Chapter 1: A dream?
Sonic was glad to finally be back home after so long. He could hardly believe it. After a whole year of being away from his planet, the blue hedgehog had come to accept that he and his friends would spend the rest of their lives in the human world, Earth. But because of them being there and each time he used the Chaos Emeralds to become Super Sonic, it proved to be too dangerous for both worlds as they would merge, and Time would've been destroyed.
Thus they and their enemy Eggman had no choice but to build a machine to finally return home. All except Sonic had stepped through, as Chris, his human best friend who helped him so much, refused to let him leave and shut down the machine to keep him forever since the twelve year old didn't want him to go, didn't want to let him go, didn't care about the teenager's freedom or what would happen to the world.
But they had talked when Chris has took him away and ran away, only for Sonic, understanding and not angry as he felt the same way, to help him realize his selfishness in forcing him to stay on Earth forever, realizing that it would cost both worlds Time itself, and luckily Sonic had the Chaos Emeralds with him. But they did have their final run together, before the blue hedgehog transformed into Super Sonic to make his way home.
It had been a long journey, but at least it took only a week given the time difference, but he finally made it back to his home world, and had easily beaten Eggman who had come up with another taking over the world plot while battling Tails who did such a good job. After sending the evil scientist away for the time being, Sonic gave a quick wave to his best friend as he missed the two-tailed fox cub who was like a little brother he never had, before flying his way over his home land, having caught sight of Knuckles and Rouge, taking in the familiar sights that actually brought him to tears.
'I can't believe I'm finally home...it's been so long.' Sonic had thought to himself before landing in front of his house, his Super form dimissing itself and the Chaos Emeralds scattering across Mobius for the first time in ages instead of Earth.
He was then greeted by Amy, who was angry at him at first which scared the blue hedgehog as he wondered why she was furious. But when she explained how he took so long and was being rendered to tears, Sonic had realized she had been worried sick when he hadn't entered the Porthole due to Chris having refused to let him leave out of fear of his life going back to before the blue hedgehog's arrival.
Sonic had felt bad for making her worry, and he was really relieved to see her again. While he still wasn't took keen on dates and such, he had felt himself grow closer to Amy, as the pink hedgehog had helped him a lot, cared for him, loved him with all of her heart...In that moment he wanted to comfort her, to let her know that he was here to stay. He missed her so much.
So he picked up a white rose, bend down in front of her sitting form as she cried, and held it out to her with a bright smile. It was then that Sonic knew right there and then that he loved her so much.
"Don't worry. I'm not goin' anywhere." Sonic reassured with a wide smile and a wink.
Amy's crying softened, and she saw the truth in his eyes. Overwhelmed by his kindness, his love, his reassurance, and his gift to her, the beautiful rose which fitted her last name. The pink hedgehog then jumped onto him, her arms around his shoulder as she cried in happiness, nearly knocking him over as he cringed, but smiled and laughed as he didn't mind this at all for once.
"Oh, Sonic!" Amy sobbed, crying on his shoulder as her tears dampened his fur.
"C'mon, Amy. It's okay. I'm here. Don't cry." He told her, even though she kept on repeating his name over and over.
Yet, strangely enough, Sonic felt a bit lightheaded, the sun's rays brightening up that it made him close his eyes to avoid in going blind as his vision turned white for some reason...
The sound of something sparking filled his ears, like cables having been broken, and somehow the world began to come back to the blue hedgehog.
'W-wha...?' Sonic thought, groggily, as he felt as though he'd been hit hard by some explosion, feeling dizzy and disoriented. As he began to come to, almost like he'd been in some sort of dream, Sonic found that he was lying on his back on a cold, steel floor, it was twilight and beginning to brighten.
As he opened his eyes slowly, the first thing he saw was the sky, in a hue of navy blue and purple, slowly turning pink. What alarmed him however, was that there was a hole in the ceiling of...Dr. Eggman's base? An awfully too familiar one at that. It was cracked open as though there'd been some kind of explosion.
