Ever since that nudge Sabo's life began to fast forward. He spent his time being trained by Katakuri and Smoothie, combat wise and haki control. Getting into spats and arguing with Cracker and Oven, but enjoying them secretly as he loved bristling the older men's skin. Playing around with Flambe and Pudding, the latter had begin to latch to Sabo after one potentially serious discussion with Pudding.
Pudding sat there tears threatening to spill from her eyes, hands covering her forehead, and her face reflecting that of horrified pain.
Sabo was afraid he had pushed her too hard and that she had hit her head, he hadn't wanted her to go and whine to one of the older brothers or sisters. He also didn't like crybabies. He inched towards her, "Pudding, you alri-"
"Get away from me," She pressed her back firmly against the wall, her figure trembling and anxiously trying to create a little more space between her and Sabo.
He frowned, he really didn't know what could have caused the sudden shift in the mood for Pudding, it was weird and he wanted to chalk it up to her just being a . . girl, but it didn't sit ok with doing that. "What's wrong?"
Pudding sniffled, trying her best to hold back her tears, "Y- you saw it didn't you?" Sabo tilted his head confused at her accusation. "Don't act stupid! You saw it, I know you did." His face hadn't changed from confusion.
Sabo mind was spinning circles trying to understand the poor crying girl, maybe she was just speaking hysterical because she hit her head too hard, "Your head doesn't hurt?"
"NO! Why are you acting like this? I know you saw it!" Her voice becoming shrill as the lump in her throat only swelled/
"Saw what?!" But before he continued, he took a deep breath, it wouldn't do good for both of them to become worked up. He felt better knowing she wasn't in pain, at least in physical pain. He sat there for a few seconds, his hand on his chin before glancing at her hand, "Wait do you mean your eye?" At the hesitant nod, Sabo continued, "Yea I saw it. Did you get poked in it or something? Is there hair in it?!" He asked worriedly.
Pudding stopped trembling, but instead her body went a bit laxed. "Eh?" Her hand loosened its pressure from her forehead, "Y-you're not scared? It's not weird? You're not disgusted?"
Sabo stared at her as if she was dumb, "Why would I be scared of an eyeball, I would just fight it if it scares me." He blinked at the girl once more because she wasn't making sense. "Yea it's weird." Pudding felt her heart stop for a moment, "But disgusted? No, I have an eye too, why would I be disgusted?"
Pudding stared at Sabo's forehead, searching for an eye. " . . . An eye where?"
He pointed at his sockets, "These two," Pudding spit taked, "Just because you have three doesn't mean it's disgusting, it's just another eyeball, gahahahaha." He let the laughter roll out of his stomach.
Pudding stared at the boy for a while before reluctantly removing her hand, "So it doesn't bother you?"
Sabo shook his head and looked up at Pudding before gasping causing Pudding to react in fear, in case he wanted to take his statement back. "Pudding you're crying."
"Eh?" She felt something tickle her cheek before dropping on her hand, she had been crying. She hadn't even noticed, she touched her cheeks in confirmation and before she could wipe them, she simply broke down.
He looked at the girl and decided to wait letting her have her moment.
Whilst Pudding clung to Sabo's side because she had developed a brotherly attachment to him, Flambe hung around for the simple fact the boy was around her age and handsome. He spent the other parts of his time being tutored by snack and perospero as they were the most knowledgeable. In his rare leisure time, Sabo found himself either dazing out into something or surprisingly seeking out Big Mom or Katakuri. His relationship with Katakuri had grown tremendously as he was the first Sabo had met and leaned on and one defining moment that had caused the older man to become doting towards the boy.
Katakuri was enjoying his solitude during his snack time, it was the only period where he could get away from his siblings, subordinate, and responsibilities. However, he didn't do it alone because it offered him peace of mind, no, he did it because his mouth had freaked countless others out. To the point he had to beat some kids senseless for talking about his deformity, but he soon regretted it when his sister had to take the backlash for his actions. To avoid future problems, he adorned a scarf around his mouth and ate in secrecy.
Also it may have come to a complete shock but Katakuri loved sweets. He was a sweet addict almost as much as Mama, and donuts had quickly become his favorite sweet treat. Currently, he was enjoying his plight in gorging down donuts and other sweet treats, but a voice halted him in his activities.
The penalty for seeing his mouth was death for his subordinates. He didn't care, however, he was stilled when it was a voice he quickly recognized.
"Shut up, let go of me. I just need to talk with Kuri really quick." The voice was brazen and smooth, but loud nonetheless.
"We understand, but you can't go in there, it's for your own safety, Sabo-kun." One of his subordinates tried to quell the young boy.
'Ah Sabo', katakuri found himself thinking, but at least he was almost done with his snack time so he should be able to talk to the boy after snack time was over. What he saw next made him choke on his next bite.
