme of the decorations was Scarlet hearts and gold streamers. All the ladies had participated in a long debate about choosing wedding colours. In the end, Molly had pointed out that all the grooms were from Gryffindor. It was entirely appropriate to use their house colours since no two of the women could agree on anything else.
Not far from the stables, the grounds boasted their own Quidditch pitch. That was where the caterer set up a great white tent to shelter the wedding guests from any potential foul weather. Inside the tent was a butterbeer fountain made of finest crystal. Spaced around it were four cherubs spouting the golden liquid from the tips of their nocked arrows. The head table and dozens of round tables were all draped in gleaming white linen. Each of the round tables could seat eight comfortably or maybe ten if people wanted to squeeze in a little. The centre pieces were made of red and white roses complimented with blue-bells, forget me nots and ferns, each arrangement in crystal vases that seemed to glow from within. The same Scarlet heart and gold bunting theme were draped across the front of the head table and the stage. There was no trace of sod inside the tent either. Underfoot was a floor of white oak as polished and level as any that graced a great hall. More fairy lights would provide a soft glow for dining or dancing after dark. When the dinner was done, the head table would become a buffet for snacks and refreshments. The round tables would be moved to the sides to make room for dancing.
On the morning of Bill and Fleur's wedding, the first guests to arrive were Collin and Dennis Creevey. As Harry greeted them, he saw that they were lugging large shoulder bags.
Collin had a big grin on his face as he said, "Hiya Harry."
Harry asked, "Good to see you, Colin and Dennis. What are you two doing here so early?"
Collin answered, patting his massive shoulder bag, "Lord Weasley hired me to do the photography. Dennis came to help me with lugging equipment and set-up. Someone must have told Andromeda because she too hired us."
Harry said, "That's great. Set up anywhere you want. The tent for the reception is set up on the Quidditch pitch. The Weasleys are staying upstairs in the right wing. The Delacours are on the left. Make sure you get plenty of photos."
As Colin and Dennis went off to find the Weasleys, Harry went off to see to the preparations. The tent had been erected and streamers flew from the walls, golden hued curtains hung around the tent and there was an enormous balloon in the middle of the floor where the dance would start.
The workers were going around, putting up more decorations. Some wizards were adding some touches here and there. A wizarding band sat in the shade of an oak at a distance smoking their pipes. He wondered for a moment about why Mr. Weasley had not hired some famous band like the weird sisters.
A soft pop announced the arrival of Kitty, the house elf that had taken a liking to Susan. She announced, "Mistress be looking for you master".
Harry's heart skipped a beat. In all the very busy business with the preparations he didn't expect Susan to arrive until closer to sunset. He asked, "Kitty, where is your mistress?"
Kitty curtsied answering, "Mistress be in the Lord's study, master." Her job done, she vanished again with a soft pop.
First, Harry thought about apparating directly to the study, but doing that could attract unwanted attention. Anti-apparition wards had been engaged for security reasons. He thought about running, but that would be undignified for the Lord hosting such a grand event. He had to settle for striding purposefully at a near jog. One of the catering assistants tried to get his attention as he went by, but without breaking stride he said, "Ask Lord Weasley", and kept going.
Harry reached the Lord's study where he found Susan seated comfortably in a wing backed chair. As she stood to greet him, he swept her up in his arms embracing her and twirled around in joy.
When he put her back on her feet, he said, "Sue! I'm so glad to see you. How did you manage to sneak out on your Auntie?"
She looked offended as she said, "Sneak? Such things are beneath me."
Harry started to apologize, "Sorry, Sue. It's just that…"
She laughed, "All I had to do was sulk, sigh and whine until she ordered me out of the house."
Harry said , "Really?"
Then Susan sobered a bit, "Honestly Harry, We were supposed to spend the day together, but something came up at the Ministry. She said I could come here if I could find a way to get here. Kitty was able to help me out with that and here I am. Besides, as future lady of the house, I should be here to help."
Harry shrugged, between the caterers and the house elves, it's all been taken care of. I'm really glad you're here. Can you stay for the rest of the holidays?"
Susan gave him another squeeze and said, "Yes I can." Pulling back she said a bit worried, "Auntie is going to be too busy preparing for the final battle to spend any more time with me."
Harry held her by the shoulders saying, "Enough of that for now. Let's make the best of what promises to be the greatest party in the last century. There'll be time enough for other things when the guests have all gone."
With that, it was Harry's day made. Molly had a hair dresser come to the Manor to make everyone look smart. Bill and Charlie had been wearing their hair long since they graduated from Hogwarts. They both swore oaths of vengeance if the hair dresser even thought of cutting it short. But when Molly gave them the Mother's Glare, they both stopped their futile protests. While she was at it, she even made Bill remove his fang earring.
While the Weasley boys were being groomed, Dennis was continually clicking pics and Ginny showed Colin around the manor.
Harry made the mistake of wandering through the room while Charlie's haircut was in progress. Molly said, "Harry dear, don't go anywhere. Your haircut is next."
Susan intervened, "Sorry Mrs. Weasley but I am his personal groomer."
She smiled, "He is in good hands then, I am sure."
About noon, Albus Dumbledore arrived, dressed in white robes that matched his snow white beard, walking with a great staff. He looked like he was dressed to play Gandalf the White in a live production of "The Lord of the Rings". Harry had encountered magic folk who used staves instead of wands during his travels East but he had never seen a British Wizard use one. He wondered if it was only for appearances.
He greeted Dumbledore, "Welcome Headmaster. This is a different look for you."
He chuckled, "Yes, I know. Tradition and all being what it is."
Tradition? This was another thing Harry did not know, "What do you mean?"
He responded, "Lord Weasley has asked if I, as the Chief Warlock, would accept the honour of officiating at the bonding. Any wizard can officiate at a wedding, but he wanted someone steeped in the old traditions to perform the Bonding ceremony."
Harry asked, "How is the bonding different?"
Dumbledore's bright-blue eyes sparkled behind his half-moon spectacles, "You shall see soon enough, my young friend."
About four in the afternoon, Harry remembered to send Dobby to pick up his new clothes. He handed the elf a sack of galleons and told him he could use it if there were any extra charges. Susan had shampooed and cut his hair back to shoulder length. But no matter what she did, it was not going to ever lay down and behave itself. In a final desperate measure, she resorted to some Sleekeazy's Hair Potion and conquered at last. Dobby and Kreacher seized upon Harry and dragged him to the bath. They scrubbed him until his skin was pink and tingly. While Harry relaxed in the foaming warm water, Kreacher cleaned up his cuticles, then shaped and buffed his nails. With a straight razor, Dobby shaved his face clean and shaped his side-burns. Harry climbed out of the tub and toweled off while Dobby cleaned and treated the dragon-hide of Harry's wand holsters. The shoes were new, but Kreacher gave them a going over anyway to make sure they were up to his standards.
About five in the evening, the guests began to arrive in earnest. Charlie was performing his duties as best man while Percy, Fred, George and Ron ushered the guests to their seats in their matching formal robes.
When the elves finally finished all the scrubbing, buffing, polishing and brushing, they declared Harry ready to get dressed. Susan had already told Dobby to lay out the silver iridescent robes for him as they would match what she would be wearing for Bill and Fleur's wedding. Both house elves had long experience dressing for great houses. They helped sort out the bits that even wizards only wore on rare formal occasions. The white shirt with its studs, cummerbund, cufflinks ruffled front and bow-tie, The silk socks with their garters and spats, the dancing shoes with their natural leather souls, the gray trousers with their many fasteners and suspenders, all went together in a few minutes.
Harry observed, "Putting on my armour is less complicated than this!"
When the elves were satisfied that the last fleck of imaginary lint had been removed, they helped Harry don his robes over it all. The final garment settled into place perfectly almost of its own accord, but the elves fiddled and fussed with it until they were satisfied. The last touch was a monogrammed silk handkerchief in the outer left breast pocket.
When Harry got a look at himself in the mirror, he hardly knew who was looking back at him. That tall, well-muscled, impeccably dressed young man with the awesome haircut must be somebody else. He reflected on how far he had come from the skinny, underfed runt with broken glasses, dressed in Dudley's hand-me-downs he had been just a few years ago. Back then, he knew nothing about wizards. Now, all of Wizarding Britain looked to him to put down the most fearsome dark lord in living memory.
Just as he was thinking, "Enough wool gathering. I'd better get downstairs." Kitty popped in, "Mistress be waiting for Master."
He answered her, "Please tell Heiress Bones that I will be right down."
Kitty curtsied and said, "Yes Master." With that, she popped out again.
To Kreacher and Dobby he said, "Brilliant job, both of you. I could not have done it without you." And he meant it.
Harry strode from the room. The clothes were so light and well-fitted that he had to check that they had not vanished. Reassured, he descended the stairs while Susan got a good look at him. The very sight of her intended in all his sartorial splendor simply took her breath away.
When he reached the bottom of the stairs, he did his best to remember everything Rachael had taught him. Susan looked delicious in her iridescent silver robes with her hair shimmering in it's formal up do. What Harry wanted to do was pick her up and snog the living daylights out of her. What he did instead was take her hand, perform precisely the formal bow intended for those of equal social rank and kiss her knuckles. He said, "Heiress Bones, I am enchanted. Would you do me the honour of accompanying me to the wedding?"
The rest of the room seemed to go dim as her brilliant smile lit up Harry's heart. She gave the formal response, "Charmed I'm sure, Lord Peverell. I would be delighted." With that she took Harry's arm and leaned into it a bit saying, "I thought you were never going to come down."
