CHAPTER 6

NEXT MORNING

Callie was woken up by the sound of Sofia giggling in the living room. It was nice to hear joy after the evening she had. She opened her eyes and stretched her arms up, allowing the air that she inhaled travel through her body and wake her cells up. Sofia was now screaming with joy and Callie's face formed a warm smile. If it hadn't been for Sofia, she would have been in a much darker place right now, she was sure of it, but their little girl helped her keep her head above the water no matter how much she felt like she was drowning. She got up and headed to the source of happiness that was filling the apartment. Sofia was clapping her hands happily, watching Carlos talk silly things with a teddy bear in his hand, while Lucia was preparing breakfast.

"Mommy!" Sofia exclaimed when she saw Callie appear at the door.

"Good morning family!" Callie said with a smile. "Hi, little munchkin," she added taking Sofia in her arms, "You are truly a sight for sore eyes this morning," Callie said giving Sofia a few kisses on the cheek. "We are going to daycare today, and later we will have lunch with mama, would you like that?"

"Mama! See mama!" Sofia repeated with excitement.

"Yes, sweetheart, we will go see mama," Callie said smiling broadly and put Sofia back into her chair. She walked over to Lucia and poured herself a cup of coffee.

"Thank you mom for doing all this, and dad you two have really helped me so much, I would be falling apart without you here."

"Mija, we are happy to help," Carlos replied before he turned towards Sofia again.

"How are you feeling, mija?" Lucia asked, worry obvious in her eyes.

"I'm okay, I broke down last night but now I feel much lighter after a good cry," Callie explained taking a sip of her coffee.

"Good, that's good," Lucia nodded her head. "You know you don't have to take Sofia to daycare, we can look after her."

"I know but I think it's important she starts going back to her routine, we were going to daycare every morning before this happened and it's good for her to spend time with other kids, and during lunch I'm going to take her to see Arizona again."

"Okay, sure," Lucia nodded her head. "Well if you need anything let us know."

"Thanks mom, I'll go take a shower and get ready for work," Callie said before she took a big gulp of coffee and headed towards the bathroom.

Arizona was sitting in bed holding a bunch of hospital papers in her hands. She was reading through and signing some of them. Suddenly she caught something at the bottom of the page and looked at it with a puzzled expression on her face. She went through more papers looking for the same information and when she found another paper with the same info, she again looked at it with surprise.

"Good morning!" Callie greeted as she entered the room. "Sofia is upstairs in daycare so we can have a lunch date today," she explained and realizing her own words she quickly added, "I mean I can bring her down here later and we can have lunch together."

"Good morning, that will be great, thank you!" Arizona said a bit absentmindedly and then lifted her head. "Your name is Calliope?"

Callie stopped in her tracks and opened her mouth taken by surprise by the sudden question. "Umm, yeees..." she dragged her reply wondering how Arizona found out about her full name.

Arizona lifted the hospital papers, "Your full name is listed as my emergency contact."

"Ah, okay," Callie nodded her head.

"But, why isn't your full name on our wedding ring then? It's such a beautiful name," Arizona said, her face still giving out complete confusion.

Callie's face formed a smile as she felt like her heart was smiling broadly in her chest as well, She still loves my real name even though she doesn't remember she actually prefers it…

"What?" Arizona asked observing the smile covering Callie's face.

"You are the only one I like to hear pronouncing my full name."

Arizona's expression didn't change as she was still puzzled by the sudden discovery.

"I was teased a lot about this name in school, so I don't really like it, only when you say it…, it's different and sounds like music to my ears…"

Arizona lowered her head and smiled, trying not to make it obvious but Callie caught the smile and felt happy she noticed it.

"So, the wedding ring?" Arizona asked.

Callie laughed nervously, "Well, we actually had a slight argument about that, I didn't feel comfortable having my full name there… I mean a wedding ring is supposed to stay like that forever, I just… Callie feels more natural to me, even though I love it when you call me Calliope but only because you add a certain special vibe to it, but if I look at it and read it, in my head it just doesn't sound the same, and I thought Callie and Arizona has a nicer ring to it than Calliope and Arizona."

"Hmmm… I disagree… I think Calliope and Arizona makes it even more special…" Arizona stated as she took the ring into her hand.

"That's exactly what you said that day when we were talking about this," Callie whispered and smiled.

