Prologue: Yesterday's Life

"Hey! Hey kid! Wake up!"

A rather large group of people were hovering around a lifeless young girl, maybe in her early twenties. Her brown hair, like the rest of her body, was soaked.

"That's the girl who went missing two days ago." Someone said as people gathered around the body.

A tall, strong lifeguard ran over to the almost lifeless body. "Everyone back up, give her some space. How long has she been here?" He asked the man in his mid fifties.

"I don't know. I saw her floating in the water a few minutes ago," he answered. As the head lifeguard, who's name tag read "Adri" lay down beside the girl, the man continued. "I think this is the girl who went missing. Who fell into the bay during the Golden Gate Disaster a couple days ago.

The lifeguard raised his eyebrow. "That seems pretty unlikely." He said, pushing the hair out of the girls face. Then, he noticed something. Something that seemed to be impossible, especially if the girl was the one the man had mentioned. She was breathing, ever so slightly. Clinging to life. But how?

Adri thought he may have been imagining this, so he put two fingers to one of the girl's wrists in an attempt to find a pulse. Sure enough, one was there. "How on Earth is she still alive?" He said aloud in disbelief.

The group of people around them was starting to get very crowded to the point where the head lifeguard came by and told everyone to get out of the way. "Let's get her out of here."

Before we get into this, you should know something. The girl laying in Adri's arms was Beca Mitchell, a twenty-two year old born and raised in the city by the bay. She had just graduated college and was in the process of finding a job when it happened. By it, we mean the Golden Gate Disaster.

It was just like any normal day, Beca was on her way to her first big job interview after graduating from college. She was heading up to the northern end of San Francisco, but the traffic was slow on the Golden Gate Bridge. The young woman was looking to be a music producer, it had been her dream since she was a kid.

She was currently using the Bluetooth phone in her car to talk to her best friend and college roommate Chloe. "God, the traffic here is always ridiculous."

"Tell me about it," Chloe chuckled. "The one nice thing about working the morning shift is that the traffic is slightly less bad." She was working as a barista in a coffee shop for the time being, but she wanted to become a veterinarian. She had just gotten into vet school and was starting in the fall. "What time is your interview?"

"2:30," Beca answered as she got through the toll booth and onto the bridge. "I'm kind of nervous," she admitted after a moment of silence. "I really don't want to mess this up."

"Don't worry, Becs. You got this." Chloe said. "You're the best musician I've ever met, they'd be dumb not to hire you."

"You always say stuff like that." Beca said with a blush.

"Yeah, because it's true," Chloe replied. "You are incredibly talented at what you do, and your passion for this is what will set you apart from the other candidates. I believe in you."

"Thanks Chlo," Beca said, smiling. "Alright, I'm getting on the bridge, so I'm going to lose you. But I'll be over at yours and Derek's place for dinner later, okay?"

"Okay. Good luck at the interview!"

"Thank you. Talk to you later." Beca ended the call after that, turning her attention to the road. The pace of traffic had picked up a little since she got onto the bridge, which was her favorite part of the drive into downtown San Francisco.

After hanging up, Beca turned on some Beatles. They were her favorite band. Her inspiration after all these years to keep up with her music dream.

The one weak link in the traffic flow was a semi-truck that was driving slowly. Beca tried to pass it when the truck suddenly stopped. She didn't have enough time to react and rear ended it. "God damnit," the brunette groaned, putting her car in park and getting out to survey the damage.

She took a look at the semi first. Fortunately, there was only a dent where the front of her car met the back of the truck. Then, Beca looked at her car. The left headlight was busted and the front bumper was a bit crooked. "Shit. That's just what I need."

Beca was still paying off her student debt, and this would cause her to dip into what little savings she had. She then ran up to the passengers side of the truck as other cars maneuvered around the little accident. "Hello?" She knocked on the window, but before anyone opened, a large popping sound came from the back of the truck, shaking the bridge.

Beca held onto the side of the truck as the bridge shook. "What the hell?" She said to herself. The brunette started walking towards where the sound had come from to investigate, a decision that turned out to be an almost fatal mistake.

Almost as soon as she opened the door, another popping sound took place, rattling the bridge. It was beginning to shake. Cars around were speeding past the truck, but Beca had nowhere to go.

A third explosion shot blue sparks in the air. The blast knocked Beca twenty feet back, throwing her sky high in the process. She was out cold as giant cracks started to form in the foundation of the bridge.

The brunette's body landed near the toll booth she had gone through minutes earlier. The remaining cars on the bridge were frantically reversing to evacuate. Some people ditched their cars and were running to safety. The cracks in the foundation were getting bigger and spreading to other parts of the bridge, including the road itself.

When Beca finally started to regain consciousness, she opened her eyes to see the bridge crumbling to pieces. She was hidden in a pile of rubble, so everyone rushing to get off the bridge didn't see her. The brunette felt the ground underneath her start to shift. She tried to get up, but she was too weak to crawl out from the pile. She was trapped.

All of a sudden, the road gave way and sent Beca plummeting towards the bay. She hit the water with such force that she didn't even feel anything at first.

Then, everything was black.

I hope you all are excited for this story. It's one I've been wanting to write for a long time!
