So I was asked to write this a while back but I wasn't sure how to even begin. Well, I wound up adding some ideas of my own as well as stuff from the anime. Hope you like it!

Ash and his pokemon had been staying at Cerise Laboratories in Vermillion City for a few months now. He hadn't know what to expect when he agreed to become Professor Cerise' assistant but he had really come to like it. The people there were so nice and he quickly found a new friend and traveling companion in Goh.

They certainly had colorful times. Heck, they had even seen Lugia on the day Ash arrived. They had seen some amazing things out there, like the island of Dragonair and Dragonite and the ruins where they encountered Golurk. Some of their adventures even happened right here and he was happy with them. For example, meeting Gengar...err, okay that could've gone better, much better, but Ash blamed all the trouble from that day on Gengar's ex-trainer. The ghost type made for a great friend now. The day where they helped Professor Cerise teach some kids about pokemon was a lot of fun. He had even captured a baby Riolu who turned out to be a real go-getter, determined to become strong no matter what. Despite the hiccups they had been through after it hatched, Ash liked Riolu's drive and he vowed to do all he could to help it.

Naturally, Ash was also making sure to train when possible and keep working to become a pokemon master. The thought made him remember the Flute Cup. Ash and Goh agreed that Mimey had been the star of that day. He had known the Mr. Mime for so years but he had never knew it was so good at battling, Mimey was impressive. Seeing Leon's match, meeting the Champion in person and battling him were definitely times he would not forget either. They had been what lead to him entering the Pokemon World Championships. Ash was determined to have an official match with the Champion and win.

To do that, he needed to gets points through battles and raise his rank to Master. Ash had been making decent progress in that regard, having had a good number of battles since he entered. He had just been taking his pokemon to the pokemon center after a training session when he came across an ad on TV which mentioned an upcoming tournament over in Kalos.

Ash grinned ''We've gotta tell Goh and the others about this. You ready for another challenge, Pikachu?'' The mouse pokemon nodded happily back. ''Then let's go!''

It was after they arrived at the lab that they ran into Chloe, who was preoccupied with the ever energetic Yamper. They seemed to be having some sort of exchange but he couldn't tell what was going on from here.

''Hey, Chloe!'' He called.

The girl started and turned, giving a slight smile then ''Oh hi, Ash. Were you looking for Dad?''

''Yeah, but never mind that now. What's up?''

''It looked like Yamper so Dad suggested that I play with it.'' Chloe stated, Ash noticing the red ball she had in her hand then. ''We've been at it for a while but Yamper's still a ball of energy.''

Ash began to smile ''No wonder Yamper looks that happy. You two sure get along, huh?''

''I guess...''

The lacklustre reply left him a little puzzled but it did make him remember something he wanted to bring up with the girl ''Say, Chloe?'' The girl blinked. ''I've been wondering...you said you're not really interested in Pokemon but it looks like you'd get along with them great if you tried. Like Yamper and Pidove. I think Nami's Milotic liked you the best out of us all.''

Chloe couldn't help but smile a bit, remembering the sweet little girl and her Feebas, who they had helped until it evolved. Really, it had been just about her wanting to help Nami after seeing how hard they were working with Feebas. "You think so?''

''Yeah, I was just wondering if maybe you never really connected to Pokemon.'' Ash admitted.

She exhaled ''Maybe. It's not that I have anything against them-I'm not sure how to put it but I guess I just never felt that invested with pokemon emotionally. Nothing like you and Goh. It really didn't help that...''

''What?'' Ash prompted. He didn't know much about Chloe but he'd like to. The girl was quiet and sometimes stern but it was obvious that she was a caring person too.

Chloe wondered if she should go on but it did seem that Ash was interested to hear her out ''...people keep making assumptions about me. Dad's a famous researcher, which is great and all but it always winds up with me being compared to him. All my classmates think I know a lot about Pokemon and that I must want to be a researcher just like him. It's really annoying, dealing with those expectations. I don't know what I want to be now, why should I?''

''I hear you.'' He nodded. The boy could imagine how irritating such pressure could be. Ash would be of the opinion that it was best to ignore those people but he knew that was easier said than done. ''That sounds like a real pain. It's a bit like what Gary had to deal with...''

Chloe gave him a curious look ''Gary?''

Ash hadn't meant to say that out loud but he figured he might as well explain ''Oh, Gary's an old friend and rival of mine. He's Professor Oak's grandson.''

Like many others, Chloe had heard plenty about Professor Oak. After all, who hadn't? He was the foremost authority on Pokemon and she knew her father got along well with him. Finding out that Ash knew someone with circumstances similar to her own had her curious ''So what's he like?''

''Gary's great, sure, we used to fight a lot years ago but we both changed for the better. I used to think he was real cocky because he was Professor Oak's grandson and people praised him for all he knew. It turns out that he actually studied plenty to learn about pokemon, he told me he had to deal with those kinds of expectations too. It took him some time to adapt and find his own way and goals in life. You might just need time to figure things out, Chloe.'' Ash remarked.

The girl thought it over, she could see the sense in those words. Gary had clearly dealt with the situation differently but he definitely knew how it felt. ''You may be on to something there...hmm, I'll need to think about this.''

''Fair enough.'' The boy had a thought. ''Hey, you want to come with me to the garden? I was thinking of checking up on my pokemon.''

''Eh?'' She looked surprised. ''Well, sure I guess...didn't you want to talk to Dad though?''

''Ah, that can wait.'' Ash assured. ''You want to hang out with me and my pokemon? They're really friendly, it'll be a blast.''

Chloe began to smile as Pikachu chimed in agreement, waving at Chloe invitingly. One thing Ash had in common with Goh was their enthusiasm when it came to Pokemon. Watching them had her wondering at times what pokemon training would be like. She didn't even know if she wanted to be a trainer but there was no harm in taking their invite. Besides, she may not know Ash all that well but she would like to change that. He had been very nice to her.

''Sure, let's go.''

The two had a good time together. Chloe thought Ash's Gengar was basically a troll but the pokemon actually had some funny tricks it showed off for them. It was surprisingly amiable, making her think she really did misunderstand it. Chloe supposed it was just that thing about first impressions...

The only one of Ash's pokemon she was actually familiar with was Mimey and that was because they all participated in the barrier pokemon's exercises. It was currently trying to show said exercises to Ash's Farfetch'd and Riolu, with practically no success. And yet Mimey remained patient and kept urging them to try again, there was certainly something to be said for its diligence.

''...This is looking like a lost cause...'' She told Ash as they watched the three.

He chuckled ''Yeah, I guess Mimey just feel better this way but I really can't see those two actually buckling down and working on this.''

Chloe gave a small smile as she watched Yamper play with Pikachu nearby ''Your pokemon sure have their unique personalities, huh? I wonder how you deal with it all and yet look at you, you all get along so well.''

''Hehe, I'm trying.'' Ash grinned. ''I figure it just comes with being a trainer. Pokemon are just like people, they have all sorts of personalities that depend on many things. Sure we had some rough spots here and there but we're all good buds now.''

''Looks that way...'' Chloe agreed ''...I've been wondering, Goh told me a few things...did Riolu really go challenge an Onix the day it hatched? That sounds crazy.''

''Oh, it really is...'' The boy agreed, glancing at the pokemon in question''...but we worked things out. Riolu's determined to get stronger and I know just how that feels. We've agreed to keep improving and becoming stronger together, right?''

Riolu barked an affirmative, smiling at him in return.

Ash had a thought ''Hey speaking of, where is Goh anyway? He usually shows up around now.''

''Not sure, last I checked he said something about a new pokemon nearby that he just had to catch and took off with Raboot.'' Chloe said with a shrug

The boy blinked, he was used to his friend rushing off in such a situation but... ''Huh, I thought he would have caught all the pokemon around these parts for sure by now...''

''Same here. Of course by now, he's probably gone and gotten himself in trouble again.'' The girl stated flatly.

''Come on, you don't know that. Let's be a little optimistic...''

But as it were, Chloe was more right than she knew.

Goh had indeed been on his way to the laboratories when he overheard a few people talking about Tentacruel being sighted at the harbor. Believing this to be his chance, he immediately headed over to look for said pokemon.

However...

Goh held back a groan, looking at Raboot as it approached ''No luck?'' The fire type shook its head. ''Yeah, same here...oh!''

''Bi?'' Raboot blinked and followed its trainer's line of sight as Goh ran to the beach, only to see a Politoed swimming in the ocean.