"I did?" Arizona asked in awe.

Callie nodded her head as she took a few steps closer.

"So how come I didn't win the argument?" Arizona asked making Callie laugh out loud.

"You almost did, but we wanted to put the date as well and with my full name it couldn't fit in."

"There's a date?" Arizona asked now even more surprised, "I know I had a brain bleed but my vision hasn't been compromised."

Callie laughed out loud, "You have to catch the correct light for it to be visible," she said and leaned forward on Arizona's right side to get the perfect light angle on the ring.

The room around Arizona started to spin as she felt Callie's body near her and Callie's fingers touching her own. Callie's face was so close and she caught herself wanting to trail her fingers along Callie's jaw.

"There it is," she heard Callie exclaim and took a breath to steady herself. She leaned to the right, even closer to Callie and felt her heart skip a beat before speeding up its rhythm. Callie suddenly became aware of the closeness of Arizona's body and felt the heat rush through her body.

"Oh, it's beautiful…" Arizona stated in awe. "May 5, 2011," she read, "well we could have had only the numbers and it would have fit."

"Yeah, but it looks more beautiful with the month written in letters, so we made a compromise."

"Hmm," Arizona grumbled, "You mean I let you win the argument," she said, a slight protest evident in her voice.

Callie laughed wholeheartedly causing Arizona to turn her head and look at Callie.

Arizona's eyes travelled to Callie's lips and back up to Callie's eyes and she leaned even closer wanting to let her lips touch Callie's when a sudden noise from the hallway startled them and they pulled apart.

"Dr. Kepner! Watch where you are going!" they heard Miranda shout before she appeared at the door.

"Good morning, how is our star peds surgeon doing?" Bailey asked with a broad smile on her face.

Arizona smiled back at her, "I'm doing great!"

"Wonderful! I spoke to Amelia and we want to do more tests on your medical procedures memory, we want to see if last night was an exception or if your brain is really functioning precariously when medicine is concerned."

"Last night?" Callie repeated questioningly.

"Oh, I was going to tell you all about it," Arizona started, excitement evident in her voice. "Alex stopped by last night, and he asked me to help bounce some ideas about a case."

Miranda cut in, "I wasn't gonna allow it but then I let them test it for one case and she was brilliant, all her ideas were viable, her brain worked incredibly well, the connections she had all made sense…" she explained with excitement.

"Wow, that's amazing!" Callie exclaimed managing to hide the disappointment she felt in her heart. She remembers all about surgical procedures but she doesn't remember me or Sofia, she thought.

"Yes, amazing! Amelia and Alex will be down here soon and we will do more tests. This is really exciting Arizona, if you continue like this we could have you back to work as soon as you feel fit physically."

"Yay!" Arizona replied happily, a big grin covering her face.

Callie felt a wave of joy rush through her body but also sadness found its way in, and she felt her eyes get watery. "That's great," she said trying to add excitement to her voice to cover for the tears that threatened to come out. She cleared her throat and spoke again.

"Okay so I have a meeting with Derek to go through our plan again, I'll come back later…" she said and quickly left the room.

Argh, why am I so emotional this morning… she asked in her head while walking along the hallway. No, I will not cry again, no more tears…, she thought as she shook her head to push the tears away and headed to x-ray viewing room with determination.

"What's wrong?" Derek asked when he saw her.

"Nothing's wrong!" Callie said. "How's your hand?"

Derek observed her for a few seconds, "Callie... what's wrong?" he asked again.

"Nothing... I'm just…," she sighed heavily. "It's a roller coaster…, everything that's happening… it's just a freaking roller coaster of emotions… last night I broke down in tears, this morning I was so happy first with giggly Sofia and then because Arizona really loves my full name, you know this I don't remember you version of her loves my full name too... it made me happy… and now I've found out she remembers all about medical procedures, so she remembers everything about medicine but doesn't remember me, her wife... and it made me feel sad… isn't love supposed to be more important than the career... I just wish she would remember me and Sofia, and not all the medical stuff so well…"

Derek shook his head, "You don't really mean that, we are surgeons, it's our life and our air. Would you really prefer her to remember you but not remember being a surgeon? You fell in love with the brilliant surgeon Callie, what kind of a person would she be if she didn't remember she was a surgeon? She wouldn't be the person you fell in love with… She can still fall in love with you, but if she didn't remember medical procedures she would never be able to be a surgeon again, I mean sure she could go back to med school but what would be the chances of that happening?"

