KYOKA POV
It was finally here, the first day of classes at UA. Walking through the halls almost felt like a dream and not only because of the giant doors. I mean seriously is that even necessary? After wandering through the halls aimlessly for longer than I'd like to admit I found the door for Class 1-A. I took a deep breath as I opened the door. There were a few people already inside. A girl with pink horns was talking to a guy with red hair. There was what I assumed was a girl based on her uniform sitting in the front row. Nothing out of the ordinary except for the fact that she is invisible. Sitting in the back row was a guy with red and white hair. He had a scar on the left side of his face and next to him was… someone who was asleep.
I made my way to my desk according to the letter we received. I was going to be in seat twelve. I took my seat and set my bag next to my desk. I don't know why but something felt familiar about whoever was sleeping in the back. Slowly but surely more students started to come in and as luck would have it Kaminari was sitting right next to me.
"Universe, at this point I don't know if you're torturing me or sending me a blessing."
Before too long everyone in the class was in the room talking. Thanks to my jacks I was able to hear all the conversations. One that peaked my interest was between a girl and the guy in the first line of desks. Apparently they recognized the guy sleeping in the back of the class from the exam. The boy with blue hair was wanting to wake him up while the girl with the brown bobbed hair was trying to convince him not to. She was not doing a good job. It was obvious she wanted to see what would happen.
The boy with blue hair decided to approach him.
"Excuse me but you shouldn't be sleeping, class is about to start."
"He wasn't technically wrong but still let the guy get some rest."
The boy didn't answer verbally. He just raised an arm and flicked him off.
I let out a small. "I was not expecting that response. I think he and I would get along great."
The girl in the back broke out into laughter. "Again he did it to you again!"
"Alright, apparently this has happened before."
"Please stop this, I know you think it's funny but four times too much."
"Apparently this has happened four times now."
The boy raised his other hand and flicked him off with it as well.
"Scratch that, make it five now."
By this point the majority of the class was watching the interaction and either laughing or making comments about it.
"Alright that's enough, it's time for class to start."
"That voice… there's no way it couldn't be."
The class quickly quieted down and faced the front of the room… but no one was there. After a moment a man in a yellow sleeping bag appeared from behind the podium.
"I have several questions. The biggest is where did he come from?"
He stepped out of the sleeping bag and rolled it up. "My name is Shota Aizawa. I'm going to be your homeroom teacher, today is going to be a rather quick day. We're going to do introductions, then we're going to do a quirk assessment test, and after that we're going to the dorms you'll be staying at. The rest of the day will be spent setting up your rooms and getting settled in. All of you received a letter inviting your parents to come to the dorms tonight. This will give you all an opportunity to get to know each other better and put your parents' minds at ease since they will have an idea of who you will be living with for the next three years. Now let's get started, seat one front and center." He pointed in front of the podium.
"Oui." The boy stood up and made his way to the front. "I'm Yuuga Aoyama and my quirk is called naval laser. It's quite dazzling."
"I don't think he's really French."
The pink girl was next. "I'm Mina Ashido and my quirk is acid."
I held onto my jacks. "She's loud."
"I'm Tsuyu Asui, but please call me Tsu. My quirk is frog."
"She seems very nice."
The boy with blue hair made his way to the front. "I'm Tenya Iida and my quirk is engine."
"Why does he move like a robot?"
"I'm Ochako Uraraka and my quirk is zero gravity."
"She's really bubbly."
"I'm Mashirao Ojiro and my quirk is tail." He flexed his tail.
"Why do I feel like we're going to get confused about who people are talking to?"
"I'm Denki Kaminari and my quirk is electrification, it's quite shocking."
"What an idiot. But hey it's nice to have a familiar face."
The kid with red hair was next. "I'm Eijiro Kirishima and I strive to be a manly hero with my hardening quirk."
"I'm sure there's some kind of innuendo there."
"Manly hardening, your quirk makes you a walking hard on." A kid slightly behind me spoke up.
"Ding ding ding we have a winner."
The next person was extremely quiet. In all honesty I may have been the only one that heard him. "I.. I'm Koji Koda… and my quirk is an… anivoice."
"He's really shy, but he seems nice.
"I'm Rikido Sato and my quirk is called sugar rush."
"Those lips though."
The names Mezo Shoji and my quirk is called dupli-arms."
"I wonder what's behind the mask."
It was my turn next. As I stood in front of everyone I noticed the guy in the back still seemed to be asleep. "I'm Kyoka Jirou and my quirk is earphone Jack." As I made my way back to my desk I noticed that his hand tensed up for a moment.
"Hanta Sero and my quick is tape."
"I wonder if it's hard for him to buy shirts?"