Well, that explained it. Raboot may not be nearly as invested in catching Pokemon as Goh (which when you consider the boy's enthusiasm on the subject, was perfectly understandable) but even it knew that Politoed were a rare sight in the wild.

Goh grinned as he fingered a pokeball ''I'm not going to miss this chance!'' He jumped into the air, which was when Politoed noticed him. ''Go, Pokeball!''

Politoed quickly scampered away, leaving it to miss. ''Oh man...'' Goh decided to come closer so he would be more likely to get it right.

He got in the water and walked ahead, pausing as it felt like he stepped on something soft. Seeing nothing of the sort, Goh decided to ignore this and focused on Politoed.

But just as he closed in on the pokemon...

''Hey, Ditto! Are you done?'' A voice called.

''Ditto?'' Goh echoed, bewildered as he saw that the source of the voice was a boy standing on the shore. Why would he say that? There weren't Ditto here...

Unless...

Politoed perked up and hurried over to the boy. A second later, it transformed into a Ditto who was picked up by the boy then.

''Aw man, you're kidding me...'' Goh slumped. He had been chasing a Ditto all along? And one that had a trainer too...

He was beginning to wonder if he could find Tentacruel in the first place.

A Tentacool swam towards him, seeming angry. It fired a blast of Bubblebeam that had Goh duck to dodge it.

''H-hey, what's wrong?! What did I do?'' The boy demanded, dodging another strike. The pokemon's eyes narrowed and it was followed by two others who were clearly also upset. Goh hurried towards the shore and was fortunately helped by Raboot, who kicked two of them away.

He sighed in relief ''Thanks...''

Unfortunately, that was when it got worse. Goh discovered that the rumors were true. There were Tentacruel in this area, as the three Tentacool where joined by this very pokemon seconds later. Trouble was, it was even angrier with Goh than its friends were.

Faced with all that, Goh knew they had only one option...

Ren's lips twitched ''And you ran like a Golbat from hell, huh?''

''Yeah...'' Goh slumped in his seat, having told everyone what happened. He and Raboot had indeed dashed away from Tentacruel, thankfully able to escape safely. ''...what a pain...''

Chloe gave Ash a knowing look that plainly said 'See?'. His lips twitched, deciding to leave it at that. She had been right after all.

''That's one rough time...'' Chrysa patted his shoulder in sympathy.

''You can say that again.'' Goh groused. ''Okay, change of subject! Hey Ash, Chloe, what'd you guys do today?''

''Oh, we just hung out in the gardens with the pokemon.'' The boy returned. ''It was great.''

Professor Cerise perked up, looking at his daughter then ''Well, how about that-did you have fun?''

Chloe gave a small smile ''Yeah, Ash invited me-his pokemon sure are friendly. He taught me a bunch of stuff about them.''

The man and his two assistants seemed pleased at the news. Chloe hadn't expressed much interest in interest in Pokemon for as long they'd known her. Perhaps the boy would be able to change that? He was off to a good start at least.

''Oh, Professor, I heard about this tournament over in the Kalos region. You mind if I go compete?'' Ash wanted to know. He was naturally excited as per the usual for him. However, being one of Professor Cerise' research fellows, Ash thought it was only right to ask him for permission first. The man had really helped him out during his stay here so far after all.

The man smiled ''What a coincidence, I was actually planning to tell you about that myself. There's quite a few events out there which trainers can use to gain more points and raise their ranking for the World Championships, I thought you'd be interested. Of course you can go.''

Ash grinned ''Thanks!''

Goh looked intrigued ''So we get to go to Kalos again? Nice! There's a whole lot of pokemon I haven't caught there. When's the tournament?''

''In two days,'' Professor Cerise replied. ''I guess you boys better get ready then.''

''Yeah!'' The two returned happily.

Ash had a thought ''Hey Chloe, how about you come too?''

The girl's eyes widened ''What?''

Goh perked up ''Good idea, Ash!'' He looked at his old friend before adding ''Yeah, you totally should. You've never come out on the road with us before, it'll be a blast!''

Chloe blinked twice ''Ah...but...'' She was distracted when Pikachu and Yamper called out to her happily. Both pokemon were obviously all for the idea.

''It's an experience.'' Professor Cerise added helpfully. ''What's the harm, Chloe? Consider it a change of pace.''

''Well...'' The girl started, feeling put on the spot. ''...okay, I'll go, might as well try, right?''

Two days later...

The tournament was held in a small town near Snowbelle City. The winner was to receive a monetary prize as well as a decent amount of vitamins for Pokemon, like Protein, Calcium and the like. Once Ash was done with the registration, he was well on his way to compete.

Chloe and Goh were hurrying on their way to the stands with their pokemon, knowing that Ash was about to start battling soon.

The first paused, noticing that her friend was lingering behind ''What're you doing? We have to go...''

She trailed off, noticing a tearful Sobble standing next to Raboot. Goh's attention was mostly on the first ''So no good? Come on!''

''Hey, what'd you do to make the poor thing cry?'' Chloe demanded.

''Nothing!'' Goh said at once. ''It's just...well...I thought Sobble could stay out with us...''

The girl arched an eye ''Are you sure? You can be tactless, you know.''

''I resent that...'' He grumbled. Both were distracted at the sight of Sobble scampering back as a curious Yamper approached it.

''Per?'' The electric type blinked, obviously puzzled. What had it done? It was just going to say hello.

Goh sighed ''Sobble's just...really shy. I thought we could start to help it out of its shell.''

Chloe looked thoughtful ''Well, that's good but you might be coming on a little too strong. This place is going to get pretty crowded soon.'' She had an idea. ''Say, Sobble?'' The pokemon looked at her meekly as she bent to its level. ''It'll be just fine. I know it looks like a scary place but you'll be safe with us. Of course, no one's saying you have to stay out, just think about it, okay? You trust Goh to help you, right?''

Sobble nodded after a moment, it seemed that her words were having a good calming effect on it. But then, the water type surprised them by hurrying into Goh's bag and hiding there.

Chloe frowned a bit, she thought it could help but perhaps that was too much to expect ''So much for that...''

Goh looked happy ''What're you talking about? That was great, I was sure I'd have to return it to its pokeball. That definitely helped. Right, Sobble?'' He looked towards the bag.

After a couple of moments, Sobble poked its head out and gave a soft affirmative cry. Goh seemed satisfied ''See? All good!''

Chloe's lips twitched into a small smile ''I guess...''

''How'd you do that anyway?'' He asked as they continued walking to the stands.

''Oh, I remembered watching Mom calm down a couple of scared kids kind of like that.'' Chloe admitted with a shrug. ''Ash showed me a bunch of stuff when we were at the lab the other day too. Other than that, I sort of just improved.'' One thing she particularly remembered was that Ash stressed the importance of speaking to pokemon from your heart so she wanted to apply that here.

''Nice going, come on, it's about to start!'' Goh exclaimed, leading everyone ahead.

The tournament kicked off with a flurry and the excitement was at a fever pitch. Ash was doing very well, having almost dominated the first two matches with Pikachu and Dragonite. He was already considered one of the favorites to win the whole thing.

''Wow...'' Chloe trailed off.

''Ash's really something else, huh?'' Goh grinned, seeing her nod then.

Sure, she may not enjoy battling much but there was something about seeing Ash so engaged in the match, so at sync and working perfectly together that left her in awe. Had they always been like that and she just never noticed?

''Magmar, Fire Punch!'' Ash's third opponent ordered.

''Dodge and get ready to counter!'' Ash called.

Gengar floated out of Magmar's way with ease, getting an idea then. It gained a mischevious gleam in its eyes then as it went invisible, leaving Magmar flummoxed. Then before anyone knew it Gengar appeared right in front of its face, pulling off a frightening expression that freaked the fire type out.

Chloe's eyes widened ''What was that?'' Ash didn't actually mean anything like this, did he?

''You learn not to ask when it comes to Gengar.'' Goh deadpanned. He was really glad Sobble had hidden itself in his bag again earlier. If Gengar's trick scared Magmar, he didn't want to think of what it would do to the little water type.

''Oh? That was quite a counter, what an impressive Scary Face!'' The announcer remarked.

Ash laughed weakly while Pikachu sweatdropped as they watched the ghost type snicker. Both were well aware that this was nothing of the sort. It was just Gengar being Gengar.

The boy decided to capitalize on this ''Use Shadow Ball!''