Callie closed her eyes and exhaled heavily through pursed lips, "Right, you are absolutely right," she said as she ran her hand through her hair. "It's just so damn hard…"

"I can imagine, but focus on the good stuff, it's amazing that she remembers the procedures, do you know how many people I operated on who didn't remember anything about their life after a brain trauma? Absolutely nothing! The fact that she remembers such a huge part of her life is a reason to celebrate, so be happy Torres, you at least have the surgical Arizona back."

Callie smiled, "Thank you, yes you are right, it is a reason to celebrate! Since when have you become the pep talker?"

Derek laughed, "Since I have too much time to ponder about life and its meanings," he said lifting his bandaged hand up.

Callie chuckled and sat down, "Okay, let's work on our plan to fix that surgical hand of yours!"

When it was time for lunch Callie went to cafeteria to get some food and went upstairs to pick up Sofia. Arizona was already eagerly waiting for them to show up. Callie had only stayed shortly in the morning and she had so many things she wanted to tell her, and ask her as well after she left her room so suddenly, but most of all she was excited to see Sofia again. When Callie entered with Sofia, Arizona smiled broadly as Sofia also squeaked with happiness. Callie placed Sofia into Arizona's arms and watched the joy radiate from their daughter. She noticed Arizona's face show happiness as well.

"Hi baby girl, oh it's so nice to see you," Arizona said as she caressed Sofia's cheek while Sofia moved closer and placed her little arms around Arizona's neck.

"Mama!" she screamed happily and Arizona wrapped her arms around the tiny body.

"Oh, you're like a little ball of joy, aren't you?"

"Yeah, normally she is," Callie agreed with a smile. "So how did the memory test go?"

"It went really well, Dr. Bailey thinks I could get back to work really soon, I just need to recover physically."

"That's really great Arizona," Callie said a truly happy smile covering her face this time.

Arizona observed her for a second, "So what happened earlier today?" she asked without any hesitation.

Callie was taken aback, she wasn't expecting Arizona to ask about her abrupt exit from the room, she had hoped she didn't notice anything weird about it.

"When?" Callie asked trying to give herself time to think about what to say.

"This morning, you left abruptly when Dr. Bailey mentioned I could go back to work really soon."

"Nothing happened, I simply remembered that I had to meet Derek and I was running late," Callie said extending her arm to caress Sofia's cheek hoping to make Arizona quit the subject. Sofia turned to Callie and stretched out her arms.

"Down…" she said and Callie took her into her arms.

"Would you like to go down a bit sweetheart? Okay, let's put you down," she said and placed Sofia on the floor.

"Is that a good idea?" Arizona asked.

"What?"

"Putting her on the hospital floor."

"Yeah, of course, come on, have you noticed how many times they clean this floor, she'll be fine," Callie said with a smile.

Arizona laughed and watched Sofia crawl around the room.

"Are we normally honest with each other?" Arizona asked and looked at Callie.

"Umm, what do you mean?" Callie asked lifting her eyes to meet Arizona's.

"You are not telling me what was wrong this morning and I can tell something was wrong, I saw your look and your body language, and your body language right now is telling me that something is up as well."

Callie laughed nervously, "How can you tell when you don't really remember me?"

Arizona smiled, "I guess my body does remember you…" she said as she continued to look intently at Callie.

"Geez, you're not gonna let this go, are you?" Callie said through laughter trying to mask the nervousness she felt.

Arizona smiled, "Nope."

Callie chuckled and shook her head, "Okay fine, I had a moment when I felt happy that you remember all the medical stuff but I also felt sad because it hurts that you remember all of that and don't remember me or Sofia…" she said as her voice lowered finishing the sentence.

"Oh…" Arizona let out a surprising gasp. "Right…"

"I'm sorry, it doesn't seem fair that I wasn't over the moon happy for you, but now I am, I really truly am," she explained with a broad smile. "Derek helped me realize what a great news it is, it's just… in that moment… I just felt overwhelmed by all sorts of emotions… the last few days have really been a roller coaster of emotions for me, and I'm still trying to figure everything out."