Harry answered, "I am sorry to keep you waiting. You see, I was ambushed by a pair of rabid house elves and I only just managed to escape with my life."
She laughed, "Kreacher and Dobby are to be commended. You cleaned up nicely."
Harry raised an eyebrow, "Thank-you… I think?"
As they were walking past the flower-beds they saw Collin and Dennis there, hard at work, taking photographs of the Weasleys. Molly beckoned to them, "Harry, come and join us for a photo?"
Harry tried to decline, "Perhaps some other time, Lady Weasley? It looks like the photos are just for family right now."
But before Harry could get out of range, Fred and George nabbed him, one by each arm and ushered him into the group.
Gred said, "nonsense Harrikins."
Feorge said, "Of course you'll join us."
Together they said, "You are family!"
Colin took a number of photos before he felt satisfied. Afterwards, it was more photos. Some of the Golden trio, some of Harry and Susan, some with the ladies of the family only. When Collin was satisfied, then and only then did he release Harry to go about his duties.
Sirius seemed to come charging at him out of nowhere. He said, "It's time to get the coach. Pick up the bridal party at the manor house and take them to the stone circle, got it?"
Harry could tell from Sirius' demeanor, that he was already short of time. He looked around and could not spot any of the Weasley brothers. He said, "Would you please escort Susan to the stone circle? I'll get the coach right now."
Susan looked a bit put out but she took Sirius's arm saying, "Lead on, good sir. It seems my champion has abandoned me."
Harry was already rushing off as fast as decorum would allow. He called over his shoulder, "Sorry Susan, duty calls."
When Harry found the team hitched up, he realized that Sirius had already taken care of it. He still took a few minutes to check that everything was in order, adjusting a strap here and there, before he was satisfied. He bowed to the hippogriffs each in turn and greeted them before he scrambled to the driver's seat. With a gentle flip to the reins and a single cluck, he told the hippogriffs to go at a walk.
When he pulled up in front of the manor house, there were audible gasps from some of the bridal party as they took in the sight. When he came to a stop, Dobby and Kreacher seemed to appear out of nowhere to put down the steps and open the coach door. Harry set the brake and jumped down to offer a hand to the ladies as they boarded the coach. Fleur, Her younger sister, Gabrielle who was also her maid of honour, Ginny, Clair, who Harry had met at Twilfit and Tattings and two other beautiful young ladies that Harry had not met before but by their looks, Harry guessed that they must be Fleur's Veela cousins on her mother's side, all boarded the coach in their turn. The only man there was Monsieur Delacour. It was his job to escort the bride down the aisle. He seemed to be in his glory surrounded by no less than six beautiful women. Of course, Collin was there to take pictures. The moment they were all aboard, Collin gathered up his equipment and dashed off toward the stone circle.
Harry mounted the driver's seat again while Dobby and Kreacher secured the steps and the door. When Dobby called out from behind Harry's left ear, "Dobby and Kreacher is aboard, Harry Potter." He drove the coach toward the stone circle as per instructions.
As he drove down what appeared to be nothing more than a packed earth footpath, he noticed that the path always seemed to be wide enough to allow him to pass. Not a single low-hanging branch, rock or tree root hampered his progress at any point. That must have been the last charm on the coach that he could not identify earlier.
Meanwhile back at the stone circle Percy, Fred, George and Ron were busy helping the last of the guests find their seats. It seemed that Moody was the last to arrive looking a bit flustered and out of place in his dress uniform. There was still no sign of Dumbledore, Bill or Charlie. Dennis was there, taking pictures of everything he could aim his camera at. Rude stone benches were neatly aligned to focus on the altar at the center of the stone circle. They looked terribly uncomfortable, but they were charmed to be as comfortable as any puffy sofa. The towering monoliths around the outside made the guests feel small. Fairy lights cast a soft glow over the scene.
Then a bunch of things happened in rapid succession. Collin arrived out of breath and said, "The bridal party is coming!"
There was a brilliant flash of light right near the altar as Dumbledore, Bill and Charlie appeared with Fawkes, Dumbledore's phoenix, over their heads. Collin and Dennis swung their cameras around fast as thought and clicked off more photos.
Then, at the edge of the circle, Tonks pointed out the coach-lamps coming down the path, "Here they come."
Bill and Dumbledore found their places by the altar while Charlie along with Fred, George, Percy and Ron, all lined up to receive the bridal party. Harry set the brake and went to find his seat on the Groom's side of the gathering. In turn, Ron escorted Ginny, Fred and George escorted the Veela cousins, Percy with Clair and Charlie with Gabrielle. At the end of the procession, Monsieur Delacour escorted his stunning daughter down the aisle. As they approached the altar, the men split off to the right while the women split off to the left. At last, Fleur and her father remained.
Albus intoned, "who gives this bride?"
With a definite catch in his voice, her father answered, "I do." He handed his daughter over to Bill, who took her tenderly by the arm while Monsieur Delacour took his seat beside his wife in the front row. On the other side, Harry had walked around the outside of the gathering and found his seat beside Susan.
So far, this was much like any high society muggle wedding. Some traditions are older than the division between the muggle world and the wizarding world. That is unless you take into account the setting. The ancient stone circle welcomed Harry like an old friend. He felt something similar and as powerful at Hogwarts and Taxilla but this was more personal, more familiar. As he stretched out his senses, he realized that as a Black and particularly as Lord Black, this place would strengthen him and protect him. This was the true seat of power of the House of Black, regardless of the vast fortune or political power they may have.
The dresses on the bride's maids were of a green, shimmering silk with matching pumps. Fleur had chosen the colour to represent fertility and prosperity. Clair had designed the gowns. They were spaghetti-strap, knee-length, tight in the bodice, full in the skirt with sweet-heart necklines. The colour looked good on all the bride's maids but looked positively stunning with Ginny's red hair. Topping off their outfits were red orchid wrist corsages. Fleur's dress was a similar cut but the skirt was floor-length and the fabric kept changing between an iridescent white and a sky blue that matched her eyes. Her lace veil covered her radiant features, but did not totally obscure them. She wore her hair down so that the gleaming cascade reached all the way down to her slender waist. Unlike many brides, she did not make the mistake of trying to do something outrageous with her hair on the most important day of her life. Besides, the hair was a clear and present reminder that she had a Veela grandmother who's hair was in the core of her wand. Even though it had no effect on him, Harry could tell from the expressions on the faces of other men in the gathering that she was spreading some of her Veela charm about. The other girls all wore their hair in elegant updos, not too different from the way Susan was wearing her own. The bridal bouquet consisted of red, white and green roses, baby's breath and mauve snap-dragons. All five of Bill's younger brothers were dressed in the scarlet and gold of Gryffindor. Of course, a set of Quidditch team robes didn't look anything like this. Harry could plainly see that all six of them had endured a similar ritual to what he had experienced at the hands of his elves. Yes, Bill and Charlie had their hair cut, but it was only to remove split ends. They still looked cool with their hair out of their customary pony-tails, trimmed and brushed out. Bill's earring had been replaced with a ruby stud for the wedding. They were all wearing carnation boutonnieres. Bill's was white while his brothers all had red. Bill's robes, although the exact same cut as all of his brothers, were the same iridescent shifting between white and sky blue as Fleur was wearing, trimmed in Gryffindor red which was the same as Weasley red. This was a reminder that the Weasleys were descendants of Godric Gryffindor.
Together, Bill and Fleur turned to face Dumbledore.
Dumbledore smiled, "Is everyone here?" Since there were no free seats, it was safe to assume that everybody was there that was going to be there. Satisfied Dumbledore continued, "The bonding ritual goes back as far as any written records. It is at least as old as civilization. Bonding is not simply a civil ceremony or a legal obligation. It goes much deeper than that. A bonding that is solemnized by Mother Magic herself makes two souls into one. Today Bill and Fleur will make an unbreakable vow to bear one-another's burdens, to be faithful to one another, to honour and love one another so long as they both shall live and if Mother Magic finds them both worthy, in the next great adventure.".
He addressed Bill and Fleur, "Do you both understand all of this?"
Bill and Fleur both nodded their heads firmly and answered, "Yes", together.
Dumbledore said, "Very well. We shall proceed." He asked, "Who speaks for Heir William Arthur Weasley?"
Arthur stood from his seat directly behind Bill and said, "I, Arthur Septimus Weasley, father of the groom and Lord of House Weasley, speak for him."
Dumbledore asked, "Do you, lord Weasley, give your son and heir, Heir William Arthur Weasley, in Bonding to Miss Fleur Delacour?"
Arthur said, "I do.", and took his seat.
Dumbledore next asked, "Who speaks for Miss Fleur Delacour."
A teary eyed Monsieur Delacour stood from his seat behind his daughter, "I, Sebastian Jean Delacour, Father of the Bride, speak for mademoiselle Fleur Delacour."
Dumbledore noted the correction. He asked, "Do you, Monsieur Delacour, give your daughter, mademoiselle Fleur Delacour in Bonding to Heir William Arthur Weasley?"
Monsieur Delacour dabbed at his eyes with his handkerchief before answering unsteadily, "Oui. I do" and took his seat.
With a flourish, Dumbledor produced a length of gold ribbon from the recesses of his robes. Holding it up he said, "Please take each other by the right hand."