A boy with a bird-like head was next. "I'm Fumikage Tokoyami and my quirk is dark shadow." A small shadow-like creature appeared from his stomach and waved before disappearing.
"That's awesome."
"Shoto Todoroki, half-cold half-hot."
"A man of few words I see."
"My name's Toru Hagakure and my quirk is invisibility, but I bet you never would have guessed that." She let out a small laugh.
"You don't say…"
"Katsuki Bakugo my quirk is called explosion."
"Oh that's gonna be an issue. But I wonder if he's related to the Bakugos that Izuku knew?"
"I'm Minoru Mineta and my quirk is pop off."
"He's really really short."
"My name is Momo Yaoyorozu and my quirk is creation."
"God damn those are huge."
The room was quiet as she sat back down. The last person didn't make their way to the front yet.
"Come on, we don't have all day." Mr. Aizawa sounded as if he was losing his patience.
The sound of footsteps echoed through the room as he made his way to the room. I don't know why but his presence felt familiar.
"I'm Izuku Aizawa."
"Izuku…" my eyes went wide as I saw who was standing in front of the class. "H.. how is this possible?"
"No." Mr. Aizawa was definitely annoyed now.
He let out a small laugh as he smiled. "Sorry Pops. I just couldn't help myself. I'm Izuku Midoriya and I'm quirkless."
IZUKU POV
Standing in front of my new class wasn't exactly what I thought it was going to be. The shocked reaction from saying I was quirkless was expected. What wasn't expected was two of them looking at me as if I had two heads. I took a deep breath and shrugged as I started to head back to my seat.
-Smack-
I could feel the lingering sting of smack across my face. The majority of the class gasped as Kyoka smacked me and stood blocking my way. I could see tears starting to form in her eyes.
"Damn!"
"Hey Kyo…"
-Smack-
"Daaamn!"
"Hey Jir…"
-Smack-
"Daaaaaaaamn!"
"... Bla…."
-Smack-
"Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn!"
I looked over to Kaminari. "Can you knock that off."
"Sorry…" He put his hands together and hung his head.
"Alright that's enough. Jirou, Midoriya you two stay here everyone go change into your gym uniform and wait outside."
Everyone quickly left the room leaving Pops, Kyoka, and myself.
Pops let out a sigh. "Can one of you please explain what that was all about? The last time I saw you two together you refused to leave his side and had to be dragged out of the hospital."
"How are you here Izuku? I thought you were dead!" She brought her hand back to smack me again.
I didn't flinch or answer her. I didn't know what to say.
Pops grabbed her wrist before she could smack me again. He shifted his glare towards me. "Why would you think that?"
"Because one day he just disappeared. The only thing he left was a note for me that said he was sorry and goodbye! His room was a mess! There were holes in the walls and the window was broken. There… there were dried blood stains all around the floor and desk." The tears started to run down her face.
His glare intensified onto me as he let go of her wrist, letting her arm fall to her side. "I'm sorry that he did something like that, but I'm going to have to ask you two to be civil during class. The two of you can work out whatever issues you have later, but for now keep the disruptions to the absolute minimum."
"Yes sir." She turned around and made her way to the door.
After she had left Pops turned towards me and didn't say a word as he started into my soul. "I can explain."
"Shhhh." A twisted smile came over his face. "I can't even begin to explain how pissed I am at you. So I'm going to give you some time to think about how to explain this to us."
I looked at him confused. "Us?"
"This Friday after class you, Emi, and I are going to have a nice little talk about what happened here today."
I started to sweat and shake. "Oh God, anything but that."
"You have five days to think about how you're going to explain this. Make good use of the time you have left."
I was frozen in place in fear as flashbacks of the last time I pissed off Mama Joke flashed in front of me.
Pops let out a sigh as he reached into his bag pulling out my old flask. "I don't know if I should give you this anymore but I'm sure you'll need it for tonight."
He put the flask in my hand and I quickly took a swig before putting it in my bag. "Thank you sir."
"Good now go get changed, I'm sure everyone is waiting for us."
I made my way through the halls to the locker room. As I was about to go in, the group of everyone who had left earlier was walking out. Well made awkward eye contact.
"Hey, would it be alright if I talked to Yaoyorozu for a moment?"
They looked at me confused for a moment before she stepped forward. "Sure but please make it quick. We shouldn't keep the teacher waiting."
The rest of the class started to make their way outside. "Sorry but I was wanting to ask you a couple questions?"
She looked at me skeptically. "Alright, but what could be so important that it can't wait till later?"
"It has to do with your quirk and the quirk assessment test." I put a hand behind my head. "I don't know if you can or are even willing to but could you make something that would reduce the volume of sounds. They would just need to cover her jacks and they don't need to be big. I'm sure just a simple wrap would do the job."
