Kozilek: The Golden Avatar

Chapter 1: I'm a what now?

The silence was all I was aware of when I regained consciousness. As my other senses returned to me, questions arose in my head.

What?...Where am I?...Who am I? All knowledge of myself and my situation seemed to have escaped me. After a few brief moments of struggle, my eyes slowly fluttered open. I was alone, naked and floating in a vast and empty void. I had no recollection of who I was, yet I knew that I used to know. I knew that I had a past, that I had existed before, but I just couldn't remember. It was as if all of my memories had been put in a locked down portion of my brain. Still there, but inaccessible. Don't ask me how that works because I'm not totally sure. I closed my eyes to try and pull some of those memories forward, to try and remember…

"Don't try too hard now, you might hurt yourself," a beautiful female voice said, ripping me out of my concentrated state.

"What? Who's there? Do you know where I am? Or who I am?" I questioned, hoping to get some answers of my current situation.

The voice chuckled lightly. "Yes child, I know who you are. I am the one who brought you here. And as for where "here" is, well, we're in your head."

"We're in my head?" I asked. How could all of this be in my head? Is it a dream? Is this even real?

"Oh it most certainly is real."

'Did she just read my mind?' I thought, confused on the whole situation.

The voice chuckled softly again, "Yes I did just read your mind. Your thoughts are very loud and not very protected, but that's an issue for another day."

"Um… okay? That still doesn't answer my question of who I am or why you brought me here," I asked, deciding to ignore the whole "protecting my loud thoughts" part of it's response.

"Well you see, I need your help. My world and very existence is being threatened, and you're the only one who can help."

"Why me? What makes me so special? I can't even remember who I am!" I yelled.

"You're special because you are different. You are not from my world, but from a world that is vastly different from mine. In that world, in your world, you were nobody, but here in mine, you shall be the savior of us all."

"Ok hold up. Firstly, don't call me a nobody, that's a little insulting. Especially coming from someone who is just a voice. You're like the definition of a nobody. Secondly, what is this world you are talking about? If I'm not from here, how can I be the "savior of us all", if that's even a real thing?" I said sarcastically, air quoting to myself.

"Well what I meant by a nobody is that you were not of any significance."

"Oh yeah much better," I mumbled to myself.

"You didn't have any power. You were an average mortal. But here, you'll be more than a mere mortal. Here, you shall be an Avatar!" The voice proclaimed, getting louder and gaining gravitas as it reached the end of it's sentence, as if it just revealed a huge surprise. I was not moved.

"Ok wait. Hold up, time out. Reverse it back. An Avatar? What the fuck is that?" I asked confused, but as the words left my mind I knew that the answers were already inside my head, as a dull ache started to creep around my head. "An Avatar? Do I know what that means? How the hell do I know what that means, and yet have no clue?!"

"I think Raava, that it is time to reveal ourselves to our champion." A deep voice thundered, but this time the voice wasn't in my head, but vibrating in the void around me.

"Who the fuck are you now?!" I yelled, fed up with this nonsense.

As if to answer my question, two forms shimmered into existence in front of me. The first was a massive creature, resembling a turtle. Except that this turtle had the head of a man/lion hybrid and was the size of a FREAKING ISLAND! Oh, did I forget to mention that he had an entire forest on the top of his shell? And that his teeth were several times my height? No? Well they were. The giant island turtle.. Lion… man… thing emitted an aura so strong and potent that it made my senses flare and my head to swim.

The second form was much smaller, only being a couple times my height. This figure was bright, as it physically glowed with a powerful white light that hurt my eyes. Shaped like a kite, this entity resembled more of a glow-in-the dark streamer, far less physically impressive than an island sized turtle thingy. However, where it lacked in physical presence, the aura it emitted made up for lighter and more peaceful feeling then the turtle, it was nonetheless very powerful, surpassing that of the turtles.

I floated there unresponsive in the void for a few brief moments, regaining my senses after being unceremoniously blasted and overloaded by their energetic auras. When I regain my control, I like to say that I handled my surprise rather calmly…

"AAAAHHHH! WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU?! DEMONS!"

… I didn't…

A thunderous voice broke me out of my terrified rant, "I am a lion turtle, the last of my kind." I think it's pretty obvious who said that one. (The island-turtle-man-lion-thing for those of you who didn't catch on).

"And I am Raava, the spirit of light and peace," said the glowing party streamer.

I shook my head and rubbed my forehead, my headache returning from the overload of information. "Ooooooook, so what does a giant lion turtle and a spirit have to do with me?" I asked, still completely confused.

"We have chosen you, of previous nobody, to be our champion. Although I must admit you are smaller than I had imagined, but no worries, we shall help you with that one." Said the lion turtle with amusement, gesturing at me with one of his house sized hands.

"Again with the nobody thing?! Getting a little old. And what do you mean by smaller than you..." I trailed off as I looked downwards, before blushing profusely and covering my exposed self. "Not cool man, not cool. And that still doesn't answer my question."

Raava (the party streamer) chuckled lightly, her form shimmering like starlight as she did so. "A little slow too but that's alright. Basically, we need you to help the avatar of this world win a war. He is young and untrained and we are afraid he will lose if he doesn't get some serious backup. If he dies, or loses the war, this world and our universe would descend into darkness and chaos."