Gasping as awareness fully brought him awake, Sonic jolted up into a sitting position, confusion and shock onto his expression. He looked all around him and saw that there was a huge mess, debries around him, the building of his enemy's base in ruins almost recently, if not overnight...the familiar device which was now a broken piece of junk having been on fire before it died out.
"Eggman's Chaos Emerald machine...?" Sonic whispered to himself, remembering how that very thing, Decoe, Bocoe and Bokkun had caused Chaos Control to act up on it's own and brought them, their creator, Sonic and his friends to Earth in the first place...yet it looked like time hardly passed at all, save for the early morning beginning to rise.
The last thing he remembered was comforting Amy shortly after he made it home. So why was he here? Unless...
The sound of someone sniffling and groaning from his left got his attention and as Sonic looked, to his shock, worry and further confusion, was Cream and Cheese, who had just woken up, still inside the capsule they had been trapped in since the beginning but thankfully still alive, and the glass had made a hole that was only large enough for the Chao to fit through, so it was easy for the blue hedgehog to be able to get them out.
More groans were heard, and as Sonic looked to his left, he found that Eggman and his stupid robots were lying on the floor half way across the room, crippled and injured, but also alive. In front of the bewildered blue hedgehog was the X Tornado, how it was originally designed before Tails and Chuck upgraded it, with the two-tailed fox and Amy both inside the cockpit unconscious, and finally, Knuckles, slumped against the wall across the room and comically dazed. None the less, they were all still alive.
"W-what's going on? What happened?" Sonic asked himself, feeling confused and rather frightened. Was this some kind of dream? Or...
Did everything he, his friends, and enemies had been through on Earth, making friends with Chris, his family, other human friends, the dangers and encounters with everything in the human world, Tikal, Chaos, Shadow, the merging between the two worlds...never happen? Had Sonic the Hedgehog been unconscious and having dreamt up everything to the point of the dream having a bittersweet ending?
Shaking his head to calm himself down and deciding to worry about his dilemma later, Sonic turned his attention to the more important matters. Like saving Cream and Cheese, waking up his friends before Egghead attacked again, and getting back to Vanilla immediately. The blue hedgehog stood up before racing over to the six year old girl who was crying in fear, apparently having woken up and apparently thought that everyone was dead. It broke his heart to see her in such a state.
"Cream! Are you okay?" Sonic cried out, standing in front of the distraught little girl who, hearing his voice, looked up slowly along with Cheese who had also been crying, hurdled up in his owner and friend's arms, and both felt sheer relief which formed on their faces.
"Sonic...! Oh, thank goodness! I thought you and everybody else were...!" Cream sniffled, trailing off. "I was scared!"
"Chao, chao, chao!" Cheese chirped with the similar feeling.
"Don't worry. Everybody's okay. I'm gonna get you outta this thing and then we're outta here back to your mom!" Sonic promised, looking for a safe way to break through the glass without injuring his youngest friends or making cuts on his hands. Noticing a broken rock near his shoes, he picked it up and instructed them. "Close your eyes, cover them and look away. Understand?"
Cream and Cheese both nodded, and did as they were told, before Sonic smashed the glass with the rock, shattering it completely and finally freeing the two. He then stepped inside and scooped the young rabbit girl into his arms before turning and stepping out just as the rest of his gathered friends finally woke up, groaning.
"Ow...My head." Amy groaned, rubbing her head after the impact.
"That was some explosion. But at least we're alive." Tails remarked, feeling a headache coming on. He looked around and saw to his and the pink hedgehog's relief to see Sonic with Cream and Cheese in his arms, quickly approaching them. "And we got Cream and Cheese!"
"Thank goodness! I knew we could do it!" Amy exclaimed in relief, at not only her 'boyfriend' still alive, but also that her best friend and little sister figure was safe and freed.
"Hey, Knuckles! Wake up!" Sonic cried out as he reached the X Tornado with Cream and Cheese holding onto him, while the red echidna groaned before regaining consciousness himself.
"Ugh...Ow. Talk about a headache." Knuckles grumbled, rubbing his head with his eyes squeezed shut. "That's the last time I'm ever getting involved anything that's Eggman related."