She raised an eyebrow at me clearly confused. "And why would I do that? We just met and you're already asking for favors, it's quite odd."
"You have no reason to. I just figured it wouldn't hurt to ask." I gave her a shrug.
She looked at me curiously. "Why do you think she needs something like that?"
"She has extremely sensitive hearing. I don't know if you noticed but every time someone would yell or raise their voice unexpectedly she would jump a little."
She narrowed her eyes. "How would you know that you kept your head down the entire time?"
"Just because I wasn't looking around doesn't mean I wasn't paying attention to my surroundings. Call it a sixth sense if you want."
She continued to look at me suspiciously. "Well what did you pick up on then?"
"The guy with the naval laser is way to into himself, about a fifth of the guys would rather keep to themselves until they get to know everyone better, the one in front of you is obsessed with women, and just from our conversation I think that based on your upbringing you think that everyone who wants to associate with you is really just wanting to benefit off of your name." I matched her gaze.
"Well I wouldn't say you were completely wrong about all of that, but still based on what happened in there I don't see why you would want to do something helpful for her?" She started to relax a little.
"Why not? We're going to spend the next three years together, so why wouldn't I try to make peace before it gets too far out of control." I turned to walk in the locker room. "But it's your choice, I won't hold it against you if you say no. I mean in all honesty I'd more than likely say no myself."
I let the door close behind me before she could respond. In the end it didn't matter if she gave them to her or not. I was sure Kyoka wouldn't accept them one she found out they were my idea.
After changing I made my way outside to see that everyone was waiting for an explanation of what the assessment test would entail. I stood towards the back of the group trying to not draw too much attention to myself, but that wasn't going to work since I could feel a pair of eyes on me.
I let out a sigh. "I knew this would happen eventually."
"Hey, Midoriya right?"
I stopped my train of thought while turning around to see Uraraka standing behind me. "Yeah, that's me."
"So I guess you're not going as 'no one' anymore." She gave me a smile.
"At least not for the moment." I looked over and saw Pops starting to walk towards us. "Is there something I can do for you?"
"I just wanted to thank you for saving me during the exam." She put her arms behind her back as she looked to the ground. "I don't remember how it ended, but when I came to I was told that a boy with green hair in a bun saved me and took me to the nurses office. I had a feeling it was you but when I got my acceptance letter it had a clip of you picking me up. Thank you, you saved me back there."
I couldn't help but let out a small smile. "It's nothing I was just doing what any decent person would do."
"Alright everyone's here so let's get this started. We're going to do eight different events. Each one will be scored and at the end we will see how everyone stacks up. The usage of quirks is permitted so use them to your advantage. Bakugo you're up." He tossed him a softball. "Throw that as far as you can."
He made his way to the circle and brought his arm back. Small explosions started to form in his palm. As he brought his arm forward a large explosion came from his palm as he threw the ball. "Go to hell!"
"Well I guess some things never change." I looked around the group as the ball sailed through the air. Some people had flinched at the sudden explosion while others remained calm. The biggest surprise was Kyoka, she was calm and didn't move at all. Looking closer I noticed she didn't even have any form of ear protection.
"Three hundred and seven meters. That's not bad." Pops pulled out his phone showing the class the score.
"Oh wow this looks like fun!" Ashido jumped a little clearly excited.
A small smirk formed on my face as I shook my head. "Now you've done it."
Pops looked over at her with a stern look. "If this is so much fun how about we make it into a little game?"
"Here he goes again."
"Whoever scores the lowest will be expelled on the spot. UA isn't like other schools, I can run classes however I see fit. I don't have time to train those who are talentless."
"He's not lying entirely, but it's still an obvious bluff."
The class was quiet for a moment before Uraraka spoke up. "Can you really do that?"
"Yeah he can." All eyes were on me. "I'm sure it's not the first time he's expelled someone on the first day."
He kept his eyes sharp as he looked at me. "No it's not and it won't be the last time I do it either." He pulled out another ball and tossed it to me. "Alright Midoriya you're up."
I made my way to the circle and tossed the ball in the air a few times before looking at Pops. "What's your record?"
"Sixty two meters."
I gave him a smirk as I prepared to throw the ball. "Then let's go for sixty three."
Throwing the ball as hard as I could wasn't nearly as impressive as the one before me, but it got the job done. As the ball sailed through the air I felt confident that I had done better than Pops.
"Fifty six meters."
"Shit…" I put my hands in my pockets as I turned around making my way back to the group.
The tests continued to go on. Each one I placed average when compared to people who's quirks didn't benefit them for the specific test. I wasn't worried about my placement. I knew Pops games.