"Under normal circumstances, the Avatar would be enough to solve this conflict on his own, no matter how inexperienced, but we fear that there might be some other forces at play here. Forces that wish to tip the world out of it's delicate balance. That is where you come in. Do you follow?"

"Uuuuuuuh yes?" I said, although it came out as more of a question. "But how exactly am I going to help if I'm such of, as you would say, a 'nobody'?" I asked, adding in the quotation marks with one hand, as to keep myself covered.

"We'll give you powers similar to those that you wished you had as a child back in your world. You'll be able to learn any skill or any knowledge simply by absorbing through your senses." Said the lion turtle.

"So in this world, you'll be able to observe other people and learn their skills, including their bending." Raava announced.

I had to stop them again, "Hold up, bending? What's that?" I was starting to get really fed up with all this.

"I believe it is time for you to regain your memories." Declared the lion turtle. With that, the turtle raised one of his mighty hands, and rested the tip of a claw on my forehead. A sharp pain struck me in the head, but it was gone as fast as it came. Suddenly, millions of memories came flooding back to me.

I knew about this world. It was from a TV show that I used to love called Avatar: The Last Airbender. Apparently it was more real than I thought. I knew who Raava was, and the lion turtle, and the avatar, Aang, that they were talking about. But that's not all I remembered. I remembered who I was, my family, my job, my life, my death. I was shocked and speechless, but also excited.

"No. Way. This is real?! You're real! Oh my fuck! I thought it was all just a show! This is awesome! I get to be an Avatar? Can I really control all the elements? Can I go into the Avatar state? Can I ... wait…..I ...died?" I asked, as my final memories of my past self caught up to me.

"Yes you did. We decided to give you a second chance at life, a chance in an alternate reality where you can make a difference and help thousands of innocent people." Said the lion turtle, gently.

"And to answer your questions, yes you're an "Avatar", yes you can bend all the elements, but you cannot go into the avatar state, as that is something only THE Avatar can do. You're kinda like a copy of the real one." Raava explained to me.

"Sweet sweet, makes sense. So how does this work? Where do I start? How do I start?" I waved my arms around wildly, trying to recreate the complex martial art inspired moves I remember from the TV show. My "bending" proved to be unsuccessful.

"You will not be able to bend right now. As of now you have no knowledge of bending outside your memories. In order to learn, you must observe it real time. The more you observe, the more you will be able to reproduce." Raava explained. "And before we send you on your way, you must decide who you are going to be in your new life. Perhaps a name is a good place to start?"

"I don't have a name? My name was Ryan. What is it now? Can I pick?" I asked. Indeed, my name in my previous life was Ryan, but I wasn't so sure that I would want that for my second life, especially in a world like that of the avatar.

"Your name is whatever you choose it to be." said the lion turtle.

"Anything? Hmmmmmm," I thought for a second before grinning as a name came to mind. "Oh I got one! I shall be… wait for it… Kozilek!" I struck the superhero pose, with my fists on my hips and chest puffed out, as if that made me anymore imposing in front of these two all powerful spirit/beings.

"Hmmm, Kozilek eh? That's a powerful name. Very suitable for a powerful being such as yourself." Raava said proudly.

"Why thank you Raava. It's from a trading card game I used to play during study hall in school." Maybe I shouldn't have said that, it was more cool in my head, even if only slightly. "So now that I have my name, am I ready to go? Oh also, perhaps minor details but, when and where exactly am I going?"

"When you are ready, we will send you down at a location that will put you within the route of Aang and his friends." Explained the lion turtle.

"As for when, Aang and his friends have just passed through Omashu, and are on their way to the northern water tribe. Zuko and the fire nation are still searching for the avatar. Any more questions?" concluded Raava.

"Uh yes just one more. What if I need more help? Or have more questions? Is there any way I can contact you?"

"We are always here if you need us," Raava replied, extending a tendril to lightly touch my forehead. "Through meditation, we will be able to speak again.

" Meditation huh? Hm ok. I think I'm ready." I was. Although the thought about being a video game character in a TV show WAS weird, it was also awesome at the same time. And, if my memories of my past life were correct, I was dead. What did I have to lose?

"Alright then, in that case close your eyes and prepare yourself." I closed my eyes. A bright light began to shine on the other side of my eyelids. A deep drumming sounded so powerful, I could feel the vibrations through my whole body. "We will begin to send you down to our world. Remember, you are the Golden Avatar, you can learn and fight however and whatever you want." Raava spoke loudly as the light and drumming intensified.

"The enemies you'll face are much stronger than they were when you knew them as characters in your show. Do not underestimate them. And try not to die, we can't bring you back to life a second time.." the lion turtle added, the vibrations of his voice matching the vibrations of the thundering drums.

"Goodluck Kozilek. Keep Aang safe, win the war, become a hero. We'll try to keep in touch." The light grew so bright that my eyes hurt. My ears ached from the drumming, and my body vibrated from the vibrations surrounding me. It almost became unbearable, until it all stopped, and I knew no more.