"Hey! Worry about your head later! We gotta move!" The blue hedgehog shouted again, leaping onto the plane's wing as Tails, quickly reacting, opened up the hatch to allow his best friend and older brother to carefully settle the rescued girl and Chao into the back seat and buckled them up.
"Cream, are you okay?" Amy asked frantically as she twisted slightly to glance at the child. "You're not hurt, are ya?"
"I'm alright, and Cheese is too." Cream replied, still a bit scared but very relieved and beginning to relax a little, knowing that all of her friends have indeed come to her and the Chao's rescue.
"Sonic, what about the Chaos Emeralds?" Tails asked suddenly, making Sonic froze and softly gasp, before he looked at the machine again, and found that all of the slots were empty. They were gone.
"I guess the machine blew them away. Maybe they...Chaos Controlled themselves outta here and knocked everybody out." Sonic hesitantly replied, still feeling uneasy and wondered if he was actually dreaming right now, or everything he and his friends went through had been a long dream.
He couldn't tell which was reality, and it left him feeling frightened. Normally whenever the Chaos Emeralds were used by the power of thoughts, they would scatter all by themselves. This time, it was different. He couldn't feel their Chaos Energy around here, and didn't see them glow underneath the rubble, so it proved that they were gone. Question is, what was happening?
Sonic was brought out of his thoughts when Eggman finally woke up, and Decoe, Bocoe, and Bokkun all woke up, before the evil doctor growled angrily after he saw the damage was done to his not so secret base, and his latest evil plot having been blown up in his face again, and this time the blue hedgehog hadn't been fully responsible despite having interfered again.
"You idiots! Look what you've done!" Eggman shouted furiously at his stupid robot minions who all flinched in fright, leaning back while quivering.
"W-we're sorry, doctor! We didn't mean it!" Decoe yelped, holding his hands up in surrender.
"Sonic interrupted! What we did was an accident!" Bocoe added, gulping nervously.
"That plan just went up in smoke!" Bokkun complained, coughing up a smoke puff out of his mouth.
"I'll deal with you later!" The evil scientist growled, before turning his attention to the escaping team as Knuckles recovered and leaped onto the other wing of the plane, while Tails quickly closed the hatch and both the red echidna and blue hedgehog held onto both wings. "As for you, Sonic...!"
By then, it was already too late as Tails, after making sure his plane was still functioning and intact, lifted the X Tornado into the air and up towards the large hole in the ceiling to freedom.
"Sorry, Eggman, but we've gonna take Cream home to her mom! See ya!" Sonic, recovering from his mental crisis, smirked and mockingly gave his nemesis a two-finger salute before he and his friends vanished from the base and flew away, back towards their village with the mission accomplished.
Eggman could only growl in pure anger and hate as he could only watch Sonic's group escape with his captives, with another plan ruined yet again.
"You haven't seen the last of me yet, Sonic the Hedgehog!" Eggman hissed darkly. "I'll get you! Someday, your life will forfiet, along with your little kindergarten friends, and the world will be mine! YOU WILL BE MINE!"
"...I think he's lost it." Decoe said nervously, hugging Bocoe in terror while his companion did the same.
"Not only he's lost it, he's also lost the kid and Chao and the Chaos Emeralds." The grey robot added.
"Well, it's all your fault! You two caused this to happen!" Bokkun pointed out angrily, pointing an accused finger at the two taller robots who quickly glared back at him.
"Why is it our fault!?" Decoe asked, annoyed. "You bumped into us!"
"You have it the other way around!" The smallest robot ranted childishly.
"Do not!" Bocoe argued.
The three robots were left arguing while Eggman was left fuming and steaming in anger, vowing to get his revenge and figure out how to get the Chaos Emeralds...again.
High in the air leaving behind the destroyed base done by the explosion that wasn't Chaos Control, the early morning's sun continued to rise, peaking behind the ocean as the X Tornado was making it's way back to Cream's house after a slight delay. None the less, everyone was celebrating another mission success and despite the Chaos Emeralds having gone missing, at least they weren't in the hands of the evil doctor.