"Callie, it's fine, you don't have to apologize, I can only imagine how hard this must be for you, and I am in awe of how well you are taking it."

Callie chuckled, "Well I wasn't taking it that well last night in the bathtub when I fell apart…" Callie said and immediately felt uncomfortable that she shared something so intimate.

Arizona's eyes showed a shade of sadness but in a second she decided to change the mood of the conversation. "Oh, you relaxed in the bathtub, admit it, you only did because you want me to rub your back next time!" she joked and made Callie laugh out loud.

At that moment Sofia came closer to Callie's chair and started getting up holding on to Callie's legs.

"Oh, she has never done this before!" Callie said with excitement as Sofia got on her feet slowly.

A cheer of happiness filled the room as both Callie and Arizona clapped their hands.

"I'm so glad I get to witness this moment," Arizona said with joy as Callie took Sofia in her lap.

"Me too," Callie said and kissed Sofia's head.

"We should start eating because I have to go meet Shepherd again."

"Okay," Arizona agreed, "and you know what, I need you to explain more about all these people that I'm supposed to know, because when you say Shepherd I never know if you are talking about my doctor or your patient."

Callie laughed out loud and gave Arizona one of the food containers. She opened another one and gave Sofia some food before she took some as well.

"Okay, so Derek Shepherd who is my patient is head of neuro at our hospital, his sister Amelia is also a neuro surgeon, she works in LA but Derek called her to Boise to come operate on you."

"Okay, so we didn't know her before all this happened?"

"We didn't, I met her the night she operated on you."

"Okay, and she is now sticking around here because Derek can't operate yet?"

"Exactly, and he is married to Meredith Grey, she was also in the plane crash with you."

"Grey? Is she related to the famous Ellis Grey?"

"Yep, Meredith is her daughter."

"Oh wow."

"Yeah."

"So who is a better neuro surgeon, Amelia or Derek?" Arizona asked in a casual tone.

Callie chuckled softly, "Derek has more experience but I think Amelia is one of those brilliant surgeons with crazy ideas that she actually manages to pull off, you know."

"Be careful that Derek doesn't hear you say this," Arizona teased.

"Oh I think he already knows it too," Callie said and winked at Arizona.

"Okay, then there's Mark, I already know enough about him…"

Callie laughed out loud, "Give him a chance, he really has a kind heart."

"Have I had issues with him being Sofia's father?"

Callie scoffed lightly, "Indeed you have, in the beginning, but I think he has grown on you over the time."

"Hmm…"

"He's really great with Sofia, and lately you started liking him more. There was never anything romantic between me and him, it was purely physical and he is totally in love with Lexie."

"She's the one who is still recovering, right?"

Callie nodded her head sadly, "She was in worse state than you… I sometimes think she's alive only because Mark wouldn't let her die. He hasn't left her side since it happened. Only briefly when he was unconscious in his hospital room, but as soon as he woke up he wanted to be with her. Her recovery is going slow but yesterday they finally took her off the vent, she's breathing on her own. Oh and she is Meredith's sister."

"Okay, I might not manage to remember all this," Arizona commented.

Callie laughed, "It's fine, I can explain it again."

"There was someone else you were mentioning…"

"Cristina Yang, she's a brilliant cardio resident, very promising and crazily talented, she left hospital a few days ago, she had some kind of a psychotic breakdown after the crash, we hope she will come back to work soon."

Arizona nodded her head, suddenly she felt anxious hearing that the crash had such a strong effect on one of them and she wondered what happened in that crash to cause such a reaction.

Callie noticed that Arizona became distant all of a sudden and decided to change the subject. "So tell me about last night, when you brain stormed with Alex."

"Oh I really like him you know, it was like he knew I needed to feel like a surgeon again and it felt so good that I was able to help, I felt like myself again."

Callie smiled, "That's great! Will he be stopping by again?"

"Yes, he wants me to help him out, he's really been holding the peds department together."

"Karev is really good, you have trained him really well and he is great with kids, you should be proud of him, he's your creation."

"Really?"

"Yep, you taught him everything he knows."

Arizona smiled, "That's nice to know."

Callie smiled back and closed her food container.

"Okay, I have really enjoyed this lunch with you but I have to go meet Derek."

"I really enjoyed it too," Arizona replied with a smile.

Callie got up and turned to Sofia, "Do you want to give mama a kiss goodbye?" she asked.

