Minerva taught Potions for the first 7 years of her teaching career. She had increased her Potions Mastery to Level 3 under her mother's careful tutelage during that time as well. She had improved several more potions in those years. Her mother and her had worked jointly on a potions project and invented a quick acting poison repelling potion. It had been happily received by St. Mungos and had saved countless lives already. There would be no more bezoar stored in pockets of Emergency Medical witches and wizards!
Minerva had also worked on ways to help her friend Hagrid out financially. Her improvement potions had increased the need for unicorn tears. She had managed to convince the half giant to routinely visit the unicorn herd in the Forbidden Forest and collect them. The half giant had helped the herd with treating their sick and injured so they freely gave him tears. He then sold them to the local Apothecary. Eventually he managed to start collecting other hard to find ingredients without Minerva's suggestion.
"Are you ready to transition to the Transfiguration position," Albus asked her as she settled down in her chair next to his.
"Yes," she breathed happily. "We both know I prefer Transfiguration over Potions. While I enjoy working with potions, I adore Transfiguration."
"That you do my dear," he replied and then stood to make announcements to the incoming students. "This year we have some staffing changes to announce. First Professor McGonagall will no longer be teaching Potions."
Before he could continue, students cried out in frustration and disbelief. He saw dejected faces of students and it caused him to inwardly chuckle. The students adored her so. "Fear not," he added. "Professor McGonagall is merely switching departments. She will be taking over the Transfiguration position."
Cheers errupted in the hall and it warmed his soul. She had managed to charm students from all four houses and united them in justice. Granted there were still blood purists around and most likely would be for a long time to come but Minerva had changed so much by just being her loving self. He couldn't count the times he had walked in her office to see her hugging a student who needed a shoulder to cry on or advice about some situation or another.
During her 2nd year of teaching, Minerva had came to him and demanded a new class be added. She insisted on a Wizarding customs and traditions class be added for all muggle raised students. She also presented him with a revamped book for Muggle Studies she wrote in her spare time which she insisted be mandatory for all Wizard raised students. Competent teachers were found and both classes were hailed a success. There were less incidents of violence in the halls and he firmly believed it was due to those classes.
Minerva's third year of teaching saw her demanding Professor Cuthbert Binns lose his teaching position. She wanted to integrate a better view of other magical races within the student body and it wouldn't do to have him drone on and on about goblins and giants in the way he did. "How do you suppose we get him to stop showing up to teach?" he challenged her.
She smirked at him and raised her eyebrow up. He hated that look on her, he knew it always led to him feeling stupid about something. "We don't," she answered confidently. "We merely change the location of the History of Magic classroom and hire a competent teacher. Cuthbert Binns can continue his afterlife teaching and we both know he won't even miss the students' presence."
"Now that's a lovely idea," he had admitted then added. "You have a way of making me feel so inexperienced."
She had laughed and hugged the older wizard affectionately. "I have two lifetime worth of memories in my head. Well at least the memories of things I need to change. You seem to forget that at times, you old coot."
A smile graced the man's face as he returned her hug. "I grateful you are my daughter," he had said. The tears in her emerald eyes at that statement made him realize how much he had meant to her.
Shaking his thoughts, he focused on the present. "Professor Slughorn has came back from his sabbatical and graciously agreed to the Potions post," he said. "Lastly, this year we have added a few new activities. A new chess club has been added and will be spearheaded by myself. Both wizard and muggle chess styles will be available and taught to those that want to learn. A new football league has been added and will be open to all years. Professor Hooch has graciously accepted to cohead this league with our current Muggle Studies teacher Professor Smith. I encourage all students to participate and learn something new."
Excitement flooded the hall as students talked animatedly about the changes. Albus smiled fondly at his daughter-in-law. She had insisted he add a chess club for the less coordinated students. She insisted it would boost their self-esteem but would also give him more contact with the student body. He had agreed once she had handed him a detailed report of said club and how the funds would be available. "You are such a giving soul," he had whispered once he realized she was using her profits from her potion making royalties to fund everything. "A far better Lady than any I have ever met."
"You old coot," she had replied and hugged him tightly. He had ignored the tears she subtlety tried to hold back.
Minerva was sitting at her desk and smiled gently at her classroom. She had finished up teaching her first week of Transfiguration and she loved every minute of it. She had done a review on what the students knew and made notes on how to push them further. While she enjoyed Potions, Transfiguration remained her passion and was was grateful to be back where she felt most comfortable.
"Good evening Minerva," Albus said as he pressed a kiss to her forehead. "How was your first week teaching Transfiguration?"
"Magical," she breathed as she smile radiantly at him. "I feel at home. I love teaching Transfiguration."
"Being happy means a lot," he agreed. Albus smiled at her and laid a report on her desk. "I was merely curious."
Minerva read over the report, her eyebrows raised comically high as she read it. "Test scores were higher in my seven years than Slughorn's first seven years?" she asked.
"No," he replied. "The seven years you taught Potions the test scores were higher than the seven best years for Slughorn. I am curious of Transfiguration testing and will be monitoring that but now we need to solve how to maintain these high test scores now that we know the students are capable of it."
Flabbergasted she looked at the results and then back at Albus. "We start a mentor program," she recommended. "Have the best students from each house, for each year group, in each subject available for help," she explained. "I will oversee the group and work on finalizing the details. Can you have all of these reports available for all subjects so we we know what we are dealing with?"
"I will start immediately on them," he reassured. "Now go spend time with that son of mine."
"With pleasure," she grinned and bounced out of the room happily leaving Albus to close her classroom up for the night.