"Great job, guys! Mission accomplished!" Sonic praised with a smile, giving his friends a thumbs up, feeling proud that they can get Cream home back to her worried mother...much, much sooner than he thought.
"We did it!" Tails cheered happily.
"See, Cream? Everything's okay now. You'll be home soon." Amy said happily to her friend behind her.
"I knew you would all come. Thank you for saving us, you guys." Cream replied just as happily and relieved.
"Chao, chao, chao!" Cheese squeaked happily.
"You're welcome, Cream. We're always there for ya and Cheese!" The blue hedgehog replied, winking at his youngest friend. The other two nodded and said their agreements, which the little girl was more than happy for.
"It was too easy. Not including the explosion part. I thought the Chaos Emeralds would send us to another part of the planet or something." Knuckles shrugged, which made Sonic pause the moment the red echidna said this.
'Huh...I thought it actually did happen. Except it took us through time and space, to an entire new world with new people. Discovering new things, the pasts of what happened before we were born...saving their world. Making new friends and going on adventures. Could it really...have all been a dream? I don't understand.' Sonic thought to himself as he looked away, a concerned and sad frown replacing his smile on his muzzle.
He had no idea what was going on, feeling all confused and afraid. Then, realizing what he was doing, Sonic mentally and quickly shook his head before smirking at Knuckles, hoping that neither he or the rest of his friends noticed his expression.
"Ah, I knew we'd be fine. Nothing to worry about!" Sonic told him, acting as his usual, confident self. "If Eggman keeps on thinking he'll ever win, that guy's mistaken."
"Be careful what you wish for, Sonic. You say something like that, and you're bound to jinx us." Knuckles warned sternly.
"You worry too much, Knuckles. We saved Cream, didn't we?" The blue hedgehog shrugged with a smug grin, and eyes briefly closed before opening them. "Speaking of which, let's get her home and hopefully get some sleep. Dunno about you guys, but I'm beat."
"Yeah, it's been a long night, and we did get an unscheduled short nap when the machine exploded." Tails agreed.
The girls and little Chao all agreed, and as the two-tailed fox sped up the X Tornado, Sonic couldn't wait to reunite Cream back to her mother. At the same time, though, briefly left to his thoughts, his mind whirled to what was happening to him. He was in a state of confusion on whether everything he saw was a dream, or he somehow passed out after having traveled across Space and Time independently in his Super Sonic form while Amy was crying and hugging him...and he was merely sleeping, or, another dreaded thought came into mind.
'What if I'm in a coma and can't wake up? Oh, man. Something's wrong with me! This...this can't be happening! What if this is a dream and I'm just experiening a made up what-ifs?' Sonic thought to himself, a surge of panic washing over him like a wave from the ocean attempting to swallow him.
Maybe he would wake up shortly. But the pit in his stomach swished and turned, as this felt more real than what he saw, even though everything he at least experienced seemed real to him. But now...now it began to feel like a very vivid dream.
"Sonic? Are you okay?" Tails spoke up, noticing his big brother's unusual troubled expression.
"Huh?" Sonic blinked, before smiling quickly, and lied. "Yeah, I'm okay. Just tired."
'Maybe if I go to bed, I'll wake up with Amy by my side, worried about me and tell me that I passed out and having some kind of dream. Yeah, that sounds reasonable. Just gotta get Cream back to her mom first.' He thought to himself, feeling guilty for lying to his friends, but he needed to know on whether or not this was real or he was unconscious.
"This is my stop." Knuckles announced suddenly, bringing Sonic out of his thoughts. Before the blue hedgehog or any of the others could ask what the red echidna was talking about, he simply jumped off with a wave and landed safely on the ground below, before rushing off for home, back on Angel Island.
"Why doesn't he want to come with us?" Cream asked, confused and worried. Cheese murmured in concern himself.
"It's just Knuckles. He'll be fine. We'll see him again at some point." Sonic reassured, not worried at all. It was just how his friend was.