"You seem rather relaxed for someone who may be on the brink of expulsion."
Looking to my side I saw Yaoyorozu approaching me. "And what makes you think I'm on the brink of expulsion?"
"This is a quirk assessment test. Not having one is putting you at a serious disadvantage."
"Normally I'd agree but I think it's giving me a small advantage."
She looked at me confused. "And why is that exactly?"
"Some quirks are naturally strong, but they have their natural limits. The true strength comes from how they use it." I gestured towards Shoji. "Take him for example. On the surface level his quirk looks just like multiple limbs. Cool yes, but how much do you think he could accomplish just with a few extra body parts?"
She took a moment to think. "He could do quite well in reconesense if they amplify his hearing and sight."
The two of us watched him as he created a few extra arms to help him in the grip strength test.
"See, he's thinking how can I use my quirk to potentially get a better score. If everyone did that I wouldn't stand a snowball's chance in hell. However..." I motioned towards Kaminari. " People like him make me look better. He has a naturally strong quirk but he's not thinking about how his quirk can give him an edge. What do you think he could potentially do to up his chances?"
We watched him do the grip strength test and just look disappointed at his score.
Yaoyorozu put a hand to her chin. "The items they're using for these tests use electronic sensors to sense pressure. He could easily just release a small amount of electricity and hope that it ups his score. But that would run the risk of frying it's circuits."
"So what if that happens? It shows he's trying to use his quirk in more than one way." I let out a small chuckle. "You know it's funny, everyone just assumes that their scores depend on how well they do in each event."
She let out a small laugh as well. "But he never told us how we'd be scored. Well just between us I highly doubt he's going to expel anyone."
"I'm glad someone came to the same conclusion as me."
She looked at me surprised. "Well it's good to know that I'll have one person who I can have intelligent conversations with."
"I couldn't agree more." I took a deep breath as I looked around the room. I noticed Kyoka quickly looked away when I came to her. "So Yaoyorozu, why did you actually come talk to me?"
She looked at me before looking back at the other students doing their tests. "What gave it away?"
"The fact that you started up a conversation out of the blue. Not once while we were in the classroom did you start a conversation everyone came to you."
She let out a sigh. "I wanted to tell you that she didn't need anything to reduce noise. Apparently she learned a way to reduce her enhanced hearing." She started to walk away. "Well I think it's my turn now, best of luck Midoriya."
The rest of the events went about how I expected them to. After an hour and a half all the events were done and the entire class was standing waiting to find out the results.
"Listen up, let's go over the results." Pops pressed pulled out a disk and it displayed everyone's place. "Hagakure, unfortunately you finished at the bottom of the class."
A few soft sniffles could be heard among a quiet chatter.
"As much as I hate to say it, no one is going to be expelled. Now go change and meet me back in class."
Everyone in the class was left confused as to what just happened, minus Yaoyorozu and myself. Everyone started making their way back towards the locker room when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around to see one of Kyoka's jacks on my shoulder.
"He.."
She quickly put the jack in front of my lips. "Shut up." She took a deep breath. "Tonight we're going to have a long talk."
"Al.."
"I said shut up." She pressed her jack to my throat. "My parents are coming tonight and they are in for one hell of a shock. Let's just do our best to get through the night with as little issues as possible." She pulled her jack away and walked to the locker room.
"It's going to be a long night."
I made my way into the locker room as I started to change. All the other guys had left already and were making their way back to class.
"What are you doing here?"
"I could ask you the same thing Deku, aren't you supposed to be dead?"
His voice had no malice or ill will which was different.
"Well for starters I never actually said I was dead." I started to take off my shirt.
"You're a real bastard for putting the old hag and old man through that. Do you even know how many nights I heard her crying? Do you even care about what you did to that extra with the nose?"
"Yeah I do feel bad about that, but Auntie Mitsuki and Uncle Masaru knew what was happening. The only reason they didn't tell you what was really going on was because I asked them not to. As far as Yukihira goes I didn't realize that it affected her that much. I thought she was like the rest of them who didn't care about me. Imagine the shock I was in when I ran into her last night." I let out a small laugh. "But you know what's even more shocking is the fact that it seems like you care about people now."
"The hell's that supposed to mean?"
I turned around showing the scar that was left on my chest. "One of our last interactions you left me with this, so forgive me for being surprised at the apparent change of heart." I threw on my shirt and buttoned it up. "Don't get me wrong, it's not like it's impossible for someone to have a change of heart. Hell you actually protected me the last time we saw each other." I threw on my blazer and headed towards the door. "But until I've seen enough to change my mind about you Bakugo, I'm going to keep my reservations about you."