Gengar created two Shadow balls before merging them into a bigger one which it then hurled at Magmar. The pokemon stumbled back, trying to pull itself together before it finally collapsed a moment later.

Ash grinned as he was declared the winner ''All right, just a little more!''

Eventually, Ash made it to the final round, his opponent being a girl a few years older than him named Laia. She had kicked things off by using a Stoutland so Ash decided on a similar vein to choose Dragonite. Judging by the girl's confidence, the pokemon was clearly one of her best.

And it showed, Stoutland really had power to spare. It was able to meet some of their moves head on and counter aptly. It used Take Down on command, which Ash had Dragonite dodge with Dragon Dance.

''Now Dragon Claw!''

Dragonite's arm thrummed with power as it lashed out, throwing Stoutland back from the force of the strike. The pokemon cringed as it got up, clearly having sustained plenty of damage.

Laia grit her teeth ''All right, use Roar!''

Stoutland gave a mighy cry that startled Dragonite, with the move taking its effect. It was sent back to its pokeball only to be replace by Riolu.

''Oh, that's quite a good timing for a Roar! What will Ash do now?'' The announcer wondered.

Riolu blinked twice, understandably bewildered at this turnout. Ash's eyes narrowed ''Riolu, this is the final round. They switched you in all of a sudden, ready to battle?''

The fighting type gave an affirmative bark and turned to their opponents as the girl ordered her pokemon to use Fire Fang.

''Jump and use Force Palm!''

Riolu jumped up high, preparing the attack as it descended, causing extra damage with the added momentum.

''Stoutland!'' The girl gasped.

''Nice, Riolu! Hang on there and use another Force Palm!'' Ash commanded.

''Shake it off!'' The girl returned.

But it was too late. Grabbing some of Stoutland's fur, Riolu prepared another Force Palm with its free paw and struck hard and true once again. After that, the pokemon collapsed. The referee declared Riolu the winner of this round and Stoutland was returned to its pokeball.

In moments, the second round was initiated and Laia sent out a Skarmory. The battle quickly continued.

''Skarmory, use Agility and then Fury Attack!'' Laia commanded.

The armor bird pokemon began to glow, signifying its boost in speed. Ash figured they wouldn't have much time to avoid what was coming so he had Riolu guard as much as possible.

It turned out he was right. Skarmory was so fast that Riolu could barely even see it, defending against the fast paced attack was the only thing the emanation pokemon could do.

Ash saw a chance to counterstrike just after Fury Attack ended ''Riolu, Force Palm!''

''Fly up!'' Laia called.

Skarmory tried to do so but Riolu quickly pursued it, using a few of the rocks in the battlefield to leap into the air and slam it.

Laia scowled ''Swift!''

''Double Team!'' Ash countered.

The battle continued at this pace, with one side countering and endeavoring to overome the other. Both pokemon were slowly getting worn out and things were soon down to the wire...

''Air Cutter!''

''Dodge it!''

Riolu endeavored to dodge the oncoming blasts as best as it could, leaving most to his various parts of the field and raise a dustcloud. Ash was relieved to see that it had succeeded but then he noticed his opponent's smirk and immediately knew something was wrong.

''Skarmory, Drill Peck!''

Before he quite knew it, Skarmory was above Riolu, striking a moment later. The little fighting type was sent crashing down as a result, yelping in pain.

''Oh! That Air Cutter was a distraction all along. A clever ploy from Laia, how will Ash respond?'' The announcer wondered.

Ash knew he had to act fast. Riolu had taken plenty of damage to go around with after that attack. However, Skarmory was well above them and Riolu only had one long distance attack and he doubted it would help here...

A thought occurred to him...unless...

Chloe frowned as on her old friend perked up ''What're you smiling about? This isn't good.''

But Goh's expression didn't change ''See that look on his face? Ash has a plan.''

''Riolu, propel yourself with Vacuum Wave!''

The order left everyone surprised but that attack did end getting Riolu just above its opponent. Which was exactly what Ash wanted.

''Reversal!''

''Skarmory...!'' Laia was about to call an attack but she didn't have time as Riolu was far too close to dodge. She grit her teeth when the armor bird was almost thrown down from the power of the Reversal as Riolu landed on a tall rock. ''Hang in there, use Swift!''

The pokemon angled its head and fired the star shaped blasts but Ash wouldn't let that stop him ''Force Palm and give it all you'e got!''

Riolu charged what power it could muster at the moment before striking its opponent.

''Skarmory is unable to battle, Riolu wins. This match goes to Ash!'' The referee declared, eliciting numerous cheers.

''And there we have it folks! After an amazing show of skill, teamwork and power the winner of our tournament is Ash Ketchum of Pallet Town!'' The announcer exclaimed. ''Let's give him and his team a big hand!''

The crowd certainly had no trouble with that call, it was clear that Ash had impressed them all today.

''You go, Ash!'' Goh cheered.

Chloe smiled, gathering Yamper in her arms before her eyes traveled to their friend, who was happily addressing his pokemon. They'd certainly deserved the win. It was funny, she had watched battles and even a few tournaments and such on TV with her family before but somehow seeing this one felt much better. She wondered how that worked.

The group threw a little celebration in the pokemon with Goh and Chloe putting together a veritable feast for the winners at dinner.

''You're friends with the Lumiose City gym leader?'' Goh blinked, cutting Ash off as he regaled them with a story about his days in Kalos.

''Oh yeah, Clemont's great. He and his sister Bonnie traveled with me back when I first came to Kalos.'' Ash informed. ''He's a strong gym leader, brilliant with science stuff too. Most of his inventions did wind up exploding for some reason though...''

Chloe blinked ''Wait, what?''

Goh looked just as confused ''Yeah, he's that good with science and his inventions blow up a lot?''

''Ah, how do I explain?'' Ash stopped to think ''The stuff he made actually did help out at first. I think it's just that Clemont has really weird luck. He worked hard on that stuff to help us out but usually something or the other goes wrong and it winds up exploding.''

''...You're right, that is some weird luck.'' Goh decided.

Chloe seemed amused ''Sounds like it would make for some interesting stories though.''

Ash laughed ''It sure did.''

Goh remembered something ''Hey, speaking of stories, I saw this one on a magazine with your Mom's illustration, Chloe. It looked an awful lot like you...''

The girl held back a groan ''...Of course you saw that.''

''Oh yeah, that bedhead was impossible to miss...'' He started, shooting her a grin. ''...I remember how bad it was in real life. It is pretty unforgettable...''

An annoyed Chloe was about to retort but then Ash spoke up ''Lay off her. It actually looked pretty cute.'' The two looked at him in surprise. ''What? Chloe looks good practically every time I've seen her. You wish you had it that easy, Goh.''

The boy spluttered in protest at this while Chloe laughed, though she was sure she felt her face grow somewhat warm from these words. ''You're just saying that...''

''Nah, it's true and I know about bedheads.''

Chloe's smile widened ''You mean that actually gets worse?''

Ash affected a wounded look but it was clear that he was just as amused ''You haven't seen anything yet.''

The girl didn't miss Pikachu nodding in assent to that, which made her snicker while Ash deadpanned at this partner. ''Well, you do make it work. Though I'm sure a part of that has to do with the hat, the look suits you.''

''Thanks. And Pikachu, don't act like it didn't have to do with you shocking me awake all those times.''

''Pi.'' Pikachu shrugged in 'what-can-you-do' manner.

''Well, given that you sleep like a rock, can't say I blame Pikachu.'' Goh stated, making Ash huff.

''...I really should be surprised, but somehow I'm not.'' Chloe mused, stopping to pick Yamper up when it skipped over to her. ''So any plans now that the tournament's done?''

''Well, our flight's still in a few days so we can stick around some more.'' Goh pointed out. ''I want to catch more pokemon. Besides, we're close to Snowbelle City and I heard something interesting about these parts.''

Ash blinked ''What's that?''

The following day, the three prepared themselves and took the nearest route to Snowbelle city. Ash, Chloe and their pokemon had to wait for Goh, who had apparently overslept.

Ash sat in the pokemon center's hall while Chloe and Yamper left for a little walk. The boy idly wondered what Goh was even doing before to sleep this long. He was distracted by the sight of a white carton that made him look right to see Chloe holding one up.

He picked up ''What's that?''

''Gelato, Yamper noticed a place selling it nearby so I figured I could give it a shot.'' She admitted. ''Thought you might want some.''

Ash perked up ''Awesome, thanks!'' He took the spoon she offered then.