"He could've at least asked us to give him a lift after Vanilla thanked him." Amy pointed out, annoyed by the rude departure.
The blue hedgehog shook his head, telling his self-proclaimed girlfriend. "That's just how he is."
It wasn't long before the group of five arrived in their village a few minutes later, before Tails, still a bit disappointed with Knuckles having left already himself, landed the X Tornado on the ground, in front of the small path in the courtyard in front of Cream's house, where Vanilla, having heard the plane's promising engines, almost immediately raced outside with hope rising in her chest and face.
Tails didn't waste time in opening up the hatch so that Cream could unbuckle herself and Sonic helped her down, setting her gently onto the ground, saying. "There ya go."
"Thank you, Sonic." Cream replied, bowing politely at her friend before racing over to her mother almost immediately, happily crying out. "Mama!"
"Cream! Oh, my little darling!" Vanilla tearfully cried, her arms open as her beloved daughter leaped in and the mother and child happily hugged, reunited. "I was so worried."
"I'm okay, Mama. But I'm so happy to be home. Sonic, Tails, Amy and Knuckles saved me and Cheese." Cream replied, snuggling into her mother's chest, as Cheese joined in the reunion, while Tails shut off the engine before and Amy joined Sonic on the ground.
The trio smiled happily at the heart-warming reunion, sharing relieved and warm glances, pleased that they have kept to their promise.
"I knew you would bring my Cream home. Thank you so much, Sonic, Tails and Amy." Vanilla said to the three warmly, as Cream nodded and beamed with a happy giggle.
"You're very welcome, Vanilla." Amy replied warmly, while Tails sheepishly rubbed the back of his head, and Sonic smirked, giving the two rabbit girls a thumbs up.
"We always keep to our promises." Sonic added. Still, he couldn't stop thinking about how this was what he had wanted, and yes it was a dream come true, he still wasn't certain on whether this was real or he was simply fast asleep.
'This is how I thought it would be before the Chaos Control sent us to Chris' world. But, if this is real, then would it mean that humans were just figments of my imagination? If so, then Chris...he's not real.' The blue hedgehog thought, a painful ache rising in his chest, a piece of him shattering like glass.
"Would you all like to stay for a little while? I'll be making some blueberry pancakes for breakfast." Vanilla offered.
"That would be great! Thank you!" Amy replied excitedly.
"Sure, of course we will." Tails added.
"Thanks, but I think I'll pass." Said Sonic, much to the surprise of his friends for his declined offer.
"Sonic! You mean you're turning down Vanilla's offer?" The pink hedgehog asked, annoyed by her boyfriend's answer.
The blue hedgehog shrugged, "Sorry, but it's been a long night. I'm kinda not hungry right now, and I'm pretty exhausted. Maybe next time, I'll take up the offer."
"Are you sure, Sonic?" Cream asked, sensing that something was wrong.
Vanilla felt the same thing, asking in slight concern. "Are you alright, Sonic? You're not sick, are you?"
"No, no. It's nothing like that. I'm fine, really. Sorry, but I...I'll see you guys later." Sonic replied, becoming more and more nervous, his hands beginning to shake, emotions uncontrollably creeping up. If they found out what he was really thinking, he didn't know what to do.
Ignoring their further questions and stepping away as though he was about to face a nightmare ending badly with everyone stepping up to him, like how he was cornered and wrongly arrested after being mistaken for Shadow, Sonic sped away as quickly as possible for home, his thoughts racing as he pleaded himself to go really fast. He had to home, he had to get back to his house, urgently.
"Sonic?" Tails called out, worriedly, but by then the blue hedgehog was gone. Concern continued to grow as he muttered. "Something's wrong. He's been acting strangely ever since we left Eggman's base."
"Maybe Sonic had a bad dream after the machine blew up?" Cream thought, worriedly.
"A machine blew up?" Vanilla asked, concerned.
"Uh-huh. He made this machine to try and use the Chaos Emeralds for." Her daughter replied, explaining what happened through out the night, while the other two could only continue to gaze in the direction that Sonic had run off to.