"The hell did you call me?" He looked at me with wide eyes.
"You heard me Bakugo. We're way past that old nickname, but if it makes you feel better I'll call you it while we're around people."
"Do whatever you want Deku."
Today had not gone how I expected it to in the slightest. I was currently laying in my new bed waiting for the parents to get here. After Pops had explained the dorm's rules and where everyone's rooms are he left us to set them up. It didn't take long for me to get settled. It was nice having some time to get mentally prepared for the night. Taking another swig from my flask I stood up.
"Let's get this over with."
I made my way down the stairs to the common room. The noise was slowly getting louder as I got closer. When I turned the corner there were quite a few things that surprised me. The first being Auntie Mitsuki and Uncle Masaru talking to Kyokas parents as if they were old friends. The second being that Kyoka was wearing my favorite hoodie. "Well at least I know it's in good hands." The third thing that surprised me was Mika walking straight up to me.
-Smack-
"Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn!"
I shot a glare over to Kaminari and he quoted down. Letting out a small sigh I looked back at her. "Why is everyone slapping me today?"
She looked at me with a deadpan expression. "Seriously."
"Sorry Mrs. Jir…"
-Smack-
"I thought I made it clear last time to not call me that." She raised a jack threateningly.
I let out a nervous laugh. "I'm sorry Mika."
She gave a soft smile as Kyotoku put a hand on her shoulder. "Come on Mika let's not make a scene, this can wait till later. Let's all just enjoy the night." He shifted his gaze to me. "It's good to see you again." His voice was calm but there was a cold undertone to it. "You all have the day off Saturday so why don't you come over, we'd love to hear everything you've been through recently." He leaned in and whispered into my ear. "Just to let you know as a father I'm really tempted to beat you senseless for what you did to Kyoka, but man to man I'll pray for your safety because I've seen her snap solid steel with ease."
I nervously swallowed. "Thanks, I'll keep that in mind."
"Good, now I believe there's a few other people you need to talk to." He nodded towards Auntie Mitsuki and Uncle Masaru.
"Yeah." I looked over and saw a bone chilling smile. "It was good to see you again, Kyotoku and Mika."
They both nodded before walking back to Kyoka. I let out a sigh before making my way to Auntie Mitsuki. "Well here comes another slap to the face." Taking a deep breath I stood in front of them. "Hey."
I tensed up expecting another smack but surprised when I felt her arms embrace me. "I've missed you so much, Izuku."
Her arms tightened around me and I returned it. "I missed you too."
"So I finally met the girl." She let out a small laugh. "Did you tell her about your quirk yet?"
My eyes went wide. "Can we go outside?"
She gave me a disappointed nod. "Sure kid, I could use some fresh air." The two of us made our way outside and sat down in a couple of the chairs. "So why did you want to come outside?"
"As far as they all know I'm quirkless. I don't want them to know of my quirk… at least not yet."
She gave me a surprised look. "So you plan on telling them?"
"Yeah, if I can't trust people I won't be able to survive. I know it will take some time but I need to make a step in the right direction."
A tear started to run down her cheek. "I can't believe how much you changed in such little time."
"A change of environment can be helpful."
"Yeah it can be." She stood up and wiped away a tear. "Come on, let's go meet the rest of your class."
The rest of the night was fairly uneventful. I met Uraraka's parents. They were quite grateful that I saved their daughter during the exam. I didn't get to meet Yaoyorozu's parents since they were out of the country. She did ask why I flicked Iida off so many times. After explaining to her the history of the joke she just shook her head. Ashido and Hagakure seemed to be more curious about my hair than anything else. They were shocked when I told them the details of my hair care routine and even went as far to ask for help finding the right products. I wasn't opposed to helping but I was surprised to say the least. Ashido I could understand wanting it, but Hagakure was invisible so I didn't think it mattered that much. Well at the end of the day she is still a girl and all girls take pride in their hair. Lastly was Kaminari, I don't know why but he seemed to have an issue with me since the quirk assessment test. It wasn't a big issue. I was used to having people not like me. The real issue I had was how he tried to stick to Kyokas side the whole night. I let out a sigh as I laid down on my bed thinking about the events that happened during the welcome party. A small knock on the door reminded me that I still had one more conversation to be had before the day could end. Answering the door I saw Kyoka standing there with a guitar in her hand.
"Hey."
She walked in without saying a word. She sat down on my bed and started to look around the room. I let out another sigh as I closed the door. She took a deep breath as I sat down in the desk chair.
"You get one chance to tell me what the hell is going on and I swear to God if you lie to me everyone is going to know what kind of person you are."
I reached into my drawer and pulled out my flask. "Where do you want me to start?"