When they did so, he tied the ribbon around their right wrists. Next he took up the staff and spoke, "Today, in the presence of these witnesses and Mother Magic, William Arthur Weasley and Fleur Delacour vow that from this time forth, they two shall become one. One in purpose, one in faithfulness, one in power, one in joy, one in sorrow, one in health, one in sickness, one in love. Do you, William Arthur Weasley, give yourself to Fleur Delacour in Bonding?"
Bill responded, "I do."
To Fleur he asked, "Do you, Fleur Delacour, give yourself to William Arthur Weasley in Bonding?"
Fleur looked into Bill's Eyes and answered firmly, "I do."
Dumbledore then raised his staff and intoned, "As you have both made the vow, by the authority invested in me as Chief Warlock, I pronounce you Bonded. May Mother Magic bless your union with love, peace, prosperity, joy and progeny. May you seek the gifts of wisdom and service all the days of your life. So mote it be!" With that, he thumped the heel of the staff against the stone floor. A golden shaft shot from the head of the staff, striking the gold ribbon. The ribbon glowed brightly for a few seconds then dissolved into their hands and wrists. Everyone in the circle felt a surge of power. Mother Magic had given her blessing on the union. Bill lifted Fleur's veil and kissed her tenderly. Charlie and Gabrielle produced the rings. Taking the rings, Bill and Fleur placed the rings on each other's fingers.
Dumbledore spoke a few words more, "I present to you Heir William Arthur Weasley and his spouse, Lady Fleur Weasley. These two today have become one in our presence. Bonding, unlike marriage, is an unbreakable vow. Today, blessed by Mother Magic, they have vowed to love and sustain each other so long as they both shall live. William is a descendant of Godric Gryffindor. Fleur is a descendant of magic folk older than any of our houses. Let their bonding across different cultures be an example to us of tearing down walls and building bridges. May every one of us find a message of hope, love and peace in their example."
The Delacours were holding each other, weeping helplessly into their handkerchiefs. So was Molly Weasley. Arthur was also showing a tear or two but he looked proud enough to burst. There was a shower of gold sparks as first one, then another then more and more wizards and witches drew their wands and joined in. The fairies retreated as the entire circle was bathed in the golden light. Harry left hosting duties up to Sirius as he strode around the outside of the circle toward the coach. The entire wedding party paired up and walked to the coach. Dobby and Kreacher already had the steps down and the door open when Harry got there. All the guests remained standing, emitting the shower of golden sparks until the entire wedding party was aboard. Bill and Fleur first, followed by Charlie and Gabrielle and the rest of the bride's maids and ushers in their turn. Harry could not believe it but there was still room inside for the Delacours and the Weasleys too. Once everyone was aboard, the elves secured the door and the steps and climbed up to the luggage rack behind Harry in the driver's seat. He gave a flick of the reins and a click of his tongue but the hippogriffs did not budge. The one on his left twisted her head around giving a significant look at the brake lever to Harry's left.
Harry turned a bit pink around the ears and said, "Sorry." He released the lever and gave the command to go again. When the carriage was clear of the stone circle, Sirius gave instructions to the rest of the guests to go to the great tent on the Quidditch pitch.
Once the carriage was parked outside of the tent, Harry secured the brake and jumped down. Fast as he was, the elves were faster. It was hard to believe that anyone that looked as old and wrinkled as Kreacher could move that fast, but it seemed that he truly enjoyed his work. The Creevey brothers arrived at a run almost before Harry could finish climbing down.
Harry tried to keep from laughing out loud as the wedding party exited the coach. It was like one of those muggle clown cars. You would never believe how many people managed to fit in there. The caterer met them and showed them where to set up the reception line.
By the time Harry climbed back up to the driver's seat, the guests were already emerging from the forest, led by the unmistakable figure of Albus Dumbledore in his white ceremonial robes, staff in hand. Harry waited just long enough to hear the Headmaster say, "I wanted to be the first to congratulate the bride and groom."
Even with the elves helping him, it took Harry a good ten minutes to take care of the hippogriffs and the carriage and get back to the main tent. By that time, there was a long queue of guests waiting to go through the reception line and he was at the back of it.
Sirius came sweeping by and spotted him there, "Pup, what are you doing out here?"
Harry shrugged and said, "Waiting my turn. Why do you ask?"
He snorted, "You have better things to do than stand in line. Susan has gone spare looking for you." With that, he took Harry by the arm and guided him to the front of the line. He gave a guest a tap on the shoulder asking, "Excuse me. Sorry for butting in. Do you mind if Lord Peverell goes ahead of you?"
No less a person than General Frank Longbottom, the Minister of Magic turned and answered, "Don't mind if you do, Harry. Young Heiress Bones has been looking for you. I would rather face a whole room full of dark lords than her when she's upset."
Harry pulled both the Longbottoms into a hug saying, "I'm so glad that you were able to come!"
People behind him started to complain that he was holding up the line. Harry thanked them for letting him into the line and started making his way down the reception line.
As soon as Harry appeared inside the tent, Susan spotted him. She made all the introductions as Harry passed down the reception line. When it came to Clare he told her, "Please tell Mr. Brown that the robes are great!"
When Harry got to Gabrielle and Fleur, they made a big fuss over him. , Fleur said with a mischievous grin, "But he is not a leetle boy anymore."
Harry observed, "Gabrielle is growing up as beautiful and graceful as her sister too."
She hugged him for that.
Fred and George tried to palm off dungbombs on him but Harry just vanished them and shook their hands anyway. Behind the bride and groom was a large long table that was positively groaning under the weight of the gifts that everyone had brought. The wrappings and ribbons were an absolute riot of colour.
When everyone was seated, Arthur stood up to address the gathering, "Thank you everyone for coming to the bonding of William Arthur Weasley and Fleur Delacour. They have been bonded in the ritual with Mother Magic as witness and officiated by Chief Warlock Dumbledore.".
As he sat, the balloon overhead burst apart, raining confetti and fairies came out of the balloons and started hovering around. As if on cue, fireworks exploded in the sky, their red, green and blue sparks spelling out, "Congratulations! Bill and Fleur forever!"
With that, the feast commenced. Invisible servants brought the dishes on covered silver platters. The guests were seated eight to a table for the most part. Harry was sitting with Susan, Neville, Hannah, Hermione, Collin, Dennis, and Penelope Clearwater. As the dinner conversation went on, they learned that Penelope, or Penny as she preferred, had been dating Percy since their fifth year at Hogwarts. When they graduated, they went on to get positions at the Ministry together. Harry had heard about it from Fred and George, of course, they never missed a chance to torment Percy about it. Now that Harry got to know her, Penny was bright, ambitious, hard-working and a really good match for Percy.
Sirius, Emmeline, Remus, Tonks, and what Harry guessed were some of Bill's co-workers filled another table. Not far away, Frank and Alice shared a table with Albus, Bathsheda Babbling, and a few Aurors that might have been Bill's class-mates during his school days. There was even a table with shorter legs and goblins sitting around it. Harry recognized no less a person than Ragnok. Griphook was there too. Goblins didn't usually attend wizard celebrations. Harry assumed that these goblins had become Bill's friends while he was working at Gringotts.
The feast progressed until people were ready for dessert. That's when Charlie rose to his feet, clanking his spoon against his glass to draw everybody's attention. All at once, every champagne flute in the room seemed to fill itself. As everyone turned to face the best man, Harry saw Luna sitting at another table next to a man in sunflower yellow robes. A number of Harry's school friends, members of The Order of the Snow Leopard were sitting with them.
Charlie kicked off the toasts by toasting the maid of honour. Gabrielle responded by toasting the groomsmen. It went back and forth for a while until Monsieur Delacour toasted the groom and Lord Arthur Weasley toasted the bride. The final toast was Bill toasting everyone present.
When Bill was done, there was not a dry eye in the entire tent. Finally, Fleur rose from her seat to say, "Alor! Enough of the toasting and the drinking. You are all invited to dance at our wedding!"
Bill offered his arm for Fleur to take and the guests all stood as the tables slid themselves to the sides of the tent. By the time Bill and Fleur reached the middle of the dance floor, the wedding party in their pairs were all lined up in front of the head table. Bill bowed while fleur curtsied and the band played the intro to a slow waltz. The couple danced gracefully while everyone there looked on for a minute or so. Then the Delacours and the Weasleys joined in. A minute later, the rest of the wedding party took to the floor. They all revolved gracefully in a circle around the newlyweds. Even Fred and George refrained from spoiling the moment. It seemed that Ron's dancing lesson with Hermione paid off because he didn't step on Ginny's foot even once.
When the dance was finished, the wedding party turned to bow and curtsy to the rest of the guests while everyone applauded in return.
With all the formal requirements fulfilled and the first dance done, Percy and Claire split off to find their dates. Ginny found Collin and Ron found Hermione. Fred and George seemed to be content to stay with the Veela cousins and Charlie stayed with Gabrielle.
As Ron came by the group to pick up Hermione, he turned to Harry and said, "Hermione is a brilliant dance instructor. Thanks for the suggestion, Harry." To Hermione he said, "May I have this dance, Miss Granger?"
Hermione responded, "I would be delighted. But I warn you, handsome young man, that when my boyfriend, Ron, arrives, that my dance card is full."
Before Harry could ask Susan to dance, Luna came drifting over with the man in the sunflower-yellow robes in tow. She said, "Harry, I'd like to introduce you to my Father, Xenophillius Lovegood."
Now that the man was closer, Harry could see that one of his eyes was askew, giving him the look of a mad-man. He also seemed to share Luna's taste in accessories as his studs and cufflinks appeared to be made from tiny mushrooms. One odd thing that Harry noticed was that the man was wearing the Peverell family crest suspended by a silver chain around his neck. Harry reached out and shook the man's hand firmly saying, "It's good to meet you Mr. Lovegood. Father of Luna is a friend of mine."