The boy was standing in front of him, eyes widened with surprise and almost . . . anticipation, dare he say.
Katakuri felt a flare of rage, mainly at his subordinates who had so easily let the child into the room, but his anger quickly subsided and was replaced with a feeling of angst as he stared back at the young boy. He had surely watched Katakuri devour that donut and was currently looking at him now.
He didn't know how the boy would react to him, how he would treat him, or how he would . . see Katakuri after this. No he wouldn't dare say he was scared of the boy's reaction, but he was slightly nervous as he slowly dreaded all the thoughts that flooded his mind.
"What are y-" Katakuri question was cut by Sabo's voice.
"COOOOOOLL" His eyes gleamed at Katakuri's mouth, resembling that of stars, "So cool, freaking lucky. I'm jealous." Katakuri was speechless.
"Cool?" He questioned, confused and confounded.
He nodded frantically, "Your mouth can grow large and you could eat so much food so fast that way." He motioned his hand wide as if portraying how big the food could be or how big the mouth could stretch. Katakuri wasn't sure.
The older man gave a wry smile that translated into a genuine one as relief washed over his shoulders, "idiot."
Sabo only smiled in response before his face snapped back to normal, "oh yeah, I-"
Although he wouldn't admit it, Sabo had found himself comfortable with the crew and it unsettled him. He had nightmares every once in a while, some about his hometown while others dared to be about the Revolutionaries. Every once in a while he'd question if they would ever come for him, it had been nearing a year since he'd been with Dragon and slowly by the fleeting day he yearned to stay with them a bit more.
Sabo was on his way to Big Mom's room to once again listen to the 'old hag' (Although she wasn't very old yet and still looked quite youthful) Ever since hearing her dream, he had enjoyed being in her company as if the relevance had created a sense of liking.
"Tell me Big Mom, I won't be mad. Why am I here?" Sabo glared up into two daunting eyes that looked down at him with indifference and contemplation.
The figure simply shifted back into her chair for a more comfortable situation, she sighed looking down at the boy who had been nurtured under her observation. She smiles.
He flinches back at the sudden affectionate notion, his eyebrows furrowing to show his confusion.
"Sabo, I see you as my own child. My crew. My . . "
'"Family", Sabo knew what she was going to say and the word sent a silent shock through his body, giving an electric twinge to his brain. 'Family,' he repeated to himself
He stared back at the figure, thoughts, emotions, flashback scratching at his brain. He felt nauseous it was hard to stand, 'family, family, family,' the word repeated itself over and over. The Bandits flashed in his head, Dandan, Dragon and the revolutionaries, Luffy and Ace. He didn't know what was happening anymore, his mouth opened shaky to continue, "I-"
"So call me Mama." She smiles down at him as if he really did come out of her own womb. Big Mom understood just how attached all of her children became to Sabo, as she herself slowly became attached as well. At some point she forgot her original reason and wanted the young boy as part of her crew. She enjoyed and thrilled in watching the boy.
The word seemed to hone Sabo back to reality, "M-Mama?" He had to admit a warm feeling emitted from his chest after giving in to the wishes of the woman. It felt like he had admitted it, admitted something and there felt a weight off his chest.
Sabo forgot why he had came.
Once he reached the door, he was reaching for the handle before he heard another voice in the room which caused him to pause. He didn't want to be rude and barge recklessly into the room, and he didn't want to eavesdrop but he heard the voice purely by coincidence.
"Big Mom, the revolutionaries have yet to claim the boy, it's my turn." The voice sounded familiar, so so familiar, Sabopressed his ear closer to the door trying to hear the conversation.
There was a bit of silence, before a listle rustle, "I am a woman of my word," more silence followed that statement, "but isn't there something else you'd rather settle on."
The voice sounded as though it was through a den den mushi, "Nonsense, nothing else will do and nothing else will satisfy. I'll be here tomorrow."
"Tomorrow? Mm," There was a disappointed sigh, "Why are you so interested and curious?"
"I could be asking you the same couldn't I? Why can't you let go?"
Big Mom laughed her normal laugh that caused a stir in Ace's rhythm, "Fair point, fair point. But I'm serious, tell me why do you want the boy so bad?" Sabo froze.
A laugh erupted from the other end, a laugh Sabo didnt recognized. He felt the room spin and easily lost his footing and fell to his butt before scooting closer to the door.
Sabo felt sick to his stomach and a lump formed in his throat, he struggled to stand using the wall for assistance. He had to go now. He didn't look back, he simply left Big Mom's room and when he was able to he started to run back to his room. Once he arrived, he slammed the door and begin digging frantically through his drawers, throwing what he needed and what he found into a bag.
His heart was racing, he could barely think straight, his thoughts were swirling, the only words that rang through his head was, 'leave, leave, leave now, leave.' A knock at the door pulled him from his thoughts.