''I might have taken a couple of guesses with the scoops but Parker told me those flavors are awfully good.'' The girl added, sitting next to him.

Ash tried one ''Totally, that hits the spot!''

''Hehe, consider it a little extra for winning the tournament then.'' Chloe smiled, earning a grin from him before both turned to their treats, sharing some with their pokemon too.

''So you liked watching one up close and personable?'' Ash inquired.

''Oh yeah, I remember you said it'd be different if we were actually in the stadium but I really understood back then. Looking back, watching the matches on TV would've been kind of dull in comparison.''

''Right? There's just something about being there to see it all happen that you can't beat!'' Ash exclaimed.

Chloe smiled ''Oh, did I tell you? Dad finished writing a book recently about the relationships of people and pokemon.''

''Really? What's it like?''

The two continued to talk, hardly even noticing the time as they didn't seem to run out of subjects to talk about-to their own surprise. Still, it made for some nice time and once Goh showed up, they were off.

Goh was taking note of everything with interest, making sure to catch pokemon like he intended all along.

Chloe sighed as her old friend ran off after a Noctowl ''You'd think the Tentacruel fiasco would've taught him something.''

Raboot's expression suggested that it agreed with her even as it hurried after the boy. Ash looked amused ''I know how he feels. It's all good though, Goh can take of himself.''

''I'm not denying that...still...'' Chloe shook her head. ''...so about that rumor he mentioned...you've been here before-think it might be for real?''

Ash looked pensive as he thought back to their earlier conversation. Goh had regaled them with a tale about the area near Snowbelle City, the Winding Woods. Supposedly it earned the name because of its complex paths, where people often got lost. The strange part was that it was said to be a place were some pokemon entered and were never seen again.

Ash remembered the last time he came through the woods, after his disaster of a first battle with Wulfric. It was where he and Greninja learned more about the bond phenomenon. Greninja had stayed in Kalos to help Zygarde deal with the aftermath of Team Flare's plan.

He wondered how his old friend was doing now.

Mentally shaking himself, Ash answered Chloe's question ''...I did come around before but we never heard anything like this...we might just find out soon, huh?''

''I guess so...'' She concurred.

As they drew nearer to Snowbelle city, the trio agreed to stop there for now and get a room at the pokemon center before looking into the strange rumor. Whether it was true or not, they would be sticking around for a bit and Goh wanted to catch more pokemon anyway. They had plenty of time to kill.

Chloe shivered ''No wonder Ash warned us to bundle up. Is it just me or does the city feels even colder than the woods?''

''I got that feeling too but it really doesn't make sense...'' Goh tilted his head in confusion.

''It's because of the gym.''

They looked at Ash in surprise ''What do you mean? That makes even less sense!'' Goh stated.

''The gym leader uses ice type pokemon, they're all super tough. He's used to training in the cold. I remembering hearing that he set it up that way for his pokemon's sake.'' He explained.

''Sounds like he's really dedicated to his pokemon.'' Goh remarked.

''Yeah, Wulfric's great. I learned a bunch from battling him.'' Ash had a thought. ''Wonder if I can battle him again...''

''Hey, that's an idea. You never now, he might competing be in the Championships too. I mean Korrina and Lt. Surge were.'' The boy remarked.

Ash perked up ''You're right...''

''I'm not sure you can battle now.'' Chloe interjected confusing the pair, who noted that Pikachu was nodding to this. ''Look closer.''

It didn't take them long to realize what she was talking about. A man was walking away, having closed the gym down.

''Aw man...'' Ash trailed off. And just when he'd gotten excited too...

''So what now?'' Goh inquired.

''Well, I want to take a look around the city. It looks like a nice place-what about you two?'' Chloe tilted her head.

''I think I'll look into that rumor and start getting pokemon.'' Goh returned. ''Ash?''

''We didn't get around to seeing much of the city last time so I think I'll go with Chloe.'' The boy replied after a moment.

''All right, you guys want to meet up around here in, say about two hours?'' Goh offered, the two nodded back before all headed off.

''...You know, when you mentioned taking a look around this really wasn't what I had in mind.'' An exasperated Ash told Chloe, Pikachu patted his shoulder comfortingly while Yamper happily walked beside them.

By 'this', he meant shopping. Chloe happened to spot a few shops that interested her so she hurried up and took Ash and Pikachu along, much to their chagrin.

''Well, tough.'' Unlike Pikachu, Chloe wasn't the least bit sympathetic. ''You were singing a real different tune when I treated you guys for lunch earlier.'' Ash looked sheepish at this, making her roll her eyes.'' Besides, I didn't just get you in the shops to help me. Were you really just going to come all the way here and not even get something for your mom? That's thoughtless, you know.''

''...Okay, fair enough.'' He wasn't about to argue since he honestly did feel bad for not bringing anything back for his mom. Chloe had not only bought souvenirs for her own family but helped him choose as well, which given his complaining was actually gracious of her. Knowing Delia, she was sure to be delighted with the result.

Ash and Chloe made sure to put all what they purchased safely in the room they they'd gotten earlier at the pokemon center before leaving.

Chloe was looking around the streets in awe, a growing smile on her face ''It really is nice here...so peaceful.''

''Heh, yeah. Reminds me of Pallet Town.'' Ash mused.

''Vermillion's the exact opposite. I don't mind all the hustle and bustle but it does get annoying sometimes...'' Chloe trailed off. ''...Mom showed us pictures of Pallet Town before. We didn't really see much of it since Goh and I were only there for the camp back then but it looks like a beautiful place.''

''It sure is. You've gotta come over sometime, we'll show you around. I bet Yamper's going to love it, there's plenty of places for pokemon to play.'' The boy returned, grinning as Yamper gave a happy bark. ''You all could meet my other pokemon too.''

''If the ones we do know already are anything to go by, they must be a colorful bunch.'' Chloe remarked.

''You have no idea...'' Ash grinned. He was looking forward to that now.

The boy knew Chloe had been friends with Goh for years but it wasn't until recently that he got to know more about the girl. She was a lot more pleasant and fun to be with when one got her to open up to them. Not to mention kind and considerate too, as proven with their shopping trip. As much as he hated to admit it, he probably wouldn't have thought of getting anything for Delia if she hadn't reminded him to do it. He really did like hanging out with her. She was totally cute, just like he told Goh...

Chloe noticed an ice skating rink ''Oh, I haven't gone ice skating in a long time. You want to try, Ash?''

The boy looked at the building with interest ''...Sure, why not? I'm probably no good at it though...''

He paused upon noticing Raboot coming out of a store. ''...hey, what're you doing there?''

The pokemon responded by pointing back at the building. Goh came out moments later, smiling when he saw his friends ''Hey! We were just going over to wait for you guys. I bought some pokeballs and a couple of stuff for my family, guess you've been busy too, huh?''

''Yup, how about we head over to the woods now?'' Ash inquired.

The Winding Woods had received that name because of their complex paths which served to confuse many travelers. Hence why most exercised caution when traversing the area and why Goh and Chloe had made sure to mark the path they had taken to hopefully avoid getting lost.

Ash looked around with interest, the woods didn't seem too different from what he remembered of his last visit. Then again, he hadn't really paid much attention to what was around him at the time, after his first loss against Wulfric and all what happened around then so he couldn't judge.

They could see a few pokemon here and there like Noctowl, Amoonguss and Gothorita among others. There was even a Zoroark, Goh had immediately tried to catch it but to no avail. Oddly enough, the illusion pokemon had quickly vanished around then. Ash wondered if it was that sneaky or that this lent credence to the strange rumors.

''This is one confusing place. How do people find their way around here at all?'' Chloe wondered.

''Good question...'' Goh was really glad that they had at least tried to make sure they wouldn't get lost.

A sudden yelp made the group stop in their tracks, quickly looking around for the source. Yamper spotted it first, pointing the others to their far left in time to see a boy running towards the city, seeming panicked.

''Wh-why is this happening? It was supposed to be a chance...!'' He cried, his voice fading away as he vanished from their sight.

The group could only watch in utter confusion, having no idea what to make of this. Pikachu's ears twitched, hearing something nearby. He looked back to see a Magneton floating next to a Zoroark, a couple of Spritzee and a Wingull, all seemed rather upset as they glared in the boy's direction.

Just what was going on here?

Ash, Goh and Chloe quickly agreed that it was best to walk away from the group of wild pokemon, who had simply left shortly afterwards. They had no idea what was going on but that group was clearly hostile and there was no reason to approach it.