The man answered saying, "I wanted to thank you for putting a stop to the bullying and being Luna's friend."
With some feeling, Harry answered, "It was the least a decent person could do. And Luna is delightful."
Then Xenophillius pointed at the Peverell family crest on Harry's left side and asked, "Are you a True seeker?"
Harry, misunderstanding the question answered, "Yes, I've been the Seeker for Gryffindor since my first year at Hogwarts. I'm sure Luna has told you all about that."
He shook his head, "Of course she did, but I mean a seeker of the Deathly Hollows."
Then Harry saw where the man was pointing and said, "I was going to ask you why you are wearing the Peverell family crest around your neck."
Looking surprised, the man said, "I suspect there's a reason Luna wanted the two of us to talk. Perhaps this is not the time?"
Susan was showing remarkable restraint, but Harry knew that it was time to dance. The floor was full of other guests doing just that. He said, "Yes. We can talk later." He turned to Susan, "Shall we dance?"
As the evening pressed on, Harry danced with as many of the ladies as he could. Susan was making the rounds too, but she had to sit out for a few.
While Harry was taking a break with Susan to cool down, Viktor approached him. The world famous seeker still had the characteristic heavy eyebrows creased by years of scowling, but he also had a smile that reflected in his eyes. He now stood up straight and tall and walked confidently with both his feet pointing forward. In his formal attire, the man looked both formidable and dashing. Apparently, playing professional Quidditch agreed with him. He asked, "Potter, vot is the plan?"
"I take it that your people are here, Viktor?"
He nodded, "Madam Alexandrov sent her men on the ship that brought us here for the tournament. She herself will arrive when it is time to fight. Wot is the plan?"
"Soon we will lure Tom out with his forces. Things are already in place and within a few days, we will be close to attaining our objective."
As Harry joined his circle of friend on a table for a round of drinks, he realized that Michael and Lisa had not come. Before he could ask, Daphne asked him for a dance. While he was dancing with Daphne, he asked, "Have you seen Lisa or Michael at all tonight?"
She answered, "No, I haven't. Maybe Padma or Mandy might know something?"
Harry filed that for later. He observed another curious thing, "It looks like Tori has her wish."
Daphne looked to see her younger sister dancing with Ernie and said, "It looks that way doesn't it. He seems to be better, though."
Harry said with a grin, "Sometimes, a Little Trouble can shake you out of your funk."
As the song changed, Harry caught up with Mandy and asked, "Have you heard from Michael or Lisa?"
Mandy said, "Michael sent me a message that he might be going to France with his parents for the holiday. Lisa told me that she'd be coming to the double wedding tomorrow."
At one point, the band struck up a tune with a fast beat that was heavy on the percussion. The guys all took to the dance floor and started break-dancing. By the time the number was done, only Harry and Viktor remained, spinning on their heads in the middle of the floor. For a finale they pressed up to a handstand and flipped back onto their feet. They got a standing ovation while Harry and Viktor gave each-other a high-five.
Still breathing hard from the exertion, Harry looked at his watch and realized that it was already 11:00 PM. He gave Sirius a nudge, "I can't believe it, but it's already eleven o'clock! Sorry, but we're going to have to break up this party."
With that, Sirius strode over to the band and the band put their instruments down. He addressed the guests, "Sorry, folks. We have to end the dance party. This will be the last dance. For those of you who wish to stay overnight, there are accommodations for you in the manor house. We'll all get together tomorrow and do this all over again. Thank-you so much for coming."
Guests went their ways to their accommodations. A separate small tent had been set at a distance with a comfortable bed for Hagrid who had been dancing with Madame Maxime all evening.
You will tell me everything.
Michael Corner and Lisa Turpin were out of school for the Beltane holidays. Both of them made the decision to spend the holidays with their families before going off to the final battle. Nobody liked to talk about it, but the possibility existed that they may not survive. The training with Harry and the other members of The Order of the Snow Leopard was better than anything the Aurors got under Fudge, but there are no guarantees in war.
For his part, Michael was planning to visit France with his father. Michael's father had married a muggle. Everything went well between them until strange things started to happen around their son when he was emotional. Michael was too young to really remember it but their marriage started falling apart as her jealousy over her son's growing power became something that she just could not see past. She left them when Michael was only two years old. The Obliviators removed her entire memory of her husband and son ever being magical and left in their place a plane crash. Sadly, that seemed to be easier for her to deal with emotionally than having given birth to a wizard. Since then, his father had raised him by himself.
Michael was a quiet boy that was curious and studied anything that caught his interest until he understood it. That made him an ideal candidate for Ravenclaw when it came to the Sorting Hat. Ravenclaw was where he met Lisa. The two took an instant liking to each other. As they grew older, that friendship was blossoming into something more.
Michael was home by himself, working his way through his homework that the teachers had set. He kept getting distracted by thoughts that this may be the last time he ever saw his home.
In the quiet, he heard someone moving outside his front door. His wand was out quicker than a blink. He knew that his father had set the alarm, a magically enhanced muggle system, before he left for work for the day. Nobody, not even a cat should have been able to approach the front door without him hearing about it. Whoever it was, they were not friends. Being under-aged, he had the trace on him. What he did next was certainly going to attract attention from the Ministry, but he hoped that would bring help too. In rapid succession, he cast a disillusionment spell on himself and a Homenum revelio to detect the intruders and carefully slipped out of his chair so as not to scrape the feet across the floor. The second spell told him that there were two intruders outside the front door and another one at the back door.
As he watched, the doorknob turned slowly until the lock stopped it. Then there was a click and the doorknob turned the rest of the way. By the time the door began to swing open, he was in position. The piercing hex struck the first death eater right through the heart. The man gave out a gasp and died with a surprised look on his face. Using the spell dispelled his disillusionment and he found himself face to face with none other than Augustus Rookwood. He dodged the first Bombarda that came at him and cast a shield, just as he had been taught.
Rookwood sneered and shot a shield-breaker, Stunner combination back.
Michael dodged but the shield breaker clipped his shield and took it down again. He replied with a stinger, Stunner, Bombarda combination.
The stinger, being a very fast spell, clipped the death eater but he got a shield up to stop the other spells. Seeing that Michael had not raised his shield again, he tried to end the duel quickly with a wide-area stunner. Michael raised his shield in time to deflect it, but a stunner got him from behind and he toppled to the floor unconscious.
5 minutes later, Senior Auror Savage leading a team of 5 Aurors knocked on the door of the residence. There was no sign of a dead death eater outside the front door. Michael answered the door shortly afterwards.
The senior Auror introduced himself, "Good afternoon, Mr. Corner. I am Senior Auror Savage from the ministry of magic".
Michael asked, "Yes Mr. Savage, how may I help you?"
"Mr. Corner, the office of detection of underage magic picked up some signals from this place which are a an unlocking charm, a disillusionment charm, a Homenum revelio, a piercing hex, couple bombarda a couple shields, a stinger, a couple stunners and a wide area stunner. We have come to make sure that everything is alright."
Michael lied straight faced, "No problem here, Mr. Savage. My father was just showing me what to do if any death eaters show up."
Savage pointed to three of his men, "You lot go inside and sweep the place. It shouldn't take more than a minute."
The trio swept past Michael and checked the house. While they were at it, Savage asked, "Where is your father now?"
Michael answered, "He's back at work." Then he added, "You just missed him."
When the three that went inside were satisfied, they returned to the front door and reported, "Seems like everything is fine here, Savage."
As the Aurors left the house, Savage said, "OK, young man. You can get back to your homework now. And lock your door."
Michael answered, "I'll do that. Thank you Mr. Savage."
As soon as the Aurors were gone, Michael closed and locked the front door. He left his homework on the table, walked through the house, and out the back door. When he had the door locked, Augustus Rookwood took him by the arm and they disapparated together.
Lisa Turpin was a half blood who lived with her parents. Her mother was a witch and they lived somewhere in Muggle London. That morning Lisa had gone to the park to take in some fresh air and sunshine. Even though she was still underaged and this was a muggle neighbourhood, she had her wand with her and kept her wits about her. There was a turning in the path where the trees blocked the view from every direction. She was too busy taking in the wild flowers and bird song to notice the distortions in the light around the trees. A single stunner took her from behind and she toppled to the cobblestone pathway. The one masked death eater that had just become visible took her over his shoulder and disapparated. His two companions who were still disillusioned quickly followed suit.
The place where they arrived was a house that looked ordinary enough. Besides Rookwood and the three that had taken Lisa, Wagner was there. They dumped Lisa into a chair next to Michael. It was the work of less than two minutes to revive Lisa and put her under the imperious curse too.
Wagner asked Rookwood, "Are you sure they are imperioused?"
Rookwood answered, yes. They will tell you anything you want to know now."
There had been a discussion beforehand. The Cruciatus curse had been considered, but torture was time consuming. If the children got stubborn, they might go mad before divulging their secrets. They considered Veritaserum, but Snape was no longer among them and they didn't have any. But, a carefully worded command to someone under the Imperious Curse could be just as effective.
Very well, Wagner said, "I hope this won't take very long. I don't want them to be missed."
He turned to Michael and said, "You will answer my questions as completely as you can."
To Michael, that seemed like the best idea in all the world. He said, "Yes. I'll do that."
Wagner said, "Tell me who has been training you."
Michael answered, "I can't tell you that."
