Can I tell you something just between you and me?

Kagome was prepared for what would come after the last battle. It took many nights of silent reflection to come to terms that one, she would never be with Inuyasha, and two, she would be returned to her time because that's where she really belonged.

However, she was not prepared for one of the two to not be true, and she most certainly did not prepare when two noblemen, three priests, and seven guards showed up mere seconds after the defeat of Naraku looking for her.

None of them were.

Miroku had a broken staff in hand, and the beads that once kept his curse at bay were now thrown about at his feet; lucky for them all, he no longer needed them. His hair was a mess, and his clothing was torn here and there. Sango was sweating, her bangs stuck to her forehead, and her weapon was broken in half on the ground. Inuyasha didn't fare much better; his clothes were torn, he was bleeding from the arm, and his feet were covered in bruises and dirt.

Kagome, of course, was on her butt in the most undignified manner. Her face was covered in dirt, and her legs were covered in dirt and blood. She quickly adjusted to sit on her bruised knees in front of the men looking for her.

"Oi, what the hell is this about?" Inuyasha still panting, seemingly annoyed that they had not even had a second to catch their breaths.

"Lady Shikon, we come on behalf of the Noble Shin family; we seek your aid." One nobleman in colors of blue bowed.

"Io, im about sick of saving everyone,"

"Be silent," Sesshomaru said, making Kagome look back at him.

He stood there with not a hair out of place, not a spec of dirt on his clothes. Only his sword held blood and his boot covered in mud. It was baffling to her how he stayed so clean because she knew more than anyone how easy it was for him to get his hand's dirty per se- in combat.

"Lord Sesshomaru, of fortuitous for us that you are also here," All the men went to the ground and bowed deeply, as a sign of respect.

"Pardon, but why are you looking for us?" Kagome asked, still trying to gather her wits about her.

The men did not rise, but the nobleman did look at her. "My lady's father has sent me to you in hopes that would you return with us and reward the house with your blessing,"

"Blessing?" She asked,

He then turned his head to Sesshomaru. "As well are yours, My Lord,"

"Why do you need our blessing?" Kagome asked, tilting her head. The headman looked at her once more. "My lady, the princess is of Royal birth, a Miko is needed, and her father wished only for the best."

"Yeah, well, why do you need him?" Inuyasha asked the group,

Bowing his head back to the ground, he spoke, "My lady wishes to marry a demon prince,"

"That has nothing to do with me," Sesshomaru spoke, making them all look at him.

"But My Lord, they need your blessing to marry,"

Sesshomaru turned away. "Not interested,"

The men looked worried and set their eyes back on Kagome. Kagome got up as Sesshomaru began to walk away. "Sesshomaru, wait up!"

The nobleman looked at the rest of the group as whispers went around the priest. "She is not formal with my Lord?"

"K, yeah, and she's the only one to get away with it to," Inuyasha snapped. They would do well to remember that.

Kagome ran up to Sesshomaru and stood in front of him."Sesshomaru,"

"Move,"

"Why can't you help?"

"My father did not need permission to take his human bride,"

"But the fact that they are seeking your permission is proof they respect you; after all its, not a secret how you feel about a human and demon mating,"

Sesshomaru slightly narrowed his eyes for a second, "Do not presume to understand me, Miko; their affair means little to me."

Their eyes met.

"Then, is it merely because she is human?"

"I do not care about her humanity,"

Kagome looked confused.

"You all presume to know me, yet you know nothing."

"I know you hated Inuyasha's mother,"

"I did not hate her,"

"Then?" She pressed. This was the most he had ever spoken.

"It is not a simple as her humanity or the half breed that came from it,"

He began to walk around Kagome. "It is a matter or worth,"

"Worth?"

"She was of noble birth and yet seduce my father; she was weak and small-minded and did nothing but get pregnant with a child that would dilute our bloodline,"

"Do you still think Inuyasha isn't worthy?" She had thought that perhaps Sesshomaru did care about Inuyasha, but maybe she had been wrong?

