A week had passed since the mission and as always life goes on for everyone. However, fate had other plans with a certain pair of Spirit Detectives. Ever since that encounter with Hiei, Miyuki began to take her training and practice a little seriously. Her skills with the throwing knives are getting a bit better, however her water bending techniques are still sloppy and clumsy which didn't settle down on the girl's expectation.
Then on cue this happens on the perfect yet awful timing.
One day at school, Botan called her and Yusuke to the rooftop so she can give the next mission from Koenma. Apparently, there was a Human Hunter named Rando, who had stolen secret techniques and abilities from many psychics, and as his next target, he had chosen Genkai who just happened to look for an apprentice to teach. In this case scenario, Koenma already arranged a meeting for Miyuki, which the old psychic agreed on since the female Spirit Detective needed the training as well. As for Yusuke however, he is going to be the one to go undercover for the mission while his sister is watching over.
After some talk and convincing, their mother agreed and let the two go to this 'Boot Camp' they assigned themselves to. The next day Miyuki was walking up on the stairs that would lead to the new teacher's house all alone. After reaching the top, the gates in front of the girl open. Soon a woman shorter than her stepped outside with a young girl who was in the same age as Miyuki, maybe at least one year older.
The old lady had pinkish-grey hair with hazel eyes and wore a martial art uniform. On top of her head, she wore a purple cap the kanji sign on the front meaning that she was the master.
"Master Genkai." Miyuki greeted as she gave a bow to her future teacher who let a small smirk paint its way up to her face.
"Hmm, you have manners, good to know." Said the old woman as she scanned Miyuki's figure from bottom to top. "It's been a while since we had seen another water-bender, isn't that right Ruby?"
At the word ' water bender' Miyuki lifted her gaze up and glanced at the teen girl who was wearing a blue old traditioned like dress with a leather bota bag or pouch around her waist. Her skin was the same colour as the almond and long braided hair as black as coal, eyes like two coffee beans, and a small birthmark on her left cheek.
"I assume Koenma had mentioned it?" Miyuki asked politely as she turned her attention back to the master.
"Yes, he did." Genkai nodded. "But I will warn you now, no slacking off in this training, or even think about running away once you step in. To see how strong you're, you'll also be participating in the first half of my tournament."
"Of course, ma'am." Miyuki bowed her head making the master smirk once more.
"Good." Genkai replied. "What's your name child?"
"Miyuki Urameshi." Replied the girl. "I am truly humbled to be in your presence." She added honesty because unlike her brother, she would be respectful to others who deserve it or to people who truly want to share knowledge with her.
"Hm." Genkai hummed to herself thoughtfully while taking a mental note of her new pupil.
"The name is Ruby. Also, a Water-bender." The girl, Ruby introduced herself as she walked over and bowed to her newfound water-bending partner. "It's nice to know I am not the only one."
"A pleasure." Miyuki nodded to her as she politely replied to the other teen.
"Let's not waste any more time." With that, the master turned on her heels and walked inside. "Come on now."
"Yes, Master Genkai." The two said in perfect sync before following her inside the place.
As soon as we arrived, I saw a huge crowd in front of the other entrance. I was bewildered about it, to be honest. People from many races, sizes, and spiritual energies. However, there was no female among them, which was just a bit surprising to me. Anyways, I can see some rare and talented people I'd say, but which of them is the fraud? Rando in disguise.
"Looking for someone?" I hear Ruby ask beside me as she placed a hand onto my upper arm. I usually don't like human contact but for this girl, I'll let it slide for once.
"Just my brother." I replied politely as I turned to Ruby.
"Your brother is participating in the tournament as well?" Ruby asked curiously as wonder-filled her eyes. I hummed a small 'yes' in response.
"Hey, Miyu! Over here!" A very familiar and annoying sibling shouted behind me making me mentally facepalm.
"And speak of the devil, he is here." I informed the water-bender girl as I turned to the crowd and sure, Yusuke was now in the front with. . . .
"Oh, Miyuki! HEY!" Carrot Top greeted me with an excited grin on his face, making my eyes twitch with annoyance.
"What are You doing here?" I asked as I pointed a finger at the ugly carrot head.
"Oh, he came here for a small therapy session with grandma. " Yusuke said lazily making me mentally roll my eyes at him.