''Hah, I really thought we could find something interesting here.'' Goh sighed.

''As usual, you push things too far. All we had was rumors, there was no actual proof.'' Chloe reminded.

''But there has to be something going on with all those disappearances...''

In the end, all they had was conjecture though. After thinking it over a little more, they agreed to stay a little longer because Goh had been looking forward to catching more pokemon.

After spotting another Noctowl, the boy began trying to sneak up near a tree where the pokemon was perched.

But just as he was about to toss a pokeball, Noctowl tensed, glancing to its far right before flying away.

Goh blinked ''What just...?'' He quickly noticed Raboot's eyes narrowing as it looked in the same direction Noctowl had glanced at ''...Raboot, what's wrong?''

Pikachu and Yamper were similarly troubled, alerting their trainers that something was wrong. After a moment of thought, Ash walked in the direction they were all watching, finding a small clearing.

The first thing he and Pikachu saw were a few unconscious pokemon scattered about, the second were a Scrafty, a Liepard and a Fearow closing in on a Ditto, a couple of Gothorita and three Zorua. There was a Sudowoodo and an Ursaring apparently trying to shield the group but it was clearly wornout.

The Scrafty, Liepard and Fearow were in front of two men, all dressed in winter clothes and malicious expressions as they stared the pokemon down.

''Pathetic!'' One of them declared. ''Here I thought you could do more but if this is all you got, it was a waste of time. The wild pokemon in these woods are all really close, maybe we'll have you bring us some of your buds!''

Even wornout as they were, the pokemon appeared aggravated at the suggestion and it was clear that they had no intention of ever following through with it.

The second man sneered ''You don't have a choice. Maybe we can just make a quick buck with you useless weaklings, for all the good that would do.''

The Sudowoodo growled at this, it was about to launch an attack when an angry Ash intervened ''Stop right there!''

Everyone looked at the boy in surprise as he ran over with Pikachu, Goh and Raboot in tow. Chloe and Yamper followed them shortly, a part of the girl wanted to tell them off for recklessly jumping into this but she understood why the boys were upset. What those scumbags did aggravated her too, the poor pokemon didn't deserve this treatment.

''What do you brats want, huh?'' The first man demanded.

''You can't treat those pokemon like this!'' Goh stated.

''We just put those weaklings in their place-they're good for nothing.''

''That's not true!'' Ash retorted, incensed. ''You're not gonna get away with this!''

''Well, look at the wannabe heroes. Just try and stop us, you brats.'' The second man scowled. ''Scrafty, Dark Pulse!''

''Liepard, use Slash!'' His companion called.

''Pikachu, Thunderbolt!'' Ash called.

''Double Kick!'' Goh cried.

Raboot jumped to avoid Liepard's Slash before unleashing two swift kicks to its side that caused the pokemon to stagger. Pikachu's Thunderbolt soon overcame the Dark Pulse attack and sent Scrafty to its knees.

''Iron Tail!''

''Ember!''

Chloe smiled as the consecutive attacks hit home, sending both targets to the ground. The first scowled ''You want it that way? Fine! Fearow, they'll pay for interfering. Get the girl!''

The boys started, turning around as Yamper stepped in front of their companion, growling at Fearow.

Chloe tensed, she wanted to move out of the way but she quickly realized that she was just before two of the unconscious wild pokemon. If she moved than Fearow could easily hit them.

In that case...

Her eyes narrowed ''Yamper, jump and use Spark!''

As soon as Fearow was close enough, Yamper jumped and landed on its back, releasing a strong shock of electricity. As Fearow shrieked in pain, Chloe had her friend repeat the move before tackling the stunned flying type to the ground. A quick inspection revealed that Fearow was down and out as a result.

''All right, Chloe!'' Goh grinned.

''Yeah, nice going!'' Ash beamed.

The girl smiled back, turning to the two men as one of them cursed ''Useless little...'' He glared at the three. ''...don't start celebrating, brats. We won't just let you interfere!''

It turned out that Ursaring and Sudowoodo had used the time the trio's intervention bought to help their friends recover, using a few berries they had in tow. But before anyone knew it, he yelled at the three pokemon to get up and it seemed only Scrafty could manage it. Growling, he sent out a Cryogonal. Before the three knew it, the pokemon whipped out a powerful gust that caused a fierce gale. Ash and Chloe grabbed their pokemon to make sure they wouldn't be blown away, looking back in time to see the men ordering a Granbull they had just sent out along with Scrafty to attack. One of them called a command to Cryogonal, who whipped up a big wave of snow that forced the kids back.

When they could see again, the three were surprised to see that the men and their pokemon were gone.

''Wha...how did they...?'' Ash stared, blinking when Pikachu pointed him towards some footprints in the snow. So they had used the chance to escape...

His thoughts were cut off as he heard a rumbling sound from nearby. The ground was trembling, almost seeming as if there was an earthquake. The pokemon seemed alarmed though, Sudowoodo called out to the group, picking up one of its friends before gesturing them to hurry away.

''You want us to leave?'' Ash clarified, seeing it nod then. ''But...''

Goh cried out as he saw something that made him realize what those men done ''We have to! Look!''

He pointed ahead, in the distance was a big wave of snow that would soon close in on them. Those two and their pokemon had caused an avalanche.

Wasting no more time, the group quickly hurried along with the wild pokemon, all needing to get far away from here...

In all the chaos and panic around the situation, Ash, Goh and Chloe wound up seperated from each other.

Goh sighed, he wasn't sure he could've made it if a few of the wild pokemon hadn't decided to help. He hoped Ash and Chloe were okay. Where could they be?

''Hey, do you have any idea where the others are?'' He asked Sudowoodo, who shook its head. ''Great...urgh, if I get my hands on those jerks...what were they even thinking?!''

The boy continued searching for the rest of their group with Raboot and Sudowoodo in tow. It was around then that they came across a surprise.

''Well, what do we have here?'' A white haired man with grey eyes approached the three, followed by an Abomasnow.

Sudowoodo called out to him happily, something that didn't escape Goh. The man smiled ''Hey there, maybe you can explain what's going on here...''

''Sorry but that can wait, I need to find my friends. We got seperated because of the avalanche.'' Goh said quickly.

''I see. In that case, come along with me. We can help you find them.'' The man assured.

The boy perked up ''Really?''

''Sure, my name's Wulfric. I'd say few know these woods better than me.''

Chloe sighed in relief, glad that they had been able to escape the avalanche. ''Well, we made it...'' She looked back at Yamper. ''...are you okay?''

The little electric type barked and nodded, making her give a small smile as she added. ''It's a long shot but any chance you might be able to find one of the guys' scents?''

Yamper wasn't sure it could do that either after what just went down but they might as well give that a try. Thus, with the thought in mind, it nodded and proceeded to go sniffing the area and their surroundings carefully.

Chloe bit her lip as she watched her little friend. She couldn't believe things had gone this bad so quickly, those men really were terrible. Was this what it was like to be a trainer? To travel to all sorts of places, see so many things, experiencing dangers at every turn...

Really, she had just agreed to come with Ash and Goh just to try something new. To think it could have wound up like this. She didn't regret it though.

When she looked back at what happened since they came to Kalos, Chloe knew she wouldn't regret coming here. It definitely made things interesting and she felt closer to the boys, especially Ash.

If anything, the last few days had just showed her how there was more to the boy than meets the eye. At first, she'd just assumed he was a hothead who was really into pokemon battles but the more time passed, the more she saw she was wrong. He was really passionate about pokemon and something about that drive was endearing, she found that she liked watching him in that tournament. Not to mention, he had been really nice to her and he taught her a whole bunch back in the lab. Chloe found that she actually enjoyed spending time with him and it was fun to see him and his pokemon interact. The stories he told her and Goh about his travels were really interesting. Besides, he'd stood up for her earlier and...even thought she was always cute. Chloe could admit that he was good-looking himself...

She shook her head, what was she even doing?! This wasn't the time to start daydreaming!

Chloe looked around for Yamper, seeing that it was still trying to find a scent. She quietly sighed, well she knew it likely wouldn't have worked with the avalanche in all...

Just then, she caught a movement from the corner of her eye that made her turn. At her far left was a fast moving figure moving from tree to tree. It was too far for her to make out but she could've sworn it was carrying some pokemon...maybe it was helping those who were caught up in this mess?