Sesshomaru had long ago come to terms with Inuyasha; though he was a weaker link, he was strong and the rightful second son to their father. Sesshomaru had learned a valuable lesson over the last five years. But in the end, Sesshomaru would still favor Kagome over his own brother; her worth was much more, though he would never admit that to anyone on either account. He enjoyed letting people think what they wished. She had earned her place in rank though she didnt even know it. He was glad now that he had not wasted her life that day in his father's grave. She had proven her value rather quickly with him even though he knew she wasn't trying, at least not on his behalf.

"This is not about Inuyasha," Kagome stated. "This about two people we dont even know; if this is about worth, how can you judge when you haven't even met them,"

Always quick, she was. "You are still here," He said, walking,

Kagome looked at her hands. "I guess I am,"

"I know of your future, and you know of my past. How is it Miko that you have not connected the dots?"

Confusion met her dirty face. "I, I dont follow."

He stopped and looked at her,

"You are surely connected to my family,"

He saw the sting. "This is not about Inuyasha," He said gracefully. "In your future, demons do not exist; this is what you have told me."

She didn't understand what was getting at.

"Who knew it would begin with my family,"

Kagome gasped,

When he learned of her future, he knew the cause. It wasn't war, but breeding. Watering down of bloodlines. While other bloodlines meant little to him, his meant everything.

Her lips parted. "I understand your view and where you are coming from, but Sesshomaru blood will always be blood,"

"Tainted blood which one day will see no power," His whole race would be gone.

"That's not entirely true,"

This time rose, and an elegant eyebrow and Kagome lifted her hands and let power dance across her fingertips. "I was born in the future, remember, my power just needed unlocking,"

This was indeed true, but still. Perhaps maybe she was the key to changing it?

"Even if what you think is true, you can't stop it," Kagome stated, not really helping her case for his help.

This was always true, but it didnt mean he would aid it.

"One day Rin may want to marry a handsome demon Prince; after all, look who her father is,"

This time he did narrow his eyes, a clear message that told her that was a cheap shot, a good shot but a cheap one.

"Cant, we at least meet them and then pass your judgment; what if one day Rin asks the same of us?"

Rin, his little Rin. If he had hopes of not losing her to humanity, it would lie with his kind. It indeed was a catch. Perhaps his father knew more than he ever let on. But how could the stong let the weak inherit the earth? How could the mightly fall to the hands of a human woman? It was questions Sesshomaru did not wish to really indulge. To him, at least at the time of his father's death is was a curse. No human was worthy; of course, his view on it had changed somewhat.

"I am still here, and I assume for a reason, but until I figure that out, I can't just sit and follow your brother around. I have to do something and I rather do something with meaning, something to earn my keep,"

None of that really mattered to him. Rin mattered to him. Respected mattered to him. Being feared, regarded and respected mattered to him.

His old way of thinking could no longer be applied here, and he knew it. Just because one wasn't worthy, didnt mean another would not be, and he knew that in these times, his kind was quickly becoming of unworthy of their power. He had never killed a man who didnt deserve it, but perhaps sometimes it was in haste.

"Your father broke the laws, Sesshomaru; these people are trying to do right by it, by you. They respect you, your laws they dont want to upset you, I dont want to upset you-

"Enough woman,"

Kagome closed her mouth.

"Would you not find me a hypocrite?"

"What, no, just wiser,"

Sesshomaru looked her over. Because he respects her and loved Rin, he would do this.

"At your request only Miko, but I have a demand of my own,"

"Ok?" She said slowly, slightly shocked that he was indulging her, something he used to tease Inuyasha about.

"Since you are no longer returning to your birth time, you must lose the clothes."

"At your request, only My Lord," She smiled. He did not like that as much as he thought he would, but they had to do it right if they were going to do this. "This conversation, Miko, is to stay between you and me."

He was a man of little word for a reason.

Kagome bowed her head.