"SHUT UP, URAMESHI!" Kuwabara yelled irritated as he grabbed my brother by the collar and brought him closer to his face. His eyes glaring hard like he is trying to shoot lasers out of them or something.
"Is that your brother?" Ruby asked beside me as she gestured at my idiot's direction. I replied with a small hum as a 'yes' once more like before. Her voice caught both boys' attention and now they were making those googly eyes at my newfound training partner like she is the only beauty in the whole world.
"Hey, who is your new friend here, sis?" Yusuke asked curiously as his eyes scanned her features. Kuwabara did the same but he looked more like in a trance, like Hiei took control over his mind.
Hiei. . . Why did he come into my mind all of the sudden? Out of all things. . .
I shook my head violently before turning to Ruby.
"Ruby, this is my brother Yusuke as you heard." I pointed at the said person who gave a small wave.
"Hey!" He said a wide grin on his face.
"And this is-." I began but Kazuma cleared his throat loudly, cutting me off to my utter annoyance.
"The names Kazuma Kuwabara. " Carrot head introduced himself as he approached Ruby. I don't know what kind of expression he is holding but I think he is trying to impress the poor girl who is probably creeped out by now.
"Uuuhh. . ." The teen girl breathed, awkwardly and quiet flustered by the sudden gaze and the hands that grabbed onto her small ones.
"What's your name?" Kazuma asked. " Other than Beauty?" My eyebrow twitched with irritation at this idiot and did what every person would do. Hit him in the head.
"Give her some space lover boy." I told him coldly.
Just then, I hear the doors of the dojo slid open behind us.
"My-my, quite a crowd." My new master Genkai said Ruby and I walked to the side to get out of her way. Shocked expressions were painted all over the entire men's faces as they finally got to see the famous Psychic with their own eyes. "Alright people, I suppose we should get things started." Genkai announced, making the whole crowd tremble with nervousness. "The first of your screening test will be. . ." A small dramatic pause followed, making me hold my breath slightly. "The drawing of lots." The entire people of that area face fell or landed on their butt as soon as those killer words left Genkai's mouth.
I hear Ruby chuckle beside me while I just hummed, letting my lips twitch up into an amused smile.
"Everyone must draw a lot from this old jar." She informed everyone as she pointed at the large ceramic jar beside her. "Come now, we haven't got all day."
I turned to Ruby for guidance but she just shrugged. I then looked at my new master who gave a small nod of approval. I mutely nod back and went to the jar to grab a lot and went back to the other teen girl's side. While waiting patiently for everyone to get their lot I began to inspect each person. Some of them had some spiritual energy while many had none. Our target is probably masking his energy as well. . . not just the looks. . .
"You did that fairly well, I'm impressed." The old lady said as she walked to the wooden railing. "Let's all open our lots now. If the paper inside of it is red then congratulations, you passed the first of today's screenings. "
I watched as everyone ripped the top of the small paper envelops and then placed two fingers in it to pull out their small red or blank papers. I looked at mine a little nervously for some reason. With a sigh, I just ripped the top off and reached inside to pull out. . . A red paper. Wait a minute. . . These aren't ordinary papers, are they?
Hmmm. Clever, way to choose.
I turned to Ruby who sent me a thumbs up and a smile toward my direction.
"Those, who won, please follow me. Those, who lost, please get lost." Said the master as she turned her back towards the crowd.
'Wow, nicely put.' I slightly felt myself smirking a little.
I like her attitude already, and if my brother dearest ends up winning this whole thing, I will enjoy watching him suffer during the training session under this lady's supervision.
"Hold on!" A deep voice called earning Genkai's, Ruby's, and mine's attention.
"Huh?" The master asked confused while my instincts kicked in and my hand reached for the small waist bag that held my kunai knives. Two fighters with big bodies yet no big amount of spirit energy in their bodies that would challenge me in any way.
"We are the two most powerful fighters of the Kusha mountain people." One of the barbarians said.
"We've come all this way cause we heard you make us greater." The other large mountain, a monk-like figure took over. "You can't turn us away with a piece of paper."
"Do you not see how big we are?" The previous barbarian growled. "You have to give us a fair shot."
"Tsk." I rolled my eyes at the adults who act like some stupid kids.