"Yes," Sofia replied and started moving her body towards Arizona. Callie placed her close to Arizona's cheek and Sofia gave her a kiss and turned her own cheek to Arizona.

Arizona laughed out loud and kissed Sofia's cheek.

"She always expects one in return?"

"Yep," Callie replied through a chuckle.

"That's cute and hilarious. Who taught her that?"

"Mark," Callie said and rolled her eyes.

"Oh okay, I like him a bit more now," Arizona said and made Callie laugh.

"Say bye mama," Callie spoke and moved Sofia's hand in a wave.

Arizona waved at Sofia and smiled at them as they exited the room. A smile wouldn't leave her face for a few minutes afterwards as she felt calm and happy about the nice lunch they had. Walking down the hallways with Sofia in her arms Callie felt the same as a big grin lingered on her face as well.

Over the next few days Arizona's days consisted of practicing getting up and taking steps in her hospital room. There was always a resident by her side and Amelia observing the progress. She still couldn't walk on her own but she could walk over to the bathroom while holding onto things. Callie stopped by whenever she could, and they had lulled into feeling more comfortable with one another. Callie's parents had gone back to Miami so Sofia was coming to daycare every day and they had lunches together with Arizona. Callie was focused on preparing for Derek's surgery while Arizona was focused on her recovery.

It was Thursday afternoon when they tested walking along the hallway and Arizona managed to do two whole rounds holding onto a resident.

"That is amazing, Arizona! Well done!" Amelia said clapping her hands.

"I could do more, let's do more!" Arizona said with enthusiasm.

"Umm, let's not overdo it, your leg will start hurting and you don't want to confine yourself to bed for a few days because you overdid it, have patience, this is great, but you rest until tomorrow, okay?"

"Umhp… fine," Arizona agreed reluctantly.

The next day Arizona's parents came for a visit in the morning, so she did her morning exercise with them and then after lunch Callie stopped by.

"Hey, how was your morning exercise?" Callie asked when she entered the room.

"It was great, I managed to do a few steps alone."

"Oh that's amazing!" Callie said and smiled.

"I was actually hoping someone would show up so that I can go for a walk again, do you want to take a stroll with me?"

"Of course, I'd love to," Callie said with a big grin as she came closer to Arizona's bed.

"Great!" Arizona said and slowly sat up in bed. She put her slippers on and slowly got up. Callie offered her right arm and Arizona wrapped her own arm around it.

"Lead the way," Callie said with a smile as her head entered a state of daze having Arizona's body so close to her.

"We'll walk to the end of the corridor and then come back," Arizona explained and felt her heart skip a beat when Callie put her left hand on Arizona's forearm.

"Okay, great," Callie said and smiled.

"So, how's the surgery plan going?" Arizona asked as they started walking slowly.

"I think we are ready, we're talking Tuesday, if all goes well with his pre-op, Tuesday is the day."

"Wow, are you excited?"

"Umm, more like nervous a bit…"

"Why?"

"Because it's Derek Shepherd…"

"So what? He's just another human being," Arizona commented casually.

Callie laughed out loud, "Right now I am so happy you don't remember him because this comment is exactly what I needed."

Arizona smiled as she felt her body react to the sound of Callie's laughter, "Good, I'm glad. Are your parents happy to be back to Miami?"

"No," Callie said with a chuckle, "they are already missing Sofia, they call her every day and are already talking about coming back soon. It was really nice to have them here, I don't know if I would have been able to go through everything alone… and my mom… she wasn't very supportive when we were getting married, but now it was really nice to have her support…"

"Oh, really? Your mom didn't like me?"

Callie laughed, "It wasn't about you, she was too religious to accept our gay marriage."

"Oh… my parents have always been supportive, I can't even imagine what it must have been like for you."

"Well, it wasn't easy but you helped me through it."

"I did?"

Callie nodded her head and Arizona smiled.

"Let's do another round," she added as they came back to her room.

"Are you sure?" Callie asked, worried a bit.

"Yeah, yesterday I did one round in the morning and two rounds in the afternoon, this morning I did two rounds so I want to try two rounds now as well."

"Hmmm, you shouldn't be your own doctor you know," Callie said not allowing Arizona to move again.

"Okay, fine, you can be my doctor, can my leg take another round?"