Wagner raised an eyebrow, "And why is that?"
Michael answered, "I really don't know. I want to tell you, but I can't ."
Michael did not possess super-human ability to resist the Imperius curse. The charms that Harry had worked into the parchment that all the members of The Order of the Snow Leopard had signed prevented them from talking about it. If they tried, the information was just forgotten as they tried to speak.
Wagner tried Lisa, "Is it a teacher that's been training you?"
Without any specifics, Lisa answered honestly, but not helpfully, "Many teachers have been training me. I am a student at Hogwarts."
Wagner asked her again, "Who has been teaching students to duel like hit wizards?"
Lisa said, "Our defense Against the Dark Arts Teacher, Vikram Rana is very good."
Wagner already had reports about this DADA teacher, but the children of death eaters who had been to the castle did not demonstrate the level of skill that Michael had. He tried again, "Is anyone else training you to fight like that?"
She answered, "I can't say."
He consulted with Rookwood, "Is there any way they could be resisting?"
Rookwood shook his head firmly, "I don't think so. Even if they had made unbreakable vows, they would tell us what they know and die. There's something else going on here."
Wagner just had to accept that he wasn't going to get the identity out of them. Judging by the reports he had from the battlefield, Peverell or possibly Longbottom had the skill, but so did Flitwick, McGonagall or Dumbledore for that matter. Then there was the Master Auror, but he must be far too busy with his duties at the Ministry to bother training a bunch of children. No matter, they were getting training and obviously it was at school.
He questioned Michael again, "What do you know about the catapults at the school?"
Michael spoke slowly. Suddenly answering all of this guy's questions didn't seem like such a good idea, but he still wanted to, "They are well balanced machines, easy to aim and operate."
He continued, "Where are they located?"
Michael shook his head, "I cannot say."
Wagner asked, "Can they fire magical rounds?"
Michael said, "I don't know." During all the practice sessions he only ever saw or used boulders.
Wagner asked, "what ammunition do the catapults use?".
Michael answered, "I have only ever used boulders."
Wagner scratched his head, "What good are boulders?"
Michael said, "Giants are vulnerable to boulder strikes."
Rookwood and Wagner exchanged a look, "You never listed giants with our assets."
Rookwood answered weakly, "Sorry, it never came up."
Wagner asked Michael, "Where are these catapults able to fire?"
Michael stopped for a moment before he said, "I cannot say."
Wagner asked again, "And why can't you tell me?"
Michael answered easily enough, "That is not my secret to tell."
Rookwood suggested, "A Fidelius Charm? That is a pretty advanced bit of magic. Try asking who the secret keeper is."
Wagner turned back to Michael, "Who is the secret keeper?"
Michael answered with some difficulty, "I cannot say."
Wagner asked Lisa this time, "Tell me about the spells you have learned over the last year."
Lisa listed everything from The Standard Book of Spells Level 5. At no point did she mention anything about piercing spells, Patronus Charms, Bombarda or spell chains.
He asked Michael the same question and got the same result.
When he asked Michael about where he learned the piercing spell, Michael just said that he could not say again.
Wagner went on to ask them about numbers, plans, unit deployments, anything. But they told him nothing more.
Wagner turned to Rookwood again, "We're not going to get anything more out of these two. Return them to their homes. Lift the imperious curses and leave not a trace of us or anything that happened to them this afternoon in their homes, on them or in their minds. As far as anyone is concerned, they have been snogging all afternoon. Understood?"
Rookwood asked, "Why not just kill them? That would be simpler."
Wagner shook his head and explained shortly, "Dumkoff! We don't want anyone to even suspect that these two have been compromised. Whoever has been training them is someone we do not want to alert. Though I will be sure to mention your suggestion to The Dark Lord when I see him next."
Rookwood realized that whatever the German was saying made sense. Also, he didn't want to face the ire of the Dark Lord for having ruined his plans or for having interfered with the German. Of course, the students were returned to their homes safely.
Breach in a plan
As the guests found their way out of the main tent, Moody pulled Harry aside, "Lad, have you got a minute?"
Harry had gotten to know the Master Auror fairly well over the last year. Moody never just wanted to chat and he looked worried. Harry answered, "I will always make time for you, Master Auror. What is the matter?"
Moody showed him a report, "This afternoon, a team of Aurors was sent to the home of one Michael Corner who, I believe, is in his 5th year at Hogwarts."
Harry looked at the report quickly. When he came to the list of spells that were detected and matched it with his training, he immediately understood that Michael had been in a fight for his life. He looked at moody, "Michael is my friend and one of my unit specialists. There's nothing here about him being hurt or finding a body. It's all very strange. No mention of death eaters. He wouldn't have used those spells against anyone else."
Moody glared at Harry with both eyes, "Piercing is an Auror grade spell. That's why I came to talk to you about it."
Harry answered the unasked question, "Order of the Snow Leopard are trained to use it and many more besides. It says here that his father showed it to him? Has anyone checked to see if his father was at work when Michael claims he was showing him this stuff?"
Moody shook his head, "Looks like they didn't think an incident of under-aged wizardry was worth the trouble. Since then, they were both seen, leaving for France from the Port-key terminal. Their visa said that they won't be back until the end of holidays."
"Alright", Harry nodded, "Maybe someone can follow up with one of Mr. Corner's co-workers."
Moody said, "I can do that."
With some urgency Harry said, "Find them at home. If Michael's story doesn't check out, we need to track down the Corners, the sooner the better. I really don't like the way this smells."
Moody said, "It's near midnight. I'll put Robards and his team on it first thing in the morning. If a trip to France is what we need, Monsieur La Pierre, their head of Aurors has promised his full cooperation."
Harry asked, "This report is fishy on the face of it. Why didn't Savage follow up better?"
Moody said, "Everything is compartmentalized. Savage didn't need to know. But still, even a rookie should have known better. He will be reprimanded."
Harry said, "How you deal with Savage is not my concern. I'm sure you know best. Please let me know when you get a report on Michael."
"I will lad", said Alastor.
As Alastor was about to go, Harry asked, "Shouldn't there have been a warning issued to Corner for under-age magic anyway?"
"Well, there would have been but it was not done for obvious reasons. You know how the trace works. We found magic cast and he claimed that his father had cast it. Since we can't determine who did cast it in a wizarding house, we have to rely on parents to keep their children in line."
"This needs to change", Harry said resolutely.
Moody grinned, "of course. You can change it when you are on your seat in the Wizengamot."
Beltane and Dual weddings
Just before dawn, many of the young ladies who were staying at Black manor rose early to gather the morning dew while it lay heavy on every surface. A potion master also rose early to dip the first water of the morning from the well and bottle it for some particularly tricky potions. The windows of the manor and the tents were decked with sprigs of holly and rowan. Decorated bushes of Holly were dotted here and there about the grounds and in the main tent. Just beyond the Quidditch pitch, on the hillside were two enormous fire-pits, stocked with generous piles of oak and ash. The preparations for Beltane were ready.
Later that same morning, as bleary eyed guests made their way out of bed, they were told that breakfast, more like brunch, would be served in the main tent at ten. The bonding Ceremonies for Misters Black and Lupin would be held in the Stone Circle promptly at one. It was their wish that everyone had a chance to dance and feast before the Beltane celebration began at dusk. Beltane, the traditional first day of summer, was even more important than Ule for Wizarding Britain.
When Harry woke up to a kiss from a certain strawberry blond, it made his whole day. She started to pull away again, but he dragged her into bed with him to give her a proper snogging.
Susan pushed away saying, "Harry! This is not the right time. You need to get up now."
Harry gave her his best lop-sided grin, "I'm sure the world won't end if we take five minutes to say 'Good morning' to each other."
From very close by Sirius said, "Shall I go away and close the door while you do that, Pup?"
Harry jumped out of bed saying, "When did you come in?"
Sirius grinned, "I was here before Susie. I was about to douse you with a jet of ice-cold water when she came along. They're serving brunch in the main tent and I'm getting married in three hours. So get a move on."
Susan and Harry went down to brunch together. There was no formal seating chart so they decided to sit with the Weasleys. They had pushed two of the round tables close together to accommodate them all. Hermione, Sirius, Remus, Ted and Andromeda joined them. When Harry looked around, he noticed that Bill and Fleur were missing. He also didn't see the Delacours, Tonks or Emmeline anywhere. He asked Andromeda, "Aunt Andy, Where's Tonks?"
She answered, "With only three hours to go until Nymphadora 's wedding, you need to ask?"
Harry shrugged. That answered his question about Emmeline too. He asked Charlie, "Will the Delacours be joining us for brunch?"
Charlie said, "Gabrielle told me that they would be heading back to France as soon as the Beltane celebration is over. They're sleeping in this morning."
Nobody had made a remark about the newlyweds being absent so Harry just had to ask, "Does anyone know where Bill and Fleur might be?"
A few people dropped their forks. Fred and George only managed to suppress gales of laughter through supreme effort. But it was Susan, a bit pink around the ears, who tried to explain it, "Harry. They just got married last night. Don't expect to see them today."
Harry started to ask another question but something finally dawned on him and he gave it up for a bad job.
After breakfast, Harry's elves seized upon him, "Master be coming with us."
Harry protested, "But there's hours to go before the wedding."
"Yes", said Dobby, "Only two. Dobby and Kreacher may have to cut some corners."
Harry rolled his eyes, "Fine. Let's go." He was not looking forward to a repeat of yesterday's treatment. His skin was still feeling raw in places.