"The only difference with larger fighters is they're louder when they whine." Genkai replied not giving a crap or two to those losers either. "Can't you blockheads understand? I'm just trying to save you from embarrassment. " Her words just earned more glares and deadly looks from those two.
"I'm warning you!" The huge monk warned while the barbarian was baring his teeth. My eyes narrowed while my hand almost grabbed a knife.
"Back down girls." I hear the master say to me and Ruby who also prepared her own weapon that was in her leather pouch.
Water.
Smart thinking, maybe I should do that too.
With a small nod from Genkai I relaxed and just back down with Ruby.
"This probably goes way beyond your comprehension boys, but please try to pay attention." Master Genkai said with a serious tone. "If you are really ready for my training then why didn't your paper turned red?" I turned to her with recognition. So my guess hit the point, they weren't just simple papers that can get you in by luck.
As I told before, clever trick.
"I think she is asking us for more proof." Growled the barbarian before he and the monk charged at the old lady. I felt her spirit energy taking a big leap upward and soon Genkai's eyes began to glow. Then a blinding light came next, which forced me to shut my eyes close. My ear heard a loud crash. I reopened my eyes again, only to see those two brick heads now pinned into the wooden gate.
Got to say this is very impressive.
"Well, my powers are getting a bit rusty." Genkai said unimpressed. I now felt my mouth ajar slightly. Rusty, she says. "A few years ago those oafs would have ducked their heads if I winked at them wrong." She let out a small laugh. "I guess I'm really getting old." And with that she began walking away. "Alright, you red papers, please follow me!" She called, gaining the attention of everyone.
Hm, now this is what I call power. No wonder others want to learn this technique soo badly.
"Impressive, isn't it?" The teen girl asked me from behind my back. I turned to her and nodded my head with a small hum.
We began to walk for a short while and soon we were now inside of a large room full of game machines.
"This is not a normal house." I hear Yusuke says behind me.
"Maybe she likes videogames." Kazuma shared his guess with us.
I looked around the area, but then I saw something lowering down. I look up to see Genkai on a small round platform while chains around her lowered her figure.
"I hope you all brought your quarters, these games will be the second screening." She told us loud and clear enough to hear.
"Please master, may I ask what playing video games has to do with learning great power?" A boy with blue fight clothing and shaved head asked as he walked out of the crowd.
"Absolutely nothing, really." Genkai replied. "But these are not ordinary games that you'll be playing." One hand pointed at one of the games. "The Janken game tests your spirit awareness." She then pointed at another one. "The punching game shows your spirit's strength." Then last and not least she pointed at the karaoke game. "And the karaoke tests your energy's ability to adapt and grow stronger." After her explanation, Genkai then turned back to us with a firm expression. "If you cannot pass two out of three then go home quickly. And don't play the other games, they're just for me."
"Alright, hand me that boxing glove!" A man exclaimed as he walked up to one of the punching games. "Me and this game are old buddies." He bragged making me mentally facepalm. Taking a hard swing he punched the small boxing bag. The screen showed "18p." making everyone besides me laugh at the man whose jaw dropped in shock.
"That doesn't make any sense, I always get the high score at the punching game in my parent's pool house." I just shook my head weakly.
"Well, this isn't your parent's pool house." Master Genkai pointed out sternly. "It doesn't make any difference to that machine how physically strong you are unless your spirit strength goes along with it."
Kuwabara took the glove next and after his punch, he scored "129p."
Kazuma walked back over to me and my brother.
"One hundred and twenty nine, what do you think of that Urameshi?" Kuwabara bragged as he grinned like an idiot.
"Hmpf, don't get too excited." Yusuke said with confidence as he took himself a boxing glove as well. "I think there is something wrong with the machine. Here let me check it out for ya." He then raised his fist high and hit the bag hard, earning "155p."
"Nope, I guess it works fine." My idiot of a brother said earning a growl from Kazuma. I just sighed and reached for the boxing glove for my right hand, but froze as my eyes darted to the left one. Some warm sensation began to take over my left arm as I looked between the two gloves.
'Hmmm, maybe I should try the left hand.' I thought to myself. I don't know why my gut was telling me this, but I decided to trust in it.
"Careful Miyu, you don't want to break a nail now, do you?" Yusuke joked making some of the men that surrounded us snicker.
Tsk, sexist morons.
