A/N:
Why hello there. This is a Bertholdt short angsty story or whatever you want to call it. Bertholdt is my second favourite character, but me and one of my mates were talking about how there weren't many angsty fan fictions about him. So this is how this sh*tty story came to be. I hope you enjoy.
Trigger Warnings:
- Swearing,
- Panic attack
- Over the top angst
"NO!" Bertholdt screamed as he awoke violently. He let out a shaky breath and wipe some of the sweat off his brow. He carefully moved his shaking hand down to his chest, feeling his irregular heartbeat begin to slow. Bertholdt gulped and looked around the room. He let out a long sigh, "Looks like no one else is here."
It had been exactly 14 months since he and the other cadets began the 104th cadet Training Corps. It was taking a toll on everyone, but it took a turn for the worst on others. Bertholdt already struggled with the nightmares that plagued him while he slept. He didn't need late night training to add to that stress.
He swung his long legs over the side of his shared bunk bed, as a yawn made its way past his lips. Bertholdt lazily got down from the top bunk and headed towards the boys shared bathroom to change. He opened the door and walked towards a wooden set of draws. He bent down and opened the bottom draw and grabbed his training gear.
Once he had changed he quickly cast a glance at the mirror. Bertholdt was naturally very pale, but the bags under his eyes made him look like he hadn't had a good night sleep in ages. Which you would be right. He exited the bathroom and headed outside towards the food court. Not that he was hungry, but someone would go looking for him. He sighed and opened the door.
As Bertholdt entered a half eaten apple flew past his head and splattered against the wall. He leaned over the banister to see Eren and Jean having a good fight, making his ears ring. Unlike all the other times when Eren and Jean fought, there were other people joining in.
He walked down the stairs and over to a table with his friends. "Finally decided to get up did ya?" Reiner teased as he took his seat next to him. "We don't have any training until this evening. He began, trying to ignore the b*tch of a headache he had. "I just didn't see the point of waking up early."
"CONNIE!!! GIVE ME THAT POTATO!!!" Sasha screamed, causing most people in the room - including Bertholdt and Reiner - to cover their ears. "NO!!! YOU HAVE ALREADY EATEN 6!!!" Connie shouted back at her. Sasha turned towards the table Bertholdt and Reiner were sat at and grabbed a bowl and threw it towards Connie.
Connie just about dodged the bowl, but in turn it smacked Jean in the back of his head. "OW!!! WHAT THE F*CK!?!?" Jean charged at Sasha as she screamed, "NOOOO!!! I'M SORRY!!!" Jean the did a really creepy laugh. "SORRY WON'T SAVE YOU NOW!!!"
Bertholdt groaned and placed his head on the table. He then proceeded to place his arms over his head, trying desperately to block out the screams and laughs burning his ears. He whimpered as the noise kept getting louder and louder. Every sound was like his brain was being stabbed with tiny, sharp needles.
His breath hitched as the pain only increased. He felt cold, it made his ribs ache. He was aware someone called his name, but he was too busy trying to calm the f*ck down. A different voice, a voice a lot closer also said something, be he chose to ignore it.
Bertholdt flinched violently when he felt a warm hand on his shoulder. Because he recoiled away from the touch, his pale face and glazed eyes faced the person that reached out to him. Reiner. Reiner's hand was still extended from when he attempted to comfort him and his eyes were wide with shock and concern.
That's the moment when Bertholdt realised the food court was eerily quiet. Frantically, he stood up. Eyes dashing around the room. Although his gaze didn't rest upon any particular person for more than a second, he could tell that they were worried. And they seemed to be getting closer.
That's when the shacking started. Ushered tears began to fall as he placed his left handed over his mouth, as he slowly reversed away from his friends and towards the stairs. "Bertl, I need you to calm down." Reiner spoke softly, closing the gap for him to bolt towards the door. Bertholdt shook his head as more tears poured from his eyes.
Everyone was now extremely close to him. His legs began to shake more as a felling of claustrophobia overcame him. He had 2 options replaying through his mind. "Collapse" or "Run". The second option won.
Bertholdt turned away from Reiner and ran up the stairs, missing a few as he went. "BERTHOLDT!!!" He couldn't afford to turn around, he didn't want them to see him have a breakdown. They would only pity him. He slammed the door as his feet hit the muddy ground. Having long legs and a head start would get him far enough away for him to collapse in silence.