She eyed my flask and felt my hand tremble. "You still drink?"
"Not anywhere near as much. Mainly just when
I know things will be extremely stressful or to celebrate." I set the flask down on the desk. "I'm trying to not drink unless it's absolutely necessary but it's a lot harder than I thought it would be." I let out a nervous laugh.
She looked at the flask then back to me. "Well that's good at least." She narrowed her gaze back to me. "So why did you do it?"
I started to reach for the flask but stopped myself. "I was being selfish and there's no excuse for that." I took a deep breath. "I don't know where to start so I guess I'll go to the beginning. After the night we had dinner I was so happy to know that someone believed me. Your family was so kind and they even offered to help me out with music. It felt like a dream. But not too long after that I was given the option to be trained to try and be a hero. It was my dream ever since I was a kid. I was so happy that I finally had a choice to make for a future career, but it also put me in a spot I had never experienced before. I had to make the choice."
"So you chose to go for the hero course."
"No."
"She looked at me confused. "What do you mean no, you're here now aren't you?"
"Yeah I am, but it wasn't my first choice. I actually wanted to stay and do music." I scratched the back of my head. "I thought that life would be more fun with the potential of doing music with you and that it was worth the risk."
She looked at me skeptically. "So what happened?"
"After we ran into Tsubaki I felt like I wouldn't bring anything but bad luck for you. The voices would constantly tell me that I wasn't good enough and that you deserved better, at some point I started to believe it." I took the flask and finally took a swig. "I tried to ignore them but then one day in class some people came up and questioned me about you. They kept saying disrespectful things about you that I snapped. It was the first time I stood up to any of them."
She raised an eyebrow. "What does that have to do with you leaving?"
"I'm getting to that… there was a lot that happened so I wanted you to understand everything that led to it." I took a deep breath. "After that I had a huge surge of confidence. As I made my way home I ran into All Might. He was chasing a villain through the sewers and had just captured him. I decided to use the confidence I had and ask him my biggest question."
"What did you ask him?"
"I asked if someone who was quirkless could be a hero. He told me that it was impossible. I was crushed, I was hoping he could give me some hope as well. Looking back at it I shouldn't have been mad or surprised. He was being honest and trying to keep me safe in his own way."
She narrowed her eyes. "All of this is interesting but you still haven't told me why you left. The only answer you've given is that you were being selfish."
I let out a sigh. "Well that encounter sent me into a spiral. I got home and started to throw out anything hero related out the window as well as punching a few holes in the wall of an old All Might poster I had. The voices wouldn't shut up and I was ready to end it all." I could see a look of horror in her eyes. "Well I was too much of a coward to go through with it, but I still felt it would be best if I just disappeared. I didn't think anyone would miss me and those that did would forget about me completely." I took a deep breath. "In short I chose to leave to say fuck you to the people that never believed in me and I left because I thought you deserved better than a fuck up like me. I thought your life would be better without me."
She took a deep breath and let go of the neck of the guitar. "You really are an asshole, you know that."
"Yeah I've gotten that a lot."
"So where did you go?" She started to relax a little.
I scratched the back of my head. "I'm actually not supposed to make this known because of things it could imply, but I moved in with Mr. Aizawa."
She looked surprised. "I wasn't expecting that."
"Yeah, but you can't tell anyone he and the school could get in a lot of trouble if it's found out by the people in the general courses that didn't pass the hero course entrance exam."
She let out a sigh. "Yeah I understand." I noticed her hands tighten. "The voices… do you still hear them?"
"Constantly." I met her eyes and they went wide. "But they're not as loud anymore. The last time they were an issue was right before the entrance exam."
"Oh… well that's good." She put her head down but I could see a faint smile. "And what about.. you know?"
Leaning back in my chair I stared at the ceiling. "It's been about a year since my last major relapse so I'd say I'm doing relatively good."
"What happened to you? You're nothing like I remember."
I let out a nervous laugh. "A lot of therapy and self evaluation. Also a change of scenery doesn't hurt." I looked towards the ground. "Do you like the new me?"
"I don't know yet…" She took a deep breath. "You never told me about Tsubaki, what's the story?"
"Tsubaki… God, that's someone I'd be more than happy to forget."
She looked at me confused. "What do you mean?"
"Because she was a total bitch." I stood up and walked to the glass door leading to the balcony. "Back in elementary school she was the one of the few people that didn't bully me. She never spoke to me but that was better than being insulted. So one day I decided to talk to her thinking maybe we could be friends. I thought it would be nice to just have one friend but that wasn't in the cards. She turned out to be one of the worst out of all of them. She wasn't as verbal as the rest but she enjoyed playing mind games. Honestly the day she left was one the best days of my life."