"Hn." I scoffed before swinging my left hand hard and punch the bag with everything I had. After that I then noticed my whole left arm getting a little warmed up on the shoulder area that got burned like a month ago. . .
Huh? Is that normal?
"Look at that, the little teen girl scored 177p! " Someone shouted making me turn to my score and sure enough it was there '177p'.
"What the- HOW?!" Kazuma exclaimed while Yusuke was just looking at me with wide eyes like I was an alien or something.
"Hn." I just hummed before going to the next games to test my abilities along with the boys. At the Janken game, I almost reached the carrot head's score if it wasn't for that three points, but I beat the boys again at the karaoke game where I reached at least scored 151.
Excluding myself, there were 20 people now that had managed to reach the next level of the challenge. I was walking next to my master and Ruby as we were heading to the edge of a dark forest, but just by looking at the woods, I can say this is no ordinary forest. My stomach felt like it was tied to a knot while I feel my palms become a bit sweaty. I didn't pull off my emotionless mask but I was nervous nonetheless like the others.
I watched as Genkai approached the magical thread fences before turning to us all.
"Now that the weak had been eliminated, the tests will be far more severe." Genkai announced.
"Hey, my insides feel all funny." A random guy said with voice trembling like the twig in the windy day.
"Master, the forest seems to have its own life source." The young boy from earlier stated making me turn to him with my eyes narrowed a bit.
"Yes, to say at least." My master confirmed the boy's suspicion. "It's known as the Dark Forest, and it's as old as the human race. It has become a sanctuary for the oldest and most primitive demons." She then pointed one hand up. "On the other side of the forest is a giant tree. Make it there and you pass the test. You have two hours."
"Uaagh, I'm not getting near that forest. I give up!" One of the remaining contestants exclaimed before running away like a coward. Then a few other people followed the scared rabbits' example making Genkai laugh at them.
"Haha, yes, run along, I don't blame you." She said with a grin. "Even a person with the slightest spirit awareness can feel this forest will tear you into pieces if you let it."
"There is some truth to what this woman says." One man with long green hair says. "Only those who had gone through the training should cross into these woods. It is no place for a boy for instance, let alone a little girl like you." He then looked directly at me. I just 'tsk' at the man and then ignore him for the rest of the day, but however, my brother's big mouth opened.
"Speak for yourself, I'm not about to get scared off by a little walk through grandma's forest." Yusuke said confidently, earning a warning look from me.
"Watch your mouth you dumb little brat!" Genkai scolded at him. From then on I just blocked my brother's stupidity out as well and looked into the depth of the dark forest.
This is going to be interesting, that's for sure.
"Best of luck and I hope you don't die." Genkai said. I let out a small hum of amusement as one end of my lips lifted up into a small smirk.
"Ready." I positioned myself for the run. "Set." A small pause. "Go!"
My legs began to take off and now I was on the other side of that small fence. As I was running next to my brother and Kuwabara, I noticed Genkai running in front of us like it was no big deal.
"We will be waiting for you by the tree." She said as I looked at her a little surprised by her impressive speed. "If you're smart, you'll use your spirit awareness to find the quickest way. Goodbye." With that, she sped off like a motorcycle. She is as fast as Hiei. Then I hear something flapping above us. I lifted my gaze up and saw the other water-bender flying over my head, and she had wings that were made out of water! Wow, that's amazing, I admit that.
I shook my head violently and just kept on running, leaving my brother and the others behind. On my way there I paused as I felt my left arm warming up again. I looked at my bandaged up spot curiously.
It didn't hurt at least, it just felt warm. I began running again but it went out cold as soon as I left that area.
Wait. . . it this trying to lead me out of it?
Maybe. . .
I guess I can give it a try.
I rushed back to the spot and the warm feeling came back once more. I began to follow the path that my left hand was leading me onto like a compass. I took another corner, then a few more turns. While heading to find my exit I felt my shoulder get warmer and warmer by seconds. Many things were flying in the air. Voices like the wind or the people who were screaming for help. I just ignored them all and continued my journey.
That's when I saw it. The light at the end of the tunnel. Well in this case, the end of the forest. I couldn't help but smile at the achievement. My legs carrying all the way toward my exit. As soon as I reached the clearing and left the woods behind me I noticed my arm stopped burning. I panted a little before running up to the hill to meet up with my future master and the other teen girl. They looked a little surprised when they noticed me but I just ran up right in front of them and then stopped to catch my breath.