He glanced at the door, dread filling his being, starting at his feet. He had expected Kuri or maybe Smoothie, but instead light brown hair filled his view and without realizing he let out a relieved sigh.
"Sabo? What are you doing?" Pudding glanced around quizzically at the clothes all scattered about on the floor. "A trip?"
Sabo went back to packing and nodded his head, "Yes, i'm going on a trip." He put shorts in the bag and felt a pang of guilt in his chest, before looking at Pudding. "I probably won't be coming back from this trip." He mumbles quiet enough for the air to eat the words.
"Eh?" She stopped to stare at the bag and then him, "What? WHY?"
He held a solemn look, "It's not safe for me here anymore."
Pudding balled her fist, "I'm sorry for all the mean things I've said to you. I won't play anymore pranks on you, I'll spend more time with you than any of my other siblings," Tears started to pour down all three of her eyes, "Please don't go Sabo. I like you being here. Please."
"Sorry Pudding." He left no room for shame or guilt tripping him into staying, because it would put his own life and freedom at risk. However he bent down to the younger girl and plucked her forehead, "Don't cry. I don't like cry babies."
Pudding immediately stopped crying as if that would make the boy stay longer, realizing that it would she bit her lip in reluctance, "Wait. I wanted to give y-you something." She said in between sniffs and snot.
"What is it?" He eyebrow raised.
She pulled a brace out that was orange and danced with a red insigma, "I got this made for you because I know you had always been a little conscious of your hands, why? Im not sure but I got this." She forced herself to smile through her tears.
Sabo was hesitant to grab the newly revealed gloves but he did and put it into the bag, before pulling the young girl, who had come to view as a little sister, into a hug. "Thank you Pudding. I love you."
More tears fell down the younger girls face although she tried to fight it, "I love you too," After pushing him away towards the door with great reluctance she murmured out, "I'll see you AGAIN." The statement wasn't a question but instead a statement, she would someday see him again. "You will always be my brother."
Sabo smiled.
"We will bring you back." She stated quietly to herself.
He had been sailing for nearly 2 days, and it was nearly impossible for him to sleep with how much his mind had wandered from subject to subject. What had been Big Mom's expression when she noticed he wasn't there anymore? Did Pudding say anything? all the countless goodbyes he wasn't able to say.
He stared out into the open sea, unsure of what to do or how to feel. The more he thought about certain scenarios, the more he could push his feelings down or away. His mind lulled itself into deep thought with the help from the rock of the waves. He had still no contact with or had lost his brothers, he wasn't sure if Luffy or Ace were alive, and for that matter where they were. He wasn't sure if he still had a reason to live. If he was allowed to live at the expense of his brother's lives. His heart began to race as his mind attempted to race faster. It took him laying on his back, with his chest heaving for air for him to realize he had been panicking. He quietly counts to 10 and draws circles in his hand, a trick Ace taught him when he had similar problems earlier. As he was working on that he felt a bump under his boat which caused him to rock to the other side.
The Doctor was meaning to blow some steam off a deal that hadn't gone through, he was supposed to see if he'd be able to manufacture an artificial devil fruit and the fruit he'd be using for testing was the Mera Mera no Mi. When he heard that the fruit had been stolen, to say that he was enraged was an understatement, but imagine his feeling when he had heard from Big Mom, who was severely interested in the doctor's experiments, that they found a boy who possessed the revolutionaries qualities. Exemplary! However, another bump activated within the doctor's plans when he heard that Doflamingo had gotten his hands on the boy, he knew how stubborn the man could be and how protective of his family he is, if the boy was truly a part of the family. He also didn't want to cross the once celestial dragon, because Doflamingo had been a strong support within his experiments. So he was going to settle for just test runs and check ups, maybe a blood sample, but then he had heard from Big Mom she somehow got her hands on the other boy, how? Vegapunk didn't know but he didn't care for miniature details, he had his experiment in grasp once more even if he'd only be able to conduct some for a year. However, Big Mom had become attached to the boy as well and began acting stingy with the boy's well being. Going so far as to cancel the deal she had made with the doctor, he truly couldn't get behind the nerve of people. He had his spirits up because he was excited about this experimentation for once. But now it was a no go, so the doctor had turned to releasing some steam. But now . . .
Vegapunk was staring at the unconscious child in his submarine, his blonde hair curling messily to his face and his skin giving a gorgeous peachy tone, almost glowing. The boy had been on the boat that he had sunken.
Maybe god has not betrayed him after all, the boy matched looked akin to a noble, and god knows how much Vega loved them, they were rich. He could only guess that the boy had been trying to run away, which was the reason he had been on the boat alone. He quickly clamped the chains on to the boy's ankles and wrists. By doing that the boy's physical body wouldn't escape, he wouldn't move, he was Vega's sitting bank after all!
He wasted no time plugging IV's of anesthesia into the boy, making sure he'd stay sedated long enough until they reached the laboratory.