Deciding not to waste anymore time on speculation, Chloe made to approach Yamper. Just then, the area she had been standing on shook, making her freeze out of surprise. She figured that her footing must have been far more shaky than it appeared as it soon fell apart, to her horror.

Chloe hadn't even realized she had screamed until she managed to grab a rock nearby to stop her fall. Yamper hurried over, alarmed at her predicament. But as things were, there wasn't much it could do. Chloe paled as she watched the pieces of rubble fall into the river far below, fear gripping her heart so strongly that she could barely breathe. She had to move-there was no way she could stay like this...

She tried to lift herself so that she could get to safety, to no avail. Chloe was a loss of what to do, wincing as she felt how cold the rocks were, her gloves having been damaged in the fall. What now?!

Yamper barked as loud as it could, hoping anyone near by would notice and come help. As much it wanted to get Chloe out of this, that just wasn't possible. Chloe shivered as a cold breeze blew by, knowing her strength was fading fast. She tried to find a way out of this but she couldn't hold on for much longer...

The worst happened moments later, her hand slipped as she was unable to hold on. Chloe cringed, unable to look.

Was this really it for her?

Just then, a hand grabbed hers, making the girl start and look up in surprise. Green eyes met dark brown as she registered that it was none other than Ash who had come to her rescue.

The boy's expression was a mixture of concern and determination ''I gotcha...'' And indeed he had, thankfully he was able to pull the girl up to safety.

Ash let out a breath once he steered them both away, their pokemon quickly coming along ''...barely made it, you okay?''

Chloe surprised him by wrapping her arms around him tightly, leaving him stunned. But then he noticed she was shaking and it sank in. Of course, she'd just been through a terrible shock. It would have been more worrying if she had taken that ordeal well.

He patted her back ''Hey, it's all right. Everything's fine now. Sorry you had to go through but remember we're all safe. You'll be just fine, I'll make sure of it.'' Ash kept a hand around her shoulders. ''Come on, let's get out of here.''

Chloe took comfort in his presence, his words being doing her a world of good ''...Okay.''

Goh quickly realized that Wulfric hadn't been boasting earlier-he really know his way around the Winding Woods very well. He had been able to steer them with ease and with his pokemon's help, they were able to check up on some of Sudowoodo's friends.

He paused, noticing that same fast moving figure going up ahead, holding the three Zorua as it vanished out of sight. ''What was that?''

''A friend. Don't worry, it's bringing them to safety.'' Wulfric returned.

''Well, okay...''

Abomasnow suddenly stopped, leaving the two curious. It poked its head to a route on the side before calling out to Wulfric, who walked over.

The others quickly followed them, which was when Goh spotted Ash and Pikachu leading Chloe and Yamper ahead ''Hey, guys!''

The four stopped, pleasantly surprised to see them too. Wulfric smiled ''Well, if it isn't Ash! It's been a long time.''

The boy in question smiled back ''It sure has! You were helping Goh?''

''Yeah, he told me what happened. Seems like you kids had a rough day.'' He noted with sympathy. ''But let's not stand and talk here, come on. There's something I think you'd like to see.''

They had assumed that the gym leader would take them back to Snowbelle city, only to be puzzled when he led them deeper into the woods instead. Wulfric merely grinned and told them to be patient, believing that they would want to see his surprise.

And what a surprise it was!

Before their eyes was a village. It was a lush, beautiful place full of various flora and fauna. A waterfall ran through the meadow under a bridge. There were few simple homes here and there along with vast berry fields. A number of pokemon were spread out through the village, doing various like playing or even just lazing about.

Ash's mouth fell ''Wow...''

''Quite a sight, eh?'' Wulfric smiled as he noted the trio's and their pokemon's awe at the sight. ''Welcome to the Pokemon Village.''

''It's amazing...'' Chloe trailed off, noting how a few of the pokemon smiled when they saw the gym leader. ''...have you known about this place for long?''

They stopped at a small meadow and Wulfric explained ''Yeah, I took it upon myself to help out the wild pokemon in these parts once I settled into being a gym leader. I wound up making enough friends here that they decided to show it to me too. I've been helping keeping an eye on things for them ever since.''

Ash began to smile ''That's great.''

''But how did this place come to be? I mean, is it isolated from the woods or something?'' Goh cocked his head.

''I never found out.'' Wulfric admitted. ''I'm fairly sure that it's been around for a long time though. A good number of those pokemon were mistreated or abandoned by their trainers. That's why they have a hard time dealing with humans.''

''That's awful...'' Ash frowned. He could never understand how people would do such a thing. Pokemon were their friends and companions, surely they deserved to be treated with care.

''They seem okay with us being here though.'' Goh remarked, wondering if the reason had to do with Wulfric.

''Because they know what you did earlier.'' The man informed. ''The pokemon here are very close to each other. Sudowoodo and the others assured them that it was fine so that's enough for them.'' The rock type in question caught their gazes and waved happily before walking ahead.

Chloe had a thought ''Wait a minute, those rumors...Mr. Wulfric, is this place why people say some of the pokemon who go into the Winding Woods just disappear?''

''Exactly.'' Wulfric replied. ''It's just that this place is a well-kept secret. Only me, Nurse Joy and the mayor know about it. We all agree it's best for those pokemons' sakes.''

''We'll keep it a secret too.'' Chloe promised, earning nods from the others.

Wulfric smiled ''Glad to hear it.''

''It all makes sense...'' Goh nodded. He could understand the pokemon wanting to make their homes here after their experiences. His eyes widened when he saw a familiar pokemon floating nearby. ''...hey, isn't that...?''

''Pika...'' Pikachu blinked, surprised as it recognized the Magneton they had seen earlier.

Wulfric glanced ''Ah, about that one...Goh mentioned the boy who was chased out of the woods. He was one of my recent challengers, he took his loss very badly and stormed out of the gym.''

Ash frowned as he connected the dots in his head ''Then, the reason the pokemon were so mad...''

The man nodded ''He abandoned Magneton. Plenty of the pokemon have dealt with this sort of problem, they would never take well to people like that...'' He paused, noticing something to his right that left them curious.

''Wulfric?''

''Ah, good timing.'' Wulfric stood. ''After what you kids did, I knew I could trust you to keep this place a secret. There's another reason I was sure you'd want to come. Ash, I bet you and Pikachu are definitely going to like my next surprise. It'll be just up ahead.''

He took the group to at the river leading to the waterfall, which was when they see a fast moving figure leaping nearby. It caused a splash that obscured its body from view momentarily.

''It's that pokemon from before!'' Goh recalled.

Ash blinked ''What kind of pokemon is it?''

The two were distracted when Wulfric called out to the new arrival, who turned towards them then.

''There's a certain pair here I thought you'd like to see.'' Wulfric informed, seeing the pokemon's eyes widen once it landed on the group, specifically a certain trainer from Pallet Town and his partner.

Ash and Pikachu were just as stunned. For they quickly recognized the newcomer, it was a blue frog like pokemon which had its tongue around it neck like a scarf. It had deep red eyes surrounded by black scales and a light blue shuriken was on its back.

''...Greninja?'' Ash found his voice after a few moments.

Chloe, Goh and their pokemon looked at the two in surprise, wondering how they knew the pokemon.

Pikachu smiled ''Pi Pika!'' It dashed towards the ninja pokemon, who bent to its level and they shared a high-five, happy to meet up after so long.

But that was nothing compared to Ash, who was grinning as he hugged the water starter. Greninja gladly returned the gesture, elated to see its old trainer again. Ash had a wide smile ''This is great! I didn't think I'd see you again!''

'''Again'?'' Goh echoed.

''Ah, you don't know? Greninja used to be Ash's pokemon.'' Wulfric informed, surprising them. ''A lot happened at the time and Greninja's powers were needed to help Kalos so Ash left it here. It traveled all over the region and recently, it decided to stay here.''

Goh looked back at the three with new understanding ''So that's why...''

Chloe began to smile, no wonder they were so happy. They had obviously been close before going on their separate paths. Well, given that it was one of Ash's pokemon, this didn't surprise her one bit.

Goh blinked ''Hold on, I thought Greninja were...'' He opened his pokedex and held it towards Greninja.

''Greninja, the ninja pokemon.'' It buzzed. ''It appears and vanishes with a ninja's grace. It toys with its enemies using swift movements, while slicing them with throwing stars of sharpest water.''

''Whoa...'' The boy trailed off, glancing at the pokemon again. ''...how come it looks so different though?''