"Does it hurt?" Callie asked.

"Very little, and I really feel like walking a bit more."

Callie sighed, "Okay, one more round and then you are going back to bed."

"Okay," Arizona agreed with a smile and moved just an inch closer to Callie's body, wishing for more contact.

Callie's breath got caught in her throat and she felt her heart start pumping faster when she heard Arizona ask in a bubbly voice.

"Will you bring Sofia over during the weekend, I'd really like to see her again."

"Of course, we can stop by tomorrow and spend some time with you."

Arizona smiled, "Great! So is Lexie doing better?" she asked.

"Oh yes, she has started recovering really well, and Cristina is doing a lot better too, she's actually going to Minnesota."

"Oh wow, why?"

"I think she just wants to get away from here for a bit, a lot has happened in this hospital, I think she just wants a bit of a fresh change."

"Hmm, is it hard to have so many things change suddenly?"

"Uff, yeah it was really hard in the beginning but you get used to it with time…"

"Right…" Arizona said and stopped for a second.

"What's wrong?" Callie asked with worry.

"My leg has just started hurting a bit more…"

Callie sighed, "Why did I let you get away with another round!?"

"Well we are not far away from my room so let's just turn around and go back, and we need to test these things, how else will I know how much I can take…"

"Okay, lean onto me and we will walk back slowly."

"Okay," Arizona whispered as she got even closer to Callie's body causing both of them to have a more shallow breath but making sure to hide it from one another.

When they reached the room, Callie helped Arizona get back into bed. "I should take a look at your leg."

"Okay," Arizona nodded her head as she observed Callie's face.

Callie noticed Arizona's gaze and when their eyes met she felt the room spin around her. She cleared her throat.

"Has this happened before?"

"Umm, no, but this is the first time I tried a double walk in the afternoon, and maybe it's too soon, because normally we would walk a bit later in the afternoon."

Callie's face formed a stern look, "Arizona! Of course it's too soon! And you know that!"

"Well, I just wanted to take a walk with you…"

Callie shook her head in disapproval even though she felt happy inside. "Well you could have said so and I would have come back later to take a walk with you… Okay, does this hurt?" she asked as she touched Arizona's left thigh.

"Umm, a little bit yes, I mean it's not bad, it just hurts a bit…"

"Okay, let me massage it for a bit but you shouldn't take any more long walks today."

"Okay," Arizona whispered as she gasped at the touch of Callie's hand.

"Does it hurt?" Callie asked.

"No… it's really pleasant," Arizona managed to utter as all sorts of feelings rushed through her body while Callie's fingers massaged her thigh.

Callie noticed Arizona's reaction and her own body soon followed, her head was in a mist suddenly and she tried to get herself out of it but when she felt Arizona's fingers on her hand she got lost in the moment even more.

She slowly moved her head and met Arizona's eyes and for a few seconds nothing else existed, the world disappeared, it was just the two of them, a set of ocean blue eyes staring into her own brown ones, having a conversation of their own, as emotions ran through their bodies.

"Callie…" Arizona whispered and Callie looked down to Arizona's lips and saw them move closer. She felt like she was dreaming as Arizona's lips got closer and closer like in slow motion but then suddenly pulled away when they both heard a voice from outside the room.

"Okay, I'll be right there," they heard Amelia say before she entered the room.

"Hey, you two, I've got some good news for you!"

Callie cleared her throat and quickly composed herself.

"Oh, is something wrong with her leg?" Amelia asked when she saw Arizona's bandage was taken off.

"I felt a bit of pain… we took a walk and it started hurting after round two."

"Arizona! It was too early for walking again, we normally do it after 4pm!" Amelia warned.

"Well, I just wanted to take a walk, and now I know that I have to take longer breaks between the walks."

"Hmmm, well now I am not so sure anymore that you should go home," Amelia said as she crossed her arms.

"What!?" Callie asked in surprise.

Arizona stared at Amelia as a rush of panic flooded her body.

"I came here to tell you that we can release you Arizona, this evening, but now I am not so sure that's a good idea anymore."

Callie smiled, she felt her heart skip a beat, Arizona would come home...

"Home…" Arizona whispered.

Callie noticed a distant look on Arizona's face and her heart immediately sank, Home doesn't mean the same to Arizona now…, she doesn't know her home...