"Hm, one hour and thirteen minutes. " Genkai said as she looked at her pocket watch. "Well done little one." I weakly nodded and just let myself collapse onto the grass beneath me, still breathing heavily. Damn, why am I so slow?
"Want some water?" The kind-hearted Ruby offered.
In reply I shook my head. I sent her a tiny and tired smile, which she returned with her small one with her eyes closed. I admit, she was something special in her own incredible ways that is. . .
Minutes had gone and I woke up from my small nap by the sound of footsteps. I lifted my head up and saw Kuwabara reaching the huge tree where we are at the moment.
"Hello, boy." Genkai greeted my school mate who looked around.
"Am I really the first one? Really?" The carrot head asked as he pointed one finger at himself, grinning widely.
"Well technically, she beat you to it." The master said as pointed at my direction. "But if we look at the Tournament only, then yes."
"Ouh-uh, great job there Miyuki!" Kazuma complimented as he sent me a stupid grin with a thumbs up. I just closed my eyes and huffed at his praise. Seriously, when is he going to take the hint? I am not interested in him at all and I never will be!
Soon two more people came rushing up to the meeting spot. It was that jerk from earlier and that ninja man. By the look on their faces, they were a little unimpressed and angry for not being the first ones.
"I thought for sure we would be the first ones." The ninja huffed as he sent dagger to Kazuma and me with his gaze.
"We let ourselves have too much fun in there." The green-haired guy added.
"Hmpf." I crossed my arms behind my neck and leaned my back against the tree as my mind wondered where my brother dearest is?
Fast forward a few more minutes four more people arrived and one of them, of course, is that young boy with that blue fighting uniform. His very being somewhat caught my suspicions, but I can be wrong and he might be just lucky to get there. Making a mental note of him I looked at the people who arrived. Yusuke was nowhere near them.
Where could he be?
I hear Genkai slap her pocket watch close.
"Times up!" She said. "Only you seven have passed." Oh no.
"Ugh, wait a second." Kuwabara said suddenly. "There should be one more guy coming." I rose an eyebrow at that.
"Sorry, I never make exceptions." Genkai replied to him. I sighed as I got myself up to my feet, prepared to go for him to fetch his-.
"WAIT FOR ME!" I hear my brother shout in the distance.
"What?" The master and I asked as we both turned to the source's direction, and sure enough, Yusuke was making his way up here toward us.
"Urameshi!" Kuwabara exclaimed before my brother was now only a foot away from the group.
"You know, suddenly I am reminded of a fortune cookie I ate that said the straight way is not always the fastest." Yusuke told us and I just shook my head at him.
"Oh, but listen boy." Genkai said a little hesitantly. "Surely you didn't go straight through the forest, you would have faced the lethal man bat." She explained.
"What? You mean Baldock?" Yusuke asked. "Yeah, he was hanging out with me for a while. " My brother admitted. "That guy was fast, but not nearly as fast as Hiei." At that name I felt my heart for some reason skip a beat. What? It's just an idiot demon, nothing more.
"I took care of him real good though, you'll see." Yusuke proudly said before starting to laugh. Why is he laughing? He just went through the time limit.
"Idiot!" I called him, earning his full attention while finally shutting him up. It's not like I wasn't glad that he made it out in one piece but he still has a job to do. "There is no reason for you to laugh Stupid, because you went over the time limit." After my explanation Yusuke's eyes grew wide.
"What? Is that true?" My brother asked in disbelief.
"Yes, and it's your stupid fault!" Carrot head shouted at him as he grabbed my brother by the collar.
I look at Genkai with a little hope within me. I saw her smile a little.
"It seems to be." She replied before looking back up to the two boys. "But I believe I will make an exception. After all, I don't want my other new apprentice competing in this next part." I looked at Ruby questioningly, and just shrugged her shoulders.
Then I looked back at my brother who began to hug Kazuma?
Well, that's not something that you would see every day. Especially from those two. As the realization dawned on the two they began to bicker again like an old married couple.
Well, now that this is settled I turned to the remaining competitors. Only six fighters, but one in disguise.
I hope this will be over soon, because if Yusuke ends up fighting with that Rando there might be a chance that he won't come back again.