My phone started to ring on the desk. I walked over and looked at it and saw that Yukihira was calling. "Shit why now?" I looked over at Kyoka and she just nodded.
"Go ahead, I don't mind."
I put my phone to my ear to answer the call.
"Hey I'm busy at the moment, can I call you back later?... I'm not sure it's really important…. I'll call when I'm done, just please give me a few minutes…. Alright thanks, I'll talk to you soon."
I hung up the phone and sat back in my chair.
"Sorry about that."
"Who was that?" She looked at me curiously.
"Yukihira…"
"THE GIRL FROM THE RESTAURANT!" Kyoka quickly covered her mouth after interrupting me. "Shit that was loud."
I couldn't help but laugh a little. "It's fine, I spent most of the day soundproofing my room. I highly doubt anyone heard anything." Now it was my turn to look confused. "So you know Yukihira?"
"Know her, not at all. But I did meet her once. It was right after you left, my parents decided for us to go out to dinner. We just so happened to go to their restaurant and she ran up to me thinking it was you. She had smelt your jacket. We ended up leaving because I didn't want to remind her anymore of you." Kyoka gritted her teeth. "Why does she have your number? Why did she know you were alive before me!?"
"It was one of those moments of being in the right place at the right time. Last night I went to the park where we met to clear my head before today. When I was on my way back we ran into each other. I honestly wasn't expecting her reaction. I gave her a watered down version of everything. As I was trying to leave she insisted that we exchanged numbers."
Kyoka looked at me disapprovingly. "So you were in town and you didn't think about telling me that you were alive!?"
"I never stopped thinking about it." I took the rubber band out of my hair letting it fall down. "You were always on my mind." I tossed the rubber band to her.
She picked it up and I saw tears form in her eyes. She was holding a smaller version of the rubber band she gave me the first day we met. Mama Joke was able to find them thanks to the help of a few of her students.
She squeezed the rubber band tight in her hand. "Why didn't you ever come tell me that you were ok?"
"I was being selfish again. By the time I was confident enough and felt prepared to do it I was too scared to face you. I didn't want to reopen old wounds and cause you even more pain. But I guess it doesn't matter anymore since we're here now."
"Still it would have been nice to have known."
"I'm sorry."
She took a deep breath. "You know we're going to have to go through all of this again with my parents right?"
"Yeah."
"Alright well it's getting late and I'm sure it's going to be a long day tomorrow so I'm gonna go to bed." She stood up and made her way to the door.
"Kyoka wait!"
She stopped and looked at me.
"There's something I need… no, something I want to tell you."
She let out a sigh as she made her way back to my bed. "Alright let's hear it."
"I'm not actually quirkless."
"Whaaat? No waaay!" She rolled her eyes at me. "No shit I've known that since the first time you told us you told us you were quirkless."
I scratched the back of my head nervously and laughed a little. "I probably should have realized that."
"Yeah you should have." She looked around the room. "So why are you telling me this?"
"I have major trust issues and my therapist said I should try and tell one person in the class that I'm actually not quirkless."
"So you chose me because I more than likely already knew you were lying."
"No, I chose you because I trust you." She looked at me stunned. "Well I'm going to put my trust in you. It's a process and I'm working on it. At some point everyone will know I'm not quirkless, but I'm not ready for that yet."
"That's really embarrassing."
I couldn't help but laugh. "Yeah I know, but hey it's supposed to help."
She let out a little laugh before collecting herself. "Why do you tell everyone you're quirkless?"
"Because I wished I was never born with it."
"Is it really that bad?"
"No…. it's worse." I could see her hands start to shake. "Well at least I think it is."
I could tell she was nervous. This wasn't an easy conversation to have but it was one we needed to have, that I needed to have. After taking a minute to compose herself she finally asked the question.
"What… what is your quirk?"
I took a deep breath as I grabbed my flask and handed it to her. "You may need some of this." She reluctantly took the flask but didn't drink from it. "My quirk let's me make people relive their worst memories and make them worse if I want to. I also see what happens as if I was there."
She was speechless. I wasn't surprised though, it's normal to be shocked by a quirk like mine.
"Can I see it?"
Now it was my turn to be shocked. I looked at her completely dumbfounded at what she just asked. "Are you serious?"
"Yes, I want you to use it on me."
"Out of the question. That's not happening."
"And why not?"
I looked towards the window. "You don't know what my quirk can do and the effects it can have. I don't want to put you at risk."
She let out a sigh before falling back on my bed. "I don't care about the risk. I just want to understand why you hide it so much."
I let out a sigh as I stood up and sat next to her on the bed. "Is there any specific memory you want or do you want me to pick?"