"Sonic...what's wrong with you?" Amy whispered, worriedly as all annoyance over his decline vanished. Something was making her boyfriend very spooked and he was trying to hide it. The question is, what?
'This is a dream, this is a dream, this is a dream!' Sonic's rushed thoughts continued to echo in his head, his heart racing as he couldn't stop. He had to back fast, and pray that he'd wake up from what he half-hoped was a dream.
After what felt like an eternity which in reality, or dream-wise, he couldn't tell, was only ten or fifteen seconds, his house was in sight and Sonic all but barged into his front door, slamming it shut behind him and leaned against, panting and breathing hard as though he'd been in a very tough battle against Eggman's Egg-Terminator giant robot powered by all seven Chaos Emeralds. That had almost killed the blue hedgehog if it hadn't been for Chris risking his own life to save him.
That time, he hated to admit it, still terrified him. But Sonic had been brave enough to keep going, not willing to stop and while he did almost die, he made it through. Yet he wasn't certain on whether that time was real or not. Looking around in the familiar small passageway of his house, the warmth it gave out as everything was the way he remembered, Sonic slowly walked and, still uncertain, checked every room his home had. The small kitchen was the same, as were the living room, and upstairs, the bathroom, the guest room, the closets even though he only had his shoes and gloves, the small storage on trinklets and souvenirs in his travels across this globe.
Finally, he reached his bedroom after what felt like too long, and like the rest of his house, it was the same. The comfortable red, the round window, a couple of picture frames with photos of himself with his friends on the bedside table which included the light lamp, and drawers. Finding himself hesitant while uncertain of why, the blue hedgehog crept over to his bed, feeling the fatigue taking it's toll on him, before he slid his shoes off and climbed in, snuggling under the warm quilt and rested his head on the soft pillow, curling up slightly.
Before closing his eyes, Sonic checked his calendar and found that it was exactly a day after the supposed Chaos Control accident. Yet not an entire year as he thought it was.
'If I wake up in the real world, I'll have to buy myself a new one. Here goes...' Sonic thought to himself as he slowly closed his eyes, and while he was still high on anxiety, the teenage hedgehog eventually drifted off to sleep after the exhaustion of the rescue mission took it's toll on him.
When he opened his eyes, Sonic found himself standing upright, not in his house, or in bed, or even indoors. He was in the flower field of the mountain terrain of the human world. To him it wasn't far from Station Square. The question is, how did he get here?
"Why am I in this place?" Sonic asked himself, before a very familiar and welcoming voice called out his name from the distance. Turning to his right, he felt his heart leap in surprise and sheer relief as, running towards him was a familiar twelve year old human boy running up towards him.
"Sonic! Hey, Sonic!" Chris cried out, in his casual clothes, happily waving.
Happiness bloomed all over the blue hedgehog as a wide smile formed on his face at the sight of his human best friend, tears began to form.
"Chris...Chris!" Sonic responded, immediately racing over and being faster of the two, the blue hedgehog couldn't help but laugh as he reached his friend with his arms wide in a child-like matter, but he didn't care. "Hi, Chris!"
The two close friends met as Sonic gave Chris a great big hug, reunited as the young boy returned it, spinning around with the blue hedgehog in his arms. They both laughed before Chris stopped and simply hugged Sonic tightly.
"Oh man, Chris! It's great to see ya! I missed you!" Sonic cried happily, his tears sliding free as he didn't want to let go, overwhelmed by his emotions he normally kept in check with his cool factor.
"I missed you so much too, Sonic." Chris whispered, silently crying.
"It's okay, buddy. Everything's okay." The blue hedgehog replied. "I had this crazy dream that you weren't real, and-"
"Sonic...I'm sorry." The young boy interrupted, suddenly sounding all sad.
Confused and quickly concerned, Sonic looked up to find that his friend held a guilty and heart-broken expression. What caught him off-guard was what Chris said next. "I'm not real."
"W-what? What do you mean?" Sonic asked, shocked in hearing this.