Ash chuckled ''It's a long story.'' To Wulfric, he added. ''Thanks, I really appreciate you bringing us here.''

''Don't worry about it. Clemont and Professor Sycamore explained what happened with you and the others when you released Greninja after I told them how I ran into it here. I just figured it was about time you three meet up.''

The boy beamed and looked back at Greninja ''Great to see you again, buddy! How've you been?'' The pokemon smiled in return, patting Pikachu's head at it chittered happily to it. Though the starter did stop to cast a curious glance at Goh, Chloe and their pokemon, leading Ash to introduce both sides to the other.

They had decided to take Wulfric's suggestion to get some rest at the village before returning to Snowbelle City, letting their pokemon out to have fun too. Seeing how their pokemon were around them apparently made the wild pokemon feel better as they were far more relaxed with them afterwards.

Goh's lips twitched as he watched Ash's pokemon interact with Greninja. It was funny to see how bewildered the ninja pokemon was when the friendly Dragonite hugged him but over all, they were hitting off nicely. Riolu seemed amazed by the new pokemon while Mimey was clearly intrigued. On the other hand, Farfetch'd seemed interested in challenging it to a battle. All things considered, that really didn't surprise Goh.

He quickly noticed someone else watching the large group before them with interest, something that prompted to head over.

Sobble started as Goh picked it up, turning around to face its trainer as he spoke ''You wanna join them? Why don't you go ahead?'' The water type looked alarmed at the suggestion and quickly shook its head. ''You think Greninja's pretty cool too, right?''

Sobble nodded after a moment. The pokemon just seemed so strong and brave-it just felt awe-inspiring for the timid little water starter.

Goh grinned ''All right, leave it to me!''

Chloe stopped walking as she saw Goh take Sobble towards Ash and Greninja. It hadn't taken long to note how the first seemed almost star-struck by the ninja pokemon. She hoped the boy wouldn't get carried away and overwhelm Sobble.

Yamper was playing around with the three Zorua they had encountered earlier. It already seemed like the four were good friends. Chloe blinked as she felt something bump against her boot only to see that it was one of the Zorua, who blinked up at her. The girl smiled and picked the little dark type up, giving it a few scritches. Zorua grinned and gave her an affectionate nip in return. ''You three really are cute...''

Zorua licked her cheek before jumping out of her hold and hurrying to the others. Well, today may have wound up being one big mess but this definitely made up for it. Chloe was sure her father would love to see this place for himself, it was a shame she couldn't tell him about it. She felt glad that she had such a chance at the very least. Seeing the pokemon around these parts was interesting, this trip sure made for a unique experience after all.

When had she even begun to see pokemon differently? At one point, she thought befriending Yamper may have been the start but it wasn't that simple. Not really. No, Chloe's lips twitched as her eyes fell on the person responsible, Ash. It was thanks to him that she was getting a whole new perspective on pokemon.

Ash smiled in amusement as he watched Greninja talk to Sobble. From the latter's expression, his old friend seemed to be offering encouragement. It was really nice to see how those two got along already. Ash had a feeling that Greninja could be a really good teacher for Sobble.

He was curious as to how Greninja learned about this place, if either Squishy or his friend knew about it. Greninja had more or less confirmed that he had parted ways with the two legendary pokemon as they had finally been able to repair the damage done to the region by Team Flare. There was one question he wanted to ask the ninja pokemon now but he wasn't sure he could bring himself to say it.

''Ash?''

The boy started and turned around to see Chloe behind him, the girl tilting her head curiously ''What's wrong? You really spaced out there.''

''Oh, just thinking.'' He looked away awkwardly.

Chloe noted how he clearly didn't want to elaborate so she moved on ''This sure turned out to be some day, huh?''

''Tell me about it...''

''Well, you and dad were right. This sure wound up being one unique experience, I don't regret coming over.'' The girl admitted.

Ash's lips twitched ''That's nice to hear.''

She glanced at the pokemon nearby, looking amused ''Looks like someone's a big hit there.''

''Yeah, Greninja's a great friend. He mellowed out since we last met but I bet he'd fit in with them just fine.'' The boy stated.

''No kidding. You do realize we might be looking at Sobble's new role model, right?'' She inquired, making him chuckle. ''You really are something though...hah, I can't imagine doing it...'' At Ash's curious look, she added. ''...I can't imagine just giving Yamper up. Look at how things started with us, we've had our ups and downs but still...I don't think I could do that. Is that selfish of me?''

Ash began to smile ''It just shows you really care, Chloe. I'll admit, I hated leaving Greninja behind but it was needed more here.''

The girl nodded in understanding, thinking it showed how selfless Ash was ''And now?''

''That's...'' He faltered, that was exactly what he had been wondering about. Would the ninja pokemon want to be his pokemon again?

''You think it wouldn't want to?'' Chloe wondered.

''I'm not sure...'' Ash admitted. ''...it's just...it's been over two years. I didn't think it was right of me to expect Greninja to drop everything and come, you know?''

''I hear you.'' She returned. ''Still, it's all the more reason you need to find out, Ash. For both your sakes. You may not like the answer but it's not like you won't be friends anymore, right?''

''No way!'' He said at once. Moments later, he couldn't help but smile ''Thanks, Chloe.''

She appeared pleased ''You're welcome.'' The girl was about to leave but then paused and turned back. ''Oh, and...''

Ash stiffened as she chose the moment to kiss his cheek. Chloe also seemed embarrassed, but it looked kind of adorable ''...consider that thanks for before.''

They spent some more time in the village, getting some of the inhabitants to warm up to them in the process. Ash learned that Wulfric was actually participating in the World Championships. The man had even watched the tournament he had won the other day. The two agreed to have a rematch after they returned to Snowbelle, interested in seeing how far they had come after so long.

The gym leader was clearly a popular figure in the village as many of the pokemon held him in high regard. Ash could see why, the gym leader was a really nice guy and he cared for them well. He could appreciate how much trouble it took to keep an eye out on the area if they had people like the ones they had dealt with today show up.

Soon came the time to leave and with it, the important question Ash had been wrestling with for a while...

The boy looked back at the ninja pokemon, Pikachu spared him a concerned look as he spoke ''Greninja, we've gotta go. It was really great to see you again and...well, I was wondering if you want to come back with us?''

The pokemon appeared surprised at the question, glancing at Pikachu who chittered happily at it with a welcoming smile.

''Yeah, that'd be great!'' Goh added.

Ash felt nervous at the lack of response ''I get it if you don't want to...it's been this long and...'' He hated to say this but at the same time, it was only right...

''I wouldn't worry too much, Ash. Safe to say, Greninja's already made the choice.'' Wulfric stated with a grin.

The boy blinked and looked back at the pokemon in question, who nodded. It gained an expectant look in its eyes as it croaked a few times, giving a slow smile then as it held up a hand to Ash.

He caught on, smiling widely then ''All right!''

Ash held up a pokeball, which Greninja tapped then. It sucked the pokemon in and quickly dinged, not even shaking once. Pikachu cheered as Ash looked at the pokeball ''Welcome back, buddy.''

A while later, they were back at the pokemon center. Goh had taken the chance to talk to Chloe while Ash went to call Delia. ''So, what's going on with you two?''

She blinked ''What do you mean?''

''Oh come on, you and Ash barely have eyes for anyone else recently.'' He stated, making her stiffen. ''Don't give me that look. You were talking a whole lot back there. I'm not blind, it's obvious. You two hang around each other a whole lot, like back in the village.''

Frowning, Chloe looked away ''Don't exaggerate, it's no big deal. We weren't that bad...''

Goh snorted, clearly not believing her ''If you say so. How'd he get you even a little interested in pokemon anyway? I know I've had absolutely no luck there.''

''I guess he just...helped me connect to them.'' She admitted after a moment. ''He's passionate when it comes to pokemon, kind of like you. But he actually tried to understand how I felt about it so he just let me take things at my own pace.''

The boy held back a wince ''Oh...yeah, looking back, I did get kinda carried away, huh?''

Her lips twitched ''A little...'' She leaned back. ''...it's just...I don't know, I guess we wound up talking a whole bunch. Getting his perspective helped out too, most of his pokemon being that friendly was a nice bonus.''

''Heh, yeah I'll bet...''

''Oh, not to say your pokemon aren't nice too.'' Chloe added. ''It was interesting to see how different they all were together...even if Raboot's a big tsundere.''

Goh blinked before he burst out laughing ''That's so true! How didn't I see that before?''