She sat up and looked at me confused. "Does it really matter?"
"Yeah, if it's one you tell me I'll know what to pick and it will allow you to mentally prepare yourself."
She took a moment to think before looking away. "I want you to see what you put me through the day I found out you left."
"Alright." I took a deep breath as I started to remove a contact from my eye.
"You wear contacts?"
"As of recently, yes. I have great eyes but it helps conceal my quirk."
"How so?"
"Just watch." I closed my eyes letting out a sigh. "I hope you don't regret this."
"I won't."
When I opened my eyes I could see the orbs floating around her. Thankfully there weren't many. I noticed a shocked look on her face. "It's the eye isn't it?"
"Yeah, but why is it black?"
"My eyes turn black and allow me to see the orbs floating around whoever I choose. When I pick an orb that's how the memory is triggered."
"So the contacts keep your eyes hidden."
"Yeah, quirkless people's eyes don't change color." I let out a nervous laugh.
"Yeah, I guess so." She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
"Last chance to back out, are you sure you want to do this?" She nodded as she closed her eyes. "Alright." I found a blue orb that had a title attached to it.
~I found myself standing in front of my old apartment complex. Kyoka was standing at the door knocking. I could see the desperation in her eyes. Uncle Masaru opened the door and her face turned to confusion. Looking through the door I saw Auntie Mitsuki waking up before collapsing to the ground in tears. I felt my heart start to ache, I didn't know how much pain I had caused them. We made our way through the hall and stopped at my room. Watching Kyoka walk into my room and find the letter wasn't easy to watch, but it didn't end there. It was heartbreaking watching her breakdown in tears as she screamed and begged for someone to tell her it wasn't true. "I really fucked up."~
The two of us were back in my room and she was starting to hyperventilate. I quickly brought her into a hug trying to calm her down. "It's alright Kyoka, I'm here."
After a minute she brought her breathing back to normal. She pulled away from me and moved away from me. "You didn't change it… why not?"
"I couldn't do that to you, I hate messing with people's memories, especially yours."
She let out a sigh. "I can understand that, well at least now I have an understanding of why you don't tell people you have a quirk." She looked me in the eyes for the first time since coming back from the memory. "Why are you crying?
I quickly wiped my face. I was so concerned with making sure Kyoka was alright that I didn't even realize the tears running down my cheeks. "How could I not cry after seeing exactly what I put you through."
"Well atleast I know you still have a heart." She let out a little laugh.
We sat in an uncomfortable silence for a few minutes. Both of us didn't know what to say or do.
"Where are you parents?"
"Can we not talk about that right now." I put my hands together, tightening them. "Can we wait till Saturday, I'm sure your parents will probably ask and I'd rather not have to tell that story more than I have to."
She nodded as she stood up. "Well it's late and we're both emotionally exhausted so I'm gonna go to bed."
"Alright, but what about your guitar?" I motioned to it lying on the bed.
"That's not mine, it's yours, remember." She turned around and started to twirl her jack around her finger. "I'll give you your jacket back after I wash it."
I picked up the guitar and started to play a little. It felt good to have it in my hands again. As I played I could see her body perk up a little in surprise. "You know I could probably use a few more lessons." I let out a laugh as I continued to play. "But you should keep the jacket, it looks better on you. And besides everyone has already seen it on you, we don't want to draw more attention to us then we have too."
She sent a jack out and pressed it to my throat. "What did I tell you about lying to me?" She stared daggers through me. "Did you really think I wouldn't notice the fact that you just casually started playing as if it was second nature?"
I put my hands up defensively. "I'm sorry."
She let out a giggle as she retracted her jack from my throat. "Well at least one thing I told you didn't fall on deaf ears. But you're probably right about the rest of the class. They probably already have a ton of questions since I slapped you. Also sorry about that."
"Don't be, I deserved it."
"You know I did have one question about that."
I looked at her confused. "What's that?"
"Well you were starting to say my name." She tapped the tips of her jacks together. "But the last time wasn't either of my names. I was curious as to what you were going to say."
"Oh that." I scratched the back of my head. "I was going to call you blackberry."
Her face instantly turned red. "You really are an idiot you know." She turned around to face the door as she took a deep breath. "Hey… why do you still call me by my first name?"
"Well you told me to, but besides that you were my first real friend so you're special to me."
She let out a sigh. "Well I don't mind if you call me that in private but while we're around the class just call me Jirou."
"Uh yeah.. sure… I can do that."
She started to stretch. "Well I'm gonna go to bed. Goodnight Midoriya."
That stung. I had assumed she would still use my first name in private as well, but I guess I was wrong.
"Goodnight Kyoka."