He didn't require the deep scouring again but after the dancing last night, he needed a shower to freshen up. Kreacher came at him with a curling iron but Harry swore that he'd shave himself bald before he let anyone curl his hair. Kreacher had to content himself with another application of Sleekeazy's Hair Potion and brushing the hair out. Dobby freshened up Harry's shave.
When the elves were content that Harry was sufficiently clean, they helped him dress. The pieces of the outfit were much like last evening but this time, the robe was a neon blue with a gray over-cloak. When he stood in front of the three-way mirrors, his reflection remarked, "Looking good, if I do say so myself."
He managed to keep the elves to just one hour this time. He descended the steps and waited for his intended to join him.
He spotted Susan as she glided toward him, a vision in shimmering iridescent robes. He guessed from the shifting colours that the robes themselves were simply refracting all available light, much the same as a white diamond. The fit did everything to flatter and emphasize her fabulous figure. When she reached him, she gently placed a finger under his chin and closed his mouth. With an impish grin she asked, "What do you think?"
Harry gathered his wits enough to kiss her knuckles and say, "My dear, your beauty has left me bereft of my senses. You look stunning!"
She swept the back of her gloved arm across her brow and lamented, "Damned by faint praise." Then she tittered and remarked, "You look marvelous yourself, my love."
With that, Harry swept her up to give her a proper kiss.
"Ahem, will you both save these niceties for later", said Amelia who had just arrived.
Susan stepped away from Harry very quickly, "Auntie, when did you arrive?"
"Just as you were professing your love for him, Susie", said Amelia.
The more observant ones could see a tear-drop in her eye and the wavering in her voice as she spoke, "I am very glad that Edward and James wrote that contract when they did."
"Pup go and receive your guests now. Return here in about 30 minutes to drive the coach again", said Sirius, putting emphasis on guests.
Harry understood the allusion and walked out. Susan tried to come with him but Sirius said, "Susie, I need your help today. Emmeline wants someone to stand with her today and I suggested you. Will you do it?"
Half an hour later, the guests were all seated at the Stone Circle. Harry stood by the carriage in front of the manor with Dobby and Kreacher to help the bridal parties to board. Of course, Collin was there to take more photos. Dennis was already at the Stone Circle taking photos of the other guests.
Ted boarded with his daughter Tonks followed by Hermione who was acting as her maid of honour today. Then Stephen Vance boarded with his daughter Emmeline and Susan, acting as her maid of honour. Once everyone was seated, Harry climbed up to the driver's seat while the elves secured the steps and the door. The carriage ride went much as it had the previous evening, but the afternoon sun showed a side of the forest that the darkness hid. There were song birds and blossoming spring flowers everywhere. The dappled sunlight brought out different colours in the wood of the carriage. It was easier to see how the very rocks and trees stretched to get out of the way as the carriage drove by.
When the carriage arrived at the Stone Circle, Dumbledore was already waiting there with Remus and Sirius. They came to the carriage to escort Hermione and Susan to the altar, Emmeline and her father, Stephen followed behind. Last and not least, Ted escorted his daughter Nymphadora. As Sirius was to be bonded first, Ted and Tonks took their seats to the left along with Hermione.
Dumbledore asked them, "Do you both intend to be each other's best man?"
They both nodded, "Of course."
As they were all gathered, Dumbledore started speaking, "My heart bursts with joy for all the love that exists in the world today. Today we are here to see bonding ceremonies of two of the finest men that I have known in my considerably long life. We are here to witness the bonding of Sirius Orion Black, a man who is as honorable as they come, loyal to the core and who would die for people he loves with Emmeline Vance, a lady touched by grace and splendor. I don't find a couple more perfect than them in the world at this moment. This bonding makes them complete- one in magic and soul. Sirius Black, a man who was scorned by his family for doing what was right. A man who has borne much suffering in his life and who yet stood firm in the face of it all. Emmeline Vance who is a lady who can change the fortunes of men. A lady who is grace personified and whose kindness is coveted by those who are bereft of it."
With that, he asked, "Who will speak for Sirius Orion Black?"
Harry answered, "I do. Lord Harold James Black, Lord of the House of Black."
With that, Dumbledore went through all the proper forms of the ceremony. When the bolt from his staff caused the ribbon to glow and dissolve into their hands and arms, a surge of power went through everyone in the Stone Circle. House of Black had accepted another daughter. The bride and groom were presented, but congratulations were saved for later because there was another bonding to perform.
Emmeline and Susan took their seats on the right side as Emmeline had become a Black.
Ted and Nymphadora stood to take their places before the altar along with Hermione. When they were ready, Dumbledore began to speak again, "We are here to witness the bonding of Remus Lyall Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks. Never has there been a man so kind as Remus Lupin. He has never wished ill upon anyone. A man who was scorned by the world, a man who was vilified by others for no reason, a man who was labeled as a beast and who by all rights should have hated the world yet found it in his magnanimous heart to forgive and forget everything. Nymphadora Tonks is an example of determination and bravery. A lady who has never shied away from a challenge. She sets an example for others by her conduct. A lady who had the audacity to love someone who scorned himself. A lady who made Remus Lupin realize that despite everything, he is as loved and is as deserving a person as any of us.
We are grateful to have the privilege of witnessing this bonding with Mother Magic as witness to it. Who speaks for Remus Lyall Lupin?"
A stately voice said, "I Lyall John Lupin, speak for Remus Lyall Lupin.".
Remus spun on the spot to find his father looking at him with moist eyes and a big smile on his face. Remus wanted to run up to and hug his old man but that had to wait.
"Do you Lyall Lupin endorse the groom and approve of his bonding with Nymphadora Tonks?"
"Yes, I do, Chief Warlock."
Dumbledore spoke again, "Who speaks for Nymphadora Tonks?"
Edward Tonks stepped forward, "I, Edward Tonks, speak for her."
"Do you Edward Tonks endorse the bride and your daughter and approve of her bonding with Regent Potter Remus Lyall Lupin?"
"Yes, I do, Chief Warlock.".
With that, Dumbledore produced a length of gold ribbon from his robes and asked the bride and groom to take each other by the right hand. He tied their hands together and proceeded with the bonding.
When the ribbon dissolved, there was a surge of power, but this time, it was more gentle. Mother Magic certainly solemnized their union, but this was an ally of the House of Black, not a new daughter.
When it came time for the rings, Sirius made a big show of not being able to find the ring before he admitted it had been in his palm all along. Where Hermione had been hiding the ring she passed to Tonks, Harry couldn't guess.
With the rings exchanged, Emmeline joined her new husband. There were a lot of hugs, backslapping between Remus and Sirius and tears before the couples turned to face the guests.
Dumbledore intoned, "Mother magic has approved of the union between these two and now they are two in bodies but one in soul. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you all, Mr. and Mrs. Remus Lupin.".
As soon as the bonding was over, Remus ran towards and lunged for his old man. Lyall Lupin hugged his son hard, clutching him tightly fearing he would vanish. Remus kept weeping and so did Lyall. After about 5 minutes, Remus managed to ask, "Who brought you here, father?"
Lyall turned to Harry, "Thank you Lord Peverell. If you had not insisted that I come to this marriage, I would have missed this moment."
Remus tackled Harry into a hug and said, "Thank you, Harry. I don't know if I will ever stop owing you for everything that you have done for me."
Harry smiled, "I can't take any credit for this one. It was Sirius's idea."
Harry drove the two couples, plus Ted and, Andromeda, Stephen, Mrs. Vance, Lyle, Hermione and Susan to the main tent. Unlike yesterday, there were members of the press there taking photos. When Harry saw that some of them were being rude to Collin and Dennis, he set them straight in short order. Striding up to the man he placed his hand in front of the lens to get his attention. The man turned to bark at Harry to get out of the way when Harry said, "Excuse me sir, you will treat my photographers with respect or I will have to ask you to leave."
The man snapped back, "Those are your photographers? Fine, tell those punks to stay out of my frame."
Harry grinned, showing a lot of straight, white teeth in a way that was not at all friendly. He said, "I can see that you used to work for The Daily Prophet?"
The man went red in the face saying, "Of course I work for the Daily prophet. That's what the press card says, doesn't it?"
Harry shook his head, "No, you don't. Not after Mr. Cuffe hears about how you spoke to your host."
By this time, the other photographers were all taking pictures of Harry instead of the assembling reception line.
The man finally took in the green eyes, the scar on the forehead and finally the Peverell crest on Harry's robes. His face went from red to white just as quickly. He stuttered, "M-m-my a-a-apologies, Lord Peverell. I-I-I d-d-didn't realize…"
Harry huffed, "That much is obvious. I cannot abide bullies. But, neither do I wish to become one. So, Mr. Cuffe will not hear about your conduct here today." He gave the other reporters a significant glance and continued, "If you will apologize to my friends and behave yourself, you may stay."
The logistics of setting up the reception line for a double wedding were a bit more difficult. The two separate gift tables alone took up a prodigious amount of space. In the end, the caterer set up a single line. He put Remus and Sirius side-by-side in the middle of the line with Emmeline, Susan and the Vances to Sirius's right. Tonks, Hermione, Ted, Andromeda and finally Lyle were on Remus's left. This set up meant that as Lord Black, Harry should have been the first one in the receiving line, but he still had to go and park the carriage. They left a place for him right next to the door, but it still took him ten minutes even with Dobby and Kreacher helping to get everything secured and get back to the main tent.
As people came through the receiving line, Harry greeted Lisa. While she was there, he asked, "Do you know if Michael is coming? Did you talk to him at all yesterday?"