Chloe took a moment to tell him a bit about her talks with their friend, leaving him amused ''Good to see you two getting along so well.'' He remarked at last. ''So you like him, right?''

''W-what?'' She stuttered, feeling her face grow warm.

''You like him?'' He repeated patiently. ''Come on, you're plenty happy around him and I saw those looks you were giving him before. He talks about you too, it's obvious he's glad you came along. Not sure what happened but he said you really helped him out before and he appreciated it.''

Chloe couldn't help but pleased at that, she had really thought much of their talk earlier but that was nice to hear.

Little did they know, that Ash's talk with his mother wound up leading in a similar direction...

Around the same time...

''Wow, that's great!'' Delia exclaimed when he finished telling her about Greninja while leaving out any mention of the Pokemon Village. ''I'm so happy for you three! It sounds like you're having quite a good time there.''

''Heh, yeah that's for sure.'' He returned, smiling back.

''So you're battling Wulfric again tomorrow?''

''Yup, around noon. I'm thinking maybe we can just take it easy now though. We've been training a whole bunch lately and I don't want to wear my pokemon out.'' Ash admitted.

Delia nodded ''That's good to hear-you don't have to rush. I know you're all invested in the Championships but you have to be careful, make sure you and your pokemon don't get burned out.''

''Haha, I know, I know.'' Ash assured. ''There's this ice rink me and Chloe want to check out tomorrow...''

''Ara, like a date?''

''W-wait, what?'' He uttered, now thrown for a loop.

''Well, it sounds like a nice idea and I know you two get along rather well...''

Ash held back a groan ''Yeah, because we're friends! Don't make it weird!''

She giggled ''Well, why not? Let's pretend for a moment that she did ask you out, would you turn her down?''

''Piiika?'' Pikachu grinned, also wanting to know.

''Oh, come on, you too?'' Ash huffed.

''Just humor us, Ash. Come on...'' Delia wheedled. ''...you were telling me how nice and caring Chloe was before...''

The boy decided that it was best to go along with this and spare himself anymore trouble ''Well, yeah she is...I don't know we just wound up talking the other day and I had fun hanging out with her back at the lab. It was good to have her around and it looks like she's really branching out. She gave me some good advice before...I do like spending time with her-I just don't know about a date and all, Mom.''

''It wouldn't be so bad, you'd just spend time together. Neither of you would have to go out of your way, you can be yourselves.'' Delia offered.

''...Why are you so invested in this anyway?''

''Oh, I was just reminiscing after you told me you were in Snowbelle.'' She beamed. ''Your father took me on a walk around Celadon City in winter. It was such a beautiful and romantic evening!''

Ash blinked, well that made sense. She just felt like taking a walk down memory lane.

''I knew I liked Chloe since we met. You'd be really cute together! Besides, all you mainly do in dates is just get to know each other more so I suppose my mind wandered...'' She trailed off.

Speaking of wandering minds...Ash suddenly remembered that kiss from earlier and had to hold back a blush. He knew it was to show gratitude for saving her. Chloe wouldn't do it only for that, right? Did she actually like him?

He thought back to recent events, how they learned more about one another. Chloe wasn't above teasing him but she could also be very supportive. He still remembered how she tried so hard to help Nami and her Milotic (then Feebas). And it had all been because she saw how hard the girl worked and wanted to do something for her because of it-Ash thought it said something about her caring nature.

Delia decided to help her son along ''You did mention spending plenty of time with her recently, Ash. How do you feel about that?''

He blinked but answered ''...Pretty good...she's a lot of fun. We were just hanging out before and it's like we never ran out of stuff to talk about.''

''Isn't that nice.'' Delia smiled. ''Hmm...let's say Chloe does actually get a boyfriend down the line, how would you feel about that?''

''That's...'' Ash's eyes widened. For some reason, it really didn't sit well with him. He probably wouldn't have felt comfortable admitting this to anyone but her. ''...I don't think I'd like that, Mom. Does that make me a lousy friend?''

Delia's smile widened ''Absolutely not-it just means you really care about her. I thought we should get that clear.'' Her tone turned amused as she continued. ''Did I ever tell you that your grandpa asked your dad something similar when it came to us?''

''Really? So Dad was confused about his feelings?''

''More or less, he was just bad at expressing himself sometimes. Your grandpa told me he had to sit down with him and talk about where he wanted to take our relationship.'' Delia recalled.

''Ohh...'' Ash blinked, so maybe he just took after his dad more than he knew? ''...well, it's effective, I'll give you that.''

She giggled ''Good to hear.''

''Thanks, Mom. I think I know what to do now.'' Ash returned.

The next day...

Chloe approached Ash, who had asked to talk to her privately a few minutes ago ''What is it?''

''Well, ah...'' He rubbed the back of his neck. ''...see, what happened yesterday was...''

The boy explained about his nightly conversation with Delia, leaving her with one question.

''...Is it really that obvious?''

Ash blinked, hearing her explain about her own talk with Goh last night. ''O-oh...''

''Yeah...'' Chloe fiddled with her skirt.

Silence reigned between them for a few moments until the former broke it ''Mom helped me realize a few things. I'm no good with that kind of stuff-you know dating and romance and all so I wasn't really sure about anything. But she basically made me look deep into how I feel about you.''

''And?'' Chloe prompted, nervous about the answer.

''I...thought about it a lot and...we had good times together and it's really nice hanging out with you.'' He started, still feeling awkward. ''I didn't even notice we were out on our own in the village because it was such a good time. You're compassionate and perceptive, keeping an eye out for those you care. It's nice how open-minded you're getting about Pokemon and I'm really glad I could see that. You're honest and fun to be with. I know you said you didn't think you could make a hard choice like leaving Yamper but I think you'd try to do the kind and right thing in the end-like you do with us.''

The girl's eyes widened, she couldn't help the warmth flooding her heart at these words. He thought of her that highly?

Chloe smiled ''...That might the nicest thing anyone ever said to me.'' She paused. ''Ash, you're impulsive and sometimes over the top but you're still one of the kindest people I've ever met. You actually helped me connect to pokemon in a way I didn't think was possible-even if you're that passionate, you still tried to understand how I feel. I really appreciate that. I like how you're brave and honest-also plenty of fun to be around with of course. There's definitely more to you than meets the eye and I'm glad for it.''

''So...'' The two said in tandem, blinking in surprise for a moment before smiling at one another.

''Well, I understand being confused-in a way, I was too. But...'' She stopped to give him another kiss on the cheek. ''...I know for a fact now, I like you.''

Ash grinned, feeling surprisingly giddy now as he hugged her ''I like you too.''

She beamed ''What do you say we take Mrs. Ketchum's idea and make visiting ice rink into a date for real?''

''I say it sounds like a top plan.''

With that settled, the two proceeded to fill Goh in and told him about their plans. Their friend offered his congratulations, however he wasn't above teasing them a little. He did encourage them to have a good time, though not without making Ash that he would treat Chloe well. That was one promise the boy planned on keeping.

Delia was right. It was just like they were hanging out but perhaps just a little more affectionate, which was fine by them. All in all, the two would later agree that they had an excellent time.

The visit to Kalos was full of surprises but Ash and Chloe were as happy as can be with the outcome. Chloe would look back happily on the day, one of the reasons being that she got her first kiss. Ash was the same, also finding it a memory to cherish.

And we're done!

Well, I hope it was good. Writing romance isn't exactly my strong suit-I recently got into reading some books to help me get a better idea of what it'd be like. I mean the romance in my other stories takes place over plenty of time and I've hardly gotten around to working on it, you know? I thought I'd try to challenge myself a little.

I hope I did the characters justice. I mean, I would've handled things differently if the pairing was for anyone other than Chloe but I think they could get along well depending on how things work out. I figure if anyone would know what it's like to deal with the expectations on her because of her dad, it'd be Gary. Way I see it, if anyone could really get her to connect to Pokemon, it'd be Ash. I always thought it was a shame they never showed the Pokemon Village in the anime, it could've made for interesting stuff.

I was torn between using Sinnoh or Kalos in the story, since they're both my favorite regions. When I wound up choosing Kalos, I figured I could try putting Greninja here. So-surprise? I've always wondered if they'd show Greninja or any of Ash's older pokemon like Pidgeot or Naganadel ever again in the anime, that would've been great. I just had this feeling that Greninja could make a cool mentor for Sobble.

Anywho, thanks for reading!