"Everything about me, about our adventures together...it was all just a dream, done by the Chaos Emeralds when the machine blew up. It affected you, Sonic, making you live in a dream that seemed real, and you had to say goodbye to me...in order to wake up back in the real world." Chris sadly explained, as though he went through a sudden change.
His heart dropped into his stomach, shattering shortly after when he heard this. This...couldn't be true...! It wasn't true! The Chaos Emeralds...were responsible for him having gone through what he thought was real?
"No...Chris, don't say that! Please tell me what you just said isn't true at all!" Sonic pleaded, before being gently put down by his friend. "Chris...!"
"It's time for me to go. I'm...I'm really glad that...that we got to see each other one more time, Sonic." Chris tearfully said with a heart-broken smile. "I...I'll never forget all the fun adventures we had. I may be gone from the dream, but I'm always with you in your memories. Grandpa, Mr. Tanaka, Ella, Helen, Uncle Sam, Francies, Danny, everybody else, too. Even Shadow..."
"Chris, no!" Sonic exclaimed, shaking his head in denial.
"Goodbye, Sonic...You...were my best friend." Chris said, ignoring the distraught and heart-broken hedgehog as he then began to float backwards like a ghost, quicker than the fastest thing alive.
"Hey, wait! Don't go! Chris, don't leave me!" The blue hedgehog pleaded, reaching out for him as he ran as fast as he could. But even with his speed, he wasn't fast enough, Chris was already fading away like a ghost.
"I love you, Sonic...goodbye." The human boy said one final time in an echo, before vanishing all together, tears falling but with a smile.
"CHRIS! CHRIS!" Sonic screamed, falling into his knees. "Chris, come back! COME BACK! I LOVE YOU! CHRIIIIIIISSSSS!"
"CHRIS!" Sonic screamed as he jolted awake, sitting upright in bed as he panted. Looking from left to right, the blue hedgehog found that he was still in his room, the sun was now shining high in the sky in the late morning.
Looking at his calendar again, Sonic found that it was still the same date as he'd fallen asleep in, but no traces of cobwebs he expected and actually hoped he would see. He screamed out for Amy repeatedly, hoping that she was somewhere close by to reassure himself that he had just collapsed and she carried him inside with difficulty.
But there was no response. He was all alone in his home for the time being. Sonic looked out from his window, and he could hear children outside faintly, playing.
All hope for awakening from what he thought was a dream went into dust and faded like the wind...just like...just like Chris, who Sonic now knew for certain, and in terrible ache, was nothing more than just his imagination.
"Everything about me, about our adventures together...it was all just a dream, done by the Chaos Emeralds when the machine blew up, and you had to say goodbye to me...in order to wake up back in the real world."
Time barely passed in the real world, but in the dream, time ran faster. Not as fast as Sonic himself, but still fast enough. It made perfect sense, what Chris had told him. The Chaos Emeralds messed up with his mind no thanks to Eggman's machine. He had been living in the dream world until the point he had to say goodbye to the boy he became close friends with, one who was just a dream.
While Sonic was glad that he kept to his promise in getting Cream back to her mother and didn't have to wait for several months before the two were finally reunited, and that they and everybody else didn't end up crossing through space and time to a forgien world that took a while in getting used to, the fact that all of his adventures on Earth was never real to begin with.
That realization of the reality broke his heart.
"Chris...Oh, Chris...! You...you're not real...You never were...there are no such things as humans, except maybe Eggman...but still..." Sonic muttered, the pain of the reality was too much, and for the first time in years, ever since he was a small child, he broke down into tears.
He was crying hard.
Sonic fell back into bed, twisted slightly to bury his face into his pillow and sobbed. It was too much for the cobalt young hero.
Sonic the Hedgehog was heart broken by a dream of his adventures that never happened.
A/N: This story may be short, with maybe three or four or five chapters. I'm not sure at this point, but I was struggling with my other stories and this idea came up. I know it's a sad story, but I couldn't help it. But don't worry, Sonic will be okay...just not yet.
See you in the next chapter!