Lisa coloured a bit and answered, "Yes, talked. You might say that." As far as she could remember, she had spent yesterday afternoon, sneaking out and snogging with Michael instead of being interrogated by Wagner.
After everyone had been received and the last guest found their seat, the receiving line proceeded to the head table. Harry joined the Vances, the Tonks, Lyall and Dumbledore at a round table to one side of the head table. Looking around, the center pieces had been replaced by arrangements of Holly and rowan with candles at the center. It also seemed that every off-duty Auror in Wizarding Britain must have been there. With very few exceptions, most of the living members of The Order of the Phoenix had come. Finally, sitting around a couple of other tables were individuals that Harry recognized as werewolves from the plantation. There was still plenty of daylight and the candles looked dim, but they gave off the odor of burning oak and elm. The table-cloths were scarlet. The gold bunting and streamers were everywhere. The butterbeer fountain was still there, but a surly looking half-troll by the looks of him was standing by behind the bar. He looked pretty mean, but the caterer confided that he knew how to mix any drink you could name and he had never failed to identify an under-aged witch or wizard.
The meal passed quickly. Before anyone knew it, the desserts were served. This time, it was Harry's job to start off the toasts.
He rose from his seat, ringing his goblet with his spoon to attract attention. The steady hum of conversation stopped as all heads turned to face him. Harry began, "I'm not much for speeches, but according to one of the grooms, I'm not getting out of it this time." He gave a wink toward Sirius.
He paused while the guests chuckled. He continued, "As Lord Black, welcome to all of you. As friends, family and colleagues of the brides or the grooms, thank-you for coming today. Today we have witnessed the bonding of Sirius Orion Black with Emmeline Vance. Of perhaps even greater importance, we have also witnessed the bonding of Remus Lyall Lupin with Nymphadora Andromeda Tonks. Mother Magic has shown her approval of both of these bondings. But, why a double bonding? The reason for this goes back to the days when my father, Sirius and Remus were the closest of friends back in their days at Hogwarts. These two men, who have suffered together through unbelievable misfortune, have laughed together through adventures that would fill books, who were separated because one of their friends betrayed them and have been reunited because the truth will always come out. They challenged one another to find joy even in these dark times. Their bravery and compassion is what true Gryffindors are all about. With that, I invite you all to raise your glasses and toast Sirius and Remus. To the grooms!"
Next, Remus took his turn, "All of you know my story. When I first came to Hogwarts, it was a very courageous decision that our Headmaster made to accommodate my 'furry little problem'. Never in my wildest dreams did I even hope to have such excellent friends as James and Sirius. And now, thanks to the efforts of a certain young potioneer, who just happens to be James's son, my 'furry little problem' is hardly a problem at all. But I do not toast Albus, James, Sirius or even Harry today. This toast is for a beautiful, courageous, selfless young lady who only sees me through the eyes of love. While having such excellent friends as James and Sirius was unexpected, her tender devotion is by far the most unexpected and delightful surprise I have ever experienced. She is the light and life and hope of my world. It will be the work of a life-time to return all the joy she has already given me. Please raise your glasses for Nymphadora Andromeda Tonks. To the bride!"
The guests all rose to their feet and toasted Tonks. Then they put their glasses down and applauded where they stood while Lupin and Tonks held each other and wept openly.
When they all sat down, Sirius stood next, "I don't know what I could say to top that!"
The crowd chuckled.
Sirius continued, "You all know my story too. I spent twelve years in Azkaban for a crime I did not commit. The only thing that kept me from complete despair was the thought that I was innocent. The experience left such deep scars that I thought I could never love again. But, thanks to Harry, I am a free man. When I returned to my work at the ministry, I expected nothing more than to do my part to put a stop to those who have caused so much misery and loss. Little did I suspect that while I was putting my heart and soul into my work, that such a charming, gracious and courageous lady would also bring an end to my heartache. I will give my all to her as she has given her all to me, so long as we both shall live. There are no words to express my gratitude. Please raise your glasses for Emmeline Vance. To the bride!"
The toasts went back and forth for a while. It all came to a halt when Ted Tonks rose to make acknowledgements to the efforts of the caterer and his support staff. Behind Remus and Sirius, Tonks matched with Emmeline for who would announce the opening of the dance floor. Tonks came up the winner.
She stood up and began cheekily, "Alright! If all you wind-bags are done with your speeches, let's all dance!"
For the dual wedding, Andromeda has hired a famous band of yesteryears known as 'Hobgolbins'. This band had been a sensation in the past but had disbanded when the lead singer Stubby Boardman had retired. Stubby wasn't ready to make a comeback but the pay which was offered to him was sufficient to convince him to come back, even if for once. Harry had a hard time to stifle his chuckle when he remembered the article that Luna had showed him from the Quibbler which had proclaimed that Sirius was actually Stubby Boardman.
"May I have your attention, please?", said Stubby. As people turned to him, he started, "It is now time for some music, the most potent of magics. If you all charming souls would stand up now, we can get this event going."
The tables and chairs all withdrew to the sides of the tent while the guests all stood to form a circle around the dance floor. The newlywed couples took their positions in the middle of the dance floor as the band finished tuning up. Sirius and Remus bowed While Emmeline and Tonks curtsied. Harry waited to see if that book about being a metamorph had helped her to become more graceful over the last few months. There were three ticks from the drummer and the dancers were away. Since Sirius and Remus were each other's best man, Harry and Ron joined with Susan and Hermione to dance after the first minute. Shortly they were joined by the Tonkses, the Vances and Lyle asked Amelia if she would join him on the dance floor. Although she was surprised, she readily agreed. Tonks did not disappoint. She was as graceful as any bride could hope to be.
AS the first dance wound down to its conclusion, Harry brought Susan with him to the stage where the band was playing. He said a few words into the ear of the lead singer and with a shrug, the man handed the mic over to Harry.
Harry began, "First, I'd like everyone to give it up for Stubby Boardman and the Hobgoblins!"
There was wild applause and cheering all around. Stubby had been persuaded to come out of retirement for this two-day engagement. He and the band bowed.
When the applause died down, Harry continued, "Now, with all due respect to Mrs. Black, this windbag has one more speech to make."
Taking Susan by the hand, he continued, "Today, we witnessed the bonding of Sirius Black with Emmeline Vance and of Remus Lupin with Nymphadora Tonks. This is their day and I don't want to take anything away from that. But, I do feel that it is appropriate to make an announcement of our own. Shortly after I was born, times were dark and difficult. Nobody knew from one day to the next if they would live to see another day. Another couple, who were close friends and allies of my parents, also had a new-born daughter. According to our ancient traditions and to provide for the welfare and future of their children in case that either couple did not survive, they entered into a marriage contract on our behalf. Unfortunately, by the time the dust settled, both couples were no longer with us and all knowledge of that marriage contract was with the Goblins of Gringotts. I myself only found out about it recently when I visited the bank on other business. My friends all know how well I received the news."
There were some awkward laughs from the Hogwarts students as they recalled how Harry had dropped out of sight for days. Only Mrs. Weasley and Susan really knew how angry Harry was when he got the news.
He continued, "But, Mother Magic has her ways. The contract may have brought us together, but once I got my head on straight, I quickly realized that I could hardly hope for someone more beautiful, more faithful, more brave or more brilliant than my intended. In case you have not already guessed, I'm talking about Heiress Susan Amelia Bones, the light of my life. Every moment with her is joy and I don't want to miss a minute of it. But, perhaps you are wondering why I mention all this right now?"
Sirius knew that Harry was about to pull something because there was a grin growing on his face. He looked towards Moony, who looked apprehensive and excited. This was going to be big!
Until this moment, only a very few of the people in the gathering knew anything about the contract. They had simply assumed that Harry had finally accepted the advances of a very pretty and determined young lady. There were just a very few who knew how upset Harry had been when not only did he find out about the contract, but that Susan had known about it since her 11th birthday.
In one fluid motion, Harry took Susan by the hand, turned to her and went down on one knee before her. With a flourish, he produced an exquisite black velvet ring box. He opened it to display, nestled in red velvet, a Goblin wrought silver filigree ring topped with a deep red oval cut beryl surrounded by tiny brilliant cut diamonds. The red Beryl, a hundred times more rare than diamonds, had originated in the mountains of Utah in the United States. As the ring caught the light, the refractions from the diamonds made the red beryl look like it was glowing from within. Although Harry certainly had the means to buy a larger stone, the workmanship, materials and design of the ring were simply stunning and the stone would have looked garish, ostentatious and out of place on Susan's tiny hand if it were any larger.
Susan bowed her head, as much to hide the rising colour in her face as to return Harry's gaze.
Looking Susan in the eye, Harry spoke earnestly and simply, "I am sorry for putting you on the spot like this. But I can't imagine a more magical moment than now, here, before so many people who love us. Susan Amelia Bones, since the day I have come to know you, my life has been changed for the better. Regardless of circumstances I have always been sure of your surpassing faithfulness. Although you are beautiful and it makes my heart skip a beat just to see you, it is your surpassing bravery and unselfish deeds that have captured my heart. You inspire me to be the best that I can be. For today and all of our tomorrows I would that I could spend them all with you. I fight for our future. I fight for our family. Will you be by my side? Will you marry me?"
Before she answered, Susan caught her aunt's eye. Amelia's face was mostly hidden behind a handkerchief as she was trying to stem her tears but she saw that Susan was looking to her. She gave a quick nod back in Susan's direction.