"SH*T!!!" Someone yelled, followed by, "GO AFTER HIM!!!" And with that Bertholdt picked up the pace. He ran past the training grounds and towards the forest where they practice using their ODM gear. Knowing fully well he was going to get lost in here.
His heart hammered against his rib cage, making it harder to both breathe and focus. Black spots clouded his vision, but he kept on moving, knowing that if he stopped the others would catch up. "SPLIT UP!!! HE MIGHT BE IN HERE!!!" His head automatically turned at the sound of Reiner's voice. 1st mistake. He managed to trip over a tree root.
He screamed. Second mistake. He was sure that everyone in the forest would have heard that. He tumbled down a small hill and landed in a very small ditch. He screamed out again as he felt is ankle swollen against his shoe. He curled up into a ball and cried. He just wanted the pain to go away. Bertholdt was; sweating, shaking and still couldn't see properly. Not to mention he felt sick and light headed too.
"BERTHOLDT!!!"!He heard a flare gun go off as well as the steps of someone drawing nearer. He made a noise between a whimper and a pained gasp as someone put their hands on him. "Sorry." They replied. He felt his body moving. Bertholdt was now on his back, head tilted upwards and resting on something soft. His left arm was draped across his stomach as his right leg was extended away from the rest of his body.
He felt soft hands rub away the tears that danced on his pale cheeks. "I-I'm sorry." He spoke, voice hoarse. "Don't you dare apologise!" The voice replied. "Hmmm." Bertholdt answered back, loosing the battle of consciousness. "Hey. HEY!!! Don't close your eyes. Keep them open. The others will be here shortly.
As if on queue, he heard someone yell. "You found him!" The other person ran over to the both of them. "I saw your signal Eren." Oh. So his head was on Eren's lap. "Holy sh*t, you look awful Bertl." Ah. Now that was Reiner. He wanted Reiner to hold him close and tell him, 'It'll all be okay'.
He groaned and opened his eyes a smidge. "R-Rein-". "Shhh. It's okay. We need you to stay awake." Reiner said softly. "Now then. What hurts Bertl?" Bertholdt groaned, trying to form a sentence. "His right ankle is swollen, but that's all I know." Eren answered. Reiner shifted slightly and moved towards his ankle. It was puffy and very purpled. "Yeah, that's defiantly broken."
If matters couldn't get any worse, it began to rain. "What's the plan?" Eren asked. Reiner was quiet for a moment, before he said. "Let's go." Bertholdt gasped as he felt a pair of strong arm pick him up. He curled into the warmth and buried his face in the crook of Reiner's neck. He heard Reiner chuckle a little at the gesture.
Reiner starter to run, making sure Eren was behind him. "We're just gonna have to run." The wind swished past them as the rain hit their faces as they ran. "Bertl's condition is only going to worsen out here in the rain." Bertholdt was too exhausted to stay awake any longer. Renee and Eren made it out of the forest. "Sorry." He whispered, going limp in Reiner's arms. He saw a group of people up ahead shouting at him, but he submerged into the darkness.
Bertholdt groggily opened his eyes, groaning as he do so. Once his vision began to clear he realised he wasn't in his room. He was in the medical centre. He sat up - taking note at the numbness in his right leg - and looked out the window. He could see his comrades, no, his friends, laughing and having fun. He smiled as a light chuckle escaped his lips. "Bertl?!"
Bertholdt snapped his head around. Reiner was standing in the doorway, he had tears in his eyes and a grin on his face. "Hello Rein." He smiled back. Reiner walked in and sat on the bed facing Bertholdt. "Why didn't you tell me you we're feeling off?"
Both were silent for a minute. "I didn't want to be a burden." He looked down at his hands, to disappointed in himself to meet his best friends eyes. Suddenly, Reiner's arms wrapped around him. They stayed like that until Bertholdt said, "I'm okay." Reiner ended the hug and looked him straight in the eyes. "I know your not."
His breath hitched as his eyes filled with tears of sadness and happiness. Reiner pulled him close again, "Do you want to go outside?" Bertholdt shook his head. "Let's stay like this for awhile."
And that's exactly what they did.