She extended her ring finger and said, "Yes! Oh yes! A hundred times yes!"
Harry slipped the ring onto her finger and she fell on him, bathing his head in her tears. Harry held her tenderly then rose to his feet and kissed her thoroughly. A minute or maybe an hour later, they emerged to applause.
Nearby, Sirius cleared his throat, "I do believe that our Harry has stolen our thunder, don't you Remus?"
Remus said , "Come now Harry, it is supposed to be our day after all. For Merlin's sake, even James wasn't such a glory hog."
Harry chuckled as he pulled the two men into a hug, "That's right. And I couldn't be happier for the both of you."
Sirius said, "She's quite a catch, Pup."
Remus said, "Congratulations to you and heiress Bones. She's quite lovely, Harry."
The Hobgoblins didn't get the dance music going for about half an hour because it took that long for everyone that knew Harry and Susan from school and other circles to congratulate them on their engagement.
When the mob thinned, Susan found herself with Hannah and Daphne, all three of them grinning uncontrollably, along with a few other girls.
Megan Jones pointedly asked, "Why didn't you tell us about it, Susie?"
Hannah answered for her, "Really Megan? If we told you it would have been all over the school before the end of the day."
Sally Smith laughed, "Only the school? Me thinks thou dost greatly underestimate our Megan." They all had a good chuckle over that. Then Sally Asked, "But why keep it a secret anyway? I mean marriage contracts aren't all that archaic."
Daphne answered, "With all that Harry's already been through, they felt that they didn't need any more attention."
Sally Ann-Perks apologized, "I'm sorry, Susan. I remember I was talking to you like Harry was some dish."
Daphne said, "Why apologize for speaking the truth? You were only saying what we were all thinking anyway."
Of course, the press, Collin and Dennis got lots of photos. Harry kept an eye out to make sure that they all behaved themselves.
When the dance started, it went on for a long while. The band was outstanding. Not only did they perform all of their greatest hits which were wildly popular back in the '70's but they also covered anything the guests requested from progressive rock to disco. It was Ron that won the limbo contest. Even though Harry was able to go until his shoulders nearly touched the floor, Ron was just plain skinnier. He was able to clear the limbo pole an inch lower than Harry managed.
The afternoon pressed on into early evening. As the sun approached the Horizon, Sirius tapped Stubby on the shoulder and the music stopped.
Sirius announced, "Sorry folks, the next number will be the last dance. Anyone who would like to stay is welcome to share our bon-fires for Beltane. Thank-you all for coming."
Everyone found their dates and paired up. The band struck up a love ballad that had been a number one hit back in the day. It was a special request from Sirius. Harry had carefully maneuvered Susan toward the exit so that when the song was done, they made a quick exit. When Susan asked him, "What's the big hurry?"
Harry answered, "I'm not dancing in the wood-smoke in these robes. I'm going to change into a plaid shirt and a pair of jeans."
Everywhere on the grounds and in the buildings, the fires, torches and candles were being doused. The sun was sinking fast and it would be time to light the fires soon. It was part of the Beltane tradition to light all the fires, candles and torches from the Beltane bon-fires.
Once they were inside, Harry gave Susan a quick peck on the cheek saying, "I'll be down shortly."
Susan said, "I'll meet you here" and ran off toward her room.
As Harry entered his room, he called, "Dobby. Kreacher."
There was a loud double crack as they appeared and said together, "Yes, Master?"
Harry asked urgently, "Help me get out of this monkey suit."
A few minutes later, Harry was running back down the stairs when he spotted Susan coming from the other direction. She had her hair worked into corn-rows that met at the back where it blended into a French braid. Atop her hair-do was a tiara of holly leaves. Her high-waisted jeans emphasized her slim waist and curved hips. Harry had seen her in jeans last summer, but she had both matured and had been working out since then. The effect was stunning. She wore a silk blouse worked in shades of green holly leaves and the red berries here and there. Over that, she wore a short denim jacket that just met her jeans at the waist. Her boots and belt were of green dragon-hide and echoed one of the shades of green in her blouse. She proudly wore her new ring on her hand and had even come up with diamond ear-rings with the same style of Goblin-wrought silver filagree.
Harry was wearing the blue-jeans and plaid shirt. He wore a matching jean-jacket, his heir rings and finished the outfit off with matching black dragon-hide boots and belt with snake-head buckles.
To Susan he said, "You look marvelous!"
Susan looked at him and said, "Not too shabby yourself!" She reached up with a comb and tried to get his hair to behave, but it just sprung back to its natural shape no matter what she did. In the end, she produced a bit of leather thong from her jacket pocket and just tied his hair back saying, "I understand there's a bit of wild dancing involved. You'll want your hair out of the way."
The sun was over the horizon. Harry and Susan arrived just in time to see Sirius lighting the bon-fires. Suspended from poles over the fire pits were cauldrons full of the traditional caudle. Close by but out of sight was a sheep, mounted on a spit, ready to be cooked over the fires once the flames died down to a bed of glowing coals. To their surprise, Sirius did not employ his wand, but was using a bow, dowel and block to ignite the wood by friction. As he blew on the glowing ember, the kindling then the excellent, dry oak and ash took fire quickly.
Harry looked around to see that most of the guests had left. He supposed that they went to their own Beltane celebrations. Some of those that remained were dressed much as Harry and Susan. A few others were wearing robes, but obviously not the same formal robes they had worn to the weddings.
As the flames from the two fires grew to as much as eight feet high, Sirius turned to address the guests, "Welcome to our Beltane celebration. This is the day we celebrate the beginning of Summer. We will pass between the fires, dance and celebrate to welcome the summer, invite prosperity, give thanks and invoke the protection of Mother Magic upon us. Anciently, this celebration was held half-way between the Spring equinox and the Summer solstice. In more recent times, it is held on May first."
The house elves lit torches from the bonfires and carried them off to re-light all the fires, candles and torches on the manor grounds and in the manor house.
Sirius continued, "Part of the ritual of rebirth is to extinguish all fires and relight them from the bonfires. This is the day of the year that herdsmen and shepherds drive their livestock to summer pastures. We will eat the bannock, drink the caudle and later on, feast on roast lamb. It is tradition that the smoke and ash from the bonfires bestow protection. Given the times we live in, we could use all the protection we can get. The last part of the celebration is for adults only. So, when I give the word, those who are not yet of age will retire to the manor house."
They started off the celebration by lining up and dancing as they passed between the fires. Then they danced while circling around the fires so that everyone had a turn to go through the smoke. The elves appeared with trays full of the oatmeal cakes and the cauldrons were swung out of the fires. Every guest was given a bannock and a small clay bowl full of the caudle dipped from the great cauldron.
Dumbledore gave the invocation, "May Mother Magic bless and multiply all our endeavors. May we seek out and defeat evil in all its many forms. May we all enjoy the company of good friends where ever we may go. And may the road always rise up to meet you."
While raising their cups, as one the guests chorused, "Here's mud in your eye!" They all took a deep drink from the caudle and ate their bannocks. For the next hour or so, people took it in turns to dance around the fire and to visit with old friends. When the flames died down, the sheep was brought forth and mounted over one of the fires to cook with much ceremony while pipers played the bag-pipes.
Sirius produced a hat. When Harry asked what this was about, Sirius just grinned and said, "You'll see." To the guests he said, "I want all the men who feel up to a challenge to come forth and draw a bit of bannock from the hat. Do not eat it. I'll tell you what this is all about when the last bit has been drawn."
They all came forth, except a few of the very old. Alastor considered a minute before drawing a piece himself.
Sirius took the last piece from the hat and stuffed the hat in his pocket. He then said, "One bit of bannock has been marked with charcoal. Have a look."
A moment later Ernie MacMillan came forward, "This one is marked with charcoal. Now what?"
Sirius grinned, gesturing to the fire that did not have a whole lamb roasting over it, "You get to leap over the fire three times, then we all get to pretend that you're dead."
Ernie ask, "But why?"
Sirius shrugged, "Beats me. Tradition I suppose."
With all the training the Order of the Snow Leopard had been doing, the task was easy, but it was sort of amusing to watch Ernie's discomfiture grow as people spoke lovingly about him in the past tense.
As the evening and the dancing wore on, pretty much all the men who were able jumped over the fire as part of their dancing. Even some of the women did it just for fun.
When the fires were pretty much burnt out, the lamb was carved and served. It didn't take long before it was all gone. The same potioneer that had dipped from the well at the beginning of the day also took ashes from the fire at the stroke of mid-night. Following that, the guests took ashes from the fire and dobbed them on themselves.
This was when Sirius made the announcement, "Sorry kids, the rest of the celebration is for adults only."
Most of Harry's school friends were only too happy to withdraw. It had been a very long couple of days and they were all both tired and full.
As Harry was escorting Susan from the fireside, Sirius got his attention, "Aunt Andromeda will be here if you need anything, Pup. Bill and Fleur are honeymooning at the Black beach house on the French Riviera. Emmeline and I, along with Remus and Tonks will be at the lodge in Ireland where you stayed over the Christmas break."
Harry smiled broadly saying, "That sounds wonderful. Susan and I will be staying here until the Beltane break is over." Then sobering he said, "Keep the mirror handy. I won't call you unless I absolutely have to, but I don't want to have to send Dobby after you."
Sirius cringed, "Oh no! Anything but that." Then he settled down, "OK, You've got it Pup. Anything else?"
Harry just smiled and said, "If my Mom and Dad were here, they would be bursting with joy today. Congratulations again. You deserve to be happy."
